Why is Iran building giant mock-up of U.S. aircraft carrier?

By Laura Koran

Amid ongoing high-level diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran, it's a symbol of underlying mistrust.

Commercial satellite images obtained by CNN reveal that Iran is constructing a large-scale replica of a U.S. military aircraft carrier, complete with fake U.S-style airplanes, near the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.

The mock supercarrier seems to have been modeled off of an American Nimitz-class (CVN 68) carrier, down to the number "68" painted on the flight deck, though its intended use remains a mystery.

According to one U.S. official, the mock-up is more akin to a Hollywood set than an actual warship.

The U.S. government does not believe the carrier is functional, or that Iran is even capable of building an aircraft carrier.

The same official told CNN's Barbara Starr that while the purpose of the fake carrier is unknown, Iran may be planning to destroy it in a propaganda move. The Iranian government has blown up target barges in the past and aired the footage on its state-run media.

"If this is all for strategic effect," noted the official, "then with all eyes on the construction that seems to fizzle."

Nimitz-class carriers are the centerpiece of U.S. naval forces, and the largest warships in the world. Few countries have nuclear-powered carriers in their fleets.

The revelation that Iran is constructing this mock carrier comes at a potentially pivotal moment in U.S.-Iranian relations.

Back in November, negotiations between Iran and a coalition of countries that includes the United States brought about an interim agreement over Iran's nuclear program. Iran agreed to roll back parts of the program in exchange for an end to certain economic sanctions.

Negotiations on a larger deal are ongoing.

On Thursday, in a message to the Iranian people to commemorate the Persian new year, President Barack Obama said he is "committed to diplomacy" with their country.

But amid the softened rhetoric, there is lingering mistrust in both countries.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the American Jewish Congress in New York on Wednesday that she is "personally skeptical that the Iranians would follow through and deliver" on the November deal.

And in January, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told CNN's Jim Sciutto that the Obama administration has been mischaracterizing the terms of the agreement.

For now, the outcome of these diplomatic efforts and the fate of the fake aircraft carrier remain uncertain.

good time everyone.that career is part of a film about iranian airbus flight655.Iran Air Flight 655 was an Iran Air civilian passenger flight from Tehran to Dubai that was shot down by the United States Navy guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes on 3 July 1988. The attack took place in Iranian airspace, over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf, and on the flight's usual flight path. The aircraft, an Airbus A300 B2-203, was destroyed by SM-2MR surface-to-air missiles fired from the Vincennes.

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

CNN does not even have to balls and decency to admit when it has turned in a propaganda machine.
The fact as it has been reported and confirmed by a movie production company in Iran that they are making a movie of Iranian airliner that was shot down by the US, and this is a prop for the movie....
So now you know, but hey feel free to believe all that you read in the media as it has not much of a factual value.

The Iranian warship aircraft carrier is only about two-thirds the length of a typical 1,100-foot-long aircraft carrier. it is state of the art and will be equipped with the most advanced technologies. it is not a mockup due to its size and number 68 is not a trade mark number and can be used by any person.this will be the first one many Iranian aircraft carries that soon will join the Iranian naval forces.

I think the explanation is much less sinister that seems to be and it might have to do with a movie that is being made about the downing of the civilian plane Iran Air flight 655, but that was shot down by a missile from Vincennes but not by Nimitz?! The mock up is supposedly being made as a set in the movie.

    • shloime

cgi and/or models are a lot cheaper if you're just shooting a movie, and this "mock-up" doesn't even look right, with the rounded-off corners of the flight deck. you can buy more convincing scale models in a toy store.

what you can't do with a model is plan and practice for an attack on a real carrier. and iran has threatened to attack the american fleet in the gulf.

Iran's first domestically built destroyer was launched in 2010 and people think they can build a carrier...unlikely. Even China buys old Soviet carriers vs attempting to build their own. Here's the actual google map grid: 27.055305, 55.972643. This dry dock is quite a distance from the water but it is on a ship launch. The frame for the carrier is like the object in the goggle image (ie it is the same length) so it is most likely a mock up and not a real carrier.

C'mon everyone. This is CLEARLY a message from Iran to the US: "We're building a mockup of one of your carriers so we can test a new weapon against it."

    1) They don't care if our satellites see it at all. If it was anything secret it wouldn't be out in the open in dry dock.
    2) This has absolutely nothing to do with building a nuclear reactor or nuclear anything. Get a grip.
    3) They clearly paid much more attention to unimportant details like the paint job and markings on the deck than getting the actual SHAPE of the flight deck correct (it's way off)

Given these facts, this mockup is either a full sized target or a movie set.

so iran makes a better drone than america did (the ambassador of death) and tested some new long rang radar evading missiles they made and still the U.S cant believe that they can make a carrier . carriers have been made long before microprocessors and some how it would be inconceivable that they can make one . its a big boat with a air strip on it . 10/1 if they can build the hull the damn thing works

this is why america is losing . it underestimates every one else . how was that bay of pigs (the only real fighting in the cold war) and korean war and vietnam . is the war on terror over the cia has said repeatedly that the terrorist only number a few hundred and they blow them selves up and you detain thousands so its over right no more terrorism globally because you stomped it out in iraq and afganistan right ... oh you didnt . you couldnt handle some rag tag team of terrorist that doesnt even have central leadership ?!?!?!?! well at least the united states can defend its own in libya right...

Yeah, an aircraft carrier is just a "boat with a runway". LOL. Dumbest thing I have seen posted on CNN today. An aircraft carrier doesn't have an extremely sophisticated catapult system, highly sophisticated radar guidance systems, arresting gear for jets to land, an onboard power plant, etc, etc, etc...

You are right about one thing, Iran is capable of building "a boat with a landing strip on it" it is just too bad that no jets will ever be able to launch or recover off of it and it will be good for absolutely nothing than collecting rust.

The ship which is a mock-up of a U.S aircraft carrier is part of a movie project called "Airbus" which narrates the story of Iran Air Flight 655, which was shot down by U.S navy in the Persian gulf with 290 civilians on board including 66 children, in an effort to put pressure on Iran to sign a cease fire with Saddam Hossein (Then a US ally) who had initially invaded Iran but was losing the war.

You're right. Its for a blockbuster Iranian movie about the Airbus shootdown. Reagan added insult to injury when he not only refused to apologize, he only offered enough money to pay for the Airplane, but no money to the families of the dead passengers. He even gave the USS Vincennes commander a promotion.

The Vincennes – helo was fired upon in international waters by an Iranian gun ship. The u.s. pursued the gun ship into Iranian waters. Iran initiated the attack. Reagan paid over $216,000 per victim. It was a tragedy but Iran is to blame for initiating it.

Majority of Iranians love Americans and I am sure most of Americans like us too but underestimating other countries is much more offensive than spelling incorrectly!

I also have to say that knowing english is irrelevant of your educational level! I'm Astrophysics PHD student and I might spell "quiet" wrongly, what about you? do you mind if I ask you what is you educational level? Also other than my first language, Persian, I can speak English, Arabic and Spanish. what about you? do you know any language other than English?

I'm not sure about educational level of other middle eastern countries (i.e. Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan etc...) but underestimating other countries is so offensive! Please think about it!

Unless the mockup has all the structural capabilities of the original, blowing it up does nothing. Real ship has many water tight compartments, emergency pumps, the ship is designed to take hits and not sink. And let's not forget when the Cole was hit with the suicide bomber, even with the large hole in the side, the ships crew, well trained in disaster management, saved the ship. Same for the carrier, ships crew well trained to work on damaged areas.

Actually that is not true. Very few nations can construct an Aircraft carrier like the United States can. All of those nations that can are United States allies. Even Russia is only able to construct what amounts to an Aircraft carrier designed to carry helicopters and that was commissioned in 1991. They sold an aircraft carrier to the Chinese and are attempting to modify it to carry jet airplanes that can launch and land on the aircraft carrier deck, but it is actually still being tested.

The United States has been operating carriers since the twenties. The Brits did it first but the experience and the ships the US built during WWII made the US Navy the most experienced and successful operators of carriers in the world.

The carrier battle group has been the premier power projection platform ever since WWII. The US Navy has been operating carriers in Cold and Hot war situations and no enemy has come close to getting even a piece of one. The last carrier lost was the Bismark Sea during the invasion of iwo Jima in 1945.

The difficulty in operating carriers is primarily the expense. Very few nations have the ability and heavy industry to build the ships, power plants and air groups.

      March 23, 2014 at 1:10 am | Reply
      • jimranes

The cost of a new Nimitz class carrier is close to $14 billion and the annual operating cost of the carrier is $2.6 billion a year. But that's only part of the cost. A current US carrier group consists of Aegis class cruiser (1), Aegis class destroyer (1 or 2), one or two LA class fast attack submarines, & fast supply ships. The costs of training and maintaining a single carrier group would bankrupt most small countries and some large ones. Freedom isn't free, but IMHO we as a country spend too much money on our military which is estimated at more than the next twenty nations combined! I think we can restructure our military to fight and win wars of the future at less than we are spending today. The US is already building ships to fight unconventional wars with fast littoral capable vessels which can carry special ops and support aircraft. We already have the finest special ops trained military in the world.

No Mike, you are just silly. It is not a matter of being smart, or having enough ambition and know-how. It is about the massive amount of resources, money, and tech. There is a reason there are only a few countries with them. Because they are very hard to build without bankrupting your country. If they were easy, there would be dozens of countries with them.

If it looks like the set of a movie then it probably is the set of a movie - if you think about it in Iran-movie-land the bad guys are likely to be us just as we use a plethora of generic Arabs, Iranians and other shady types as bad guys in our movies.

As for the Iran and bomb thing (Chuck) building a weapon isn't that easy - plutonium is nasty stuff to work with, its extremely poisonous (and radioactive, of course) and it catches fire in contact with the air. So you have to figure out how to machine it (not easy) and then you gold plate it to stop it catching fire. It degrades in storage so you have to continually rebuild your weapons.

Actually getting the stuff to explode properly isn't easy either. You have to compress it into a critical mass and at that exact time you spray it with some neutrons from a trigger device to start the reaction going.

There is a reason why WW2's Manhattan Project used a sizable chunk of the US's GDP.

plutonium is only pyrophoric when finely divided. it does corrode easily in air however.

The 'Captain America: Winter Soldier' film is coming out soon. If they wanted to threaten Hollywood's special effects prowess, why did they not build a full scale 'heli-carrier' set instead?

Producing Mustard Gas for War is a 1917 technology.
Producing Atomic Bombs for War is a 1945 technology.
Product Nuclear Powered Supercarriers for War is a 1975 technology.

Yes, the third one is harder to acquire or build.

The leaders of Iran are not stupid. They have learned the hard lessons demonstrated by the other two members of George Bush's moronic Axis of Evil.
    – Where is Saddam Hussein Today without Nuclear Weapons?
    – Where is Kim Jong Un Today with Nuclear Weapons?

All the Iranian people have to do is turn on the TV and watch what is happening to Ukraine.
To drive home the point of why they think Nuclear Weapons will make them safer.

you sure they do? You seen the classified reports? The US acts as if they do and the Koreans agree but nobody has seen them nor has there been ANY real proof except for some test underground that the Russians said produced no detectale radioactivity.
But then Shrub Jr and Condy and Dick were 100% sure Saddam had "weapons of mass distraction" too. Same as how USA is oh so sure Iran is "building the bomb". Seems Reality is NOT on USA side. SO far USA is battling 0 and hasnt produced ANY real evidence. How long should I wait for the fabled Iraqi weapons to turn up? Oh I forgot, they were moved to Syria.

All these people are idiots. Instead of spending their time and money on coming up with ways to improve their countries, improve their education and economy, they spend all their time figuring out how to blow up the West. Get a life people, you will never win, a freedom loving democracy will always win.

a freedom loving democracy? look up operation ajax. deposing a secular, democratically elected leader and installing a military dictator with a notorious secret police that liked to 'vanish' people doesn't sound like what a 'freedom loving democracy' does. maybe thats why they continue to spend money on military projects, especially when BOTH their neighbor to the east AND to the west were both invaded and occupied b the same 'freedom loving democracy'.

Two physicists got together to see how easy it was to build a nuclear weapon. They were able to do so with only the tools and materials (aside from the plutonium and other explosive elements) that you would find in your garden variety workshop.

The only difficult thing about nuclear weapons is the nuclear material (which is what Iran is currently working on).

Building a nuclear weapon is far easier than building a super carrier.

It's the difference between building an AK-47 and building a space station.

      • bob

as a physicist I can categorically deny the claim that you can build a nuclear bomb in a backyard shed with common tools, unless your tools are either million dollar CNC turning centers OR your idea of a nuclear bomb is 2 hunks of metal that get hot, then catch fire, maybe break up, and make a loud bang not much louder than a consumer firework.

saying that it is easy to build a nuclear weapon 'all you need is the uranium or plutonium' is like saying 'i could have been a doctor, it was just that science stuff that I couldn't understand'.

as far as iran trying to make special nuclear material, they dont have to make it. they were given enough weapons grade uranium for a bomb in the form of 2 cores for the tehran research reactor, by the united states, as part of the atoms for peace initiative. this was back in the late 60's. by the jibber jabber in your post this would mean they should have had the bomb several decades ago.

Bob, have you tried? You have no idea what can be done.

        March 22, 2014 at 10:54 pm |
      • bob

mike, i most certainly do know what can and cant be done. while MUCH of simple weapons design is well established engineering, it's still not the stuff you can easily do, unless you have access to tremendous resources OR you want to make a laughably inefficient device with low yield.

        March 22, 2014 at 11:38 pm |
      • Bax!

Chuck your challenge tells me that it's possible to strike a
bic-lighter beneath a pile of U-238 and form isotopes of
critical mass. Did your garden variety physicists know that
        in E=mc2... C = light velocity?

        March 23, 2014 at 1:05 am |
      • EzE

Yes, it must be super easy as we only had to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to figure it out back in the '40's. Geez, we could have just done it in our back yard.

        March 24, 2014 at 5:02 pm |
      • skyhawk637

The mechanics of a nuclear fission device itself are pretty straight forward. In the simplest of terms, you basically need to be able to slam a small block into a larger block at a high velocity during free fall. The fissile material is the hard part. It has to be finely tuned to achieve the desired affect. That's where those millions of dollars went.

        March 24, 2014 at 5:14 pm |
    • nathanbrazil

One really has NOTHING to do with the other. Being able to build either one in no way makes building the other one easier.

They didn't build it for bombing practice; bombing a sitting duck is not like attacking a fighting ship shooting back at you.

It can't be for a movie; why spend the money buiding the thing rather than use stock footage or a few thousand dollars on CGI.

It must be for a propaganda demonstration of some sort, or they've just gone crazier.
