Why is Iran building giant mock-up of U.S. aircraft carrier?

Amid ongoing high-level diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran, it's a symbol of underlying mistrust.
Commercial satellite images obtained by CNN reveal that Iran is constructing a large-scale replica of a U.S. military aircraft carrier, complete with fake U.S-style airplanes, near the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.
The mock supercarrier seems to have been modeled off of an American Nimitz-class (CVN 68) carrier, down to the number "68" painted on the flight deck, though its intended use remains a mystery.
According to one U.S. official, the mock-up is more akin to a Hollywood set than an actual warship.
The U.S. government does not believe the carrier is functional, or that Iran is even capable of building an aircraft carrier.
The same official told CNN's Barbara Starr that while the purpose of the fake carrier is unknown, Iran may be planning to destroy it in a propaganda move. The Iranian government has blown up target barges in the past and aired the footage on its state-run media.
"If this is all for strategic effect," noted the official, "then with all eyes on the construction that seems to fizzle."
Nimitz-class carriers are the centerpiece of U.S. naval forces, and the largest warships in the world. Few countries have nuclear-powered carriers in their fleets.
The revelation that Iran is constructing this mock carrier comes at a potentially pivotal moment in U.S.-Iranian relations.
Back in November, negotiations between Iran and a coalition of countries that includes the United States brought about an interim agreement over Iran's nuclear program. Iran agreed to roll back parts of the program in exchange for an end to certain economic sanctions.
Negotiations on a larger deal are ongoing.
On Thursday, in a message to the Iranian people to commemorate the Persian new year, President Barack Obama said he is "committed to diplomacy" with their country.
But amid the softened rhetoric, there is lingering mistrust in both countries.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the American Jewish Congress in New York on Wednesday that she is "personally skeptical that the Iranians would follow through and deliver" on the November deal.
And in January, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told CNN's Jim Sciutto that the Obama administration has been mischaracterizing the terms of the agreement.
For now, the outcome of these diplomatic efforts and the fate of the fake aircraft carrier remain uncertain.

It's obvious! They're going to use it to attack another country and place the blame on us to try to start a war. Assuming it's not actually being built by the US to attack our own soil and place the blame on Iran to give us an excuse to attack them, for which is what the republicans are secretly hoping.
That would be a great theory, if this were the 1800's. Satellites, radar, surveillance flights and a host of other ways to observe the movements of the ship won't fool anyone except the Iranian people. Each ship in each fleet has a unique heat, radar, and sonar signature. A mock up of a US carrier wouldn't appear at all as a real one to electronic surveillance, and you can bet, the moment that ship gets underway, if it can actually move on its own power, it will be shadowed by a number of nations.

The most obvious reason Iranians are building it is for some form of attack training, most likely for some version of asymmetric warfare. A possible alternative reason may be just as a mind fu c k, tomake us worry they have some kind of plan and/or capability.

Because this was probably found by the public first as the first release images were old. If satellite images of the ocean went public hundreds of thousands of people would look instead of a hundred.
Because with the ship they know where to look.. at populated areas with known constructions sites or shipyards. Those are things they photograph regularly. With the lost plane, good luck picking the right 300 yard x 300 yard area to photograph out of the 10's of millions of such areas the plane could be in.

Why can we get a detailed satellite photo of this project, but cannot take such photos over the Indian Ocean where flight 370 supposedly disappeared? Everyone relies on Chinese satellite photos which show no detail.

Folks, the mock-up of an American aircraft carrier will be used to train Iranian storm troopers who will board an American craft and fight man-to-man for possession. Look, no country is going to go toe-to-toe to defeat a nuclear aircraft carrier with another ship, but wave after wave of suicide troopers might be able to take over. Once in possession, the Iranians would steal nuclear warheads, then scuttle the ship with explosions. It would be an event that would be talked about by Muslims for thousands of years. The mock-up is the way to train for such an event.
Carriers don't travel alone, they travel in carrier groups made up of destroyers, frigates, subs, etc. Any suicide boats that approaches a carrier group could potentially be under sustained targeted fire for days if not weeks.
Nuclear aircraft carriers have nuclear propulsion. They do *NOT* have nuclear warheads. There aren't any there to be stolen. Besides,even if a few suicide bombers neared the group, plenty of forces would blow them from the water before they reached the carrier. The group travels as a GROUP, not as an individual carrier alone at sea.
I'm sorry to inform you that you are incorrect. I spent two years on the Nimitz herself, and although I cannot elaborate further your statement is inaccurate. As far as actually making it to the physical ship should you make it past the escort ships (which you will not) the carrier has its own self defense force of US Marines for this very purpose and of course......you will not make it. This is not a mock up of a Nimitz class carrier. The bow is much to narrow and looks like a jump jet carrier with an angle deck. Whose to say that it is not an actual functional large deck carrier. Would hope it's not but it could be.

I spent several years with the US Army battling mock Russian forces. It is standard procedure to make training exercises as realistic as possible. This training scenario means we are considered number one on their threat list. Any implication of provocation is the media trying to promote hysteria and paranoia, as usual.

The carrier is a fake.
While the cranes, buildings, and the "ship" itself are creating shadows, the "jets" on the flight deck are not. They appear to be just painted on. Also, the superstructure casts no shadows.
The lower right section of the flight deck is missing and has the jagged appearance of missing plywood sheets. Finally, if it were actually under construction, painting the flight deck is the last thing that's done, not during construction.
It's probably a plywood mockup to be destroyed while being filmed. Iran is just trying to impress its less-than-evolved neighbors.
Could be that Iran is training a specialist team to take over an American Aircraft Carrier. Using the model to run drills and develop a workable plan.

United States sold them the plans long ago for a deal today. This way they do not have to build a nuclear bomb and still be able to defend themselves. Folks – for everyone wondering why the military hasn't photographed it – they probably have in much greater detail than a commercial photo satellite does. But they don't want to compromise that ability or the orbit of the satellites – so we get a military official who, probably after a few drinks, says the Iranians are building a big old movie prop, and CNN eats it up with a commercial photo. Interesting to be sure – and either for use as a movie prop or as a training device – but not much more.....

The dry dock is at lat 27.05 lon 55.97, surround buildings matches exactly with the recent carrier mock up photo.
The mock up is not there in the 8/16/2013 satellite picture, just tubular frame with no keel. I doubt if the mock up flight deck is sturdy enough to support a practice landing. Note that flight deck has a missing corner at the lower right of the photo.
We must question why this "carrier" pic was utilized in this article. It's clearly worthless for "training" purposes as it's 1/2 scale of the real deal. Hitting it with any type of ordinance would not be the same as hitting the real carrier. The results would be as worthless as this mock carrier. This can only be considered a prop – a movie prop, at best.
Close but actual location of the dry dock is at Lat 27.147, Lon 56.211, look for the details of the exterior sections of the wharf, particularly the 90 degree corner located 65 feet west of the SW corner of the dry dock. Interesting to note that from the Google Earth satellite photo taken on Jan. 21, 2014, there appears that there has been a lot of infrastructure/support equipment installed plus the building of the half scale ship, all in a period of 90 days. Now, possibly the Google Earth image has an error on its noted image date – OR – the originator of the article probably would like to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge as well (at least we know it exists). Also, still haven't figured out why the shadow at the bow of the ship is being cast at exactly 0 degrees from the centerline of the ship while the shadows from three of the four boom cranes are at approx 15-20 degrees to the left (funny that right and center cranes show a common shadow while the on of the left is different and the forth crane with its boom lowered seems to being showing a shadow just as tall as the other three yet its boom is in the lowered position).

This is a doctored photo. These are the Google Earth coordinates. 27.054893,55.972783 That "carrier is one half scale of a Nimitz class carrier. This is a bogus article. For all we know, that carrier was used for filming a movie. It cannot be used for any useful training.

It's not a real carrier, unless you believe they built those "aircraft" already sitting on it's deck from scratch, right on top of the ship.

Aircraft carries are much more that a boat with a flat top – catapult, recovery system, aircraft & munitions elevators, carrier capable aircraft, and the dozen support ships. There is a reason very few countries have them and most only have one far inferior to the US's ten nuclear powered carriers and their task forces. Just ONE US task force is more powerful that nearly all other Navy's.
NOTE: US also have the the two largest air forces, #1USAF and #2Navy

It's not very realistic to train against a lone carrier, considering carriers are NEVER alone. If you somehow get up close to a carrier then the rest of the ships/subs encircling it were destroyed somehow.

Judging by the way our engineers gain knowledge, and how our army performs its researches. I would say they are trying to reverse engineers the parts they can from US Aircraft carrier and figure out the rest as they go ahead with the construction.
You guys need to remember that our economy might have gotten great hits with the combined forces of the sanctions and the removal of government subsides but the more we were threatened through out these past few years, the more our army budget has gone up.
We definitely don't have the insane amount of budget that US has, but on the other hand we are not creating new technologies. So, we have to work out with what we can because our government senses that the threat is real so they act accordingly.
Even our missile program is such an attempt in my point of view. We haven't had the great advancement in fighter jets to attack targets beyond our borders in case we were attacked. so they have came up with a technology they could have succeed.
To reverse engineer something you must have possession of the item. I'm pretty sure we know where our 10 carriers are at. Also, building a carrier isn't as simple as mocking up a plywood model. You'll need aircraft capable of landing on a ship. Also, if you're going to copy something you might want to start with something smaller that the most COMPLICATED military craft EVER. Just the nuclear power plant used to power the US fleet is FAR beyond what any other nation is capable of. Lastly, carriers are not effective without support ships. A LOT of support ships and subs. Carriers are some of the most protected areas on Earth even at war.
May be to anchor at the Hormuz straight . If attached it'll sink and block the straight and the ship channel.
The straight of Hormoz is 39km in its narrowest part.
So i doubt that even a 333m length of a carrier can block it.
but a good look at Iran's strategic location and tactical advantage of nearby Islands would tell you that Iran does not need to block the straight with obstacles to do that.
Although i highly doubt that any Iranian official would think to do such a thing unless they are taunting US in press.
