Why is Iran building giant mock-up of U.S. aircraft carrier?

By Laura Koran

Amid ongoing high-level diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran, it's a symbol of underlying mistrust.

Commercial satellite images obtained by CNN reveal that Iran is constructing a large-scale replica of a U.S. military aircraft carrier, complete with fake U.S-style airplanes, near the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.

The mock supercarrier seems to have been modeled off of an American Nimitz-class (CVN 68) carrier, down to the number "68" painted on the flight deck, though its intended use remains a mystery.

According to one U.S. official, the mock-up is more akin to a Hollywood set than an actual warship.

The U.S. government does not believe the carrier is functional, or that Iran is even capable of building an aircraft carrier.

The same official told CNN's Barbara Starr that while the purpose of the fake carrier is unknown, Iran may be planning to destroy it in a propaganda move. The Iranian government has blown up target barges in the past and aired the footage on its state-run media.

"If this is all for strategic effect," noted the official, "then with all eyes on the construction that seems to fizzle."

Nimitz-class carriers are the centerpiece of U.S. naval forces, and the largest warships in the world. Few countries have nuclear-powered carriers in their fleets.

The revelation that Iran is constructing this mock carrier comes at a potentially pivotal moment in U.S.-Iranian relations.

Back in November, negotiations between Iran and a coalition of countries that includes the United States brought about an interim agreement over Iran's nuclear program. Iran agreed to roll back parts of the program in exchange for an end to certain economic sanctions.

Negotiations on a larger deal are ongoing.

On Thursday, in a message to the Iranian people to commemorate the Persian new year, President Barack Obama said he is "committed to diplomacy" with their country.

But amid the softened rhetoric, there is lingering mistrust in both countries.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the American Jewish Congress in New York on Wednesday that she is "personally skeptical that the Iranians would follow through and deliver" on the November deal.

And in January, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told CNN's Jim Sciutto that the Obama administration has been mischaracterizing the terms of the agreement.

For now, the outcome of these diplomatic efforts and the fate of the fake aircraft carrier remain uncertain.

They're obviously building a training facility for special forces to practice boarding and taking over ships. The fact that this is NEVER going to happen is irrelevant. Our military trains for situations where it will have to invade cities (just like ours), are you upset about that? ... It's like any fight, people can talk smack all they want right up until the first punch is thrown.

Iran should have done this long time before to protect itself from Israel and the Arabs. CNN (Israeli TV) always want to start a war against Iran. And this article is another example. Do we know how many times, Israel has attacked Iraq, Libya and now Syria without any permission from anyone in the (so called) name of its security. what kind of security it wants with more than 200 N. arms in its stock.

What? Don't know if you have an idea how government works but the President is in charge of the Military. I am neither right nor left. But he is the one who calls the shots. Second, Iran couldn't build a ship that would be any threat to the US even if they wanted! Anything they did build would get sunk if even tried to attack a US Navy ship.

He wants to make nice while our enemies use the time given to them to develop weapons and make a strike. Even if it is a mock up or not, they are up to something and it is not going to help their economy or their people or international relations.

Do you know how expensive it is to build an aircraft carrier? And not just the vessel itself, but the facilities to build it and install material and equipment into the hull? It takes Newport News 4 years to build one and 2 more before delivery getting all the systems up and running. This is just a prop to make psychos like you froth at the mouth.

"Truth" Iran does not build their own airplanes, in fact they still fly a bunch of F-14 and F-15 we sold them when the Sha was in power, they mostly buy from Russia now. They definitely don't build aircraft carriers. They don't have the technical know how or the infrastructure to support an aircraft carrier even if they did.

The "mock up," if you look at it closely, is not an accurate "copy" of a Nimitz-class carrier. The flight deck, for one, is not cantered on the port side to the degree that an actual Nimitz-class carrier would be. It looks more like it came out of someone's vivid imagination than an actual carrier. All the lines are rounded, not geometric like a real Nimitz vessel would be. To me, its more humorous than anything.

That's what I'm thinking. And even that isn't a great reason. But it's got nothing to do with training to steal or sink one. That's silly. You don't waste resources on a full scale mock up for that. If you want to test a missile penetration capability, you simply take some old ship that's been mothballed and add armor to the desired thickness. It doesn't have to "look" the same. If you want to practice for special forces, you build a mock up of the INTERIOR in some facility on a base. Frankly, since they know we'll see it, they're probably just messing with us. Who knew the Iranians had that good of a sense of humor? They're just messing with our conspiracy nut's heads! hahaha!

And if they built a giant wooden bunny as a military weapon, that might not work. It is just as likely we photo shopped a picture just like we have in the past as manufacturing evidence is, well, somewhat a specialty we excel at. I recall some embarrassing facts about Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Vietnam, Korea, Pearl Harbor. Oh sorry, didn't mean to go on and on, but it does go on and on and on and on.

Maybe you haven't read history, where we toppled their govt. 60 years ago, put a brutal dictator into power (the Shah; thanks CIA), who wiped out large swaths of his own people. We'd be just as angry if someone did that to us. And a lot of this fear-mongering is generated by Israel, which wants us to fight a war they want by proxy.

Go back to 1950s when Iran had nothing to do with USA. Iran had a democratically elected leader – Mossadeh. Trouble began when he wanted to nationalize Iranian oil and gas. British Petroleum with the help of the. British and CIA ousted the democratically elected leadership in Iran and installed Shah their hand picked choice for running Iran. The western influence in Iran alarmed the mullahs and everything else you see in Iran is the impact of this development.
So yes, USA has a role in this. Oftentimes, USA goes for short term goals that result in things like this. Another example is the state of Afghanistan after the Cold War. Mujahideen that fought Afghanistan including an engineer called Osama BIn Laden were in the payroll of the. CIA.

When they're done with that they're going to get a boatload [no pun intended] of logs and pull that thing along - like the pyramid builders - while Iranian pilots practice their touch'and'gos. See? A moving test platform. Why anyone is allowing people still living in the pyramid age to get anywhere near nukes just boggles the imagination. It's like handing a two-year-old a live grenade. They have no idea ... and neither does Achmid AhWannaBeBad or however you spell it.

It IS being used to find MH370, however the flight debris is going to be mobile and one hell of a lot smaller.

Perhaps you've heard; the U.S. is well involved in using their 'technologies' to search for the missing plane. And, yes...since you've asked, there IS 'something doing' on that. China has identified a large piece of floating debris on satellite, a 70-something by 40-something foot piece, which is quite substantial. I hope & pray that today is the day they find the plane, one way or the other, so that the families and friends awaiting word can have some measure of knowledge as to what happened to their loved ones.

A wise man once said, "Never underestimate your enemy", Iranians go to the same schools our nautical engineers go to, so they have the knowhow. What they don't have access to is training for complex tactical deployment and countermeasures. Even if you were to believe this were an actual weapon, it takes more than one carrier to fullfill the threat of projecting your forces. A full carrier battle group requires multiple escort, support and defensive ships, which would be a stretch for Iran. If it's a decoy or a training aid, it's going to take alot of training and readiness exercises to take on a US carrier force, which would be pretty obvious. So we just have to keep an eye on them, this in itself is not a threat.

I hate to say but much of what is f-d up in the Middle East is due to the US sticking their noses in other nations affairs all for financial gain. A simple and effective foreign policy to adopt is basically respect every neighbours sovereignty and don't mess in their back yard. Examples? Creation of the state of Israel (by who? The US and United Nations which is run by the US), Noriega, Afghanistan, Bin Laden and the list goes on.

The western countries are always going to be a target no matter what. We are the Alpha-dog, the ones with technology and resources to do as we please. Have we interfered– you bet we have! Is it right or wrong? Well, we have to take care of #1 first, and adapt as needed. That's life.
Most if not all middle east countries are ruled by their religious leaders, they are slaves - often ignorant and blind (as our religious nuts in the US). The difference is that here we can confine the religious nuts with our laws and separation of state from religion it self.
        As for long term...
Until there is a winner there will never be peace. Sure we can pretend as we all have been doing. But someone needs to win, it's how nature works. Compromise is an illusion, it only works if all parties have equal and enough resources to sustain their well being.

This is because satellites in general are much more likely to have high resolution cameras imaging land mass. High resolution cameras take smaller images than the low resolution cameras. Its much more efficient to use the lower res satellites to cover a large area faster. Plus, time imaging with high resolution satellites is expensive, and with all due respect to the plane crash, the ocean is boring and not valuable in terms of imaging.

There a lot of imaging satellites on orbit. Some of them commercial, some military. The orbits of the satellites determine where they can image. A lot of imaging satellites are in Sun-synchronous orbits meaning that they're in daylight as much as possible. If the target area is in the dark its less likely that a satellite will be passing overhead to even take an image. Also, the field of view (how far off the cameras can see off of the satellites ground track (directly below the satellite)) is a limitation. A satellite may fly close, but not close enough for the instruments to point that far off tot he left or right to actually be able to image.

Drone ship perhaps? A launchpad for drone planes... Set it in the middle of the sea, you either have a real threat or a diversion... While their missile boats come from behind. Intimidation as well... Straight out of a NoKor handbook for mockups

Are you serious? Iran does not have the ability to build such a sophisticated piece of military hardware. Have you seen their so-called cruise missile? It looks like something out of World War II. How about their stealth flying boats? The engines on those boats would give off a very nice heat signature. Then there is that new stealth aircraft they showed off recently. Most avionic engineers have already stated the thing is not a good weapon platform much less able to fly. So to say that they are going to launch this as a fully functional A/C is a joke.

What a joke. We dealt with Russia when they were the USSR and they were FAR more dangerous back then. China does not even have the means to build their own Aircraft carrier they rebuilt an old Russian carrier and it still is not fully operational. Yet some how Iran is going to build a Super Carrier from scratch? HAHAHA get a grip. Iran is a religious dictatorship and when the oil runs out it will be the end of them. Forever.

it amazes me how many people think Iran can't or couldn't do this or that- they created a nuke program that we didn't stop, they have plenty of oil which is better than cash so even if they couldn't do it themselves they sure could pay someone to do it for them. They are buddy with Russia now so it wouldn't surprise me if Russia helps them out with any technology they need. Also they could probably just you tube how to build an aircraft carrier and learn how to do it. People should stop thinking other countries/people are stupid bc they are not. If they want to do something they certainly can find a way to do it the only question would be is would the USA with our current leadership really do anything about it or would they just sit around and talk.

DO NOT make a mistake with Iran....they are playing for time and WILL attain nuclear weapons if NO ONE stops them.

Iran is a big big threat to any of the western countries and to its neighbours in general and with religion leading the government (all religion is nonsense – invented by man for man) they will make some pretty stupid and very dangerous threats and decisions as already displayed.

        March 22, 2014 at 6:55 am |

If we apply our definition of terrorist to ourselves, we must battle ourselves to win the war on terror. This is my nation's problem. Our first terror organizations were raiders against the natives who we massacred. This started a really bad pattern for us. As we develop a tolerance for bad news about our past, it is possible we will think in terms of our current actions. Until then, laughter is the best medicine.

Every few years another scandal erupts but I see you just want to patrol the borders. Has it occurred to you this cant be a democracy of any sort unless you tolerate dissent? I guess not since yo being ou seem to think love it or leave it a political solution to being questioned at all. Is that why the military rapes so many of its own people? Am I on to something here? Expecting a military man like you to analyze war is like expecting a child molester to analyze and object to child abuse. It is not possible, It always make me shudder to hear soldiers explain our foreign policy like they have any moral authority at all. You are simply a version of child molester justifying your military career. That's why more violence is always your solution. It is time we analyze our soldiers for what they are. No, I don't support the troops any more than I support the child molesters. They both believe the world is out to confine them. And in that sense they are partly correct. No I won't leave. At least not until the war crime trials are over. I want a front seat.

Yes actually, it is different, if you can consider the Enlightnment as an actually change. Or even acknowledge our trashed international treaties as we muck about dominating the world. Oh dear.... 2014 and the US still doesn't understand the cultural role of appearances in the region. Should we be worried that we'll soon see another invasion "justified" by pure braggadocio of a country in the region being sold by US administrations as a clear and present danger? I'm afraid that's unlikely to work more than once for other nations. How about a mandatory course in intercultural competence for US politicians, government employees and media?

We are a land of religious intolerance. You can ask a number of groups about that going back about 200 years or more. The sunshine as in sunshine laws under the rule of law. No secrets. Secrets aren't that useful anyway, ask the NSA. Since you are a realist, I take it you are Vietnam generation? Also, the nature of your little petty insult over Coke gives me that impression. It is an elderly cultural reference. You have been to Iran and a visit makes you understand how it works. This is the same mistake the NSA made with Snowden, just FYI. Once the whole world is out to get you, the enemies resources are unlimited, of course, it is the whole freaking world. Why are they after us? Our freedoms, that's why. Our right to bully and invade the whole world freely and with surgical violent can not be restrained. How else can we defend ourselves from the blowback of our prior invasions? How will we justify future invasions if not like this? Even more important, how can we justify our violence to ourselves since no one else's opinion matters because they are all against us. Yeah, it all makes sense now. I am really starting to appreciate the genius of this article's author.

    • Anglyn

Hi neighbor. First of all, what you think counts. Second, the reason we have such an incapacity for all thoughts outside hysterics is our war economy which we feel is inescapable. It is ironic we "rule" the world but fear every development in it will collapse that. Changing this culture is the only thing that matters because the US is so aggressive, even over a "replica" by a nation not "capable" of building a real carrier. They will go back to hawking phantom nukes soon, but every instance of hysterics must refuted and ridiculed for what it is. Thank you for your comment.

What is wrong with you? Oh you are a "war protestor?" "You know everything about war?" Okay cool, fine.
But the United States only invaded Canada in two wars, the other instances were only small raiding parties, you should know that. Besides, Canada was still part of Great Britain then (well still "is" now" but surely someone as smart as you should know that).
Really if you are so ashamed of your country, you should just move, it really is not that hard as tons of people have done it before. I don't get where you are saying they kill their citizens in space, didn't know we had people living on the moon or something now, but you are the genius.

I know I know, war is bad, I hear you. I agree with you on that, however not everyone in the United States Military or Government is evil, you probably think they are. There are a lot of people who oppose war, believe me, I do as well, to an extent. I hope for peace and mutual agreements, but I also know that will never happen in my lifetime. We're bad for going to war, but "they" are just as bad or worse for waging wars on themselves and neighboring countries. Oh wait I forgot, according to your belief, all wars are manufactured by the US government. That without it, there would be no wars.

        I'm done here.

For the security gate, look north at 27.065346,55.965447 see also 27.067925,55.969183 and 27.077758,55.985778
The whole facility is fenced in, though it looks like if you want to walk out in the open for a while, you can get around the fence from the beach/ocean side. Housing at the last coordinate looks almost like 'base' housing/apartments. Nice neat rows/columns that don't match anywhere else.. like the area just to the east (right). The normal commercial area is to the east of where the 'AC carrier' is being built. Iran does have some pretty large drydocks (including floating drydocks), though this is not a 'drydock' If you compare the google maps version vs the yahoo/DigitalGlobe, there is a 1 year date difference in the date and there is a significant difference in what is at the construction site. This seems to be a fairly busy site. I don't know if this 'AC carrier' is going to be large enough to be functional though. The Nimitz is over 1000 feet long, using Google Maps and comparing the length of the buildings to the left of the construction (which are visible in Google Maps, while the actual ship isn't) to the legend index, gives the length of the Iranian 'AC carrier' at about 650 feet. This is a little large for a 'model'. Most US AC Carriers are near 1000 feet in length, though some old ones like USS Wright were down in the 600 foot length range. That said, at 650 feet, the landing strip is going to be a bit short (2/3s the length) and catapults are also going to be short (if they are even going to have functional ones – there is a trick to get them to work that most countries haven't gotten down, and length is important).

In my opinion, this very well could be a combat-training set, no different from the Urban Assault Training Center the US operates (or operated, not sure if it's still around) in Berlin, used for training for assaults on US carriers. Considering that a Nimitz-class carrier is often the centerpiece of US naval response to Iran, this makes at least some sense.

The mock up by Iran of an American Military Ship gives me cause to opine that it is probably for a reason that is not going to be beneficial to the U.S. The U.S. Administration should empirically confirm this abhoraton and take it out without notice. It is time for the Americans to proactively deal with perceived threats.
Iran is not a friend. They are a terrorist sponsering country that wishes harm (despite the consensus of its average citizen) on the West in general, and the U.S. in particular.

    Good Morning,
I think U.S should stop being so sensitive and worrying about what Iran does and what not! honestly as a half Iranian that knows a lot about the society in Iran I could assure you that the majority of Iranian people are veryyyy peaceful and they are just looking for a better life with higher qualities. I think U.S and Iran will eventually become the greatest partners in all fields! all I'm saying is that the mentality of the majority of Iranians even those "dictator" leaders is that they don't want to attack any country, of course until they are not being attacked by other countries...

You may be right, but those leaders are taking advantage of the history between Iran and the U.S to justify their acts! think of the whole history that has happened between U.S and Iran..On July 1988 an Iranian civilian passenger flight with 290 people on board including 66 children was shut down by U.S navy guided missile and the attack took place in the Iranian airspace. Every single of those people died in that incident. United States according to the history has never admitted responsibility nor apologized to the Iranian people. Don't you think that sort of behavior could cause a lot of mistrust? don't you believe that it's the history that makes the future of relationships specially international wide relationships? what do you think U.S would have done in return if such incident would have happened to a U.S passenger aircraft? "God forbid"! I think president Obama is doing a great job to keep up the dialogue between the countries! they need to resolve issues and matters one by one with discussions and conversations! we are humans and we must consider lots of conversations and dialog!

"I think president Obama is doing a great job to keep up the dialogue between the countries!" Obama... is that you? Or are you an NSA shill? Who cares if you think he's doing a great job? He's a God-hater, God hates those who hate him, and it's obvious Obama hates God.

We did so well under Bush.

We went from a moderate regime in Tehran to the most extreme since 1979.
All talks with North Korea broke down and they resumed there nuclear program that was mothballed under Clinton.

Internationally we were much better off in 2000 than in 1992.
Internationally we were much worse off in 2008 than in 2000.

Talks between Israel and Palestine. Improved 1992 to 2000. In shambles in 2008.

We have a lot of damage to rebuild.

    Iran1 and 2: "whisper-whisper-whisper-"
US: "uh, guys we can totally hear you..."
    Iran1: " ... we need a new plan... "
    Iran2: "shhh!!"

The Iranian government does not allow there people full access to the Internet like we have here in the united states but they did have access to a thing called twitter until recently. There government has jammed it. So there public do not have access to obtain this knowledge of the aircraft carrier being built. So now come up with a theory.

I believe it goes deeper than that. I bet it's a target for Chinese carrier-killer DF-21D missile that will be demonstrated to the world as not a weapon from China but a "new" Iranian weapon. China seems to buddy up with all the wrong countries on the planet. Time will tell. If not, I bet you're right. Iran is one strange government.

China buddies-up with those countries that are useful to China's goals. China doesn't care about its "international reputation." It understands that international relations are not a high school popularity contest and that the United Nations is a toothless sideshow.

Maybe they are actually building a carrier of the same size, maybe not as sophisticated with the experience of those by Americans?

in order to build a mock up, they'd have to have plans...so the question would be where did they get them?

Just walk into any toy store and you can find a detailed model of a US aircraft carrier – complete with a description of it's capabilities and what kind of aircraft it carries.

I'm with you. Israel has always been a concern. The influence it carries is far larger than a nation it's size should have.

They are not rich in oil, rich in minerals or manufacturing. What leverage does it have over America? I know all of the old tales. (I mean actual facts.)

Forward 20% is ridiculously narrow and looks more like the "ski-jump" bow than like an American twin-catapult bow. Probably a mock-up like the "stealth" combat aircraft they showed off last year and tried to get people to believe wasn't just an oversize plastic model. Nobody but the poor misled Iranian people believe any of this crap they claim to be making is anything more than a propaganda fantasy.

I don't think the Iranian people are that naive to believe their navy have such an aircraft carrier. With a little help they could eventually join the real world. Obama it seems has unfortunately chosen not to help but try to befriend the current tyrants.

Stop it... for God's sake stop it. This CNN article is absolute BS. The model of the ship is for a movie. I'm the first assistant technical camera operator for the middle eastern team. The mock-up is supposed to be done by the end of May, and shooting will begin in June. So, pull your heads out of your politically-demented-asses, and save your money for a block buster movie.. which will star Bruce Willis and Robert De Niro... Stay tuned.
