Why is Iran building giant mock-up of U.S. aircraft carrier?

Amid ongoing high-level diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran, it's a symbol of underlying mistrust.
Commercial satellite images obtained by CNN reveal that Iran is constructing a large-scale replica of a U.S. military aircraft carrier, complete with fake U.S-style airplanes, near the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.
The mock supercarrier seems to have been modeled off of an American Nimitz-class (CVN 68) carrier, down to the number "68" painted on the flight deck, though its intended use remains a mystery.
According to one U.S. official, the mock-up is more akin to a Hollywood set than an actual warship.
The U.S. government does not believe the carrier is functional, or that Iran is even capable of building an aircraft carrier.
The same official told CNN's Barbara Starr that while the purpose of the fake carrier is unknown, Iran may be planning to destroy it in a propaganda move. The Iranian government has blown up target barges in the past and aired the footage on its state-run media.
"If this is all for strategic effect," noted the official, "then with all eyes on the construction that seems to fizzle."
Nimitz-class carriers are the centerpiece of U.S. naval forces, and the largest warships in the world. Few countries have nuclear-powered carriers in their fleets.
The revelation that Iran is constructing this mock carrier comes at a potentially pivotal moment in U.S.-Iranian relations.
Back in November, negotiations between Iran and a coalition of countries that includes the United States brought about an interim agreement over Iran's nuclear program. Iran agreed to roll back parts of the program in exchange for an end to certain economic sanctions.
Negotiations on a larger deal are ongoing.
On Thursday, in a message to the Iranian people to commemorate the Persian new year, President Barack Obama said he is "committed to diplomacy" with their country.
But amid the softened rhetoric, there is lingering mistrust in both countries.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the American Jewish Congress in New York on Wednesday that she is "personally skeptical that the Iranians would follow through and deliver" on the November deal.
And in January, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told CNN's Jim Sciutto that the Obama administration has been mischaracterizing the terms of the agreement.
For now, the outcome of these diplomatic efforts and the fate of the fake aircraft carrier remain uncertain.

They're obviously building a training facility for special forces to practice boarding and taking over ships. The fact that this is NEVER going to happen is irrelevant. Our military trains for situations where it will have to invade cities (just like ours), are you upset about that? ... Iran should have done this long time before to protect itself from Israel and the Arabs. CNN (Israeli TV) always want to start a war against Iran. And this article is another example. Do you know how expensive it is to build an aircraft carrier? And not just the vessel itself, but the facilities to build it and install material and equipment into the hull? It takes Newport News 4 years to build one and 2 more before delivery getting all the systems up and running. This is just a prop to make psychos like you froth at the mouth.
"Truth" Iran does not build their own airplanes, in fact they still fly a bunch of F-14 and F-15 we sold them when the Sha was in power, they mostly buy from Russia now. They definitely don't build aircraft carriers. They don't have the technical know how or the infrastructure to support an aircraft carrier even if they did.

The "mock up," if you look at it closely, is not an accurate "copy" of a Nimitz-class carrier. The flight deck, for one, is not cantered on the port side to the degree that an actual Nimitz-class carrier would be. It looks more like it came out of someone's vivid imagination than an actual carrier. All the lines are rounded, not geometric like a real Nimitz vessel would be. To me, its more humorous than anything.

I was on the Nimitz carrier as a guest and there is very little chance that Iranians are making a real version of the ship. Maybe, it is for a movie set!
That's what I'm thinking. And even that isn't a great reason. But it's got nothing to do with training to steal or sink one. That's silly. You don't waste resources on a full scale mock up for that. If you want to test a missile penetration capability, you simply take some old ship that's been mothballed and add armor to the desired thickness. It doesn't have to "look" the same. If you want to practice for special forces, you build a mock up of the INTERIOR in some facility on a base. Frankly, since they know we'll see it, they're probably just messing with us. Who knew the Iranians had that good of a sense of humor? They're just messing with our conspiracy nut's heads! hahaha!
And if they built a giant wooden bunny as a military weapon, that might not work. It is just as likely we photo shopped a picture just like we have in the past as manufacturing evidence is, well, somewhat a specialty we excel at. I recall some embarrassing facts about Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Vietnam, Korea, Pearl Harbor. Oh sorry, didn't mean to go on and on, but it does go on and on and on and on.

This picture was taken by a geosynchronous satellite positioned to watch one area. The pictures over the Indian Ocean are taken by orbiting satellites that aren't as good at the fine print and only pass by occasionally.
Ok so if the blow it up as propaganda, the U.S. should say they did such a great job with the replica it fooled us into thinking they actually sunk one of our carriers, bomb their nuke facilities and any other targets we need to take out, blame it on satellite images and their youtube video.

The western influence in Iran alarmed the mullahs and everything else you see in Iran is the impact of this development.

Perhaps you've heard; the U.S. is well involved in using their 'technologies' to search for the missing plane. And, yes...since you've asked, there IS 'something doing' on that. China has identified a large piece of floating debris on satellite, a 70-something by 40-something foot piece, which is quite substantial. I hope & pray that today is the day they find the plane, one way or the other, so that the families and friends awaiting word can have some measure of knowledge as to what happened to their loved ones.

A wise man once said, "Never underestimate your enemy", Iranians go to the same schools our nautical engineers go to, so they have the knowhow. What they don't have access to is training for complex tactical deployment and countermeasures. Even if you were to believe this were an actual weapon, it takes more than one carrier to fullfill the threat of projecting your forces. A full carrier battle group requires multiple escort, support and defensive ships, which would be a stretch for Iran. If it's a decoy or a training aid, it's going to take alot of training and readiness exercises to take on a US carrier force, which would be pretty obvious. So we just have to keep an eye on them, this in itself is not a threat.

Roll that date back to the second world war at least and we will be on to something. The Vietnam generation did not invent what they are doing. The post WWII elders are living out their parents politics without a single grab at their own history or direction. Cnn fails to figure out the obvious. This is for training purposes in the event we were at war with Iran. They'll probably use it to train teams how to navigate to critical areas onboard to disable and overtake the carrier. It's a smart move for a millitary.

The western countries are always going to be a target no matter what. We are the Alpha-dog, the ones with technology and resources to do as we please. Have we interfered– you bet we have! Is it right or wrong? Well, we have to take care of #1 first, and adapt as needed. That's life.
Most if not all middle east countries are ruled by their religious leaders, they are slaves - often ignorant and blind (as our religious nuts in the US). The difference is that here we can confine the religious nuts with our laws and separation of state from religion it self.
As for long term...
Until there is a winner there will never be peace. Sure we can pretend as we all have been doing. But someone needs to win, it's how nature works. Compromise is an illusion, it only works if all parties have equal and enough resources to sustain their well being.

This is because satellites in general are much more likely to have high resolution cameras imaging land mass. High resolution cameras take smaller images than the low resolution cameras. Its much more efficient to use the lower res satellites to cover a large area faster. Plus, time imaging with high resolution satellites is expensive, and with all due respect to the plane crash, the ocean is boring and not valuable in terms of imaging.
Then why not focus on smaller area as u already spotted something?

There a lot of imaging satellites on orbit. Some of them commercial, some military. The orbits of the satellites determine where they can image. A lot of imaging satellites are in Sun-synchronous orbits meaning that they're in daylight as much as possible. If the target area is in the dark its less likely that a satellite will be passing overhead to even take an image. Also, the field of view (how far off the cameras can see off of the satellites ground track (directly below the satellite)) is a limitation. A satellite may fly close, but not close enough for the instruments to point that far off tot he left or right to actually be able to image.
Drone ship perhaps? A launchpad for drone planes... Set it in the middle of the sea, you either have a real threat or a diversion... While their missile boats come from behind. Intimidation as well... Straight out of a NoKor handbook for mockups

Most avionic engineers have already stated the thing is not a good weapon platform much less able to fly. So to say that they are going to launch this as a fully functional A/C is a joke.

It is definitely funny that American commercial satellites have far better resolution than China's military grade satellites. The Chinese satellite image can't really make out a 70 x 40 meter object. Google Earth can make out people where they show their highest resolution images, like the Google campus.

Having served on board the Nimitz I tell you that this mockup doesn't look anything like her, the angles are all wrong, it looks like a giant paddle. Anyone saying that this "carrier" is more than a mockup doesn't know the first thing about carriers. I'd be surprised if this giant soup can could float...

Again having Served aboard the Nimitz I can tell you right now that that flight deck setup is all wrong. They've only got two Catapult systems mocked up, the landing angle is way off I could go on... I was an ABH and worked the flight deck I still smell JP-5 even though it has been years since I was last on her.
The only thing this Mockup would be good for was target practice, and if they tried it on the real deal they would have to get past her escorts, her fighters, and her defensive weaponry.

The whole facility is fenced in, though it looks like if you want to walk out in the open for a while, you can get around the fence from the beach/ocean side. Housing at the last coordinate looks almost like 'base' housing/apartments. Nice neat rows/columns that don't match anywhere else.. like the area just to the east (right). The normal commercial area is to the east of where the 'AC carrier' is being built. Iran does have some pretty large drydocks (including floating drydocks), though this is not a 'drydock' If you compare the google maps version vs the yahoo/DigitalGlobe, there is a 1 year date difference in the date and there is a significant difference in what is at the construction site. This seems to be a fairly busy site. I don't know if this 'AC carrier' is going to be large enough to be functional though. The Nimitz is over 1000 feet long, using Google Maps and comparing the length of the buildings to the left of the construction (which are visible in Google Maps, while the actual ship isn't) to the legend index, gives the length of the Iranian 'AC carrier' at about 650 feet. This is a little large for a 'model'. Most US AC Carriers are near 1000 feet in length, though some old ones like USS Wright were down in the 600 foot length range. That said, at 650 feet, the landing strip is going to be a bit short (2/3s the length) and catapults are also going to be short (if they are even going to have functional ones – there is a trick to get them to work that most countries haven't gotten down, and length is important).
In my opinion, this very well could be a combat-training set, no different from the Urban Assault Training Center the US operates (or operated, not sure if it's still around) in Berlin, used for training for assaults on US carriers. Considering that a Nimitz-class carrier is often the centerpiece of US naval response to Iran, this makes at least some sense.
Like they are capable of even getting close to the ship, unless they are going to attack with their fleet of flying carpets.
