Why is Iran building giant mock-up of U.S. aircraft carrier?

By Laura Koran

Amid ongoing high-level diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran, it's a symbol of underlying mistrust.

Commercial satellite images obtained by CNN reveal that Iran is constructing a large-scale replica of a U.S. military aircraft carrier, complete with fake U.S-style airplanes, near the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.

The mock supercarrier seems to have been modeled off of an American Nimitz-class (CVN 68) carrier, down to the number "68" painted on the flight deck, though its intended use remains a mystery.

According to one U.S. official, the mock-up is more akin to a Hollywood set than an actual warship.

The U.S. government does not believe the carrier is functional, or that Iran is even capable of building an aircraft carrier.

The same official told CNN's Barbara Starr that while the purpose of the fake carrier is unknown, Iran may be planning to destroy it in a propaganda move. The Iranian government has blown up target barges in the past and aired the footage on its state-run media.

"If this is all for strategic effect," noted the official, "then with all eyes on the construction that seems to fizzle."

Nimitz-class carriers are the centerpiece of U.S. naval forces, and the largest warships in the world. Few countries have nuclear-powered carriers in their fleets.

The revelation that Iran is constructing this mock carrier comes at a potentially pivotal moment in U.S.-Iranian relations.

Back in November, negotiations between Iran and a coalition of countries that includes the United States brought about an interim agreement over Iran's nuclear program. Iran agreed to roll back parts of the program in exchange for an end to certain economic sanctions.

Negotiations on a larger deal are ongoing.

On Thursday, in a message to the Iranian people to commemorate the Persian new year, President Barack Obama said he is "committed to diplomacy" with their country.

But amid the softened rhetoric, there is lingering mistrust in both countries.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the American Jewish Congress in New York on Wednesday that she is "personally skeptical that the Iranians would follow through and deliver" on the November deal.

And in January, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told CNN's Jim Sciutto that the Obama administration has been mischaracterizing the terms of the agreement.

For now, the outcome of these diplomatic efforts and the fate of the fake aircraft carrier remain uncertain.

I hear that Revell plastic model kits of the USS Nimitz are also available in Iran. This is a national security crisis – time to shoot down another Iranian passenger jet.

So if somebody destroys Iran's mockup aircraft carrier, and they could tea-party it themselves, then they've mocked-up an excuse for going to fullscale war...nukes and all....they need only convince themselves–their own thralls...

The mock-up is supposed to be done by the end of May, and shooting will begin in June. So, pull your heads out of your politically-demented-asses, and save your money for a block buster movie.. which will star Bruce Willis and Robert De Niro... Stay tuned.

For anyone interested to see how much of a simple mock up, look it up on google maps to see what it was earlier this year:

Enter these coordinates in the google map search box 27.054747, 55.972686

If those coords are correct the satellite picture must have been updated, not seeing any carrier. Buildings match up though, but look like they've been covered in soot.

Iran is feeling its oats! After thoroughly hoodwinking Obama and the Ketchup King (John Kerry) they are off to the races and will continue with provocative actions and of course development of a nuclear weapon. The sanctions were working and Iran was really feeling the pain but Obama and Kerry lifted the sanction and now Iran will have the bomb – facts are they probably already have the bomb and are just lacking a delivery system. To say Obama has been a disaster as POTUS – is the worlds worst understatement!

I've been on the USS Nimitz twice as a civilian here in Seattle. Once before Sept 11 & once after. The first time it had all kinds of cool planes on the flight deck as well as nuclear weapons. The second time, not so much. But, security was crazy with Navy personnel on little boats armed with M16's circling the thing. It's a whole new world. I'm glad I got to see it the first time. It's pretty incredible how much power is involved there. Made me proud to be an American.

That's cool that you were able to visit the USS Nimitz, but I had to comment on one specific thing you said. There are NO nuclear weapons on board the ship. Bombs and missiles, yes. The ship is a nuclear powered ship, though. I was stationed on an aircraft carrier from 2000 to 2004, worked in the reactor department (where the nuclear reactor was) and then worked in another department that needed a higher security clearance. NO one was allowed down near the reactor, and even when sailors needed to go down for a qualification (ESWS), they went down to the main machinary room (MMR), no where near the reactor, and the reactor was shut down. We do not carry nuclear weapons on a carrier, and if we did, they definitely would not allow the civilian public to be anywhere near them.

Thank you for your service. I served aboard the USS America (CV66) from 1988-1992. With all due respect, I'm not entirely sure that you can lawfully state what you did and be truthful. I know I had to learn the following statement and to use it when asked if nuclear weapons were aboard the America: "I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of nuclear weapons of any type aboard the USS America." To state definitively that there were or weren't any nukes aboard was against Navy regulations, and unless one was in Weapons Division (which encompasses all bombs, missiles, and fired projectiles aboard, whether nuclear or conventional) one frankly didn't know whether there were nukes aboard or not. As a proud member of the Engineering Department, I was simply not privy to that information.

        March 22, 2014 at 12:48 am |
      • DanBun

The US Navy does not provide information on whether or not a certain ship is carrying nuclear weapons.
This has been an issue, especially with regards to New Zealand.
However, in the past, our carriers have indeed carried nuclear weapons, both as old-style bombs and more recently as cruise missile warheads. We might have also had nuclear-armed torpedoes in the past, but that's never really been verified.

      • widewater

In 1976 I was stationed onboard an Aircraft Carrier. I was on a working party that off-loaded nuclear weapons.
Internal security was set and no one, who wasn't part of the operation, was allowed in the hanger bay where
the bombs were being prepared for off-load. As you know, internal security, means Marines. They were
guarding the bombs, while we were moving the bombs.

        March 22, 2014 at 1:11 am |
      • Major Obvious (got promoted!)

Unless you had the clearance, you would not know if there were nuclear weapons on board.

If you had the clearance, you would know better than to be talking about them here.

The international criminal court has jurisdiction over nations unwilling or incapable of prosecuting their own leaders. Don't ever trust the Iranians! When China bought the unfinished aircraft carrier the Varyag from Ukraine, they said they planed to turned it into a floating museum or floating gambling ship. That was a complete lie. The Varyag was refinished by the Chinese and is now a fully operational aircraft carrier. From that single ship, they plan to construct dozens more.
Iran is likely building this mock-up for a future aircraft carrier battle group.

And what does any of this have to do with trust or mistrust? There are a total of 12 commissioned aircraft carriers in the world. The US owns 11 of them. By your nonsensical logic, the US is the least trustworthy country in the world.

There are more carriers than that. France, China, India and Russia each have a carrier capable of operating high performance combat jets from. Italy has two smaller STOVL carriers, the Garibaldi and the Cavour. Spain and Thailand have one each, Australia has two under construction, and the Brits have two large carriers under construction. India has another under construction and China has two more under construction.

But this Iranian thing is kind of laughable.

They're likely building it to film its destruction by blowing it up using whatever missiles they have to do the job. They'll run it on state TV and claim they've killed one of ours. There's an outside chance that the full scale replica will be towed out to sea and then targeted. Even if it's just a testing bed, the destruction will be broadcast as real.

Claiming to have blown up a real American carrier will immediately be proven false when the DoD points out that all of ours are still intact, and does not respond with an invasion and elimination of the current Iranian regime.

You would need to simulate the rest of the carrier battle group(subs, frigates, E-2s, aegis defenses, etc) that would be encircling the carrier for it to really mean anything. Otherwise, drawing up battle plans to attack a lone carrier is rather pointless.

Maybe they're using it to test missiles.

China also built a mockup of a US carrier in 2011 to test their anti-ship ballistic missiles. Perhaps Iran is doing the same, except that a realistic replica is being used for propaganda purposes at the same time.

The west should be cautious instead of laughing. Iran has a history of media showmanship but when it comes to the real fight, they are very good at it.

After America $4 trillion in Iraq, it is now a Iranian outpost.

Tell me that that wasn't a masterful Iranian move.

And after the US and NATO was backing Syrian al-Qaeda terrorists with all the support they could muster, it is Iranian paramilitaries and military leadership who are instrumental in Assad's current upper hand in the Syrian conflict.

Yes indeed mock them at our own peril. How about building it to test attacking a nimitz class aircraft carrier. Putting one of them on the bottom of the ocean would be a great political coup for the Iranians.

Shooting at a mockup that doesn't shoot back is one thing. Shooting at a real US aircraft carrier that has an entire battle group for defense and huge offensive capability would Iran's worst nightmare. Israel would love it though. The next day we would take out all of Iran's nuclear facilities.

it would be a good thing if they were trying to build a real Nimitz class carrier. the effort would soak up a grossly disproportionate part of their economy while giving them nothing in return, much as Soviet static air defense of the Motherland impoverished the rest of their military. carrier aviation and carrier-based naval warfare are far from easy. it took this country years to learn how to operate a carrier-based fleet, and we have far more resources than Iran. they don't have the industrial capacity or the kind of educated population required to support this kind of warship. even Russia, with far more national wealth and population, never really mastered the trick. I suspect that even the Iranians know they can't pull it off, and there is some other purpose in mind for the mock-up.

Looks more like the shipyards between Tavanir Town and Bandar Abbas. There are two dry docks next to each other in the right arm of the shipyard. Lots of other naval ships there too. Nothing in the drydocks, and no cranes, but those are easily added. And in the left of the dry docks, the outline looks sort of like a carrier shape. Maybe early layout when this photo was taken?

You honestly have no idea what you're talking about. Aircraft carriers are never alone. They are always escorted by a battlegroup of frigates and destroyers. All of which have active anti-ordinance systems specifically to deal with such a threat. The only way you're sinking a carrier is by sneaking up to it in a zodiac and planting explosives on the hull (very hard to do) or by hitting it with a railgun.

I would say that with high probability that the U.S. knows what Iran is capable of and knows thy enemy. Start knowing thyself and think before ye posts again.

I spent many years in the Navy onboard a Carrier. We knew where the Iranian ships were at ALL times and often laughed about their silly antics. I remember when the Russians gave them a Sub and they ran it aground. Haha! If you think it's easy to get close to a super carrier and think it's completely defenseless when something DOES get launched against it then YOU need to do some research because I assure you that it IS NOT an easy task.

If you are training to attack a structure -like, maybe, an aircraft carrier – don't you think it might be more important to have an exact replica of the INSIDE ? Just a thought.

Like the Somali pirates the CVN is going to be boarded, all personnel will hide out somewhere in the ship, while they take the com. Then the Maldive Navy will send out their SEALS to rescue the captain and the crew. It will make a good movie.

        March 22, 2014 at 5:37 am |
      • Anglyn

You missed the part about the idea Iranians cant build a replica. If they could, and lots of other capacities, maybe, just maybe, stretched as far as we can take it, it could be a minor problem. It is a non starter so they can talk about dreadful Iranians and how they threaten powerful us. What if they managed to sink one of our carriers? We have more, and an air force, army, and real nukes. Fearing the Iranians is hysterics, and has been for 20 years. It is a Vietnam generation obsession.

        March 22, 2014 at 5:42 am |
    • TimeParadox

If the Iranians are going to use it for target practice, then where is the rest of the carrier battlegroup? Can they simulate the subs and ships that will be encircling the carrier? How about the E-2s providing radar coverage? Aegis? It's not as if there will be a lone carrier floating close to Iranian shores that they can freely take shots at it. It's like building a mockup of the Whitehouse for your war games. Absolutely pointless.

As a former Navy Electronic Warfare Operator who specialized in Russian and Chinese Missle systems, we are quite aware of their capabilites and how to fight them. Also no US Carrier is ever unescorted, they tend to be escorted by the most advance warships in the world which includes state of the art anti missle systems. Matter of fact most of a task force's picket ships are for one reason to protect the Carrier at all costs.

      • Ramon

Thank you sir, the bottom line is the defense against these systems is at work in the everyday life of a carrier group and in the research industry. Whoever makes the attempt will pay dearly on the counter attack courtesy of air sea and undersea carrier group members.

Surely you are either joking or you are 12 years old. Please don't scare me that there really are people out there who are so incredibly gullible (read stupid) that they believe you can build an aircraft carrier in a few months with a workforce of 7th grade educated soldiers and a bunch of plywood? Seriously? This barge with a Hollywood "aircraft carrier set" built on it, is mean't for the Iranian sequel to Top Gun – where the Iranian fleet of Revolutionary Guard Speedboats (complete with suicide bomber water skiers) attacks and sinks the evil American Carrier in the strait of Hormuz. What a waste! All that plywood could have been used to build " Iranian Disneyland" or Iranian Ice Fishing houses.

Clearly, you've never been to Iran. Iranians are neither stupid, nor ignorant (unlike many people who seem to comment on foreign cultures they have never visited). Understanding how to build complex, multi-billion dollar equipment, and having the money to actually do it, are two completely different subjects.

      • Strategic Bob

        Freedom,

you are an f'ing id 1 0t. every competent investigation of benghazi has shown that it WAS carried out by local militia in response to the video and inspired by the violent response to the video in Cairo. in the recent IRS controversy, the IRS looked at both conservative and liberal political action groups, none of them were impeded in doing what they wanted while the examinations were going on, and only one group – a liberal group – was ultimately told that it did not qualify for the tax exempt status that it tried to claim. you are right that the IRS has been used against political enemies but the last real misuse of the IRS for partisan political purposes was by the Republicans under Richard Nixon. as far as the government is concerned, everyone could have kept their insurance. it was the insurance companies that decided to cancel policies rather than revise them to provide the kind of coverage required by the law. doctors are not slaves and are free to refuse seeing a patient if they wish. as to supporting this President, I have been more than a bit disappointed in his performance, but he is so much better than his predecessor that there is no comparison. even if the stupid Rethuglicans and TEAtards were not obstructing everything, it would take decades to even begin undoing the damage that George W. Bush, Richard (those who know him call him "Dick") Cheney, and Republican ideas did to this country.

"every competent investigation of benghazi has shown that it WAS carried out by local militia in response to the video and inspired by the violent response to the video in Cairo" That's not what the Senate Intelligence Committee's report said. It specifically connected it to Al Qaeda.
