U.S., Chinese warships come dangerously close

A confrontation between the U.S. and Chinese navies led to a tense moment in the South China Sea, CNN has learned.
The incident last Friday, which was resolved peacefully, was the latest sign of Chinese military aggression in international waters and airspace.
A U.S. Navy warship was forced to come to a sudden stop when a Chinese military ship crossed dangerously close in what sources described as a deliberate maneuver.
No weapons were fired and the incident was resolved.
A senior U.S. Navy official described it as a highly unusual encounter because the Chinese ship came so close to the American vessel, the USS Cowpens, a guided missile cruiser.
Several U.S. military officials confirmed details of the incident, which has just come to light.
The Cowpens was in international waters when one ship from a group of Chinese Navy vessels headed toward it. The Chinese ship failed to stop, even after being warned by radio from the Cowpens that it was getting too close.
According to the Navy official, the Cowpens commanding officer issued orders for an "all stop" when the Chinese ship was less than 500 yards off its bow.
"It is unusual to have to take evasive action at sea to avoid a collision," the official said.
While naval vessels often come close as they are observing each other, the United States sees this incident as one that could have led to a collision because of the time and distance it takes for an American warship to stop.

On the other hand, we don't need to own the whole Pacific Ocean nor do we need any ships in either the Indian Ocean nor the Mediterranean Sea as George already stated above. Read the article, the U.S. vessel was in international waters, so both ships are bound by the international rules for safe navigation. As a former Merchant Marine and Naval Officer I now the rules. U.S. carriers are routinely tracked closely by foreign navies and there is nothing we can do about it, they are within their rights to be there, by the bye so are we. We do have an escort shadow the vessel and the task force may at times try to out run it, but we never intentionaly put them or us into a collision situation.
This was a tactic of the Soviet Navy back in the day. They would try to block us away and sometimes intentionally hit our vessels and try to blame us. Guess China found that playbook.
I also saw the but, but, but we have vessels off their coast lame arguement from someone. Its international waters, tough. There are foreign vessels off our coast right now doing the same thing.
Too bad the US mothballed all four Iowa class battleships. Had it been an Iowa battleship that Chinese ship was about to crossed into, two things would have happened – nothing says "STOP" like a 15 inch gun at close range or "Yeah right" – a ship that size is going to be able to stop in time, to not slice your ship in half and notice it did so.
All this tactic shows is that our ships should prepare to be better armed for close quarters combat, as Chinese military vessels appear to have a "kamikazi" streak in them. And seriously, forget about stealth, just put bigger and better guns on US warships.

While China may be a friend of no one, the US has even less friends right now. Furthermore I'm not sure it would be wise to "hit" them. China is bigger and stronger than the US is right now and it has Russia to back it up if need be. Russia is also bigger and stronger than the US is right now. Additionally the US depends upon China for much of the manufactured goods that make it go. It's unwise to anger one's main supplier when one has no other options. As such, the best approach is probably to acknowledge the superior position of China in this region and get out as soon as possible. A "pivot" to this part of the globe was a foolish idea whose time has long passed. Had this actually resulted in a shooting incident, the American battle ship would have been sunk, any American ship attempting to assist would have been sunk as well, the Chinese battle ship would have emerged unscathed, and the world have rushed to condemn the US for unnecessarily provoking the Chinese. Essentially the American crew and ship live only because the Chinese chose to allow them to do so. The American military and the American government got played and seem to be to foolish to understand that. It's far better and saner to redeploy to positions that make sense for America's national defense needs than it is to try and risk a fight with China. That is a fight that America cannot win and furthermore America depends upon China for much of the manufactured goods that it needs to operate. Basic common sense suggests that one does not take steps that would anger their main supplier when there are no other real alternatives. The only constructive role in this that American war ships might be able to play would be acting in ways to ensure the shipping lanes remain open. Since America's main supplier is China, this might mean siding with the Chinese in order to ensure these shipments continue, however, the Chinese are fully capable of handling that so there really seems no constructive role for the US in this. Of course steps will want to be taken by the Americans to wean themselves off of dependence on others such as the Chinese but that is the current situation. Only with an honest assessment of America's current situation can American policy makers craft intelligent policies. Right now such an honest assessment seems to be lacking.

Golem: While it may be true that Russia and China distrust one another, given their recent cooperation of late it seems incorrect to suggest they "hate" each other. Actually the BRICS consisting of Russia, China, Brazil, India, and South Africa is now the most powerful cohesive and cohesive alliance of nation states operating along with their other allies. This alliance is far more cohesive and capable than any thing the "West" has to offer. It's far superior to any thing that NATO or any thing else America and it's allies can muster. This combined with China's control of the vital control and the numerous allies that Russia and China have in the South and Central America mean China and it's allies can currently shut down the US economy and crush it militarily at will and their is not a thing America can do about it. While shutting down the US economy would have a short term adverse affect on China it is not as severe as what America would suffer.
You may be asking why don't Russia or China acting either alone or individually simply do this? As I think it was Napoleon who once said to paraphrase it makes no sense to interfere with an enemy who is destroying themselves. It's likely far easier for them to simply wait while America implodes due to foolish social, economic, and foreign policy actions.
fookingod: Russian and Chinese citizens are not dying to seek refuge in the US. You phrase this a question of "why", since it is not happening, the premise posed by the question is false, a bit like saying why is hot at the South Pole? The chief problem the US has with uncontrolled immigration is along the border with Mexico. Mexico is attempting to relocate large numbers of its citizens to the US in order to regain lands lost in the Mexican-American war as well as Texas. The US government is either to foolish or to blinded by ideology to understand that.
As for immigration to the US from Russia and China in general, this probably does still happen to a degree. Some come here for economic opportunities, to gain certain knowledge that they can take back to their homelands to use against America to undermine it, and perhaps some to be with family already here. That has been part of the special nature of America for centuries. Immigration is likely a good thing but the nation currently has uncontrolled immigration and the system is a complete mess. The best approach here is likely a ten year moratorium on all immigration to give the authorities breathing space to address the problems in the system. While this is being worked on, the nation could look into guest worker programs such as what other nations use. The point being it would be unethical to disallow someone an opportunity who is beneficial to the nation, who will not adversely affect those already here, and lacks genuine opportunities in their home country. The current situation where immigration is uncontrolled, at least on the southern border, the nation to the south is at best moderately hostile, and the surrounding nations are heavily influenced by enemies of America such immigration policies are unsustainable at best and very likely foolhardy.

China could win a war with the U.S., provided we launch a military drive deep into their heartland like the J apanese did in 1937 and fought a long and protracted war there. The Chinese will sustain huge losses but will literally bleed us white in the process and our economy will collapse. This is precisely why getting rid of nuclear weapons is such a terrible idea!

The military trained me to speak Mandarin Chinese but I'm not going to wait around to see what promise gets broken next. Hope China doesn't do anything drastic while they train my replacement. The Chinese do have reason to fear us, Guest. We've been aggressive almost since we gained our independence from Great Britain in 1783, starting with the subjugation of Indians in the Northwest Territory(Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan) and then there was the Mexican-American War(1846-1848). Need I say more?
How about the war between North Korean and South Korean in 1950s? Do I need to mention Vietnam?
In fact Marsiss, China had very little to do with the war in Vietnam except to sell small arms to the Vietnamese in their struggle for national unity which both Germany and Italy had to do 100 years earlier for the very same reason. As for Korea, China only got involved to keep the UN forces off their border on the Yalu River. They well remembered that the J apanese also had troops on the Yalu in 1937 from where they invaded China proper!

China is testing the US authority over this territory. They are going to keep doing so increasingly in the future. I fail to understand the United States grand strategy in this. Trade with China, make them rich, give them manufacturing skills and resources so that they can build a military to challenge yours in the future, while all you get in return is cheap goods that will only bring a few corporations short term profits.
While I'm sure the money looks great right now I can't help but think 10-30 years down the line that one day China is going to be the power base and we'll just be a has-been country like Britain after it lost it's empire. And it's going to be because our greed gave them that power.
And something tells if they gather sufficient technology and built a powerful enough military, the cost of their "cheap" goods would increase dramatically.

We trade with China because the people(you and I) want cheap goods. If you haven't noticed, most things we own are made in china. If the Chinese didn't make such cheap goods the Walmarts and targets would cease to exist, goods would be way too expensive, and we wouldn't have an emerging economy in china that one day will buy our expensive goods and services. So don't fear trade with china. Trade makes everyone better.

So guys, we have china playing chicken with us, Russia warning us they will nuke us, nk slaying kim's uncle, the list goes on. What we need to do is speak with Russia, as Putin is by far the most reasonable , rational actor on the stage. Negate chance of issue with them and reach common understanding. At this point i think we would like them to aid syria in resolving their terrorist problem. At this point we really have nothing to grasp to to try to talk them out of it. Our guys are safe according to the news. Somewhere in there is an agreement with Russia about Syria reforming and having talks between the legitimate unhappy syrians , and the government, in exchange for support with their ongoing mission to restore stability to syria while encouraging reform . Button syria up. Putin won't back down but it seems he has proven if you goto the table with an open mind he can be relied on. Forced communication (read spying) got us threw the cold war. Lets see if we can learn from that and just communicate now and work together. Aside from taking pot shots at us Putin has been reasonable to work with. More so than anyone we have worked with in a long time (islamic militias etc).
It seems likely China is going to push this until something happens. There will need to be something to discourage conflict. I see that possibility above.

So, calling them hostile is fine but please don't call them floating trash. Let's not kidding ourselves. Also, our warship was following their carrier fleet in South China sea (international water). They apparently got upset or shy for being watched so closely. That's all. Imagine what would happen if someone dares to get so close to our George Washington.
