If Israel strikes Iran, Dempsey says U.S. 'would meet' obligations

By Dan Merica

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey said Monday that if Israel were to strike Iran in an effort to damage the country's nuclear program, the United States would meet "some defined obligations" it has to the Middle East nation.

"I feel like we have a deep obligation to Israel," the military leader said. "That is why we are in constant contact and collaboration with them."

This fall, diplomats from the United States and other interested countries have met to deal with Iran's nuclear program and ways in which advancements could be halted.

According to a senior administration official last week, the United States and other countries are "getting close" to an interim deal with Iran that would prevent its nuclear program "from advancing, and roll it back" in key areas.

The deal would lessen sanctions against Iran, a move that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told CNN on Sunday would be a mistake. Instead, the Israeli leader said Western nations should "ratchet up the sanctions" on Iran rather than go through with a proposal for a nuclear agreement that he calls an "extremely bad deal."

"Iran is really on the ropes, their economy is ... close to paralysis, and all of a sudden, you take off the pressure, everybody will understand that you're heading south," he said.

This is not the first time in the last week American leaders have looked to reaffirm the United States' commitment to Israel.
Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, in an exclusive interview with CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr, said Saturday night the United States is "listening carefully" to Israel. He reiterated that Washington is continuing its longtime strategy to ensure that Iran cannot gain the capability of building nuclear weapons.

Earlier on Monday, Secretary of State John Kerry made a similar statement.

"We believe deeply in our commitment to Israel," Kerry said during a media availability. "I can assure those friends and everybody else watching this that nothing that we are doing here, in my judgment, will put Israel at any additional risk."

Dempsey's Monday remarks came during the Wall Street Journal CEO Council, an event that brings CEOs from around the world to Washington to meet with policy makers and listen to public interviews.

Dempsey credited Israel with being "an example of what could be" in the Middle East.

"If we had one of my Israeli counterparts sitting here, they would tell you that most of the Arabs living in Israel have a better life than the Arabs living in the rest of the region and that is true," he said.

– CNN's Jim Sciutto and Steve Almasy contributed to this report.

So what this guy is saying, we would support Israel in an unprovoked attack on Iran? This guy needs to retire AND Obama needs to make it real clear to Israel and Iran that NO unprovoked attack by either party will be encouraged/supported by the USA.

Maybe there is NO advantage to the USA for a war with Iran.? What would Middle America have to gain?

Then you have the flip side of the coin. If Iran was a trading partner, I can see we would have something to gain, increased leverage, without the need for an expensive military presence.

The Obama administration is clearly trying everything possible to defuse the situation in the Middle East. I don't think any of this necessarily speaks to our support for Israel or our opposition to tyranny in Iran.

An attack on Iran would be an illegal at of war. The Iranian response would cause world wide problems with a serious oil shortage in Europe with the U.S. and Israel held responsible. We need to remember how close Iran is to major oil supplies in Saudi Arabia that could be destroyed in a matter of hours.

The Missiles Iran currently have deployed are old and very easily defeated wtih todays ECM capability. And even if it aquires the newer SA 300 (which actually isnt all that new) it has been trying to buy it simply necessitates a change in tactics to defeat. Also while Iran may have a large number of surface to surface medium range missiles to strike Israel back with It has few launchers to deliver them. Israels challange will not be in taking on Iranian forces but logistics such as jet refueling.

I believe is more effective to send an ARMY OF JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES, MORMONS AND HARE KRISHNA to all Muslim nations in conflict in order to bring them peace, rationality, universal ethical and moral standards, a window to the XXI century and the possibility of becoming domesticated. The root of the problem are the "Satanic Verses" of the Qu'ran and prophet Mohammed's immoral, perverse, cruel, violent and discriminatory conduct which are the role models for millions of brainless Muslims. Unless there is A MASSIVE CONVERSION OF MUSLIMS TO CHRISTIANITY, or to any other religion except Islam, the same global Islamic madness and violence will never end.

Perhaps you were too young to remember that WWII was not, in fact, instigated by Christians. Hitler mostly just worshipped himself and Germany, though he could be said to be pagan. He did occasionally pander to Christians when he deemed it politically convenient to do so. Mussolini was an atheist. Hirohito was Shinto.

Dempsey is right, most Arabs have a better life in Israel than in their own countries. Israel has the highest average living standards in the Middle East. Israel's $100 billion economy is larger than all of its immediate neighbors combined.

The hallmark of a democratic society, however, is not that a minority ethnicity is better off than it would be in another country, but that it is as well off, in terms of rights and respectful treatment, as the majority ethnicity. Not to mention the people in Gaza and the Westbanks, regions, which are consdered Israel on every map I check and which are ultimately under Israeli control. These remarks by Dempsey are repulsive, as they imply discrimination is ok, as long as people are worse off somewhere esle. These words could come out of a Southern gentleman 150 years ago. They probably did.

Finnja, Israel does not discriminate against Arabs. Israel is THE refuge for Bahais, Druze, Christians in the Middle East. The valdictorians of the past two graduating classes from the Technion–Israel's MIT–have been Arab women! The commander of the prestigious Golani brigade is now Druze. The most successful Arab scientists and entrepreneurs in the world live in Israel. ONLY Israel gives them that chance. Not Arab countries. Not European countries, by the way. Women are FREE in Israel–Arab women are protected from tyrannical situations they find themselves in within every Arab country. Gays are free in Israel. Palestinian gays FLEE to Israel for their physical safety. As for the equality issue, it is culture, Finnja. One of the poorest groups in Israel–even poorer than most Arabs–are the ultra-religious Jews–because the men study instead of working. Finnja, you sound super ignorant–and unwilling to change your opinions with actual information. Guess you need to hate Israel in order to keep your current group of "progressive" ignorant hateful feel-good friends.

Okay I'm so sick and tired of Iranians being compared to Arabs...WE ARE NOT ARAB!!! We don't speak the language nor do we share the same culture....religion yes but not culture...it's like comparing the Portuguese to the Spanish or Italians....we unfortunately live in the same region but that's where the similarities end (I have nothing against Arabs at all, just pointing out a fact).

The real Iranians, in Iran and around the world, don't want war we want a free country to live peacefully and prosper like the rest of the world. No matter who strikes whom no one wins here. Look at Iraq….a great example….

In my opinion if the US really wants to do the world a favour then they would remove both Benjamin Netanyahu and Khamenei from power, as they are both wanted for crimes against humanity. Neither of them know the value of life or the meaning of peace.

Stop your hate comments towards Muslims, reading your comments makes me sick to my stomach to know that in this day and age we have such racists who are promoting hatred and bigotry...these comments lead to war and death of innocent people on all sides.....haven't Americans, Canadians, British and the rest endured enough death and debt caused by these wars? Enough is enough....

Are we to believe that Iran is a threat to the U,S, or a threat to Israel? To attack Israel who has hundreds of atomic weapons would be an act of suicide. They are not suicidal. Iran may be a economic or political threat to Israel but certainly not a military one. The only war they have been involved in was started by Iraq prior to that no war for 300 or more years.

I regret I must remind you that Iran is a strong supporter of various terrorist organizations, to include arming terrorists with sophisticated weapons. This is not only an Israeli and USA assessment, but the majority of countries in the EU have also come to this same conclusion.

The possibility of Iran providing nuclear weapons and/or nuclear technology to terrorists is real. It is the foundation to the argument that a nuclear-armed Iran is a grave threat to the world.

Yes, an Iranian attack on Israel would be suicide for Iran. Iran providing nuclear technology or weapons to terrorists would destabilize the region, and much of the world.

TPF, those who criticize Islam are no more racist than those who criticize Israel or the US, only less so, because Islam is not a race. Parsis and Bahais, two religious groups that originated in Iran, are peace-loving people. Secular–non-religious–Iranians who fled the Islamo-fascist revolution of 1979, are regular folks. Jewish Iranians are peaceful. However, radical Iranian Shiites are genocidal in their dreams, desires, plans, and rhetoric, and shame on you, TPF, for convincing me that even some non-radical Iranians are just their apologists and enablers.

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

"In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people."

If you're saying that America's military is the only country's military to shoot down a civilian aircraft, what about:
      – El Al Flight 402 shot down by Bulgarian MiG-15 fighters on July 27, 1955 killing 7 crew and 51 passengers
      – Libyan Airlines Flight 114 shot down by Isreali F-4 fighters on February 21, 1973 killing 108 out of 113
      – Korean Airlines Flight 902 shot down by USSR Su-15 fighters on April 20, 1978 killing only 2 out of 109
      – Korean Airlines Flight 007 shot down by USSR Su-15 fighter on September 1, 1983 killing all 269 passengers and crew

And there are more that were collateral damage due to existing warfare environments (please excuse my cold wording).

Okay Netanyahu, explain to me how your tactics are working. You call for more pressure on Iran while we finally get some dialog happening. Just before your own negotiations with the Palestinians were about to resume, you decided to "put on more pressure" by bull dozing more land. How did that work out? The Palestinian representatives finally all resigned! You really don't want any successful negotiations with anyone! Your "Russian heritage" is showing, very badly! Maybe you should give Putin a call. He seems to share your mindset!
Today we have a President who stands up to you and doesn't trust you. Obama can be criticized for many things; however, he doesn't swallow your line like our spineless Congress does! I support Obama's approach, not yours! Our Congress is disgusting. All members love your lobbying money more than they love America and what we stand for!
If you truly want to live in peace then learn to listen, forget all your "God given rights" which are totally irrelevant in today's world. Remember, your Israel of today was created by the UN and the UK, not by God! Europe desperately wanted someplace to to get rid of their Jews. You, yourself, are no native Israeli jew. Grow up and be happy with what you have. If the Arab world decides that enough is enough, where will you go next? Will you demand part of Africa where modern humans evolved from?
You need a lesson in humility, your big mouth and your tactics aren't working!
You have your US donated nuclear weapons (which you will never admit to, nor disclose). Why can't Iran have nuclear weapons to protect themselves from you? You are much more likely to attack Iran than Iran is to attack you!

Actually, it was the Isreali soldiers of 1948 led by General David “Mickey” Marcus of Brooklyn that actually laid down the boundries with their blood that defined the Isreal of today. The original UN and UK plan was to keep Isreal split into non-contiguous regions.

Universal Rule: Follow the money. Look at the recent patti-cake US has with the mentally disturbed Iran for their oil. Right, release the sanctions, ignore their vulgar threats, and let's make a sell-out-USA deal for the oil. Surely, that will help supply assets to Iran's Nuclear Plans?! What? They will do something about it-in partnership with its former nemesis Saudi Arabia. And by the way, the U.S. will be dragged into it, kicking and screaming.

Our military will stand by Israel. I can assure you of that. Heck, Eric Snowden probably said enough about it, as little as he knew or had access to! Our retirees would come back on duty if necessary, or volunteer to serve directly side by side with Israel in any capacity they were needed. Sit down and think for awhile. Just where did Israel get its nuclear weapons from? Family members here in the US most likely, with blessings from all. Prayers that they would NEVER need to use them, but to have them for safety reasons.

For Iran, as late as 1979 they were becoming close friends with the US. There are still lots of great people in that country. Unfortunately, they have a few people there that would make evil leaders of the 20th century look less evil in comparison.

Do not be surprised to see General Dempsey "quietly retire" in the next little while. To say that the U.S. would meet it's obligation to Israel, when the President is never likely to go to war for Israel nor anyone else in his present precarious and tentative political position. Distrust by allies. Domestic policy in shambles and "not trusted to tell the truth" by 53% of the American People. Who's kidding who here. Israel will either not go – (to war with Iran), or they will go "alone". Because this President will not now, nor has he ever intended to "fully" support Israel in this matter. He would rather see Israel taken off the map, than raise a finger to save them. It would make the solution of the Middle East Problem he inherited, a "final" solution. The worst kind. But one he would accept. It would all "just go away" without his having done a thing. Just like the previous "problems" he has faced.

The UN should immediately bar the US from having the power of veto over any condemnation and demands for sanctions against lsrael, because of conflict of interest with its errant ally. "U.S. would act if Israel strikes Iran"

Hey, who edited the headline? Isn't it supposed to say, "U.S. would act stupid if Israel strikes Iran"?

The basic message: US puppet states can shatter human rights, violate international law, and even launch unprovoked attacks against their neighbors (using U.S. made weapons). But wait, not only can they do it, but they have our blessing in advance and our assurance that if they bite off more than they can chew, we'll make sure nobody has a chance for payback. Go ahead Israel, do whatever you want. If our billions of tax dollars and the weapons we give you every year isn't enough to help you destabilize the region, we'll escalate the whole thing and send another ruin another another nation (but only the defenseless ones, we like slaughter, not war).

US Puppet sate? What did the US have to do with the administration and separation with Mandatory Palestine by the British in 1946? Once Israel declared herself a nation, she was attacked from all sides, and WON. There were no Americans there fighting, only the blood of Israelis. After 67 years and repeated attacks by her neighbors, Israel still exists. Israel had to defend herself from attacks from every bordering nation time and time again. Yet, it's a puppet state? That is so racist. Israel has to sit and wait for Iran to build a nuke while Iran calls for Israel's destruction of the map? If Mexico did that, would the US sit and wait? Your comments are foolish. Slaughter? You say slaughter? Laughable.

well, this is the type of one sided-ness that encourages Israel to continue to do destructive and illegal things in the region. If you want to go back to the time when Israel declared itself a state, the Israel lobby would do well to remember it was at the expense of people who happen to be living on the land that Israel "stole", under the cover of their version of the religious stories that they use to justify their insidious acts against other people. Just as the people who where on that land for hundreds of years use their version of the religious stories to justify their murderous response to the theft of their lands.

Yes there was a Kingdom of Israel thousands of years ago, inhabited by Arabs who had what we now refer to as Jewish religious beliefs.

Abraham was an Arab, Moses was an Arab, David, Solomon (and Goliath) and Jesus were all Arabs converting to the religions of the new Prophets, the descendants of the people of the Kingdom of Israel are the intrinsic population displaced by European colonists.

The original Hebrews were certainly not from Czehoslovakia, or Poland, or Russia, in fact the oldest record of the Hebrew religion was found in Iraq, which at that time was within the borders of the Egyptian empire.

The Israelis were able to turn their original home land from a desert into a thriving metropolis and successful farm lands despite being attacked by Muslims neighbors with Muslim support from all over the world. Not once but four times with Russia providing military aids and even pilots. To the anti Semites and losers out there too bad Israel is always ahead, in your face.

Be realistic. In the Middle East it is Israel that is with its back against the wall, not the other way round. The fact that Israel gave back the Sinai to Egypt after its peace with Egypt (remember the Sinai acted as a buffer during the 1973 war and prevented Israel from being overrun, thereby saving it) shows so very clearly that it is willing to sacrifice for the sake of REAL peace. It is for the same reason it cannot give up the Golan (he who controls the Golan controls entry to Northern Israel) since Syria was never willing to get involved in a serious peace with Israel. It takes two to tango

Dean, I usually don't drop so low as to call people names but you are an idiot. All of your comments reflect the fact that you truly know absolutely nothing about any of these related topics or this region. And oh, Hamas leadership probably sent family members to Israel for medical treatment most likely because the facilities in Gaza have been so badly destroyed by Israeli thugs (IDF) that there's not much left at this point, whereas the facilities in Israel are still in good shape. Since you seem to think that Israel is such a great friend to the U.S., perhaps you should look into the creation of Israel and how all of that came about. Maybe then you'll learn about how Jewish soldiers in the 1940's basically went village to village in present-day Israel and killed/raped Bedouins that they encountered until they all fled the area. Then, bingo, Israel had some space to found itself. The fact is, if Israel IS surrounded by states that intend it harm, maybe that's just karma and it'll get what it deserves. However, if Iran and other surrounding states were just left alone, I seriously doubt that there would be any aggression by any of those countries.

        Hey Danny,

Iran`s doing just fine, trade between Iran and China is growing at 70% p.a. China has just completed a $350 million extension of Tehran`s Underground system (bet you had no idea Iran had an underground transportation system!). and China has announced a further $1 billion contracts awarded by the Iranian Government (Guaranteed Parliament seats for Christian and Jewish Iranians, I bet that surprised you as well!).

You`ve seen TV footage of those "Iranian dissenters" but have you ever wondered why the signs they carry are in English? The predominant language in Iran is Farsi, so who are the audience the English posters are aimed at? It`s as strange as it would be if those Wall Street protesters held placards written in Russian to influence a Russian TV audience.

All this is academic thought, China (and Russia) support Iran and China gets 10% of her oil from Iran, Israel is no match for Iran without US help, and China has the US by the financial short and curlies, basically China rules because China has the money and the US er .......... is broke!

You should change your reading material from fiction to fact. Surely there would have been cases where Israelis have acted incorrectly (show me where in the world does this not occur) but you really need to start looking at facts . In the bigger scheme of things quite clearly and by an extremely wide margin the "thugs" you are talking about come from the other side. Forget your emotions and look at facts

Quite right Alex, Here are the facts.

Since Sept. 29 2000, 129 Israeli children have been killed by Palestinian actions, during that time 1,519 Palestinian Children have been killed by Israelis.

Since that time 1,104 adult Israelis have been killed by Palestinians, and 6,836 adult Palestinians have been killed by Israelis.

No Israelis are held prisoner without trial by Palestine, 5,007 Palestinians are held prisoner without trial by Israel.

No Israeli homes have been demolished by Palestine, over 27,000 Palestinian homes have been destroyed by Israel.

There are no Palestinian settlements on confiscated Israeli land, there are 260 Israeli settlements on confiscated West Bank land, linked by roads that can only be used by Jews.

Oy vey Alex that`s the way eh!

P.S. all approved by the US who also pay $$$$$$ billions in weapons and cash, and the good old US taxpayers love it, don`t they?.

Israel has no benefit whatsoever in striking Iran iwthout good reason...it would only make their situation in the ME and around the world 10 times as bad...but they obviously have far more "insight" that you do into Iran's intentions and are willing to do what is necessary for its people's survival.

I suspect that the Iranians are under no illusion that if they strike against the Israeli's that the US would render assistance to their main ally in the region. That being said I think it is insane that the US essentially has itself in a position where a tiny nation state (albeit it the only one in the region with nuclear arms even if they will not admit as much) is essentially dictating the foreign policy of a superpower with regard to the region.

Israel is only friendly to itself !

The only reason why Israel is cozy to the U.S. is because it receives $20 billion in US aid each year + $ billions more in weapons, munitions, technology, etc. etc. The Israeli economy is a direct function of support from the US taxpayer. Zionistic promotion of perpetual war in the Middle East supports Israel's hegemonic ambitions and selfish agenda as they continue to use the excuse of "existential threat" for more and more money, weapons and land concessions from their neighbors. When things get too tough, they get the U.S. to send young American lives into harm's way to fight for them. Greatest threat to world peace for the past 60+ years: Zionism and Israel.

If you received so much, you'd love the U.S. too.

Yes I did, the Arab Patriarchs claiming that Syria is Christian land and that Muslims are guests and not owners of Syria. So much for Arab nationalism, Zionism is a better model for that region, and for proof just look at Syria or Lebanon over the last 30 years, how divided they are, how they continue to kill each other, bomb each other, hate each other, talk about each other, legally discriminate, you name it.

Yes it is true that most of the Arabs living in Israel have a better life than the Arabs living in the rest of the region. Problem is getting them to admit that. One way to see this is the opportunity that some Arabs in border communities had a number of years ago of either retaining their Israeli citizenship or taking Palestinian citizenship. Was not a question for the vast majority of them.
Go check the facts for yourself. eg income per annum of Israeli Arabs vs other countries, academic degrees per capita, medical care/coverage etc.
