The House Intelligence chief emphatically told CNN's Candy Crowley on Sunday that the NSA's foreign intelligence gathering operations keep allies "safe."
Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Michigan, said on CNN's "State of the Union" that the vision being presented to the American public of a nation spying on its closest allies does not jibe with reality. According to Rogers, the U.S. counterterror operation abroad "keeps the French safe."
I am sure Rep. Mike Rogers would also agree if Commie China, Iran, or Russia would be found out to have done the same to USA that they are also just keeping the Americans safe, just the same way.
At last an honest TEA/GOP politician. He remembers that this was a Bush/Cheney program. NSA never told President Obama until 2013 when President Obama stopped it. I've said, we will be cleaning up Bush/Cheney's messes for the rest of most our lives. Where was the outrage when civil rights leaders were spied on? Where was the outrage when antiwar leaders were spied upon? Where was the outrage when Tricky Dick had his enemies list? Oh! I forgot. They were GOP presidents. Sweep the TEA/GOP traitors into history's garbage dump before they turn USA into a Talibangelical Iran.
Excellent posting, jboh. Thank you.
This Rep. Mike Rogers is nothing but a national disgrace and he needs to be voted out of office. There is not inasmuch as one word of truth in his outrageous statement the NSA has "kept Europe safe"! Europe has never been "in danger" since 1945 and is less so today!
I can't imagine why we would spy on the leaders of countries that have been the pipeline terrorists have used to get from MidEast to West for years? Didn't the 911 leader supposedly meet w/Saddam in Europe? TEA/GOP can't even keep their own lies straight anymore.
America's real enemy is Israel, folks. 🙂
True.
Mike Rogers: NSA spies on you to keep you safe. Fine, USA has been attacked by terrorists various times (9/11 etc) , I want USA to be safe as well: Lets spy on Obama's cell phone, and million of pvt citizens, so they can avoid more attacks from them. Stupid excuse: spying on million of citizen doesn't prevent at all any attacks from terrorist. Mike Rogers loves to insult the intellingence of Europeans. He sold that excuse to the americans and they bought it, now tries that with Europeans. We should just listen to his wife and to his cell phone calls, see if he likes that. Stupid donkey!
The French especially have no business complaining about US surveillance of the terrorists living in France. France engages in spying against the US, particularly industrial spying by their government, and then sells their advanced technologies to the Chinese who will use them against us. China would not have any helicopter industry to speak of were it not for Aerospatiale (now Eurocopter) building that industry for them. If you look at the WZ10 attack helicopter you will see a lot of technology lifted from the Franco/German Tiger attack helicopter and a rotor system taken from the latest version of the big Super Puma transport helicopter. The Chinese navy uses a 100 mm naval gun based on a French design sold to them and their naval architecture owes much to heavy French assistance in their navy's development. I could go on but you get the point. We have some good reasons to spy on France. They do what they think is good for France, and are not necessarily concerned about how that affects us.
Dear Mr Tortoise, OK if that's the way is got to be played then fine but don't pretend that we are allies and friends, I would be inclined to have the same restrictions placed on US companies as Europe places on Chinese companies as the same national security concerns seem to apply. I am increasingly thankful that the US empire is on the wane I always felt that the US was a force for good in the world but no more. I would encourage the US to become more insular and leave the world to the county's that can act like adults.
Well said, Tattiesque. Thank you.
What the French do with their technology is their business, just as what and who we chose to share or sell our technology to. The French have enough technical expertise to design their own weapons and do not need to steal from us. (Not saying they don't because they do)
In terms of economic spying, the European countries we are spying on are "already" providing us with intel on terrorists in their country. Whether they have done enough is up for debate, but the tapping of the G8 and G20 as well as those of private conversations of governmental officials is done for economic and not security reasons.
Trade officials from the U.S. have already acknowledged this when confronted.
I think that you are confusing France with Apartheid Israel. Remember the rat Pollard? 🙂
What utter rubbish : "The Europeans should be happy that we're pervasively spying on them, and Angela Merkel should be overjoyed that the NSA is listening in to her supposedly private cell phone conversations". American (read : "Republican") arrogance on this matter is breathtaking - but be warned, my American friends... it ain't business as usual, any more. Europe is ENRAGED at these tactics and it IS going to fix the problem, with the cooperation of "God's Chosen Country" or not.
