Official: US military updates options for possible strikes on Syria

By Chris Lawrence
CNN Pentagon Correspondent

The U.S. military has updated options for a forceful intervention in Syria to give President Barack Obama a range of choices should he decide to deepen American involvement in a civil war where new claims surfaced this week about possible chemical weapons use by the regime.

A senior Defense Department official told CNN on Friday that target lists for possible air strikes have been updated. The planning also included updates on the potential use of cruise missiles, which would not require fighter pilots to enter Syrian airspace.

But the official cautioned the steps were taken "to give the president a current and comprehensive range of choices" and that no decisions were made at a national security meeting on Thursday at the White House.

The official said there are certain static targets, like government buildings and military installations, but that forces and equipment of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "continue to move" and thus require flexibility in planning.

This is not about right wing or left wing; this is about propping up the dollar currency that is ready to collapse. How do you do that, invade oil rich countries and force them to trade their oil in dollars only! Iraq had set up a deal with the EU to trade their oil in the Euro right before the United States of America invaded; now Iraq oil is traded using only the dollar! Our corrupt puppets who are controlled by their banker handlers are trying to avoid the inevitable; the full collapse of the dollar. You don't believe me, look up the term petro-dollar and see for yourselves.

WHAT ARE WE DOING??? Why is our gov. and military broadcasting plans to send cruise missiles into Syria? Isn't this kind of operation "supposed" to be TOP SECRET? Something else going on here! But, what is it? Whatever the "real" plan is should not be blasted all over the media! Possibly, the cruise missile idea is being revealed simply to gauge reactions from Russia, Iran and the US public! If this IS our real plan, Assad is being offered an opportunity to move gas weapons into target sites well ahead of any strike. Then the US can be blamed for causing nerve gas releases!
"Loose lips sink ships"! Still true today!
Something else is really being planned! This is simply a diversion! At least I hope so!

What is being planned Stan, is that the right-wing thugs in Washington want to take over Syria by proxy, that is, through these self-styled "liberators" called the SFA. The only problem is, is that these thugs are starting to lose this war so the thugs in Washington need to attack the Assad regime directly in order to tip the balance once more in their favor. Let's all hope that this obscene plan fails!

Why on earth do we want to take over Syria? We would screw it up! "Back in the days", the British knew how to do this. When you take over a country, you need to rule it as a colony for decades. Install governors, establish the rule of law while maintaining police of the people. Extract all the resources you can to pay for it. Provide education and prepare the people for what is to follow. Our plans have failed over and over. We think elections solve everything! WRONG!

Stan these announcements are products of genius mind of military planners. They like to see who is moving what when they announce air strikes.

Time for the United States to step down and quit trying to control every human being on this planet... especially its own. This is no longer a Democratic Republic, it is an imperialist war machine and we are all sacrificed on its altar.

I agree! We have no idea what we are doing in the ME, it's a different culture and certainly unprepared for "democratic rule". Before "democracy" can be considered, first everyone must understand and accept that the laws of the government simply cannot be ignored. Laws must be enforced by courts and judges are free from "influence". Just finding a judge is a challenge! Better for these people to be ruled by dictators. They have much to learn, and this will take decades!
Simply holding elections does not create a democratic society, as we should now know very well!

We have a perfectly good war happening in Afghanistan. We won't need another one until maybe election season. Yes I know our noble politicians are under a lot of pressure from Saudi Arabia and other premium campaign contributors... but our domestic war mongers and arms dealers should be happy with the US government just giving their stuff's paid for, why should they care?

USA is a joke its economically and technologically inferior soon USA, Britain, Australia, Ireland Dublin, Norway Oslo, ghana accra and Israel are all going to get nuked sky high 1 megaton nuclear warhead and its all game over.

first off, 1 megaton will do virtually nothing. You would need about 3 thousand of them to have any impact.
Second while you islamist have been working for 25 years to make a nuke we havent been sleeping. We have neutron bombs. Much much more effective than nukes. If you ever move to open all out war you will be slaughtered in record time.

Neutron bomb is nothing more but a product of imagination of mentally impaired mind of theoretical physisist Samuel Cohen. Essentually a tamperless device where the efficiency is deliberately sacrificed by letting it disintegrate prematurely so the neutrons which in normal design would participate in supporting chain reaction are escaping out. This idea was never been considered seriously by the military who iniformy agree that the only value of weapon is its explosive yield - blsast wave, while everything else (radiation, contamination, etc) is undesirable collateral effects.

Only one option......stay out of it!!!!! Let Assad defend his county against the terrorist the way he thinks is best for his nation not ours. Not to mention more then likely the terrorist used the gas and blamed the army to draw others into a battle they can't win on their own.

agree. It is impossible to know who did what there for all we can do is sit back and do nothing. If we could prove who did it we should invade and wipe out that entire side. Since we cant , all we can do is a pc war , and we all know how those work out.

The Syrian Civil War is just one big epic global mess really. On one hand you have Assad, a brutal dictator with a history of oppression, and basically the nut that started this whole mess by opening fire on his people. Plus now Assad has Hezbollah and the Iranians in on his side. On the other hand you have the rebels that started out with a valiant enough cause, but are now infiltrated by foreign jihadis from every corner of the muslim world fighting to take power for themselves.

The real problem that is of the World's concern here is the chemical weapons and their use so far in this bloody mess of a civil war. Obviously Assad has all ready used them and has indicated he will probably continue to use them. On the other hand even if Assad falls; is it really a good idea to let hardened and angry jihadis take possession of the WMD stockpile? The US and the World should not intervene on either side of this war, but the UN ought to go in and take possession and remove the WMD stockpile since the use of chemical weapons is a humanitarian and international issue that transcends just Syria. Then again in the diplomatic world Russia and China won't sign on with that plan, so I guess we will just continue to sit back and watch as the Syrian Whirlwind of Violence escalates and grows more unpredictable and dangerous by the day. There is no easy answers for Syria and it won't be over anytime soon. The best course for America is to mitigate its risk and losses and try to stay as far from the storm as possible.

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

No imperialist country can survive, they all collapse from the expense of trying to control everything and everyone around them... especially their own citizens. The United States' promise was as a Democratic Republic, not as an imperialist nation. We will fall because of the arrogance and expense of this behavior. We got too big for our britches after WWII and are collapsing now.

I disagree with you .We are a Republic period. We didn't get too big for a britches. Politicians sold us out to big business. Politicians blindly following big business and the Military industrial complex to fulfill their own egos and greed for money and power which has lead to a verge of collapse. We need to come together as a people and change the leadership in this country. I mean all of it. To make such changes would make it rough on all of us, yet we need to start with our pocket books.

No surprise here. As to be expected, the right-wing nut jobs in the military can hardly wait to get us into another war so they can kill more people!!! No wonder they call ours a sick society!!! This is most sickening to say the least.
