Official: U.S. temporarily holds up some military aid to Egypt

The Obama administration is withholding some military aid to Egypt as it reviews how it wants to proceed, a U.S. official told CNN.
The move is being described as a "reprogramming" of some funds to Egypt, but in effect, Washington is temporarily holding up some military aid to that country as it prepares for the possibility that future aid could be cut, the official said.
A spokesman for Sen. Patrick Leahy, David Carle, confirmed to CNN Monday that his office has been told the aid has been halted. Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, is chairman of the Appropriations State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee.
The United States gives about $1.23 billion in military aid to Egypt.

I made a big post a while back saying how to beat the strategy at play here. An egyptian has materialized my thoughts perfectly. He doesnt like the military rule, but doesnt like morsi or mbh either. So rather than rioting and getting killed he bangs on pots on his balcony every night at 9 .
I support these egyptians. Egypt is not even close to a lost cause yet. Hopefully the military can hold it together till enough egyptians catch on to this guys efforts.
Perhaps it is time to call the interwebs to action to provide infrastructure so that message, that TYPE of protest , can proliferate across egypt. I don't see what harm can come of empowering him / people who choose his form of protest.

This is a good move by the Obama Administration.
Understand that we have not cut off aid to Egypt, but merely stalled the rest of the aid that has not been doled out this year. This gives America "flexibility" as is stated in the full version of the article. America will still be paying Egypt, make no mistake about that. However the current Pay Freeze gives us a much needed moment of pause to review just how much and what type of aid we should be giving to Egypt. It also buys some time to allow the Egyptain military to try to bring back stability to Egypt without America getting tainted in that process.
I think we should cut some of that money, and perhaps we will now that we have a moment of pause to observe the situation objectively. However simply cutting money isn't going to be any solution. The other upside to the Egypt Pay Freeze is that it gives the forces that are bent on spending money a chance to find ways in which we can give Egypt legit humanitarian aid and not let weapons of war fall into hands that will turn them on their own people and our people.
You are correct. You can be be someone's ally and not give them billions. You can be someone's ally and not provide free security and liberation services. You can make it very clear that if anyone messes with our ally, and our ally asks for our help, we will be there. It won't be free, ;but you get what you pay for. It's time for the US to stop being the Middle Eastern Sugar Daddy to the generals and dictators, and start making logical decisions with US Taxpayer dollars relating to overseas aid. The only one that will be losing by cutting off aid is the USA. You may pay Egypt 1.23 billion dollars but Egypt pays more than double that to run the equipment. All the American contractors that work on these military equipment will be out of work and it will further bring down the American economy.
Americans are the only ones that will suffer by cutting off aid. As for Egypt, Egyptians get most of their aid now from the UAE and Saudi Arabia (1.23 billion is NOTHING compared to what they are getting from these rich oil countries). On top of that, Russia will be more than happy to step in and provide all the necessary military aid that Egypt needs. Egypt has nothing to lose.
Once the USA gets rid of the aid, they will no longer have any say about anything that happens in Egypt (not that America should in the first place) and the peace treaty with Israel will be in the garbage. So, it's probably the stupidest thing the USA could do is cut off aid but either way it's a lose lose situation for Americans. I feel bad for you...
The Obama administration messed up pretty badly and now Americans are paying the price. Americans should be furious with their stupid government and their inability to think or solve any problems.
Oh and on top of that history will show that the USA was happily providing military aid to criminals and dictators (including Morsi and Hosni Mubarak) and once Egypt started getting it right by fighting terrorism they stop aid. What does that tell you about America???
Oh and the reason USA is cutting off aid is because Egypt is free, i.e. the USA no longer has control over what happens in Egypt. The people running Egypt are actually patriotic to their own country, Egypt! This is a scary thought for America because they are used to being able to control the dictators, who were mostly American puppets. The moral of the story, USA only provides aid when the person in power is a puppet to the USA.
The Egyptian interim government and the Egyptian military is fighting terrorism. The Egyptian military put the brother of Al Zawahry in jail. Al Zawahry is the current Al Qaeda leader and the master mind behind the killing of innocent Americans on 9/11l! You would think that Americans and the USA would be happy and support Egypt towards their noble fight against terrorism but they are not! How ironic!!
Americans should now that what Egypt is doing now will not only benefit Egypt but will also ensure American safety and security. Putting terrorists in jail where they belong is the right thing to do. However, the American government are saying they don't support the government or the Egyptian military!!
If Americans were properly educated and received proper media coverage on the truth in Egypt, then you would realize how corrupt your government is and you would impeach Obama. I feel sorry for Americans, they always fall victims of their media's propaganda. Americans should go out and try to educate themselves and get out of the bubble they live in. Good luck...
On and there is more at stake: don't forget that not only is Egypt the largest and probably the most influential country in the Middle East but Egypt also has control over the Suez Canal. Yup, America is certainly the loser here. Egyptians and Egypt will not take lightly this decision and you better believe that it will impact the average American very negatively. What a shame what the USA has come to... Really a huge shame. The USA was once a great country but it seems it is spiraling downward. 🙁

I don't wish anything bad to Americans! I just want you to wake up and look around you. You will notice that the world has a different view than America. Try to be open minded and learn about the world you live in to better understand how to deal with it. Sorry to break it to you but I am not the one that lives in a hole; apparently you do... If you read what I wrote, it makes sense but you simply don't want to believe it. Unfortunately, most Americans don't try to think through these things. Believe it or not, your foreign policy impacts your internal affairs. This is a shocker to most average Americans. Sad but true!
Egypt can be a strong and good ally to America only if America tries to respect Egypt as a strong and independent nation. That seems to be an on-going challenge here. It seems that the USA does not want any country to be independent and strong because that means America can no longer have control. It's the wrong mentality. The sooner Americans realize that, the sooner they can go back to building their country again.

Here's a novel concept, when the country went into sequestration, and implenmented all of these emergency budget cuts, why wasn't all foreign aid cut off then. Between Egypt, Jordan, and Israel just think of how many billions with a B would have been saved. The US shouldn't be propping up other governments and regiems when our own infrastructure is suffering for it. What happened to the concept of America 1st, then help others as we are able? We have gotten so backwards thinking that America's strength is based on how we help others and forgotten that America's Real Strength was our prosperity and Independence from other nations. Shame on us for allowing it to continue.

Soon it will be China dictating world policy. China is rapidly consuming world wide resources and has never set one soldier on the ground! What happens when China learns that bribes and covert policy no longer works? China has taken the worst of our capitalist system and employed it world wide. This won't last. Sooner or later, Chinese troops will be required to insure their access to resources. Then what?
This is a first ,cutting aid to Egypt and we'll see the consequences shortly because Egypt relies heavily in our aid mostly military to support their cause...Morsy was supposidly being released from prison to help put a halt to the turmoil and that might just be the right thing for the moment to do..It's time we stood back and after cutting aid see how they handle this situation because we've been aiding Egypt and others in the middle east for over 30 and I believe its 30 years too long !!
I agree, Pete. We have been pouring out aid to Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries for far too long! Let the Germans take care of Egypt for a change. Moreover, let them move into Egypt and sort things out over there since they have been such loyal allies of ours!!!
I am the newer version of GP, and I have no downward compatibility with my older version. We have to fund these wars in ME till the last man is standing !!! It's not easy to extinguish sectarian wildfires in muslim world, so we might as well add fuel to the fire and speed up the process. Let's hope in next 50 years, the ME would be free from muslim wars, and their countries would be run by our installed democratic governments.
This is the wrong thing to do. I like many americans got angry my taxes went there, but after much thought, When the military (backed by most egyptians that wouldnt kill me) was in power I could safely travel to egypt. While the MBH was in power I couldn't. I see egypt being effective. More so than we have in the past years. I really think if we just sit back and support the military there, the resolution will be tolerable for everyone.
