Source: al Qaeda leader urged affiliate to 'do something'

By Barbara Starr

A message from al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri to his second in command in Yemen told him to "do something," causing U.S. and Yemeni officials to fear imminent terrorist action, CNN has learned.

For weeks, U.S. and Yemeni officials watched a rising stream of intelligence about the possibility of a major terrorist attack in Yemen but grew increasingly alarmed after intercepting a message within the past several days said to be from al-Zawahiri, who is believed to be in Pakistan. The message was sent to Nasir al-Wuhayshi, the leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the terror group's Yemeni affiliate. U.S. intelligence believes al-Wuhayshi has recently been appointed the overall terror organization's No. 2 leader.

U.S. officials cautioned that there may be multiple sources of intelligence including intercepts of electronic information from phone calls, web postings, but also interrogation of couriers or other operatives.

CNN had the information over the weekend and decided not to report the details about al-Zawahiri's involvement based on U.S. government concerns about the sensitivity of the information. Now that it has been widely reported in other media, including the New York Times and McClatchy, CNN has now decided to report it as well.

The United States has heightened its security stance by issuing a worldwide travel alert and closing a number of embassies and consulates over a large area of the Middle East and Africa this week.

The White House said the substantial security steps reflect an "abundance of caution" over intelligence information that indicated final planning by al Qaeda in Yemen for possible terrorist attacks on Western targets to coincide with the end of Ramadan this week.

The intercepted message further intensified concerns already heightened by increased terrorist chatter detected by intelligence agencies, as well as a series of prison breaks that freed al Qaeda figures.

A senior official with Iraq's interior ministry told CNN on condition of not being identified that top officials of al Qaeda in Iraq, including Adnan Ismail Najim Abdullah al-Dulaimi, escaped from Abu Ghraib prison during a jailbreak there last month and remain at large.

Yemen is an area of particular concern.

Three sources said the United States has information that members of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula are in the final stages of planning for an unspecified attack.

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Monday that U.S. anti-terrorism efforts had decimated al Qaeda's global leadership and greatly diminished its core in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. But the threat still posed "has shifted to some of these affiliates, in particular AQAP."

Over the weekend, Interpol warned that al Qaeda has been tied to the prison breaks on July 23 in Iraq, on July 26 in Libya and four days later in Pakistan.

Separately, American special forces units overseas have been on alert for the past several days for a mission to attack potential al Qaeda targets if those behind the most recent terror threats against U.S. interests can be identified, a senior Obama administration official told CNN.

The official declined to identify the units or their locations because of the sensitive nature of the information.

The units, along with several others, were put on heightened alert by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel last week.

You are conveniently ignoring the attacks on U.S. embassies and the U.S. Cole during Clinton's administration. The Islamic terrorists have been targeting American interests long before Bush II. I recommend you put your hate of Bush aside and learn some history.

"Do something" ... sounds like a rant from a boss who's fed up with the inaction of an underling.

Of course, it's not as if the boss is actually doing any work himself. if Zawahiri isn't careful, his underlings may turn him in just to get him off their backs.

Now that would be celebrated by people everywhere who can't stand their demanding – and lazy – bosses.

I have not read the Koran, but i am really worried about the violence in Islam! A Hindu once said even if all of us were to become Muslim there would be no end to conflict in the world. There seems to be no natural love, peace, and freedom amongst Muslims! Countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran which appear stable are an unsustainable illusion because they rule over their People using fear inspiring tactics. I heard one S/Arabian guy tell about how they make them watch sword executions after prayers. That is not Love, that is not religion, and it ain't peace!!! It is not from the arch angel Gabriel!
Shiites and Sunnis call each other false/harem, fight and murder each other viciously in the Middle East. It appears Muslim teachers and Leaders do not reprimand murderous satanic al-qaeda and Taliban accordingly, which reminds me how rascism was subtley encouraged in the formative years of the USA so as to make it easier to control the masses. DOES ALLAH ENCOURAGE MURDER OF THE INNOCENTS BY ANYONE(USA. S/ARABIA, UK, al-qaeda and Taliban OR ANYONE)? THE ANSWER IS A BIG NOOOO!!!

Christians continue to kill to this day. Take the Wisconsin Sikh Temple massacre last year. Or how about The Knoxville Unitarian Universalist Church shooting in 2008. Then there was the murder of Dr. Tiller. We could go on and on. Christians will argue – and rightfully so – that this is the work of a few deranged heretics. Muslims could argue – rightfully so – the same thing.

        August 6, 2013 at 9:54 am |
      • TiredOfPaying

Christians have not even come close to the number of deaths caused by Islam. Besides the Crusades, what war was fought in the name of Christ? But, for a moment, let's say that I accept your premise. What will it take for Mulsims to stop killing in the name of their 'religion'? Will you stop when you pass the total killed by Christians? How about after killing all Jews? After killing all Shiites or Sunni's?

Yeah... that's what I thought. Since there is no end to the killing as long as there are Muslims, its pretty obvious who needs killing.

George Bush and Condi Rice COMPLETELY IGNORE intelligence about an imminent attack, and we get 9/11 and two wars following. Bush gets a cool leather jacket and a library. Like many leftist who conveniently "blame" the GWB admin., the issue of terrorism , esp. surrounding Al Qaeda, was in Clinton's hands since his first inauguration. You think 12 month into Bush's tenure, and all of a sudden there's a terrorist threat? Clinton knew about all of this well before GW could even spell Al Qaeda, FACT – he had Bin Laden in his sights, literally, back in 1997 and did nothing....Look it up. JJ – You're an idiot. The President didn't turn down additional security. Facts are the the State Department has requested for three years in a row for additional funding for security because of increased threats. These requests were included in the President budget request to Congress, which the republican controlled House, who controls the budget, refused each and every year. So if you want to blame someone and hold them accountable for this tragedy, why don't you place the blame where it deserves, on the republicans in the House of Representatives. Please check your facts before you look stupid by making false and inaccurate claims.

mehohman- you're the idiot. Everyone now knows that the Benghazi attack lasted for hours and that help could have been sent to arrive in 20 mins. Requests for help were ignored and the Obama administration led by Hillary "what difference does it make" Clinton, lied to the world and said the Sept 11 attack was caused by a YouTube video and not a planned terrorist attack in order to not hurt Obama's reelection bid a few weeks later. It could have been stopped.

LOL – Another GOP supporter rewriting history, GWB did indeed say he was giving up golf after a citizen questioned him on how he was sacrificing since the soldiers were sacrificing their lives to fight his war. So he didn't stop playing golf on his own but because he looked like a fool talking about sacrifice when he was out playing golf during wartime. Unfortunately, "his sacrifice only lasted a week or so because he was caught playing golf after his PR stunt. Where was GWB a month before 9/11, he was on his ranch in Texas where he spent a considerable amount of time during his administration. History has already shown that GWB spent more vacation time then any president. So before you talk about be a stooge for the democrats perhaps you should turn off Fox and research the facts.

GWB never gave a crap about American soldiers because if he did he would have never sent them to Iraq, held their pay and told the military (through Rumsfield) that this is the Army you have and shut up about asking for armored protection.

...Or, it "could" have something to do with the fact that certain politicians of a certain political party decided to politicize the Benghazi embassy attack and milk it for everything they could, ensuring that any government in power will now have to "over-react" to any potential incident.

By the way, there were more embassy attacks and deaths under GWB's presidency than "Obozos". Don't believe me? Look it up.

Yes, there were more embassies attacked under Bush. THat is because WE WERE AT WAR WITH TERRORISTS!

But according to Obama, the war is pretty much over, we have won and Al Qaeda is decimated (his and Biden's words, not mine).

So exactly why are we shutting down a record number of embassies again? See, I agree with the shutting down of the embassies, just like we should have supported and closed Benghazi consulate. Because we should still be at war with the terrorists and it is VERY OBVIOUS that Al Qaeda is ALIVE AND WELL!

I'm guessing that you have ragged on President Obama about Benghazi. So now when steps are taken to protect U.S. embassies you're complaining, too. Which way do you want it? Of course, you just type on a computer and, I'm sure, have no responsibilities so it's easy to complain. Drones killed four militants in Yemen. What else do you think we should do? Nuke Sana'a? (That's the capital of Yemen.)

For most people I know, we do not really care so much about the closures as opposed to where in Bengazi we did not send in additional troops either before the attack or during there was actual shooting. That was the big deal.. no one is asking for closures. Lol

Ultimately as we evolve so does our government, checks and balances dont really apply. because the rules set by the previous legislator/executor will either be strengthened or destroyed (leading to even more laws being made)

      • Say what ?

No, we blame him because the Benghazi embassy ASKED for more security and the request was ignored, and if they could not supply security, then they should have pulled them out, and again, they were ignored. It's good he closed the ones down this week, his hindsight is a perfect 20/20.

        August 6, 2013 at 8:04 am |
      • Scott

No one is blaming Obama for the attacks. Many of us do blame his administration for their lack of support and lack of response. And many certainly blame him for covering up much of it since it was right at election time and it went against his mantra of the war is over, we won, AQ is decimated, etc.

I agree with the closings. My question is, why didnt they do the same in Benghazi when there was a credible threat?

Yes I am using humor a bit to get my point across but my point is that the News HAS TO MAKE EVERYTHING AS BIG AND BAD AS POSSIBLE. A guy won the lottery and what does the press do? they run a story on how he was behind on his child support. They spun it into him being a deadbeat dad when in fact he was laid off doing his best. It blows my mind how many of you clearly lack any type of critical thinking skills or basic analytic abilities. You really think that the entire message was "do something?" You REALLY think that CNN has access to ALL the intelligence gathered? Months of information and data have been monitored. The only information released to CNN was that short snippet. If nothing was done and an attack happened you'd be freaking out too even if CNN reported that the same message was received. Get over yourselves.

Thank you for pointing all that out but they'll just ignore it. Just as they ignore how many people were killed in embassy attacks before Obama even considered running for president. I guess it's bad if it happens when he is in office but ok if it happens when someone else is in office.

        August 6, 2013 at 2:29 am |
      • david

Yes liberal groups. Any group that had "progressive" in the name, this was also a CNN story. Also the Obama administration did reduce the NSA spying from a computer program that filtered through every word of a conversation to one that just looks at who a person called and for how long they talked. The prior was a system that was set up under the Bush administration. By the way the command I was on when I was in the NAVY, Dec 01 to Dec 06 used the same system to filter e-mails.

Of course it is a diversion, it wasn't going to take long for them to try to justify NSA and PRISM and the fact that our representatives can't even get basic information about these programs. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain! If you want real news information go to the UK site The Guardian, Our media is very tainted and barely touches on these very real issues. The "war on terror" is the campaign of fear brought to you by the U.S. government and sponsored by mainstream media. It is as if they stole the plot from "1984" and it is being played out for real. unfortunately most of America is asleep about this.

Thats not even counting here in the u.s. through simply bad policies, wasting of tax dollars, and general corruption including the violation of my rights under the guise of the Patriot Act. Smart phones are a million times more dangerous than al Oaeda is today. (Car crashes.)
This whole scare story, is cooked up by Washington and their Wall Street puppet masters, to divert attention from the NSA scandal, and to keep the girl scout portion of Americans, who are all paranoid about getting their soft little existence, disturbed, to passively continue to let the military/industrial/intelligence complex spend an ever increasing amount of money on hyper expensive, virtually useless, no public bid, digital spy equipment.
They are hoping Benghazi goes away too, because something really shocking about one of our 'friends' is being hidden inside that story. The complete story is far more substantial than bureaucratic or military inefficiency. Even the Republicans are helping to hide something BIG about Benghazi. You've got to figure that many billions of dollars would be at risk, if they ever actually revealed the whole truth to the public. It might be very financially damaging to reveal whoever organized or funded the attack.

And if Obama or Hillary did call off a rescue mission (doubtful), the reason they did it, could have been to save a lot of very rich people a lot of money. Or it might have been to save us ALL a lot of money? Or the cover up may be to avoid taking a major step toward WW III? Major world powers sacrifice people all the time. "For the greater good", The lesser of two evils", that kind of stuff.
The truth might be revealed in 50 years.

Yes, leaders sometimes make decisions that cost people their lives even though they can prevent it. In WWII, Churchill knew that the Germans were going to bomb a city because the British had broken their codes. If he evacuated the city then the Germans would know their codes were broken. If he didn't, then hundreds of British would die ... but the reading of the German codes could continue. The video of Churchill touring the bombed city, and the haunting look on Churchill's face as he saw what he could have prevented, is fresh in my mind today.

That being said, Benghazi was NOT such a situation. If the administration truly hung those people out to dry then I would support their impeachment/prosecution. I won't, however, dignify their failure with some sort of conspiricy.

Absloutly correct Mario and further more these criminals in office will use this to try and justify the illegal violation of our right by the NSA's spying on American citizens and if they really want to go for the gold they will stage another false flag terror attack probably with the shoulder launch heat seaking missiles they got out of the warehouse behind the Benghazi embassy on 9/11/12 so that our criminal government led by our criminal president who is really just a corporate puppet can use it as an excuse to take first our guns then the rest of our rights just like Hitler did and Stalin and Mao and Pol Pot and Castro and many other tyrants over the years its really sad how history is repeating it self as it does over and over again and the sheeple never seem to learn from it.

Yep an entire army of uneducated, over inflated egocentric morons with the power to really screw up the general public's travel day. I'd rather they fire them all and double the number of air marshals.

As long as Americans remain indifferent and neglect to hold their government accountable for what is done
in their name, terrorism will continue to thrive.

Yes, we really should insist our government be more proactive and kill 'em all before they get the chance to become terrorists.

The mightiest slap to the face and also the biggest psychological reversal to Zawahiri's propaganda is the demonstrations by Egyptians against Muslim Brotherhood. It will take a long time for him to recover from this.

I'm surprised that more emphasis on this point hasn't happened yet. Radical Islam actually had control of a major country – achieved by non-military means – and was allowed to openly govern under Islamic law. The result was that the People of Egypt UTTERLY REJECTED AND REMOVED THEM. The Egyptians are mostly Muslim, yet they rejected Radical Islam. They are poor, yet they rejected Radical Islam. They suffered under a dictatorship, were tortured, felt oppressed by the US-supported Mubarik – yet they rejected Radical Islam. They saw Infidels such as the Coptic Christians being oppressed and rejected that too. Even the women stood up against Sharia law.

You have no idea how PROUD I am of the Egyptian people! They allowed Radical Islam to show its ugly face, then they peacefully protested and removed it all by themselves! I hope that their example is followed by ALL Muslim nations as the only true solution to Terrorism is for the Muslims to clean their own house!

This is where US policymakers can take a page or two from the operation manual of Sri Lankans. The Tamil terrorists, funded by the all TTD (Tamil Terrorist Diaspora) were evaporated in a classic operation, while rescuing 350,000 civilians taken hostage by the terrorists.

(Do not underestimate the power once wielded by the Tamil terrorists, who were ranked by the FBI as the deadliest terrorists ever to walk on the earth, and terrorized the Sri Lankans for over 30 years.)

However, the funny part is... those who funded the Tamil terrorists tactfully teamed up with some western hawks, are now calling for 'accountability' by the Sri Lankans, claiming that those who were decimated were 'innocent civilians'!

Neocons and the middle eastern "royals" put on their thrones by the British Empire want the "war on terror" to be revived. More excuses for war, more excuses to look the other way while billions avoid taxation, more excuses to prioritize assets away from white collar crime and drug money funding "covert operations" More excuses to to lock everyone down in a police surveilliance state. More excuses to jail "traitors" who blow the whistle on war crimes and more crimes. More excuses to keep the bribery and corruption going.
My intuition tells me the shadow rogue intel traitors orchestrated the "jailbreaks" for the benefit of all the criminal "aristocrats" with the above interests. And now, just like they did before, they circulate reports about the "imminent attack" coming on orders from some guy who just can't be found while the NSA is collecting every word uttered on planet earth.
Same protection racket gangsters, different decade.

Sadly, it would seem America needs to get hit again, only much harder.

America's dangerously uninformed electorate is oblivious to the threat

created by a relatively small group of elected and non elected government

beauracrates who have adulterated American foreign policy to the detriment

of her citizens. Half the population thinks the muslim world hate America because

of relative wealth and how we live. NOTHING could be further from the truth.

Many muslims hate America because American politicians, the State Department, CIA, etc.

are meddling in the affairs of muslim countries. Take a look at the Middle East, most of the

dictators were put in power by the U.S.A. This was done in your name.

Open your eyes, you are being deceived by your government. Muslims want the same things you want

in life ... a job, good medical care, a home and safe playgrounds for their kids.

America and many other Western countries created many of what we call radical islamists. We call them terrorists,

you would probably be called a terrorist too if a foreign country was doing what our politicians are doing in their

    countries.

Open your eyes America, the true threat to your country, family and friends lives in Washington, D.C.
