U.S. may end drone strikes in Pakistan

The US is looking to end drone strikes in Pakistan, Secretary of State John Kerry said Thursday. Kerry told a Pakistani television station that President Barack Obama has "very real timeline".

"We hope it's going to be very very soon," according to a transcript of the interview provided by the State Department.

"I believe that we're on a good track. I think the program will end as we have eliminated most of the threat and continue to eliminate it," Kerry said. He added that the cessation depends on "a number of factors" and the US is working with the Pakistani government.

After ramping up strikes in the tribal region in the first few years of Obama's presidency, the number of drone strikes in Pakistan has dropped significantly, in part due to the deterioration of al Qaeda in the country and more focus on threats from al Qaeda groups in other countries like Yemen.

I wouldn't end anything until the Pakistani government gets their act together and picks a side. Al-Zawahiri is not dead we must asume he is still alive.

Keep killing these Jhihadist maggots until they are gone. Tactical nukes in the tribal regions wouldn't bother me a bit.

Good grief, another joker here trying to be funny! You know better than that, pyusmc66. Besides, don't you think that we Americans have already given ourselves a bad name by the use of those ungodly drones and Apache helicopters? Well, you should!

good, replace them with b-52s and try to make a difference, the tribal region can't be that big, what? 200 sorties, packages of 50 planes a sortie, shouldn.t take too long to quiet the place down eh?

Gee, this would be great news if it was to come true!!! These cursed strikes need to end if for nothing other than the sake of humanity. Besides, we Americans have already given ourselves a terrible name around the world first by being the only country to use the atom bomb, biological warfare in Korea, napalm in Vietnam and now these cursed drone strikes but yet, we convicted Germans right after WW2 for doing less!!!

The purpose of using drones are to avoid the use of troops and still maintain its mission. Yes I agree the drone program have getting out of hand but the root cause are the people who controls the program, ie committes, generals, etc...If it is not drones then man power. War is and are always a tool for a political end, regardless what tool we use. As for the atom bomb comment. Since the development of the atom bomb and weapons of mass destruction, we have not had a major war to the extent of the world wars because of it. If we did not use it first, the first country who developed the technology would have. But we have not used it since and now weapons of mass destruction are weapons of deterance rather than its intended purpose. I feel better at night knowing we have the upper hand. I understand we do not have the best reputation around the world now but at the same time we are still the only major super power in the world. Think about it? From the military standpoint, we police the world. Countries still go to us when their country is being overturned or there is a genocide going on. We are involved in every major dipolmatic meeting that occurs, six party talks, G-6, etc...Financially, the global ecnomoy is tied together so its safe to say that if european union, china, or our economy collapes it affects the financial standing of the global economy. All I'm saying is, America has not had the best decade in its history but just understand the position and the role we play in the world.

On the other hand Kevin, if China wasn't financing a huge part of our spending deficit, the politicians in Washington would gut both Medicare and Social Security plus close down more of our schools and libraries to make up the difference. This is why this country remains the worlds only superpower. What I dislike is the way the right-wing politicians choose to abuse this power.

Let's all hope that you're wrong, Phunnie boy. We did more than enough to hurt this man already. Are you aware of the murder of this man's family back in 2001 by the heinous C.I.A. agents? To this day, these murderers remain scott free while being paid quite handsomely to boot!!!
