Israel believed behind recent Syria strike

By Barbara Starr

A series of explosions on July 5 at a critical Syrian port was the result of airstrikes by Israeli warplanes, according to multiple U.S. officials.

Regional media widely reported the predawn explosions at Latakia, but no one had officially claimed responsibility.

Three U.S. officials told CNN the target of the airstrikes were Russian-made Yakhont anti-ship missiles that Israel believes posed a threat to its naval forces.

The officials declined to be named because of the sensitive nature of the information.

So far, the Israeli government has also declined to comment to CNN.

Israel's defense minister Moshe Yaalon denied involvement, according to one Israeli news site.

"It has been a long time that we are not intervening in Syria's bloody war. Red lines were presented and we maintain them," said Yaalon, according to YNet News. "There is an explosion here or an attack there, somewhere in the Middle East, most of the time they accuse us."

Israeli and U.S. intelligence are also watching closely for additional shipments of Russian arms to Syria from Russian warships located off the coast.

The United States believes some supplies, including ammunition and small arms, have been unloaded in recent weeks. So far, there has been no indication of heavy weapons or helicopters that the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad anticipates.

CNN has reported at least three previous Israeli airstrikes against Syrian targets in recent months in instances where it believed weapons were being transferred to Iranian backed Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon that could also threaten Israel.

All nations have a right to defend themselves. At least 75% of posts made on political blogs are anti-american or anti-Israeli. This tells me they are against basic human rights, are pro sharia law and war mongers, willing to spread lies and deception to undermine our beliefs. If Islam is soooooo great then why does it support terrorism? The killing of innocent men, women and children? Suicide? Because the leaders of Islam have corrupted the karon so much to their own needs that the average muslim believes them and will follow them in their philosophy. They believe if one does not convert to islam, then you must die. It's a religious war, plain and simple, A war they started but we will finish.

Israel is a bullied child that has pushed themselves into a corner and feel the only way to survive is to destroy everyone else. No other group in history has been given their own homeland after a genocide. If they deserved a homeland then it should have been part of Germany not a place that was already home to a group of people. Im so sick of Jews using the Holocaust as an excuse to kill and make life harder for the rest of the world.. Down with Israel
Free Palestine. Jews have taken on the roles of their oppressors, you all should be ashamed of yourselves

Who set you up as the ultimate authority? The people of Israel inhabited the land of Israel 1700 years before Islam became a religion. The Jewish people should have a part of Germany as a homeland? What are you smoking? It's pretty powerful. Germany is the last place on this earth Jews should be living in after what happened 1937-1945. But then, people like you do not bother to read real history books, that might get in the way of your very strong, and very wrong opinion set. Israel exists, it is a bright spot in the Middle East. Deal with it!

the jews in Germany and European countries were Khazars that due to political reasons converted to Judisim – it has been proven through DNA – this group of people DID NOT come from the middle east – DNA has also proven that the Palestinians are probably decedents of the biblical jews – what right did anyone have to take land from one group and give to another – do a little research about the oppression the Palestinians have suffered and continue to suffer

You have written that someone do not now history; Any historian would tell you that the Jews were removed or disband by the Roman empire in 79 AD and did not occupy the state of Israel again until into 1948 AD. Just for your facts, since you are well read!

golfchcick... "the jews in Germany and European countries were Khazars that due to political reasons converted to Judisim..."

If someone told me that this morning all Saudis due to political reasons converted to the faith of the ancient Maya I would not believe it. Now you may consider that today's Saudis are hundreds of time more about the ancient Maya than the Khazars who lived in the Est Russia in the 9th Century could possibly know about the Jews, the people who lived in the Middle East eight hundred years earlier and thousands of miles away from the Khazars.

If you could improve spelling and grammar, your historical interpretation might have more credibility. So by your statement, there were no Jews living in Israel between 79 AD and 1948? Absolutely untrue. Perhaps you need to visit the OSU library in Columbus and study those 1900 missing years a little better, and please, take Ben and Golfchick with you, they are very much in need of help.

You know Absolutely NOTHING of True History! The incredibly minute piece of land that Israel presently owns was there's' in the first place, as well as all of Jordan, most of Lebanon, most of Syria!!! So....... you say that Israelis are the Bully's??? That is the most Absurd statement EVER! Israel is the Biggest Underdog nation on the face of the planet...... but not for long. There are unfulfilled Prophecies yet to unfold that will make Israel the greatest Super Power on the face of the earth! And they will gain all of their previous property back I might add! They are God's Chosen!!! God gave them that land in the beginning of time, and now Squatters occupy most of it in the name of the poor victims. The victims who terrorize in the name of Alla! Wake up and smell the smoke, cause an EXCEEDINGLY GREAT ARMY IS ABOUT TO MAKE THEIR VOICES HEARD!

Sounds like an episode of the 700 Club! History shows that Jews grew out of various tribes who were basically criminals. They stole the land even in ancient times. They bully anyone they please and are most certainly not a chosen people. Otherwise, this would make God unjust. They cheat everyone and can't be trusted. Remember the USS Liberty? And the stolen uranium shipment? They murder those who disagree with their policies and extort whoever they want.

maybe they were involved maybe not. My only question is if the Syrian government finds evidence that they were involved are they wrong for launching a counter attack on a weapons shipment to Israel in the future in retaliation? In a perfect world no, but i'm guessing the rest of the world would condem the attacks and Israel would launch a full scale retaliation. In which Egypt and others would join in.

    • Thinker23

Michael... Syria can, of course, launch an attack on a weapons shipment to Israel. It will, however, have to deal with the consequences of such attack. No, it's not necessarily a question of "finding evidence" as there is no court such evidence would be used. Especially when the two sides involved are officially at war as Syria and Israel are.

For 40 years its was all about what a ruthless dictator Assad and his father was, how he killed 40,000 civilians in cold blood in the city of Hama in 1982 and how he kicked around his people ever since, but iit wasn't for you to change him its up to the people of Syria to decide that has been you talk all long. And when the people finally revolted over the imprisonment and torture of small school children you cheered it on, you sent your embassydors and politicians to demonstration in Syria assuring the Syrians that they will get the help they needed to get rid of they tyrant of the century, f.... Nato was talking about a no fly zone and military intervention so that people began to take arms against they're fellow countrymen and now we have a country that wont be put back together for ages. Take away the sarcasm, and your statement is spot on. Do you honestly believe that the citizens of the democratic state of Israel would choose war over peace? Have you ever even met an Israeli???

The Muslim brotherhood was overthrown by the US. U of Cal-Berkley's investigative reporting program discovered the connection between the state department and anti-Morey dissidents.

I bet this news is just to distract the world's attention from Egypt, as the entire plan in Egypt is crumbling and there's too much attention and pressure from there.

The question, as always, is "Who stands to gain?" Why would those three officials try to implicate Israel in the act, especially when the last time an American official made a similar statement, Syria has issued a warning that "next time" it'll have to attack Israel in response.

So, if CNN is correct, we have a number of U.S. officials trying to provoke Syria to attack Israel. Why?

Israel needs an excuse to bomb the crap out of Syria. They keep poking sticks in the eyes of every other middle eastern nation, one day they will go far with Iran and that Persian lion will wake up and bite them.

Get real, they have shown restraint and only do what they feel is necessary to protect themselves.

Adam, do yourself a favour and wake up to reality.
If there is one country in the Middle East that would want to avoid full scale conflict at the moment it is Israel. That is exactly why it is ridding the area of threats that may make that all -out war (that so many Islamic fundamentalists would love) happen.
If you look at the overwhelming (numerically not qualitatively ) superiority of Islamic countries and do some really basic arithmatic you will understand what I mean. Be honest for once.
