US plans to deliver fighter jets to Egypt

By Barbara Starr

The Obama administration tentatively plans to deliver four F-16 aircraft to Egypt, but is reviewing all U.S. military aid arrangements, according to a Pentagon official.

The planes were scheduled to be shipped by the end of August, but the delivery could be made more complicated if there is no Egyptian military plan to transition to civilian rule and the United States were compelled to formally declare a military coup had taken place, the official said.

If that declaration were made, it most likely would result in aid being halted. The official declined to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the information.

Opinion: U.S. must not fail Egypt

Until Thursday, all indications had been that the deliveries would go through as part of a $1.3 billion 2010 military aid package that called for 20 F-16s and Abrams tank parts to be sent to Egypt. A second Pentagon official had previously said the deliveries "were on track."

But at the behest of the White House, the Pentagon is now sounding a more cautious note.

"Given the events of last week, the president has directed relevant departments and agencies to review our assistance to the government of Egypt," the Defense Department said in a written statement.

Hey world we dont need your oil supply any more. Forget the suez canal. It's obvious this is what it's all over. We have enough resources to get our own oil and that's a fact. Let Israel protect themselves against the Egyptians if they're dumb enough to start a war. Why would we give any nation weapons who hate Americans is beyond me. Its time for real change, start worrying about us regular folks who work hard to help our country and our OWN citizens who need aid more than any rouge nation. I'd rather see our government give aid (spend hard working tax dollers or money they borrow from China) to help our own people out. I understand why others hate us its because they hate themselves. Look at people like JA who's held up in an embassy. Talk about being a prisoner, ha. My point is we need to worry about our own more than others, especially those who hate us. Thanks

@GreekGyro,its not the administration giving weapons of death to countrys bud its your republicans the war mongers like McCain siding with the MIC,lobbyists who just loves seeing death as long as its not one of their own...Remember Gyro it was Bushs,Cheneys lies that started the Iraq war remember against an innocent country in Iraq instead of Saudi Arabia the real backers of those 9/11 terrorists facts be known!!!It's been factually stated that more republicans as presidents have started or intervened in wars than democrates ..Remember only about 30% of republicans on Capital Hill have ever served militarily to the 70% of democrates who did but democrates again advocate for diplomacy for peace seeing what war does in death, destruction to all that are involved or not!!And liberals aren't against guns, just the stupid ones that shouldn't have them like Zimmerman in Florida to begin with in more strengent regulations, does that offend you Gyro,it doesn't me and I own plenty of guns!!Check out your white supremisist,KKK members in the NRA,ALEC groups they'll argue with me as well and I'm white, but intelligently raised!!

So the US government is cutting back spending within the military but we want to spend millions in sending a country military fighter jets. They also want to cut the benefits of our troops currently serving in the military? We keep sending our money around the world for no damn reason and they wonder why the dollar is getting weaker and weaker and our debt will never be settled. Who is footing this bill? China? Pretty soon they will own the united states, just like the mess we havent gotten out of from Iraq and now syria. Take your nose out of things Obama!

It is very, very sad to see that the US refuses to agree that this is a coup: the military kicked out an elected leader. Regardlessly of the political ideas of the leader, a coup is a coup.

What is going on here? Why doesn't the US stops the military shipmanets to a military that overthrows elected leaders?

Because it was a Muslim extremist government that would be unfriendly towards the US, that was kicked out.

Sure it was a coup. But the US government is prepared to tolerate as many coup's as it takes to get a government friendly to the US. That didn't sound too cynical ?

I do not understand why people like you are in such a hurry! The U.S. government is scientifically and surgically assessing the events and will decide in 10 years or maximum 15 years whether it was a coup or not. If the super-brilliants there in Washington decide it was a coup, then they will definitely cut the aid.

how wishy washy can this "so-called governement" be..on one hand we have sequestrian rules whereby government employees are furloughed, military training including air force training missions suspended, etc, but we can send money to egypt, syrian rebels, but at the same time the government also enacts stupid f* laws for social programs that tax us even more. pelosi, obama, reid, and his pet pig biden will bring down this nation..heck they already have pretty much. But I guess this is path that God is taking us according to what the scriptures say.

The military don't need newbies and the air force got to many airmen I don't know about the rest. So this will be the only black president in history. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Without new troops continuously entering the service there would be a "void" of lower tier troops. That means that promotion within the ranks would mean nothing as NCO's and SNCO's would be doing the duties of the troops they would normally supervise. $400 is a lot of money but the security of our nation through the integration of advanced training is a necessity. Closing schools for six months means our war fighting capabilities would be reduced. Sorry find another avenue or area to cut. Also I am a MSgt in the Air Force and we do not have enough troops so not sure what you are talking about.

By law, foreign aid must cease when there is a military coup. By not calling the military coup, a "military coup," we can continue sending billions of dollars in aid to Egypt.

The law only applies when the administration feels it does as they control the language in which the laws apply.

Realistically the only force in Egypt keeping some stability is the military. Without their presence: Utter chaos. And if civil society breaks down, the military is the only force that can keep yahoo jihadists from infiltrating the country like they did in Iraq and Libya. Keep their military strong and peace may break out. Egypt is too important to ignore. Let's try and keep US boots off their ground.

The term "aid" is VERY general used here... A more correct description is 'tanks and fighters and bombs paid for by tax-payers".

But "aid" sounds nicer, it makes you think about food and tents and doctors, things that actually help people instead of things that are used to overthrow an elected head-of-state.

Young people in Egypt should be working at a good salary, not breaking rocks and throwing at police! Give them work! There are many piramids and hanging gardens that could be built with modern technology! There are also irrigation chanels that need to be excavated. All this could make Egypt a more hospitable country for the visitors and for the Egyptians themselves! And, incidently, the Gibraltar Strait does need another Sphinks to overlook the port. Just bring those Caterpillar machines and do it!

True leaders who really care for and love their countries, do not want and would not sit and watch their country plunge into an unnecessary civil war. Egypt and Egyptians do not deserve to be plunged into a civil war at this point in history. The ousted president Morsy should be given the opportunity to call the muslim brotherhood and all his supporters of the streets, the military and the interim government should also call the anti morsy demonstrators of the streets of Egypt. If Morsy won the election once, i don't see why he wouldn't win again. I think it is only right for all the ruling parties to give Egypt and Egyptians another chance at free and fair elections a second time than to plunge the country into a civil war. It is clear to all that Morsy's year of government wasn't very pleasing to all Egyptians and other nations. I am concerned that if the situation is not handled in this way, the only direction to which Egypt is going is a civil war. I don't think this is necessary.

Let me see if I have this right. According to our president and liberal political leaders:

    1. It was o.k. to sell fighters and tanks as long as Egypt was run by the Islamist anti-American "Muslim Brotherhood."
    2. It is not o.k. to sell these items to Egypt now because the more secular armed forces oust the fundamentalist president for over-reaching his authority.
    3. It is o.k. to sell weapons to Egypt even though 20 to 40% of Egyptians would support dressing me in an Orange Jumpsuit and lopping my head off for being an agnostic.
    4. It is not o.k. for individuals to own firearms because our government thinks WE might be crazy and irrational.

Govt has decided its time to arm the Muslims who oppose the Arab Spring. Read Al-Jazeera report today. US paid money to anti- Morsy supporters and aided in rebellion. There are army factions in it as Morsy said army is not over and above the democratically elected leader of the nation. Egyptian Morsy was modeling after US in this regard where
US President is commander in chief of the Army of US. But the army made a underhand deal with US to overthrow Morsy. Part of the deal was if Morsy is overthrown, US should deliver the F16. Now US has to stick to the deal it made with Anti Morsy supporters. QED
