Why Americans should care about Egypt

By Jill Dougherty

As political turmoil engulfs Egypt, Americans are watching closely - and they should be: What happens in Egypt will directly affect Americans in many ways.

Travel: See the pyramids along the Nile - NOT

Egypt, with its 5,000-year history, the pyramids and pharaohs, was always a luxury travel destination for Americans but the political and social violence that has wracked the country for 2½ years has virtually destroyed Egypt's U.S. tourist business.

Now, the State Department is warning citizens not to travel to Egypt and U.S. citizens living in Egypt to leave. It also ordered non-emergency personnel and families of Americans working at the U.S. Embassy and consulate to leave.

Egypt is America's closest ally in the Arab world and it gets $1.5 billion a year in U.S. taxpayer money for military and civilian programs. In fact, in the last 30 years, the United States has sent more foreign aid to Egypt than to any country except Israel. Now, that money hangs in the balance as the Obama administration decides whether to call the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsy a "coup."

Sorry, not really interested in Islamic countries. On a scale of 1 to 10, my interest level in going to Egypt is about a 2 ... the same as other Islamic countries in that region. I love traveling, but even if I won a free all-expense paid tour, I don't think I would even bother to go.

First I'm Egyptian and I could truly said that " it's not a coup it's a revolution".. Second American people don't care about Egypt they care only about their internal affairs and that's good sometimes, But the US administration cares only about Israel not Egypt or Egyptian people... Finally and again " it's not a coup it's a revolution" 30-6-2013... Mr, Obama stop support terrorism in Egypt!!!

I agree with you in your opinion about the American administration interest because I really feel the same, and it brings up the hatred to the American Political intervention.

The 1.5 billion in aid to Egypt does not go to the people. It is military assistance that Washington is financing. This moneyc ould be better spent right here at home.

Unlike the president awaiting impeachment-the majority of the US does most assuredly support Egypt's overthrowing the terrorist muslim brotherhood. In no way should they have been involved in any political activity or positioning themselves to threaten a government or government official. The democratic process failed at the moment the muslim brotherhood, a very well known vile, hateful, untolerant, extremely violent, group politically positioned themselves to overtake the government. Same is what they tried here, the moment this president invited them into the white house and supped with them, he should have been tried as an enemy of the state. Mr. President you are wrong. The United States does most certainly support any country that overthrows a terrorist party that presents themselves as a religion when they are maneuvering to overtake countries by force. Mr. President please step down, you are an embarrassment to our country!!!

The state media needs to start worrying about the needs of Americans and not the needs of the politicians and bankers in DC

The Guns Over People tea potty only care about lining their pockets with the hard earned money of Americans. Democracy means nothing to them. They want to stop voters who see thru them by suppresing their votes.

But we don't care any more than we care about Syria. Arab Spring nations just ruin themselves then ask the US or the UN for a do-over.

If freedom and democracy is not a child of your own effort, you won't care for it as if it were.

We are 17 trillion dollars in debt. Our economy is crashing due to continued unemployment. We have the big government at the helm. We have Muslim terrorists training in Pennsylvania, for God's sake. And, with his Muslim Brotherhood buddies in OUR White House, our President is taking a 100Million Dollar Vacation and has promised Africa 17 billion dollars to shore up their electricity? Screw the Muslims and the rest of the world. It's past time that we straighten out AmeriKa.

Well put, USMC1371. I agree with both you and The Maeven. We need to return to Isolationism which is a great idea whose time has truly come.

@George,please explain isolationism and when America wondered away from it..Maybe after the start of the ectronic age with telephones over a hundred years ago again please explain your delushional rant about something this country wasn't involved in since the civil war bud ...With republicans involved with the MIC and America because of it meddling in on every countrys business its hard to be isolated when you're the life of the party ...Start by telling that McCain to stay home and quit trying to sell arms for the MIC like Rumsfield did to foriegn countrys for Reagan, just the same crap decades later at again tax payers expense, typical republicans the warmongers of our country!!

Of course the right-wing thugs in Washington care about Egypt since every leader there since Nassar have been no more than stooges for them by carrying out each and every order to the letter! Now they want us to worry too. Then again, every leader in the Middle East, except for Bashar al-Assad of Syria is no more than a Muslim elitist puppet with the M.I.C. in Washington pulling the strings!!!

      A heads up....

We have a debt driven economy...the debt doesn't matter one bit. That's why it continues to cruise out of sight and it doesn't matter who is in the oval office. The bankers (The Fed) tell our treasury what and how much to print and charges the government (We the people) interest on that money right out of the gate – huge racket there. The whole thing is a scam. The reason we left the gold standard is so they could do exactly what they are doing..and keep the bulk of us getting up and going to work.

@Archon,you can't expect this debt with interest bud to go down anytime soon because the past administration put all his past dealings with 2 unfunded wars,Medicare Part D,tax breaks and 800,000 a month on unemployement on the government charge card and Pres.Obama got stuck with it and as you know is trying to pay it off..Remember being responsible is not only using that charge card but being financially responsible for having the income to pay it off and Bushs tax cuts didn't help our debt problems at all either just excelerating the debt skyward that's all..Remember it was Pres.Clinton also a democrate that left a surplus that Bush was happy to give away instead of putting it away for a rainy day didn't he!!Now we're paying for his mistakes and republicans here are the first to deny it aren't they!!
