First on CNN: U.S. to send Patriot missile battery, fighter jets to Jordan as part of exercise

The decision to deploy a Patriot missile battery and F-16 aircraft to Jordan was made late Friday at a meeting with top military and civilian Defense Department officials to bolster U.S. military support for Jordan - a crucial ally in the Middle East - as the violence from the Syrian civil war spreads, according to a senior U.S. official, CNN has learned.
The official declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the situation and also declined to say who was in the meeting. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has been traveling outside the United States, and it could not be learned if he attended via teleconference, although several officials tell CNN he was aware of the discussions and approved the deployment.
The overall goal is to demonstrate U.S. military support for an increasingly fragile Jordan, which is bearing the burden of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and a growing potential threat from extremist elements including an al Qaeda affiliate organization operating inside Syria.
The weapons systems will be sent initially as part of a military exercise called Eager Lion, planned for later this month, with an understanding they may stay in the country. There is clearly a broader message being sent, according to U.S. military officials.
"In order to enhance the defensive posture and capacity of Jordan, some of these assets may remain beyond the exercise at the request of the government of Jordan," Lt .Col. T.G. Taylor, a spokesman at the U.S. Central Command, told CNN.
The Patriot missiles were originally expected to be sent from their base at Ft. Bliss, Texas, but the senior official said they may simply be redeployed from Patriots already in the Middle East. Jordan does not face a Scud missile threat from Syria, but the deployment comes amid growing concern that some Syrian missiles are being shipped to Hezbollah and could be used to attack targets across the region.
In recent days, violence has spread to Lebanon, and Israeli forces have increased security along their northern border. The F-16s and air crews will train with Jordanian combat air forces amid growing pressure from some in Congress for the White House to support a no-fly zone over Syria.
Separately from the exercise, the United States is sending 200 military planners from the headquarters of the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss to Jordan to assist in long-term planning with Jordanian forces in case a chemical weapons crisis erupts, or if a wide scale humanitarian relief mission is ordered.

Deployment of USAF F-22A Raptors would have been news to me, not F-16s from the same “stable” (Lockheed Martin).
Interestingly Lockheed Martin is also the final assembler of Patriot SAM/ATBM; although contribution of Raytheon is significant.

The fine print of the treaty (which has most Americans and both the House and Senate appalled) is a whole lot more than just our 2nd amendment rights. It will empower the UN and the media to tell us if we can support our allies that have retaliated against terrorist attacks which can be reported as such or not.

It is all a game. This move is merely response to Russia's the other day (selling Assad regime advanced weaponry), nothing more than a pawn in a strategic game of chess. Obama Admin is making the right call and playing this extremely cautious. Russia's next move will be to put "observers" on the ground in Tartus, Syria...likely preventing the highly desired no-fly zone.
Also, to be clear, because many people seem to be knocking Obama... had a Republican been in office, US would be full-fledge arming the rebels, a no-fly zone in Syria would already be in effect, and possibly even special forces would already be involved on the ground primarily attempting to secure chemical weapons.
You really believe the US isn't already covertly arming and advising the rebels? A detachment of CIA advisors are currently in Turkey helping to coordinate arms shipments to the Syrian rebels. No doubt that will also be the unspoken purpose of the deployment to Jordan, which is another supplier of arms to the rebels.

The Israelis are concerned because they are the only stable democracy in the region, and are religiously and culturally different from their neighbors, and have an indigenous Palestinian population that shares the neighbors beliefs. This leads to the Israeli-Arab issue.

Russia will not intervene to prop up the Assad regime. If anything, Russia is beginning to signal that it is okay with Assad being removed from power, this is shown in the fact they've stopped most weapons shipments to Syria. Those that proceed are considered to be useless against the rebels infantry forces.
The Saudi's will not be overrun by an Islamic insurgency, because they are a very stable, prosperous nation that also has close ties economically and militarily to the United States, including large caches of US-made military hardware. Any insurgency would quickly fizzle out, especially considering that the Saudis are Islamic themselves (unlike the US/Israel) and the Saudi's control numerous important religious sites, such as Mecca. Islamists can't gain traction because there is no disaffected youth population, no fascist dictator, and no religious divide.
You are absolutely wrong. Russia has openly sent Syria hundreds of anti-aircraft missiles and based three frigates in the Black Sea. I don't think Israel can win this time. The game may be up. If I am not mistaken, the rebels are largely funded by the saudi's; as was ossama.
The problem more rests in how the funds are being distributed. The rebels do not receive enough to be successful in their campaign, but they receive enough to prevent themselves from being wiped out.
What needs to happen is that the international community needs to get off the fence and put a dog in the fight, one way or the other. As long as the international community simply talks, and only gives enough to maintain status quo, we're not going to see this issue get resolved.

That's the key, Obama doesn't want to give the rebels any weapons that might be used in a terrorist attack, but he wants more Al Qaeda and Al Nusra fighters to go get killed in the fight, so they have to get enough supplies to keep it interesting. Assad/Iran are both pouring immense resources into this as well as Russia. None of them can even hold a candle to the U.S. economy and it's cash money power, so eventually, the fight will become too costly even for all three of them combined. the U.S.S.R. got outspent in the 80's and they will again this time. All Obama has to do is sit back and make sure the rebels are well(enough) funded.
It has been noted and reported for a long time now that it is the Arab, Sunni governments that are funding the rebels. Hopefully, the West will not contribute weapons to this strange group of opposing fanatical religious "rebels". Perhaps Assad will now allow more freedoms for the Syrian people

Actually, Russia has been fairly cooperative with the United States. They've curtailed weapons shipments to Syria that might be used against the rebels, while still providing material that can't to honor contracts signed with the regime before the civil war kicked off.
Also the US and Russia have moved closer together on the ballistic missile defense shield that drove a wedge between us during the late Bush-early Obama administrations.
Really the primary issues we've had with Russia recently has been the detention of political protestors for some questionably illegal things, and some fairness issues we raised about Putin's last election.
While our economy continues to implode, our Republican and Democrat leaders have decided to give more financial aid in the form of military weapons to another US government subsidized country.

Actually, Jordan is a pretty friendly nation with the US and the EU. It's enjoyed an "advanced" status with the EU since 2010, and was a founding memory of the Arab League. They're very close to us and Europe, and that's one reason we share our military protection with them, including allowing Jordanian military officers to attend training in the US.
Simply put, these aren't weapons going to a country that hates us, these are weapons going to one of the few Arab nations that has very close ties to the US, something we need to do to maintain good ties with the Arab world.

The movement of US Air Defense assets to Jordan should not be misconstrued to mean the United States is "boxing Israel in". If Iraq denies Israel airspace to attack Iran and Jordan has sophisticated US Air Defense to deny Israel access through its airspace and the United States has the Sixth Fleet in the Red Sea, it pretty much makes an air launched attack against Iran near impossible.
