First on CNN: U.S. to send Patriot missile battery, fighter jets to Jordan as part of exercise

By Barbara Starr

The decision to deploy a Patriot missile battery and F-16 aircraft to Jordan was made late Friday at a meeting with top military and civilian Defense Department officials to bolster U.S. military support for Jordan - a crucial ally in the Middle East - as the violence from the Syrian civil war spreads, according to a senior U.S. official, CNN has learned.

The official declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the situation and also declined to say who was in the meeting. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has been traveling outside the United States, and it could not be learned if he attended via teleconference, although several officials tell CNN he was aware of the discussions and approved the deployment.

The overall goal is to demonstrate U.S. military support for an increasingly fragile Jordan, which is bearing the burden of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and a growing potential threat from extremist elements including an al Qaeda affiliate organization operating inside Syria.

The weapons systems will be sent initially as part of a military exercise called Eager Lion, planned for later this month, with an understanding they may stay in the country. There is clearly a broader message being sent, according to U.S. military officials.

"In order to enhance the defensive posture and capacity of Jordan, some of these assets may remain beyond the exercise at the request of the government of Jordan," Lt .Col. T.G. Taylor, a spokesman at the U.S. Central Command, told CNN.

The Patriot missiles were originally expected to be sent from their base at Ft. Bliss, Texas, but the senior official said they may simply be redeployed from Patriots already in the Middle East. Jordan does not face a Scud missile threat from Syria, but the deployment comes amid growing concern that some Syrian missiles are being shipped to Hezbollah and could be used to attack targets across the region.

In recent days, violence has spread to Lebanon, and Israeli forces have increased security along their northern border. The F-16s and air crews will train with Jordanian combat air forces amid growing pressure from some in Congress for the White House to support a no-fly zone over Syria.

Separately from the exercise, the United States is sending 200 military planners from the headquarters of the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss to Jordan to assist in long-term planning with Jordanian forces in case a chemical weapons crisis erupts, or if a wide scale humanitarian relief mission is ordered.

No, it mean Jordan could fall next and we are trying to prop up a dictator. The Jordanian monarchy was built on fraud, a minority Hashemite controlling a majority Sunni. This regime will fall too. Obama die not seem to know who to back anymore. He should have stuck with Mubarak in Egypt, Assad in Syria, Gaddafi in Libya rather than the terrorists now dominating these countries.

The real reasons for the 9 11 attacks:

Osama bin Laden and the jihadists in Afghanistan were friends of the United States.United States armed jihadists against the Soviet occupation. After the defeat of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan in 1988, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990, then the U. S sent 500,000 troops to the Holy Land for Muslims "Saudi Arabia."Then became Osama bin Laden and the jihadists " Very angry from the U.S " . U.S. soldiers in the holy land for Muslims was an insult to Muslims." If Muslims were sent Muslim army to occupy the State of the Vatican," the Holy Land for Christians " then Christians will get angry and send the Army for the Liberation of the Vatican."Osama bin Laden and the jihadists have become the enemies of the U. S after the American occupation of the Holy Lands "Saudi Arabia." Osama bin Laden asked Americans to withdraw from Saudi Arabia, but America rejected, then bin Laden began to launch attacks against Americans in Somalia, Kenya and Yemen, in the end the U. S attacked on 9 11 " .

We conclude that the reasons for the 9 11 attacks, "the U.S. military presence in the holy places of the Muslims (Saudi Arabia)," not arm the Afghan rebels against the Soviet occupation.

Many Americans believe that " if we arming the Syrian rebels, then 9 11 will repeat."

This belief is a big mistake, and it was the reason for the massacres in Syria, as the Assad regime has all kinds of weapons, and the rebels have only light weapons.

Syria is not a holy land such as Saudi Arabia.

Now we know the real reason for the attacks of 9 11 .

Why continue the terrible massacres in Syria because of " misconceptions about the 9 11 attacks " .

Now, the U.S should stop the massacre in Syria quickly by " no-fly zone over Syria, and arming the rebels with anti-tanks," then the Assad regime will fall within one month, and the horrible massacre in Syria will stop, and peace returns to Syria.

We dont want the Syrian people become the new enemy of the U.S because the U. S to prevent sophisticated weapons for Syrian rebels such as anti-aircraft.

Why do we make "new enemies" because of "misconceptions about the 9 11 attacks?"

We want the Syrian people, become a friend of the U. S, so we must help them.

Ummm, the "jihadists" are who exactly in your opinion? The Taliban? If you mean the muhajadin that fought the Russians, and later destroyed Kabul with their infighting.. those are the SAME warlords that the US used to push the Taliban (Pashtun) out. They were called the "Northern Alliance".. remember them? Your version of what happened seems to me to be less accurate, and more just something you pieced together so it would all make sense to you.

This time next year, we will have to seek the United Nations approval before sending F 16’s and Scud Missile defense systems to another country. Read “Kerry says US will sign UN treaty on arms regulation despite the Senate and House’s opposition”.

The treaty covers “battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, large-caliber artillery systems, combat aircraft, attack helicopters, warships, missiles and missile launchers, and small arms and light weapons”. “It prohibits Countries that ratify it from transferring conventional weapons if the UN says they violate arms embargoes or if they promote acts of genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes”.

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/06/03/lawmakers-urge-obama-to-reject-un-arms-treaty-as-it-opens-for-signature/?test=latestnews

The fine print of the treaty (which has most Americans and both the House and Senate appalled) is a whole lot more than just our 2nd amendment rights. It will empower the UN and the media to tell us if we can support our allies that have retaliated against terrorist attacks which can be reported as such or not.

This has got to make Richard Falk, a top official of the United Nations Human Rights Council, very happy.

    Wake up folks.

This treaty is just to prevent OTHER nations from supplying arms not the USA. The US will always find a way around the treaty.

        June 4, 2013 at 5:37 am |
    • Tadpole

Just so you are informed; there is nothing that anyone can sign with the UN that would have presidence or higher authority over what is decided in a national parlement. That goes for every country, not just the US. If you violate a UN treaty, there are no consequences. The only arm of the UN that has any power whatsoever is the UN security counsil, in which the US has veto-rights. IMHO people that think the UN is going to be able to dictate anything to the US are people that poorly informed.

It is all a game. This move is merely response to Russia's the other day (selling Assad regime advanced weaponry), nothing more than a pawn in a strategic game of chess. Obama Admin is making the right call and playing this extremely cautious. Russia's next move will be to put "observers" on the ground in Tartus, Syria...likely preventing the highly desired no-fly zone.

Also, to be clear, because many people seem to be knocking Obama... had a Republican been in office, US would be full-fledge arming the rebels, a no-fly zone in Syria would already be in effect, and possibly even special forces would already be involved on the ground primarily attempting to secure chemical weapons.

You really believe the US isn't already covertly arming and advising the rebels? A detachment of CIA advisors are currently in Turkey helping to coordinate arms shipments to the Syrian rebels. No doubt that will also be the unspoken purpose of the deployment to Jordan, which is another supplier of arms to the rebels.

something is brewing on the horizon. don't quite know what, as i don't have all the information. but if i think for a bit...
syria... saudi's funding the rebels.. everyone had expected the rebels to win by now. rebels committing all manners of atrocities and blaming it on assad.. truth starting to become evident; fear is that soon public opinion will turn against the rebels
iran.. developing nuclear for peaceful purposes. israel hates iran because israel is arrogant beyond belief and thinks themselves special. iran supports hezbollah, hamas and syria.
saudi's don't want iran as a power because iran is a threat to saudis. saudis work with israel to oust syria. syria gone implies iran less powerful a regional player. syria gone implies iran has less influence in region. syria gone implies israel has an easier opportunity to attack iran.
now, the wildcard. assume assad does not fall. assume further that iran de-stablizes iraq and promotes insuegency in saudi arabia. israel is now cornered. assume further that russia stands in the way of the us getting involved (by sending the message to the us "if you get involved on israel's side, we get involved in iran's side).. and you have another north korea or vietnam. in the end, israel is completely destroyed.
either way, it is best for israel to shut up and make no noise. the only outcome is utter humiliation for israel.

Can't, or should I say, won't happen like that. The Israelis are concerned because they are the only stable democracy in the region, and are religiously and culturally different from their neighbors, and have an indigenous Palestinian population that shares the neighbors beliefs. This leads to the Israeli-Arab issue.
Iran's nuclear program is also mired in mystery, because Iran, like Iraq in the 80s-90s, is not permitting the IAEA inspectors to do their work in the nation, either by denying the IAEA access, or obstructionism.

Russia will not intervene to prop up the Assad regime. If anything, Russia is beginning to signal that it is okay with Assad being removed from power, this is shown in the fact they've stopped most weapons shipments to Syria. Those that proceed are considered to be useless against the rebels infantry forces.
The Saudi's will not be overrun by an Islamic insurgency, because they are a very stable, prosperous nation that also has close ties economically and militarily to the United States, including large caches of US-made military hardware. Any insurgency would quickly fizzle out, especially considering that the Saudis are Islamic themselves (unlike the US/Israel) and the Saudi's control numerous important religious sites, such as Mecca. Islamists can't gain traction because there is no disaffected youth population, no fascist dictator, and no religious divide.

You are absolutely wrong. Russia has openly sent Syria hundreds of anti-aircraft missiles and based three frigates in the Black Sea. I don't think Israel can win this time. The game may be up. They've tried to provoke everyone of their neighbours and they are not succeeding. I don't know how much more obvious is can be. A major war is very likely on the horizon. Read some history, think for yourself...we're in 1937 and the Middle East is Europe. Problem is, this war will truly be the First World War.

    • M.E. in a nutshell

The Sunnis(saudis, jordan, qatar, et al) and the Shiites(syria, Iran, Part of Iraq, Lebanon) have been bitter enemies for over a thousand years. This is the fundamental issue that causes the violence in the Middle East. This pre dates Christopher Columbus. What we are seeing in Syria and Iraq right now is merely a continuation of this hatred. People blame the west, but just wait. Once the oil fields run dry, you will see. The west will have no interest and the dogs will be abandoned, but they will still fight. Once the scapegoat of western meddling is no longer a valid excuse, you will see fighting continue unabated. Praise Allah and pass the AK47.

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015. haha ha

      Well, you're....wrong.
The US has "invaded" Panama, Grenada, Cuba (Bay of Pigs), Haiti, Iraq and Afghanistan. That's 6 not 60.
Even including military assistance programs to other nations (counter-narco in South America, counter-terrorism in Africa), and UN action (Korea, Bosnia, etc), we are nowhere near 60 nations.

Oh, and the last Shah of Iran, Mohammad Pahlavi was not installed by the US. He rose to his position in 1941, and ruled until his overthrow by the Ayatollah and his movement in 1979.
And yes, the US supported Iraq in the Iran-Iraq war, considering Iran had (and still does) an illegitimate government, and that same government was one of the driving forces to the start of that war.

Please, educate yourself before you speak.

You suck it long, and you suck it hard.

You lack of honesty is noted. Russia shot down a Korean Airlines jet. America made a mistake and apologized. America did not set up the Shah. They helped set up the Shah. Iranian forces were the main movers in that coup. You forgot to mention that Iran had stolen the assets of the foreign oil companies. Government theft is still theft. One buys assets; one does not just take them after private business has built up at great expense a profitable concern. I am hardly a great fan of un-controlled capitalism, but if nations want to play in that game they have to play by the rules. By the way, the Islamic revolution that ousted the Shah killed far far more people than the Shah's regime did.

The problem more rests in how the funds are being distributed. The rebels do not receive enough to be successful in their campaign, but they receive enough to prevent themselves from being wiped out.
What needs to happen is that the international community needs to get off the fence and put a dog in the fight, one way or the other. As long as the international community simply talks, and only gives enough to maintain status quo, we're not going to see this issue get resolved.

      • That's Obama's Game

"The rebels do not receive enough to be successful in their campaign, but they receive enough to prevent themselves from being wiped out."

That's the key, Obama doesn't want to give the rebels any weapons that might be used in a terrorist attack, but he wants more Al Qaeda and Al Nusra fighters to go get killed in the fight, so they have to get enough supplies to keep it interesting. Assad/Iran are both pouring immense resources into this as well as Russia. None of them can even hold a candle to the U.S. economy and it's cash money power, so eventually, the fight will become too costly even for all three of them combined. the U.S.S.R. got outspent in the 80's and they will again this time. All Obama has to do is sit back and make sure the rebels are well(enough) funded.

It has been noted and reported for a long time now that it is the Arab, Sunni governments that are funding the rebels. Actually, Russia has been fairly cooperative with the United States. They've curtailed weapons shipments to Syria that might be used against the rebels, while still providing material that can't to honor contracts signed with the regime before the civil war kicked off.
Also the US and Russia have moved closer together on the ballistic missile defense shield that drove a wedge between us during the late Bush-early Obama administrations.

Really the primary issues we've had with Russia recently has been the detention of political protestors for some questionably illegal things, and some fairness issues we raised about Putin's last election.

Actually, Jordan is a pretty friendly nation with the US and the EU. It's enjoyed an "advanced" status with the EU since 2010, and was a founding memory of the Arab League. They're very close to us and Europe, and that's one reason we share our military protection with them, including allowing Jordanian military officers to attend training in the US.

Simply put, these aren't weapons going to a country that hates us, these are weapons going to one of the few Arab nations that has very close ties to the US, something we need to do to maintain good ties with the Arab world.

The movement of US Air Defense assets to Jordan should not be misconstrued to mean the United States is "boxing Israel in". If Iraq denies Israel airspace to attack Iran and Jordan has sophisticated US Air Defense to deny Israel access through its airspace and the United States has the Sixth Fleet in the Red Sea, it pretty much makes an air launched attack against Iran near impossible. That however is merely speculation isn't it?

Now think back a couple on months and think about the Patriot unit that was sent to Turkey. Keep looking at the MAP. When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

    (1) Weapons (sword) in the form of the U.S. sending missiles and jets to Jordan is now underway!
    (2) Plague has now entered the world! The MERS virus has a mortality rate of over 50% and has travelled from the Middle-East to Italy. (That's over 1/2 the people dead in your house if it gets in).
    (3) Famine will come later with Hell (Hades) as the economy crashes unlike any other crash in human history!

I read scripture also and you are wrong. The world is a much better place today, even with some of the insanity that still takes place. Just need to wake up and you will see it. Love, Faith and Hope.

You my friend are crazy. People like you are the one that should be kept away from all guns or anything that can harm a person.
You are really scary. The only one that can tell and know when the world is going to end is the Great man himself, God. So stop trying to be like him.

First of all according to the scriptures the world will not end.
Second you are correct that no one will know the exact hour however Jesus tells us to watch the signs and to know when the time is near.
