First on CNN: U.S. to send Patriot missile battery, fighter jets to Jordan as part of exercise

The decision to deploy a Patriot missile battery and F-16 aircraft to Jordan was made late Friday at a meeting with top military and civilian Defense Department officials to bolster U.S. military support for Jordan - a crucial ally in the Middle East - as the violence from the Syrian civil war spreads, according to a senior U.S. official, CNN has learned.
The official declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the situation and also declined to say who was in the meeting. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has been traveling outside the United States, and it could not be learned if he attended via teleconference, although several officials tell CNN he was aware of the discussions and approved the deployment.
The overall goal is to demonstrate U.S. military support for an increasingly fragile Jordan, which is bearing the burden of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and a growing potential threat from extremist elements including an al Qaeda affiliate organization operating inside Syria.
The weapons systems will be sent initially as part of a military exercise called Eager Lion, planned for later this month, with an understanding they may stay in the country. There is clearly a broader message being sent, according to U.S. military officials.
"In order to enhance the defensive posture and capacity of Jordan, some of these assets may remain beyond the exercise at the request of the government of Jordan," Lt .Col. T.G. Taylor, a spokesman at the U.S. Central Command, told CNN.
The Patriot missiles were originally expected to be sent from their base at Ft. Bliss, Texas, but the senior official said they may simply be redeployed from Patriots already in the Middle East. Jordan does not face a Scud missile threat from Syria, but the deployment comes amid growing concern that some Syrian missiles are being shipped to Hezbollah and could be used to attack targets across the region.
In recent days, violence has spread to Lebanon, and Israeli forces have increased security along their northern border. The F-16s and air crews will train with Jordanian combat air forces amid growing pressure from some in Congress for the White House to support a no-fly zone over Syria.
Separately from the exercise, the United States is sending 200 military planners from the headquarters of the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss to Jordan to assist in long-term planning with Jordanian forces in case a chemical weapons crisis erupts, or if a wide scale humanitarian relief mission is ordered.

Jordan could maybe afford two Patriot batteries if it spent it's entire annual defense budget on them and nothing else, including wages for their army. A country as small as Jordan cannot begin to afford weapons of this class. Even if they were given the systems they could not afford to maintain them adequately.

F4s were the fighter aircraft during the Vietnam conflict. The F16 started service in 1978, and has received multiple upgrades over the years.
These F16's are current and up to date weapon systems just like the ones Obama is sending to the Muslim Brotherhood. Apparently Obama has switched sided in the war on terror and we have nothing to say about it. He is exercising his mandate to "do things my way".

Agreements were made with Jordan and some of them were made decades ago. If we do nothing else we must honor our commitments. Jordan honored their commitment to us. They also have many refugees from past struggles in the region. They are trying to keep the peace but they will need our backing to do so.

This is a strange posting cbr. One: You somehow think that these are fulfilling some committment made to the Jordanians? There is no indication that a dime has been paid to acquire them. In fact it states clearly how the weapons systems will get there, why they will get there and why they will remain there. None of this is because of past committments.
Second, While the Jordanians have kindly taken Syrian refugees, a Patriot missile battery or and F16 will do very littel to alleviate that situation, surely I need not elaborate.
Third, you might want to check your atlas but Jordan is not exactly a neighbour, and even so, they are an ally of the Americans in the region and therefore your country need not make peace with them.

Far from our best weapons even now, but even if they were our current best weapons, 10 years from now they will be 2nd or 3rd line weapons at most.
You never know. Aircraft are always getting upgraded with new technologies. B-52's were the newest strategic aircraft in the 1950's and we still have them at the ready today just in case because they kept getting upgraded with the latest technologies.

David, if in fact you know any history of the region, you will be aware that the Palestinians, (not all of them) abandoned their land to allow a 'Clean sweep' for the coming ethnic cleansing of Jews by their Arab neighbours on several occasions throughout the sad history of the region. Part of the problem has been the Palestinians inability to recognise the basic inhumanity of attacking the Jews in the first place. Now they merely feel sorry for themselves. Second reason, Russia for centuries wanted a naval port in the Mediterranean Sea, Syria is the only country that allowed them and the port is being build as we speak. The good news, when it comes to foreign policy Russia never achieved anything worth mentioning other than keeping Cuba safe from U.S intervention. If Assad stays in power, that naval base will be a big problem for the West and all the neighboring countries. At this time in this country we are doing the tango, two steps forward, one back, at the end we will be involved up to our earlobes, we have no choice. Eastern Mediterranean Sea will not be surrendered to Russia, Syria, Iran troika. Finally there is the religious war of Sunni versus Shiites That is the Arabian Peninsula against Iran and majority in Iraq and of course Syria. The problem is that the Sunni's are Al-Qaeda. They believe that the killing of civilians is religiously sanctioned, and they ignore any aspect of religious scripture which might be interpreted as forbidding the murder of civilians and internecine fighting. Al-Qaeda also opposes man-made laws, and wants to replace them with a strict form of sharia law.

Oil shale resources have the potential to increase Jordan's reserves significantly, but as of early 2013 such resources are not yet commercially viable.

Jordan has proven one of our staunchest allies in this chaotic region. Remember, F-16s are made in Ft. Worth......which is in the US... There are other nations with equivalent fighters that would love to gather inroads for military sales in Jordan. Although not a true democracy, in that area it's one of the best governments going! It goes back to post WWII -if US hadn't helped rebuild Western Europe and be the one standing up to USSR, Europe wouldn't be US's third largest trading partner today. So if they don't help countries today in fighting terrorist and maintaining overseas armies eventually areas like Syria, North Korea, and Iran will spill out of control and there will be direct attacks on US mainland. By helping others and maintaining troops around the world, in the main they are preventing this. Always remember terrorists and dictators are not rational people – they don't care if innocents get killed.
Your leaving out the grassroots level of support America earned after WW2 in Europe. This is by far the most important reason it worked out that way. These other countries like Palestine, Israel, China, Egypt, Libyia, Afghanistan, Iraq do not have a natural grass roots support for anything American. Yes I did it I included one of our biggest allies in that list because Israel is so self centered they would throw America under the bus in a heart beat if they didnt need us so badly.
I havent seen more ignorance of people who claim that if it was not for US the world would not be as safe it is. If US did not lead the efforts to supply arms to people... freedom would be in jeopardy. Flip that thought around and apply it to US. If there were more guns in US.. US citizens would be much safer? Now that we agree on that ignorance let us stop fooling ourselves. The more arms we supply any region the more fighting and killing can ensue as a result of it. But we are not arming the bad guys you say!! How good are we and our acts if they ultimately result in more killing and destruction of life and property? The Military Industrial Complex must earn revenue. Russians have similar goals.
Right now the US-Israeli goal is to arm both sides in Muslim countries that have strife.. so they can kill themselves and that reduces their burden to go and kill more Muslims. It also prevents acts like Boston Bombing and Meat Cleaver jobs as witnessed in London. What we are gleeful about will soon come to bite us... because we supplied them arms to kill each other. We will ultimately bear the brunt of it.
I suggest we do not supply any arms to Middle East. However we should attack those arm shipments that are sent to Middle East by other nations. This will give us a higher moral ground when we discuss peace.

America will support any bad or good guys that benefit our pocketbooks. We gladly sell chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein. Im reading a bunch of Obama hate from people who are indicating he started some war and that he has the world hating us. I have a couple of questions for you uniformed folks. 1. What war did Obama start? 2. Where are all the protestors in every country he visits including our allies like Bush had? Thank you for one of the few intelligent replies here, concernedforliberty. I'm not sure how many people realize how much we (the USA) have invested overseas to protect our assests there. I, for one can not begin to be an armchair/PC political specialist. There is just too much to know and understand. I was brought up to respect our President whether Dem or Rep. My parents were depression kids. If it were so simple on the domestic side to fix the job situation, to keep our tax money here, I think we would have done that by now. I believe it is slowing improving. Not as fast as people want... but it is happening. Not only have we invested here... we have invested all over this world. We are a very complex world and political dealings are not my favorite bag. I'm not part of the "hater groups or let's blame the President . I'm a hard worker and come from hard working parents. I'm a proud American. I love my country and I cherish our freedoms. If I was told I had to fight for my nation, I would. I'm too old now, but I've always thought this, even as a young woman. I work in a professional building. I make my own living. I've also lived in Israel for 6 months back in 1980. I wanted to see what it would be like and learn about another culture. I'm not Jewish... just a small town girl form Washington State. I've stepped out of my comfort zone and learned about another nation. Now I've got lifetime friends overseas. I think a lot of us become too comfortable behind our PCs and spew out so much hate that they forget to look at the big picture. Our own personal situations can be most engulfing, especially if we have low paying jobs, health issues and feel abandoned. Our own culture is slowly changing. Some of us can't keep up with technology. Some are so afraid and angry they vent, just to vent. It's all about our own perspective and situation. Because we live in the USA we have the freedom to call our President names and accuse him of being evil. I find that petty. That's my humble opinion that I feel I need to say now and then. It's funny because the same people who say government cannot create jobs, totally over look the defense industry. It is the LARGEST jobs program in the nation. I am one of them the company I work for has over 92K employee's world wide. My company is not one of the top 5 largest. More importantly, our contract are 10-30 yrs long. It is a government hand out to the MIC. I benefit absolutely from this, I would rather our government funded education, science, heatlh care, space exploration anything other than killing and destruction for my job.

Bashar al-Assad, the illigimenate dictator in Syria has murdered 120,000+ innocent Syrians, and raped, tortured, and detained, hundreds of thousands of more according to the UN backed Syrian observatory for Human Rights, also refered to as the SOHR. Whether you are in favor of a Humanitirain intervention or not, we (USA) have invested trillions into the Middle East in the last several decades. Letting the ME, and our interests and allies become destablized by some illigimate, un elected tyrant like Bashar al-Assad is insanity on our behalf. While I am a democrat, I do support Humanitrian interventions like that in Syria, Bosnia, Kosovo and others.
