First on CNN: U.S. to send Patriot missile battery, fighter jets to Jordan as part of exercise

By Barbara Starr

The decision to deploy a Patriot missile battery and F-16 aircraft to Jordan was made late Friday at a meeting with top military and civilian Defense Department officials to bolster U.S. military support for Jordan - a crucial ally in the Middle East - as the violence from the Syrian civil war spreads, according to a senior U.S. official, CNN has learned.

The official declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the situation and also declined to say who was in the meeting. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has been traveling outside the United States, and it could not be learned if he attended via teleconference, although several officials tell CNN he was aware of the discussions and approved the deployment.

The overall goal is to demonstrate U.S. military support for an increasingly fragile Jordan, which is bearing the burden of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and a growing potential threat from extremist elements including an al Qaeda affiliate organization operating inside Syria.

The weapons systems will be sent initially as part of a military exercise called Eager Lion, planned for later this month, with an understanding they may stay in the country. There is clearly a broader message being sent, according to U.S. military officials.

"In order to enhance the defensive posture and capacity of Jordan, some of these assets may remain beyond the exercise at the request of the government of Jordan," Lt .Col. T.G. Taylor, a spokesman at the U.S. Central Command, told CNN.

The Patriot missiles were originally expected to be sent from their base at Ft. Bliss, Texas, but the senior official said they may simply be redeployed from Patriots already in the Middle East. Jordan does not face a Scud missile threat from Syria, but the deployment comes amid growing concern that some Syrian missiles are being shipped to Hezbollah and could be used to attack targets across the region.

In recent days, violence has spread to Lebanon, and Israeli forces have increased security along their northern border. The F-16s and air crews will train with Jordanian combat air forces amid growing pressure from some in Congress for the White House to support a no-fly zone over Syria.

Separately from the exercise, the United States is sending 200 military planners from the headquarters of the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss to Jordan to assist in long-term planning with Jordanian forces in case a chemical weapons crisis erupts, or if a wide scale humanitarian relief mission is ordered.

sending planes, missiles are waste of time; first you give them missiles then we train them on our system, and chances are they would still miss the targets we like to destroy, not very smart; I recommend we should fire the missiles from here and send them bills.

Jordan could maybe afford two Patriot batteries if it spent it's entire annual defense budget on them and nothing else, including wages for their army. A country as small as Jordan cannot begin to afford weapons of this class. Even if they were given the systems they could not afford to maintain them adequately.

Agreements were made with Jordan and some of them were made decades ago. If we do nothing else we must honor our commitments. Jordan honored their commitment to us. They also have many refugees from past struggles in the region. They are trying to keep the peace but they will need our backing to do so.

No country survives in a vacuum, We cannot build a big structure to hold this country so we had best make peace with our neighbors.

This is a strange posting cbr. One: You somehow think that these are fulfilling some committment made to the Jordanians? There is no indication that a dime has been paid to acquire them. In fact it states clearly how the weapons systems will get there, why they will get there and why they will remain there. None of this is because of past committments.
Second, While the Jordanians have kindly taken Syrian refugees, a Patriot missile battery or and F16 will do very littel to alleviate that situation, surely I need not elaborate.
Third, you might want to check your atlas but Jordan is not exactly a neighbour, and even so, they are an ally of the Americans in the region and therefore your country need not make peace with them.

    Dear CNN,

I don't care that this story is "first on CNN". I don't think most readers care at all either. We just want the news reported accurately.

Take your time. Fact check. You've made more than a few mistakes lately because you wanted the "scoop". We really don't need speed, there are other, disreputable blogs and news sites for that. What we want from CNN is consistent quality. Please remember that.

I believe you have readers and viewers that "fact check" all the time through reliable resources. Accuracy is more important to me as well, than hearing a "scoop" first.

The Jewish National Fund has paid former US President Bill Clinton USD 500,000 to deliver a speech at a ceremony in honor of the 90th birthday of Israeli President Shimon Peres. Clinton has received half a million dollars for his 45-minute speech at the Peres Academic Center in the northern Israeli city of Rehovot, Xinhua news agency reported.

Clinton is scheduled to visit Israel on June 18 for the fifth annual Presidential Conference.

The Peres Academic Center and the Jewish National Fund (JNF) have jointly sponsored the event.

The JNF, which presents itself as a benign pro-environment body, owned 13 percent of the total land in Israel by 2007.

The organization has in fact been at the center of the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the occupied territories since it was established in 1901.

David, if in fact you know any history of the region, you will be aware that the Palestinians, (not all of them) abandoned their land to allow a 'Clean sweep' for the coming ethnic cleansing of Jews by their Arab neighbours on several occasions throughout the sad history of the region. Part of the problem has been the Palestinians inability to recognise the basic inhumanity of attacking the Jews in the first place. Now they merely feel sorry for themselves. No self-awareness of their own part in their current situation seems to exist. The solution? Simple. Lay down all arms unilaterally. Stop killing Israeli people. Come to the table and begin talks. End it now. It's in their power.

If Russia was not supporting Syria the end would come very soon. So why Russian support? Two reasons, a very good market for weapons sales for Syria and its main supporter Iran. Second reason, Russia for centuries wanted a naval port in the Mediterranean Sea, Syria is the only country that allowed them and the port is being build as we speak. The good news, when it comes to foreign policy Russia never achieved anything worth mentioning other than keeping Cuba safe from U.S intervention. If Assad stays in power, that naval base will be a big problem for the West and all the neighboring countries. At this time in this country we are doing the tango, two steps forward, one back, at the end we will be involved up to our earlobes, we have no choice. Eastern Mediterranean Sea will not be surrendered to Russia, Syria, Iran troika. Finally there is the religious war of Sunni versus Shiites That is the Arabian Peninsula against Iran and majority in Iraq and of course Syria. Our interest is with the Arabian Peninsula for a whole lot of reasons besides oil. We do have one tiny bit problem here, Shiites don't kill us every time they have a chance, no it is the Sunnis. Lots of blood will be shed for a long time and as usual some will be ours.

    • Realist

The problem is that the Sunni's are Al-Qaeda. They believe that the killing of civilians is religiously sanctioned, and they ignore any aspect of religious scripture which might be interpreted as forbidding the murder of civilians and internecine fighting. Al-Qaeda also opposes man-made laws, and wants to replace them with a strict form of sharia law.

So do we let Al-Qaeda get the largest stock pike of Chemical and Biological weapons in the middle east Or Do we let Hezbollah get a hold of them? The governments of the U.S., Netherlands, Bahrain, France, U.K., Australia, Canada, and Israel classify Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. They are funded and trained by Iran and Assad.

If Al-Qaeda get hold of WMD they will use them on every one who do not pray like them.
If Hezbollah gets them they will start by using them on Israel. Right now they have thousands of missiles ready to launch at Israel. Israel's response will have to be brutal. Syrians, Hezbollah, Lebanon, Russian (Advisers), and Iranians will all be in the path.

Why? JUST... why? With everything crazy going on around this world who's bright idea is it to send anything from the USA to anyplace else in the world? THE SYRIANS DIDN"T WANT OUR HELP IN THE BEGINNING!!!! So.. let them deal or die by their own stupidity. Of course, i know, i know. The Arabs don't know how to rule themselves so it's a circus. I refuse to have one cent of american money, nor one drop of blood of an American soldier to be sent anywhere that isn't sovereign United States soil in defense or need of our own people. Enough is enough.

If we let the Arabs rule themselves freely , they would do just fine . We left Vietnam and guess what ? they were able to rule themselves. IF we leave South Korea , guesss what ? north and south will be one Korea . It is us that keep thumpin our nose in eveyrone else affair . As for Syria , I dont think we would like here in the US if Russia would step up a base here in Mexico and get 100 K angry americans supported by the russians and not expect the US government to stop them from destroying the country , or would we ?

I see the lobbysts are "Moving Forward" with the Admisitration to spend money that we don't have. Oh, wait! Seattle dumb down people say, if we have problems with paying for stuff, they will be more than happy to vote to tax us more because we don't pay enough taxex O.o

The Republicans forced the sequester on us. The Republicans are the ones who are refusing to compromise about anything, hoping to (and in some cases succeeding at) making Obama look incompetent. Fortunately, he's got Executive Orders to take care of the really important things, and the Republicans can make their rabble-rousing speeches to empty town hall meetings because they've been so obstreperous that no one cares what they say anymore. It's sad. I was a Republican for 65 years, but I can't do that anymore. 🙁

Jordan, unlike its immediate neighbors, does not possess significant energy resources. As of January 2013, the Oil & Gas Journal estimated Jordan's proved oil reserves at just 1 million barrels and its proved natural gas reserves at slightly more than 200 billion cubic feet (Bcf). Oil shale resources have the potential to increase Jordan's reserves significantly, but as of early 2013 such resources are not yet commercially viable.

Russia is just making some cash on arms sales... They want to make sure they make some money off this war before it ends. Also, who are Russia's real friends? Europe, the US and some of the former Soviet states are their closest friends. The only reason Russia isn't joining NATO is because they want to be considered equals with the US and not a subordinate like all the other NATO members. The US has been working for years to increase the influence of other NATO countries but in the end the US still calls the shots when times get really tough. Russia and China want to be equals – kinda makes sense doesn't it? And as far as the cyber spying and such – if you were Russia or China wouldn't you spy on the US? Think about it – you see those drones we have right – do you know that that tech is likely ten or more years out of date? I think most of us would love to know what technology the US military has – and all those secrets hiding in Area 51. So no – if things really got crazy Russia would not be lining up to attack the US...

Okay, and I'll type real slow so you catch on. It doesn't matter whether there is an enemy or not, the point of this is to re-raise (if I may use a poker analogy) their opening bet of putting Patriots in Syria. The Russians responded by deploying S300s in Syria. This a simple example of the on-going proxy war that has beeen waged between your country and Russia in the Middle East since Israel was formed. Next the Russians will raise once again with the Mig29 aircraft jsut ordered by Syria, and we'll see where it goes from there.
Anyways, clumsy metaphor aside, Jordan's security simply isn't what is on the mind of the US, this is just US/Russia poking each other.

Now , sequestration = surplus to spend money where lobbyst and speacial interests can make more money for the country, I mean themselves. 20% cut from your paycheck is painful for you and spending for the politiicians. You (not you specific, general speaking) voted for this Administration and now you get what you deserve. Politicians, especially liberals, always says they care for the people. They show us how they care by conducting corruptions and sweep it under the carpet, furloughs and higher taxes.

Because their lack of trustworthiness makes them most likely to provide the reader with shock-value information, and that’s what the reader really wants. The reader wants to be entertained, even if the news is a lie.

This is what the Reagan Administration did in Iraq in the 1980s... supplied Saddam Hussein with all manner of weaponry, including chemical and biological weapons. The same administration also heaped money, resources, weapons and military advice to the warlords (al Qaeda) in Afghanistan during the same time period.

Three wars resulted from all that "generosity"... costing millions of innocent lives, the wholesale irradiation of large areas for billions of years, raping, looting, pillaging and plundering of those countries, and $trillions of the US up in smoke.

When are they planning a war against Jordan?

King Abdullah II is not Saddam Hussein. He cultivates an aura of justice and morality. He wants to cast himself as a western-educated, modern man. He is, however, still a monarch. And like all monarchs (those with real power, at least), he is likely corrupted and has done some shady things. He is, nonetheless, not Saddam.

We have to do this to contain the mayhem and protect allies Jordan and Israel. Russia may just want to prop up its ally Syria and maintain its access to Syria's deep water ports because they don't have many great alternative ports in the Mediterranean. But Iran wants to set flame to the entire region with divisive and protracted wars between Shiites and Sunnis. Unless there is a very strong deterrent on Syria's border with Jordan, the violence will soon spill over. In fact, its almost a miracle that Jordan has not burst into flames yet – just look at Lebanon...

Turks are not Arabs, but I think that you already know that. Turkey having such advanced weaponry is better than your country having it. When was the last time you've heard of Turks attacking another country prematurely, let alone invading one and coming up with bogus reasons? Turkey is the remnant of the world's last major empire that ruled tens of nations for half a millenium before your adventurist nation started its existence of a couple centuries. You think that you are better, you are brought up and brainwashed that way, but think before criticizing and badmouthing since you are not at all in a position to do so.

After oppressing Kurds in Turkey for generations, Turks used their warplanes, missiles and artillery to strike at Kurds inside Iraq many times, without any declaration of war against Iraq. Admittedly not quite an "invasion" but Turkey is not as peaceful, innocent and just as you try to make it appear to be.

        June 3, 2013 at 3:57 pm |
      • Dianne

Robsssss: If you can see Al Qaeda's war against US as legitimate, only then you can look at the Kurdish terrorism against Turkey in the same fashion. Otherwise it's your double standards at play as a hypocrite. It is this same Turkey that saved Kurds from collectively getting gassed under Saddam regime by providing for the no-fly zone. While the Kurds in the area all owe their lives to Turkey, how can you even slightly accuse Turks of committing crimes and atrocities against them? There will always be your like and there will always be claims and accusations like the ones you are twisting or entirely fabricating, it's not at all surprising, but there will also be responses like this to prevent you from affecting clueless third parties.

This Turkey you are talking about had a Kurdish prime minister in the 80s when talking about having a black or hispanic leader in the United States would not be possible except perhaps in Hollywood imagination. You do not know what you are talking about, you are clueless about the Turkish reality, yet you do not hesitate to post with the brainwashing you have been receiving and the propaganda you have been subject to. That is, of course, unless you are a member of PKK – the Kurdish terrorist group recognized as such by EU and the US.

    • Marek

Turks have a long history, many times that of yours during which they gained vast amount of experience, and they do not resort to violence unless necessary despite being a major regional power. This is a country that actually knows what a war is, like most European nations. And it's not sipping your coffee not even slightly affected and watching TV as your troops kill innocent people on the other side of the world, while you call them all terrorists and support your troops. Turks have been provoked by their neighbours repeatedly in the last few decades alone, yet they have been calm and they tried to resolve issues politically and through dialogue – not because they aren't capable but because they are experienced, mature, and they choose to do so. As a member of a country that attacked so many others in the near history and couldn't justify it in the minds of majority of the world except for some of its clueless population that it shapes the opinions through media, you should not for a moment think that you have the quality to have such weaponry and Turks don't.

Hundreds of thousands (millions) of people die in the process of making powerful families more wealthy and powerful, as they use religion and idealogy to mobilize the condemned into willing participation. Does anyone realize that if US did not fight terrorists and or help countries that are trying to, the world would be a lot worse than it is.
Yes US doesn't have the money to spend on helping others but they must.
It goes back to post WWII -if US hadn't helped rebuild Western Europe and be the one standing up to USSR, Europe wouldn't be US's third largest trading partner today. So if they don't help countries today in fighting terrorist and maintaining overseas armies eventually areas like Syria, North Korea, and Iran will spill out of control and there will be direct attacks on US mainland. By helping others and maintaining troops around the world, in the main they are preventing this. Always remember terrorists and dictators are not rational people – they don't care if innocents get killed.

Your leaving out the grassroots level of support America earned after WW2 in Europe. This is by far the most important reason it worked out that way. These other countries like Palestine, Israel, China, Egypt, Libyia, Afghanistan, Iraq do not have a natural grass roots support for anything American. Yes I did it I included one of our biggest allies in that list because Israel is so self centered they would throw America under the bus in a heart beat if they didnt need us so badly.

I havent seen more ignorance of people who claim that if it was not for US the world would not be as safe it is. If US did not lead the efforts to supply arms to people... freedom would be in jeopardy. Flip that thought around and apply it to US. If there were more guns in US.. US citizens would be much safer? Now that we agree on that ignorance let us stop fooling ourselves. The more arms we supply any region the more fighting and killing can ensue as a result of it. But we are not arming the bad guys you say!! How good are we and our acts if they ultimately result in more killing and destruction of life and property? The Military Industrial Complex must earn revenue. Russians have similar goals.

Right now the US-Israeli goal is to arm both sides in Muslim countries that have strife.. so they can kill themselves and that reduces their burden to go and kill more Muslims. It also prevents acts like Boston Bombing and Meat Cleaver jobs as witnessed in London. What we are gleeful about will soon come to bite us... because we supplied them arms to kill each other. We will ultimately bear the brunt of it.

I suggest we do not supply any arms to Middle East. However we should attack those arm shipments that are sent to Middle East by other nations. This will give us a higher moral ground when we discuss peace.

Wrong. America NEVER helps other countries. We ONLY invade to take their resources.

America will support any bad or good guys that benefit our pocketbooks. We gladly sell chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein. We gladly arm right wing facist murdering dictators (Noriego, Hussein, the Shah, the Bin Laden family). We gladly train folks that then come and attack us, such as our former CIA agent Osama Bin Laden.

The American Military Industrial Complex is much more powerful than any President, and their entire purpose is to make a lot of money for their executives.

America has NEVER gone into anoother nation for any reason except to make a lot of money for their executives.

Obama hasnt been perfect by any strecht of the imagination but can any of you imagine a Ryan or a Rand in the WH? America would be at war instantly, the number of terrorist organizations both domestic and international would triple. Obama is not doing a bad job considering the hate and foot dragging he has had to put up with from our Tea Party Congress members and there bozo supporters. The Tea Party supporters should be ashamed of how they are defiling the American dream and defanging diplomacy. Thank you for one of the few intelligent replies here, concernedforliberty. I'm not sure how many people realize how much we (the USA) have invested overseas to protect our assests there. I, for one can not begin to be an armchair/PC political specialist. There is just too much to know and understand. I was brought up to respect our President whether Dem or Rep. My parents were depression kids. If it were so simple on the domestic side to fix the job situation, to keep our tax money here, I think we would have done that by now. I believe it is slowing improving. Not as fast as people want... but it is happening. Not only have we invested here... we have invested all over this world. We are a very complex world and political dealings are not my favorite bag. I'm not part of the "hater groups or let's blame the President . I'm a hard worker and come from hard working parents. I'm a proud American. I love my country and I cherish our freedoms. If I was told I had to fight for my nation, I would. I'm too old now, but I've always thought this, even as a young woman. I work in a professional building. I make my own living. I've also lived in Israel for 6 months back in 1980. I wanted to see what it would be like and learn about another culture. I'm not Jewish... just a small town girl form Washington State. I've stepped out of my comfort zone and learned about another nation. Now I've got lifetime friends overseas. I think a lot of us become too comfortable behind our PCs and spew out so much hate that they forget to look at the big picture. Our own personal situations can be most engulfing, especially if we have low paying jobs, health issues and feel abandoned. Our own culture is slowly changing. Some of us can't keep up with technology. Some are so afraid and angry they vent, just to vent. It's all about our own perspective and situation. Because we live in the USA we have the freedom to call our President names and accuse him of being evil. I find that petty. That's my humble opinion that I feel I need to say now and then. Now I'll probably be called names. Ha! Take care, folks. Count your blessings... if you think you have any.

Finally! What is our government doing? Waiting till all 22 million Syrians are dead till we do something about it. I wish we intervened earlier. Bashar al-Assad, the illigimenate dictator in Syria has murdered 120,000+ innocent Syrians, and raped, tortured, and detained, hundreds of thousands of more according to the UN backed Syrian observatory for Human Rights, also refered to as the SOHR. Whether you are in favor of a Humanitirain intervention or not, we (USA) have invested trillions into the Middle East in the last several decades. Letting the ME, and our interests and allies become destablized by some illigimate, un elected tyrant like Bashar al-Assad is insanity on our behalf. While I am a democrat, I do support Humanitrian interventions like that in Syria, Bosnia, Kosovo and others.

Lets pick a war War #1: The Syrian civil war

War #2: The Middle East war of religion between Sunni and Shi'ite sects

War #3: The proxy war about energy
Syria is a battleground for a conflict between two wealthy energy nations: Russia with allies and Qatar, the world's largest LNG exporter with its allies.
This week, the EU ended their embargo on arms sales to Syria's rebels this week, an action fiercely criticized by Russia.
War #4: The war within the war
The neighborhood rightly worries that Syria's civil war will become a full-blown Shia-Sunni religious war or full-blown proxy war that contaminates the region or brings in other big players.

It sure does. And what you think is reflected in your vote. Otherwise we expect our leaders to do what is right for the country.

Since the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, the affairs of our nation and the activities of our politicians (both parties) have been substantially driven by lobbyists.

        How sad is that!

the best thing we can do is train our kids to be better politicians and leaders so we can break the system wide open then let them be voted in a run the country the right way

Why wait that long. Why not run for a government office yourself? It would be 30 years give or take before our kids would have a chance to clean up what we are screwing up day after day.

Can anyone please explain to me why the London butchers were only covered for like one day? How do two guys slaughter a British Soldier in broad daylight, with tons of witnesses and these news agencies bury the story? What in the world?

Buried? I think I've seen an article about nearly every day since it happened on this and many other news sites. I grew tired of seeing those bloody hands every time I clicked on a site.

You must have been living under a rock these past couple of weeks or something. There was plenty of coverage of that story...and the EDL protests/push for civil war afterwards. There was coverage of about a dozen arrests in connection with the case. What more do you want? Nukes? We've already been dropping ordnance and killing people in hostile "Islamic countries" nonstop for decades now.

Alex Alex Alex ... get over the 1 (ONE?) dead British soldier. This soldier slaughtered Arabs during war, and Arabs fought back and killed him.

We call this war. People die. I do not have ONE problem with the Arab soldiers fighting for their side.

War folks. People die. So stop whining about 3 (THREE?) dead runners in Boston, or 1 (ONE?) dead soldier in Britain. We kill that many of our enemies EVERY DAY .... get over it.

When is the USA going to wake up and stop spending money we don't have? Einstein once said... "I don't know what we use to fight this war but the next will be with Sticks & Stones".

Einstein was referring to nuclear warfare. I don't know why you are trying to link nuclear war with deficit spending.

      Actually, Einstein said:

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”

Citing Einstein doesn't make you smart. Less so when you cite him incorrectly and out of context.
