Army suspends general due to allegations of misconduct

The Army has suspended the top general at Fort Jackson in South Carolina due to allegations of adultery and assault, an Army spokesman says.
Brig. Gen. Bryan Roberts was relieved of his duties Tuesday as commanding general of the Army training center and Fort Jackson while the allegations are being investigated, said spokesman Harvey Perritt of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command.
Roberts was suspended by Gen. Robert Cone, head of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command.
Fort Jackson, where Roberts was the senior commander, is where most new Army recruits go through basic training, which includes training about sexual assault prevention.
This is the latest in a series of cases involving senior military officers accused of misconduct and comes at a time when President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel have suggested a sexual assault crisis is risking the military's ability to conduct its mission.

As a former Ranger and officer in the military it grieves me to see the recent spate of assault incidents. However, the U.S. military is a cadre of professionals who will police themselves, as the Commander of TRADOC has initiated with the relief of Gen Roberts. Be assured, those guilty of abuse rarely get off with minimal penalty in the military. We should be grateful to live in a country where abuse is brought to light and the guilty are punished.

Our Army has endured 11 years of war and only 1% of Americans can call themselves veterans. Most career Soldiers had been deployed about half that time and divorces are common. Some hardly know their kids. Still, we enforce much higher ethical standards than the civilian population, the Congress, and a good portion of the clergy. However, we are worn out and it shows – these sort of moral and ethical violations are symptoms. As we hear politicians calling for intervention in civil wars across the globe we should either reinstate the military draft (with no exceptions for gender or college) or tell those hawks to STFU.
this is not news...this is the mentality that continues to exist within the military industrial complex. Rather than dealing with these individuals and sending a clear message, by discharging and prosecutiing these people, the military leadership continues to enforce more training videos and classes, which are obviously ineffective. These folks should not allowed to retire, they need to be discharged. It appears that these folks will continue to engage in this type of behavior until there is some significant cost, money will usually do it. Not only should these individuals be penalized, but also the other indivduals who are complicit in creating the type of environment that allows this type of behavior to persist...these are the leaders who fail to take immediate action as well as other individuals who create the type of environment that not only fosters this type of environment, but sometimes even creates it. If these people are the military's best and brightest, remedial training is obviously not the answer. The next step needs to be a discharge, regardless of grade.
This is the reason good soldiers want to get the blank out. Poor leaders who think they can do what ever they want. Unfortunately nothing will happen cause the people at the top will just slap him on the hand and send him to a desk job somewhere.
All right I'll agree with the statement to a point but add some good soldiers that think they're good get out and decide to blame the military for their own failures instead of taking personal responsibility.

The military was screwed up when President Obama took over from GWB. After two concurrent wars, one totally unnecessary, which put the US deeply in debt he can only reduce spending money the US doesn't have, he has no other option. The moral problems was created by rushing women into military position they were not suited for. Mixing men and women in the military is a bad idea.

Obama has nothing to do with what these Officers are doing in the Military. When Bush was in the White House, it was worst. But the Leadership from the top, Generals that is must start doing the right thing, and LEAD.
I've been retired for about two years – after 34 years of active duty. President Obama was clearly the top CINC I served under throughout that time period – with George H.W. Bush coming in second and Bill Clinton third. The President listens to his Joint Chiefs, leverages technology to save Soldier's lives, and uses intelligence data with widsom and maturity. George W. Bush was a puppet to a corporate sleezeball and fellow draft-dodger Dick Cheney. "W" and Cheney should be in prison for what they did to our military – starting the Iraq War with purposefully false intelligence and no exit strategy. Over 4,500 Service-members died after Bush & Cheney declared "Mission Accomplished".

I served with him and would follow him still. He and his beautiful wife both served with distinction and were both Colonels when I served with him. If he has had a moral failure (and that has to remain IF until the investigation is over) then he should be dealt with severely. His pension and benefits for his service should only be reduced as much as Bill Clinton's were. His benefits are already being reduced by the current administration – especially the health care, just ask a retiree.
You can still follow this guy a loss leader. His wife probably won't even follow him anymore considering what happened.
But to other fellow soldiers under his command, they definitely abandon him or disrespect him because his lack of character. In the end, his fellow soldiers may bully and tease him as the result. A weakened leader is a death knell to his fellow troops.
Wow there are a lot of wild comment and conjecture on the comments based on the spare details given. Was he on the job when this "assault" took place? Was it with the woman he is accused of having an affair with? Many, many civilians have affairs without it ending their careers. Many get in fights both at work and outside of work as well. The only objective I can see from publishing this is to convict him in the court of public opinion before any real details emerge or is this just one journalist attempt to paint the whole military in a negative light by starting a story but not providing enough details for any logical person to make a conclusion other than the piece was published before it had value.
Military Personel ar ALWAYS on duty. Both in and out of uniform.
The UCMJ, by which all military personnel must abide is very different from laws which govern civilian life. In the military, adultery is a crime. I have seen Seargent Majors (the highet enlisted rank in the USMC) reduced to the rank of corporal for having relations outside of their marriage. Military life and civilian life are two very different things.
Civilian DoD employees are not covered by the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The military has gotten more and more political over the years, as evidenced by General Petraeus and tend to forget they are under the UCMJ and moral values matter under the UMCJ.
The military, especially officers, especially SENIOR officers are supposed to lead by example. They are supposed to be beyond reproach. Not perfect, but setting an example for others to follow. Modern day "knights". When a knight abuses his authority, defies morality and arrogantly let's his arrogance and the inability to keep it in his pants get in the way, as many of them do these days, there is no wonder why we have a culture of fear and intimidation in the military. Female enlisted and officers both in fear of who is going to hurt them next. All the while, we as taxpayers, pay for these deviants to wear the uniform. THAT is what this is about.

The Army has a terrible leadership problem with some of the General Officers. This individual should be court martialed, and demoted if he in fact committed the offenses that he is charged with. The Senior Leadership in all the Services are dealing with incompetent poor Senior Leaders. There is definitely a leadership problem primarily at the General Officer level in the Army, (Perfumed Princes). No one in the Senior Ranks wants to relieve General Officers. However, in Corporate America in which all the Generals want to mimic, something like this would be handled in one day. He would be fired, and told not to come back to work. Unfortunately that cannot happen that quickly in the military. The Senior leadership needs to straighten this out. This is what our young men and women look up to in the Services. Poor leadership, poor ethics, incompetence.
Seems to be a lot of unwritten rules in Military society. Military does promote separation of rank which is understandable, abuse of rank has always been a problem. When I mean abuse, I mean from little things no one pays attention to, to larger things people turn a blind eye to. I would like to wait to see the facts on this particular problem.
This should have been kept under wraps until the facts could be proven then put the story out.

Fort Jackson is the worst coed BCT. I was there in last fall (I became ill/injured and was discharged). That boot camp has MAJOR issues in its chain of command- stuff happened to recruits that should never have happened.

This is not some new behavior by some in the military. There have been problems for years but no one addressed this behavior. It was overlooked so often. Times have changed and until every member of the military realizes that his behavior will not be tolerated there will be accusations and there will be commanders and others who will be relieved of their duties.
How we treat each other does reflect is important Our allies and friends will be watching and we have the ability to change the way we command our troops and treat our troops every day. We need each other every day or we will not be successful in our missions.
