Kerry announces more aid to Syria

By Jill Dougherty

Meeting in Rome with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, Secretary of State John Kerry announced Thursday that the United States would provide an additional $100 million in humanitarian assistance for refugees fleeing the fighting in Syria, bringing the total amount of aid to $510 million.

Kerry also said that he is working to bring all parties together to create a transitional government and that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would not be part of that government.

Jordan, which is being inundated by a wave of Syrian refugees, will receive nearly $43 million, which will support United Nations humanitarian programs in the region.

Kerry said the fourth-largest "city" in Jordan today is a tent city filled with Syrians fleeing their country, adding that "Jordan feels the impact of what is happening more than any other country."

The foreign minister gave a bleak assessment, saying the 525,000 refugees make up 10% of Jordan's population. He said the number is expected to increase to 20% or 25% by year's end, and then to 40% of the population by the middle of 2014. "No country can cope with the numbers that are as huge as I described," he said.

The minister said he was "encouraged" by Kerry's meetings in Moscow this week, at which the U.S. and Russia agreed to push for an international conference on Syria that would possibly be held by the end of the month and include, for the first time, representatives of the Syrian government as well as the opposition fighting that government.

Judeh said he was leaving Rome for meetings in Moscow.

Kerry said he had asked Robert Ford, the U.S. ambassador to Syria, to travel to Istanbul to confer with opposition leaders. He said that on Wednesday, he discussed the plan for the conference by phone with the foreign ministers of most of the countries involved in trying to find a political solution, as well as with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

"There's a very positive response and very strong desire to move to this conference," he said, "and to at least exhaust the possibilities of finding a political way forward."

Well peachy. All I read about our country is how much in debt we are and how funding for pertinent programs for education, women & children have been cut. Congress voted a raise for themselves while "furlows" were being handed out to lower echelon government employees. There's something wrong with the situation when Americans in America are in need of assistance while we send millions to Syria. Ridiculous. Syria will become another Iraq or Afghanistan and everyone will blame President Obama. STOP sending money to other countries when our country needs it!

Why in the World is the Obama Administrating giving aid to the Rebels/Terrorists in Syria ? It is being reported that members of the Free Syrian Army are defecting to the Nusra Front that is an affiliate of AL Quada. No aid at all should be given to the Syrian Rebels/Terrorists.

@massoud,so are you backing Assads plans of basicly wiping out his whole country, even with plans of genecide or are you one that stands there not knowing what team to root for...I myself are against foriegn aid altogether because it never goes to the populus its intended for just the tyrants that rule the country..And if these rebels are guilty of using serin gas they're as bad as their maniacal dictator in Assad and shouldn't be given anything as well!!Just like a poster wrote the other day rebels today are the terrorists of tommorrow, remember Afghanistans rebels that Charlie Wilson sold weapons to in the 80s with Reagans blessing that are now being used against us,nice return on our investments ha guys coming back to haunt us!!

@ Retard Pete You really are a bottom feeder in life, and I do apologize to people who are retarded because I mean no disrespect to you, just to Pete. Petard if I were in a fight with a Grizzly Bear I would want You Petard to help the Grizzly Bear because Petard you are so worthless and inept and weak it would increase my chances of defeating the Grizzly Bear if you Petard were assisting the Grizzly Bear. I doubt Petard you understand metaphors so this will probably fly over Your head that is covering your dead brain that has so few brain cells remaining.

It boggles my mind knowing the serious consequences of Syria and what it involves. You have the Soviet Union and Iran propping up a dictator who has killed over 100 thousand of its own citizens and Iran supporting Hezbollah as pawns to do their bidding in order to forment unrest and attack Israel. IRAN is supporting the Muslem Brotherhood and terrorists attacks in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel. IRAN supported terrorist attacks and still does in IRAQ.
They have been training and supporting terrorism and supplying Weapons that have killed more innocent civilians in the middle East than anyone in the History of the World. Their dream is for Radical fundamental Islamist Governments to control the whole middle east with the help of the Soviet Union and the Soviet Union wants to control all the Oil in the middle East and they have been planning this for 15 years. But our news agencies are more interested in scandals and political witch hunts instead of informing the world of the truth our Government knows, but no one wants to face the truth. No one wants to deal with the problem because it could effect a recovering world Economy that is too fragile to handle an interuption of the worlds oil supplies.

Here we go again the pro Islamist Jehadist gave money to the Taliban, later our enemies, the same people gave and give over 400 millions to the Muslim Brotherhood that is persecuting Christians , killing and burning their churches not to mention that they raped 3 western reporters in public.
We gave millions and aid to Libyian Al Queada that the first thing they did was to torture and kill any one that was not radical and force Sharia Law on all and to top it they killed Americans while Mrs Clinton a rabid pro Islam refuse protection.
Now we give millions to Syrian Jehadists that have kidnapped Orthodox Bishops, burned churches and have armed women and children that enjoy taking photos of themselves with heads of captured enemies and the ONU has found they are using nerve gas.
Are we idiots? Or Anti Americans are running the show?

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

is the Middle Eastern mindset actually hardwired AGAINST democracy? Is any attempt at democratizing the area an exercise in futility? Should we just go with the tried and true policy of backing whichever strongman best keeps peace in the area.

Heres an extreme radical idea. Why not everyone in the middle east put away weapons for a 6 month trial period and see what happens.Children will play in the streets, Mothers could quit worrying.Fathers could enjoy their familys.Just a radical thought!

CNN Breaking News- You failed to report the Benghazi Hearings where the #2 Libyan Diplomat Hicks testified before Congress yesterday that his attempt to send special ops forces from Tripoli were denied and that he was shocked to hear Susan Rice go on 5 Sunday political talk shows to lie to the American public about what caused the tragic murders of Ambassador Stevens and three of his counterparts in Libya. Hicks was also demoted to a desk job for whistleblowing about the botched security detail botched sending of reinforcements and the botched coverup by this corrupt Administration shame on Hillary Clinton who headed the State Department and shame on Obama for having his administration bully whistleblowers like Hicks and others who want the truth to be known about what really happened in Benghazi, Libya.

Gee whiz, more money for that riff raft trying to overthrow the Assad regime in Syria and nothing for our schools, police, libraries, fire dept, etc.! This is how Washington does business and always will as long as these right-wing fanatics keep on getting elected over and over again!

You are correct. We are now throwing more borrowed money (China, Social Security Trust fund) and newly printed money into a hell hole where they would just as soon kill our troops as accept our aid. Let us demand that our money stay at home and support Americans in need! Let's correct our debt situation, maintain Social Security and MediCare.
