President Obama: Gitmo should be closed

(CNN) - President Barack Obama said Tuesday he continues to believe the United States should close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"I think it's critical for us to understand Guantanamo is not necessary to keep America safe, it's expensive, it's inefficient, it hurts us in terms of international standing, it lessens cooperation with our allies in counter-terrorism efforts. ... It needs to be closed."

Obama vowed to close the prison when he first came into office, but Congress blocked him from doing so.

Dozens of prisoners at that detention camp are currently on their tenth week of a hunger strike.

U.S. authorities said last week that 84 – half of the prisoners – were not eating.

Carlos Warner, a public defender who represents 11 of the detainees, told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour last week that multiple sources told him the number was actually higher.

Another idiotic comment above from another lame brained Tea Partier. With this kind of stupidity, no wonder this country's in so much trouble! Then again, these ignoramuses like the one above also have a right to their opinion too. I do believe in free speech and no censorship but nonetheless, some of my posts do get censored since someone doesn't like what I posted.

Will the President pardon all the terrorists in Guantanamo Bay at the end of his presidency?

Let me be clear we heard “I don't want these individuals to die,”

Did he really mean? I don't want these terrorists to die, even though when they're released they go back to terrorism to kill Americans.

Why is it that American terrorists are put to death and jihad terrorists are released so they can continue to kill Americans?

President Obama this is an easy one. Transfer all inmates to Maricopa County Jail with Sheriff Joe. They will be probably want to sign up for another hitch in Gitmo. What else you got? I'll fix it.

Lots of opinions both ways on this, for my two cents, it is an American base, do with it what you will. As for the prisoners, there is no love here. Put them on a leaky boat and cast them into the wild blue yonder. If they sink their not witches, if they float they are witches and the boat should be sent to the bottom. Just stop providing them with food and health care there are enough American who can't afford either. Just an enormous waste of money. At least if they were put in a prison on the mainland, the cost of everything would go down saving the government millions of dollars. Besides, in a normal prison they could make lots of new friends. Those friends would deal with the problem, and any new friends should be dealt with the same way. Justice is supposed to be blind anyways.

It's interesting that they still blame Bush for so much as well as the House & Senate for blocking things...but don't acknowledge the first two years of obamas presidency..;..where they did so much to ruin this country but didn't help him follow his promises on Gitmo, balancing the budget and so much else. Meanwhile...his crimes are on the traitorus and you don't even go there. Shame on all of you for screaming your crud and ignoring the rest of the truth.

I take it you've recently purchased yourself a season pass to Bush's presidential library.

Yes Bush still deserves blame. His decision to go to war in Iraq was a costly one in both monetary terms and in the lives of those who have been lost. All on a false pretense. His use of torture and his denial of due process to those in US custody exemplifies the worst and most dangerous qualities in a leader.

But not only are such actions more suited to a dictator, they highlight the gross hypocrisy of American policy, and it is this hypocrisy that is a significant source of anti-Americanism in the world. They do not "hate our freedom". Poll after poll shows people around the world tend to favour American culture and American ideals. What they hate is the hypocrisy and the callous disregard that Americans display towards any life that isn't western. The "collateral damage" that the US inflicts on other nations far outstrips anything terrorists have ever inflicted on the American public. But for large portions of the American public these people rate somewhere beneath a human being because they are different and their suffering is out of sight, and therefore out of mind.

America was once the greatest country in the world. But nowadays it does less to demonstrate its greatness and instead merely assumes its own superiority and disparages anyone who questions US policy as "unAmerican". This arrogance is arguably one of its greatest shortcomings and undermines a country that otherwise has enjoyed a truly exceptional place in history.

There have been four hundred plus trials in federal courts with decisions and only four military tribunals of the "combatants" .. some released back to their countries and others in supermax prisons that for the rest of their lives might see the light of day for one hour for the rest of their lives. Which of these two situations is considered American and shows the humanity we've always had. Some of these people are simply neighbors of someone that might have been seen doing something. Ridiculous. It's a scab on the name of our fine country.

The bottom line here is that this infamous base in Cuba needs to shut down once and for all! As an American, knowing what goes on inside that base with those political prisoners and I do say "political" since most of them done anything except to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, makes me sick to my stomach. Conveniently ignoring that closing Guantanamo was prohibited by Congress. So far, every proposed location for these prisoners on US soil has run into a buzz saw of opposition and no one in Congress is willing to allow a prison to be opened for these prisoners in the US. How about dealing with the truth? Is that too much to ask?

Obama does whatever will make him look good in the public eye. Close Gitmo but let the drone strikes continue to kill civilians in the Middle East. Boots on the ground would be less expensive, true it would put American soldiers at risk, but since when are American lives more valuable than Afghani civilian lives? Isn't this the premise for closing Gitmo? Cost, embarrassment? Too bad CNN doesn't provide more coverage on drone strikes that take innocent lives. We have to look for other sources of news that reveal that truth. Obama is a hypocrite and a coward....that's why he can't get anything done.

I served in the USMC 89-93. My brother is still active (E-6) and has served 4 tours in Afghanistan. My dad was Navy, uncle AF – both Vietnam, and my 17 year old son plans to enlist (USMC) after graduation. I, and many just like me, would gladly CARESS the target if a drone strike meant civilians would be killed – especially women and children. That's what we do, it's what we live for. I like seeing the bad guys blown up as much as the next person...NOT women and children and that is exactly what our drone strikes have done. But sure, let's close Gitmo because the 3 squares a day, warm beds, and medical attention these TERRORISTS receive is just so cruel and inhumane, right??

Obama has a zero understanding of strategy and constantly caves to international will – even to the point of excluding the half of American opinion that doesn't agree with his own. His policies divide the country. His inability to react to global situations is an embarrassment. He may be a good Senator, have other relevant skills to offer – but just because he got voted into office does not make him a good leader. Obama is a horrible leader that knows only how to divide.

Your assumption that I am Rep is dead wrong. I don't vote party lines, I vote for the best candidate and Obama sure as sh!t ain't it. This is about Obama. Live in the past if you want but check your facts. The Iran contra thing was Col. Ollie North. Selling arms to Iranian rebels was a mistake, but I'm pretty sure Col North has earned your respect since he and others like him are the reason you can play armchair general and sound off your own distorted version of history, freely, without fear of reprisal. Rep or Dem, American foreign policy since WWII – for the most part – sucks. Obama swoops in with "room to condemn", then: gives F16s and tanks to Egypt, supports Syrian rebels, and STILL uses drones to achieve U.S. military objectives with disregard to collateral damage. Then he wants to close Gitmo – WHY? A purely political agenda to look good for the world. Obama's a performer. The man you back is spineless, ignorant, and hypocritical...nothing more than a politician. At least Regan and the Bush's had the balls and convictions to act decisively. Like you could do better. And Clinton's budget success is directly tied to free trade with China. A deal that killed the U.S. 7 years after it was made. Clinton made a deal with the Chinese that strengthened their military, made them a global player, drove U.S. prices on natural resources and building materials through the roof, which caused the U.S. and global economy to collapse. Research the "Clinton Vision" before you reply. Maybe then your posts might have a shred of intelligence to them.

Pete, the 111th Congress, which was in place for President Obama's first two years in office, including during when he attempted to close "GITMO" was dominated by the Democrat Party in both chambers (Senate and House of Representatives). So, in essence, the Democrat-controlled Congress did not allow President Obama to close "GITMO".

Is not Barack Obama as President Supreme Leader and Commander of Our Hallowed Armed Forces? As such, can he not say, "Minions, abandon this base and return to the mainland at once?"

Pete, I was stating a verifiable historical fact. If you wish to contest it, then offer some verifiable evidence that the 111th Congress stopped the closing of Guantanamo's Detention Facility via a Republican-led filibuster. The National Defense Authorization Act of 2011 (PL 111-383) – enacted by Congress – passed with a vote (NOT a "filibuster") record of 187 DEMOCRATS and 154 REPUBLICANS (i.e., "bi-partisan") voting "yea". That's a full 79% of the House at that time. The measure was introduced by Representative Ike Skelton... a DEMOCRAT. These are just facts. Not Fox, not MSNBC, not CNN. Just a matter of Congressional record. You can dispute them all day long. But, they are what they are.

@ND,if you're so smart who's going to accept these supposid terrorists taken prisoner mostly under Bushs watch and he did open Gitmo didn't he in 2002!!Nobody will take them and reps like Graham,Issa and others that think they're real military JAG lawyers are always caught barking up the wrong tree most times don't they fighting any prisoners moves or objecting the closure of Gitmo as well because they keep reinterating that these supposid terrorists will come back and will they..And posters out there after all the torture like waterboardings and mistreatment to these prisoners at Gitmo none of whom would be there if Bushs war in Iraq,Afghanistan hadn't begun and you wonder why our people who are being held captive get anything less as those at Gitmo as someone else's prisoner, you tell me and they're called animals by us !!We as Americans started this mess and we as Americans should go out and fix it and believe me its not Pres.Obamas fault ,its ours for listening to that liar in Bush and believing in his story of WMDs, they in Bush,Cheney should hang in the Hague for it as well as murderers!!

@Pete. I can only reply to you in terms of facts; not emotion and conjecture. I hope that some day you find the answers to all your questions, or concerns. But, I highly doubt that anyone will be able to answer them here to your satisfaction. Have a great day.

@ND,most of my statements here are facts and can be backed up and not as conjecture..Yes I get emotional sometimes because ignorence on these sites run deep and people seem to have a problem like republicans, others in sticking their feet in their mouths if you know what I mean..And you too have a great day yourself sir!And remember we can only play the cards we are dealt with right and after Pres.Obama took office you can't argue his hand sucked being his cards dealt from Bush!!

It would have been nice if CNN had reported a little more detail on how Congress blocked the closing actions.

It's about time! Unfortunately, this should have been done four years ago or better yet, never to have been opened in the first place! The people who run it need to be indicted and taken to the I.C.C but won't, since this body has no moral principles!

Good posting, Joseph. Gitmo has been nothing but a national disgrace to say the least. Yes Joseph, by torturing these political prisoners, their tormentors do need to be brought to justice but won't, unfortunately. As JFK once said, life is not fair!

@Patrick,that's why 150 countries but us have indictments for human rights violations against Bush,Cheney..These countries know who murderers are ,we only house Bush,Cheney here from them that's all..We're just as guilty as they not seeing what others do and you wonder why terrorists treat American prisoners that way, think about it bud!!
