No end in sight for North Korea tensions

By Chris Lawrence

While North Korea continues to elevate threats against the United States and its allies, the Pentagon has not seen anything "out of the ordinary" around key missile sites, a defense official told CNN on Friday.

But the heightened rhetoric over nuclear attacks, so far unmatched by any actual military moves, has no foreseeable endgame, a second defense official said.

"This could go on for a while, and we could see variations of the rhetoric," the second official said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has approved a plan to put rockets on standby to fire at U.S. targets, including the American mainland and military bases in the Pacific and in South Korea, state media reported Thursday.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency on Friday cited South Korean military sources who said there was "brisk activity" by the North around missile sites.

But the second defense official told CNN that North Korea often carries out military exercises of its own around the same time that joint exercises are conducted by the United States and South Korean forces.

U.S. Joint Chiefs Chairman Martin Dempsey also suggested the activity the United States was observing was not out of the ordinary.

"There have been some artillery movements, but nothing other than what's consistent with their historic patterns and training," Dempsey said at a news conference on Thursday.

Still, the United States flew two stealth B-2 bombers near North Korea as part of military exercises on Thursday, viewed as demonstration of resolve to defend its allies and interests.

There were "intense discussions" inside the Pentagon and with the White House before the decision was made to fly the radar-evading planes over the Korean Peninsula, the second defense official said.

The B-2 requires a high level of approval before being deployed.

The official said the deliberations "went all the way up to the senior levels of the National Security Council" before Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel signed the order, the official said.

There was a "full range of options considered" before deciding to fly the B-2, according to the official.

"This was a well thought through decision. Everything about that flight was intentional: From the time of day, to the altitude, the planes that accompanied the B-2s and where it specifically flew."

The official said the B2 flew over Osan Air Base, about 50 miles south of the Demilitarized Zone and North Korean border.

"It's a unique, quite visible signal," the official said. "A message of reinforcement to our allies that the U.S. is open to bringing all assets to support them."

While clearly a message to North Korea that "we can bring force from anywhere and employ the nuclear arsenal from the U.S.," the official said the flight was weighted more toward reassuring South Korea and Japan.

"When they look up and see this, they know 'the U.S. has our backs.' And that is a very big deal in that part of the world, maybe more so than it would be in the US."

Without being specific, the official said the United States has a "range of options still out there, other things that we could do in the future."

The North Korean people are one hundred percent behind their leader and they're all hoping and praying for war. See, the moment this fat fool gets toppled, millions of North Koreans would pour over the border into SK in celebration, as they welcome the dawning of their long awaited reunification.

Perhaps this fat fool is either just incompetent or perhaps still too young to know that during the Cod War, the Soviet Union had thousands of ICBMs pointed at every major American city, that is nuclear missiles that could actually reach us but as a capable Superpower, never once did the Soviet Union ever threatened to carry out a preemptive strike against the U.S. and neither did the U.S. ever threatened to strike the Soviet Union. This young fool still has a lot of growing up to do.

Kim Jong FAT keeps flapping his trap; BUT, notice that he *HAS NOT* CLOSED THE INTERNATIONAL CROSSING BORDER between North and South Korea, which provides about $1.5 BILLION dollars PER YEAR in CARGO income to feed and fund the DPRK because they cannot do it themselves. So, WHO CARES if "war is eminent," apparently COMMERCIALISM continues.

THAT'S how you KNOW he's bluffing and trying to impress the elderly military generals–in a country where "age counts" according to an ABC news report on T.V.

If the piglet fires ONE SHOT at U.S. interests, just tell the South Koreans (because WE still have a "hotline" with them) to TURN all their food-aid and cargo trucks around, CLOSE the South Korean side, and ANNIHILATE that border crossing. THAT WAY, *CHINA* has to feed all of North Korea, where Cannibalism is common among the population. China WON'T do it. THEN, the U.S. *ATTACKS* with submerged missile submarines. We can LEVEL their key interests within 2 minutes.

No, that's how you know these wars are all BS and manipulated by the people who really control this planet. If you can't see how the elite bankers run the show and that North Korea and Iran are playing the role of boogeyman to keep the military industrial complex running full steam ahead, then you will never understand how their world operates.

In a REAL war, the United States would wipe North Korea off the map before one of their rockets even hit a target. We don't fight to win though. Our wars are designed for maximum occupancy and maximum spending. The world's greatest military has been battling 25,000 Taliban soldiers for over a decade now. Stop ignoring the inconvenient truths. We have war criminals and traitors in political office allowing international bankers to slowly fleece and destroy this country.

Remember this post when the USA resembles Mexico and the dollar is worth a peso.

We should start evacuating Americans from the Korean Peninsula right now. This would be a more effective threat than placing visible aircraft carriers in the area. There is no need to play chicken with this idiot. It wouldn't work. He is just like the guy who baits the cops into shooting him. He knows he can't win against us. Dying on his own terms is the only thing he can control. And he obviously doesn't care about his citizens. They would simply be collateral damage in his quest for martyrdom.

Why would they start a war? Because North Korea is led by a power hungry, weak willed individual who cares nothing for his people. Communist regimes don't arm themselves to the teeth for protection. They terrorize, enslave, dominate and murder. They are aggressors whose ultimate goal is to control as much and as many. What better way to feign power & fearlessness than to the threaten the United States? Kim Jong Un knows the U.S. will not attack first. He is sheltered & kowtowed to by all who surround him. He knows nothing of the world as it really is. He sincerely doesn't realize that he is an embarrassment, like a little Chihuahua nipping at the heels of a German Shepard.

Actually, the point of the B-2 bomber is to have a low radar signature. They can be seen. When on bombing missions, they are often used at night which makes them hard to detect visually.

I used to live near Whitman Air force base and you can actually hear them, but they are well past you by the time that happens.

I want to know how this is any different than Iran. Seriously. North Korea already has nuclear weapons, that's definitely a big difference, but how is the hatred they have for the US and South Korea, which nobody seems to take seriously, different than the hatred Iran has for the US and Israel, which has everyone's panties in a twist? At the end of the day, neither isolated nation is going to deploy nuclear weapons, and everyone knows it. Both states would see total retaliatory annihilation, which is the exact reason NEITHER should be taken seriously. Little doggies bark. That's what they do for attention. But for some reason, US officials say "a nuclear-armed North Korea, which is 30 MILES from Seoul, is just talking crazy", while a nowhere-close-to-nuclear-armed Iran is "the greatest threat the free world currently faces". If I'm South Korea, I'm probably a little weary that my friend and ally thinks a nation with a crazy leader and no nukes is a greater threat than a crazy leader and many nukes. Of course, that's just me...

It is kind of like Russia nuking Canada or Mexico and expecting the US to just say, "oh well, we might get radiation in our border cities, but that's cool". It ain't going to happen; the US won't nuke first. This clown Kim Jong-un could actually start WWIII if he attacks, and if he does, I'm pretty sure is because China tells him to.

Russia understand that someday a strong nuclear N Korea would be hard to control and could turn the GUN on Russians because Kim and Generals are mad men. Actually he knows full well what we have. Un was educated in the west. The noise is to assert his leadership at home. If the world would cut off his ability to be in front of the media it would be over. He has a failed economy and the country is in a starvation situation. They have no natural resource particularly fuel and they must rely on China for every drop. Un is between a rock and a hard spot so he has created this distraction from what is going down in every village in NK. I feel sorry for the average person in NK. It is a harsh life with not opportunity.

Can't wait for this war to finally start. The sooner it restarts, the sooner we can leave... or hadn't you niticed that between 30k and 50k troops have been stationed there since the 1950's? Time to finally put the conflict to bed. Besides, then China would have to own up for IT'S bad behavior, since it will no longer have NK to point to. War for NK is the best thing that will ever happen to it. Have you SEEN how well South Korea is doing??? It will be like the economic miracle that happened to East Germany after the wall fell. South Korea will become more prosperous too, since (as in East Germany), rebuilding their broken country will be a gold rush, filled with cheap labor, expanding equality, modernization, and certainly no one starving anymore. Please, please, PLEASE North Korea... start something. We beg you! Since we won't be the ones to start it, you have to go first. We promise, the main fighting will be over quick, and will put SKorea in charge of the after effects and peacekeeping, rebuilding stuff that USA sucks at. We rolled up Iraq in 3 days, you will present a lesser challenge... 🙂 Waiting....

ahh the old rhetoric. We are not broke, far from it. We do have some areas that spent beyond their means, but those are generally remnants from the last technology surges, not the current ones. The rust belt has had problems for decades, and is for the most part on a path to recovery not ruin.

As for stealing oil from arabs.. theres a lot of rich arabs that are happy that we are such generous 'thieves'. We pay, and pay generously both in money, aid, and infrastructure for that oil. Nicely we are finding our own energy reserves, leading to our own energy boom, which is weaning us from the teat of those 12th century societies.

Yup... because some of those borders when they are breached will lead to hundreds of thousands of deaths and mass enslavement, not the picking of corn and your hamburger being cooked at a cheaper price you still complain about. Our borders with canada and mexico have been porous since these countries started, and the idea that this is a problem is a fine example of a straw man argument.

When I was flying with AWACS in the 1980's, during a joint training mission with South Korea, we had about 500 military planes, fighters and bombers, under our command. They all flew from 3 directions, en mass, towards North Korea. At the very last second, all of the planes turned and went about their way. I can only imagine to panic the North Koreans felt. I guess the North might be paranoid for a reason...

Look at Sadam H. and all the other morons that went before him.. Only interested in their own power and ability to rule... Someone should take him out like they did Bin Laden. Un is willing to sacrifice his people and world peace just because of his ego. Nontheless, we need to be vigilant. Look how Hirohito (sp?) surprised America with a wake-up call one morning in Decemeber 1941... This time the stakes are higher because of nuclear technology... Un fails to understand that one or two pushes of the button and North Korea ceases to exist. I feel sorry for all the good people in N.Korea that will be hurt. I wish Un could be captured and hanged by his own people.. The US was able to deliver on facilitating that Sadam. One alternative has not been brought forward... Please be open minded!! In this case (amoung other reasons), China is worried that they have been caught spying recently with a US Army Reservist and fear the negitve press that is sure to follow. When issues like China's occupation of Tibet surface as it does regularly, woof woof yaps it up the next day. Guaranteed. North Korea has starved over 2 million people, of their own people. All South Korea and the US has to do, is have a big barbque, let the North Korean soldiers smell all that meat cooking, and they'll forget about all this war talk and give their weapons up, to have a good meal. Problem solved. Kim will get hundreds of thousands of innocent people killed, while he hides out, kind of like what GW Bush did in Iraq.

'The official said the B2 flew over Osan Air Base, about 50 miles south of the Demilitarized Zone and North Korean border.

"It's a unique, quite visible signal," the official said.'

Visible signal? I thought it wasn't supposed to be visible... mostly.

GWB would have already taken care of this? Really? You mean when he proclaimed that "North Korea will not be allowed to re-process their spent fuel rods" and they proceeded to do exactly that, along with kicking out the inspectors and removing the cameras.

For those who say "nuke em now" are you prepared to see endless pictures of burning, scalded, maimed women and children crawling through the wreckage? May be necessary, but that's what it will entail and then some.

People don't realize that NK will not attack us. Russia will not retaliate with them if we attack. China will not retaliate with them if they attack. They know this. If NK attacks, they will be left to burn. None of their allies will stand with them because there are too many repercussions if they do.

The North Koreans don't have anything to gain by attacking anyone. Should they do that, NK will be attacked by NATO (again). They have maneuvered themselves into a position in which they lose whatever they do. Very stubborn. Even if they are the secret banker reason for increased military expenditure by their bluster, the North Koreans lose out by playing that role. The US won't relinquish territory to Communist China when push comes to shove. NK is playing the role of scary barking dog at their own loss.

United States doesn't attack countries without any Financial Gain. That's why they're waiting for NK to attack first, unlike Iraq where they just said Iraq had WMD and it turned out they didn't then took control of their oil fields. North Korea in fact has Nuclear weapons but you don't see them rushing to invade.

Interesting aspect about the photo that's not mentioned, or noticed by CNN in the caption – "North Korean President Kim Jong Un being briefed by his generals" – the briefing's taking place in front of a map of America's and Mexico's west coast with some kind of markings or targets. A typical propaganda ploy by North Korea.

Cut off the hundreds of millions of dollars in food aid we give them annually. Then they'll be too busy scratching around for food to think about launching rockets. Why the hell do we given North Korea any aid anyway? We've placed the most damaging sanctions on Iran in the history of civilization, and they don't even have nuclear weapons. Then we give aid to North Korea, WHICH HAS DEVELOPED NUCLEAR WEAPONS! That's some great foreign policy there. M0r0ns.

This situation is not to be taken lightly, nor is it to be considered a joke. The North Koreans are very intelligent. The great amount of time that us Americans spend getting viewing pleasure from our televisions & computers...Is pretty much doubled the time that the North Koreans spend self educating there self by books & such.

It shock the nation when 9/11 slipped through the cracks, please dont doubt that this situation is water under the bridge.
I, other thee other hand am TRYING to have as much faith as I can in President Obama & our Department of Defense to rectify the situation–PEACEFULLY!

Kim Jong already know he has a 1st class ticket to hell, just like his father had. But instead of Kim Jong excepting his 1st class ticket as is, he wants to take on the form of SATAN him self & fire missiles at the United States of America. Do not worry, Jong–although the Bible states we are IN OUR LAST DAYS, in the end (although dealing with many years of struggle) GOOD WINS & evil loses to the burn in the pits of hell!

They won't. Russia and China have evolved past only being military powers into economic ones, and are as annoyed with NK as everyone else, as evidenced by them allowing the latest UN security council resolution against NK to pass. Instability and fear is bad for business. They'll give the US and the rest of the world a pretty long leash in which to try to teach that little NK pig faced fat boy a lesson.
