North Korea's threat to launch a preemptive nuclear strike against the United States has puzzled American officials, who see the regime ramping up its threats and rhetoric.
It's leading to the belief that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is more unpredictable, more dangerous and harder to read than his late father, Kim Jong Il.
"The new leader is acting in ways a bit more extreme than his father, who was colder and more calculated," a senior administration official said. "Kim Jong Il was more aware of the off-ramps to end these escalations.
"I don't recall he ever went this far in terms of the pace and scope of the rhetoric. Threatening to launch nukes directly against the United States and South Korea confirms what a lot of people have been saying, which is we are dealing with someone new," the official added.
Comparing Kim Jong Il, who died last December, to a chess player, the official said the son is more like a boxer.
"Nobody knows what he has planned, what he is thinking or contemplating doing or why the North Koreans are tripling down on their rhetoric," the official said.
Another senior administration official said Kim's youth and education abroad offered promise for many North Korea watchers that he would be more willing to engage with the West.
"Unfortunately, he is following the example of his father and grandfather pretty closely," the official said. "It's hard to be optimistic."
His grandfather, Kim Il Sung, was the founding leader of North Korea.
Officials said the latest threats, coupled with North Korea's nuclear test last month and its launch of a long-range rocket into space in December, have the United States and South Korea bracing for the possibility of a violent response by Pyongyang to tougher U.N. sanctions approved on Thursday.
They pointed to the 2010 sinking of a South Korean submarine and shelling of a South Korean island.
"It's dangerous to dismiss these threats as just rhetoric and propaganda, the second official said. "It's hard to predict."
Leading up to the U.N. vote, North Korea upped its bellicose rhetoric.
A spokesman for the foreign ministry suggested the United States "is set to light a fuse for a nuclear war."
As a result, North Korea "will exercise the right to a preemptive nuclear attack to destroy the strongholds of the aggressors and to defend the supreme interests of the country," the country said in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency.
Despite the strong language, analysts say North Korea is years away from having the technology necessary to mount a nuclear warhead on a missile and aim it accurately at a target. And, analysts say, North Korea is unlikely to seek a direct military conflict with the United States.
North Korea's behavior is even more curious because it comes as South Korea's new president, Park Geun-hye, took office last week calling for new dialogue with the North. Although she pledged a strong defense posture and retaliation against North Korean provocations, she called for easing tensions that grew under her predecessor.
"Given that for five years they were so angry at the previous president, Lee Myung-bak, why would they mortgage the next five years by being so difficult when a new South Korea leader is just taking office," the first official asked. "It's so very concerning."
Officials note that China, North Korea's closest ally, has demonstrated unprecedented frustration with Pyongyang's behavior.
In rare public statements, a top Chinese Communist party official suggested that China abandon North Korea and support unification with South Korea.
"We are in a new territory. Something is happening in China," one of the officials said. "For the North to be acting this way at this time has everyone on edge on what is going on, but nobody has good answers because the country is so opaque. We are trying to find a precedence to explain this."
The worst possible explanation, the official said, "is that the North Koreans don't have a plan. That is when chances for miscalculation are the greatest."
Nukes sound terrible, so does a leader who is compared to a real life "Rocky". I don't know what this supreme leader is upto but it appears to be a harsh move to have a greater control over over the country then the previous rulers. Kim's age factor is not in question, but the question is does he wants North Korea to turn into the next Baghdad, Afghanistan or Syria ??
i've come to light about these events rather recently so i would refrain from commenting for or against this man , perhaps a new international peace treaty at cannabis legalized states may lead to some delayed but "concrete" solutions.
I heard today how Kim Jong Un and Dennis Rodman were made fun of on Saturday Night Live. I was very saddened to hear this. And how CNN and other News media/People are saying about them and talking trash. Who are we to Judge North Korea (Kim Jong Un). He is a young man, who was influenced by his culture, father, and grandfather. He has hopes and dreams as we all do. None of us are perfect, America is not perfect, and after Saturday Night Live showed such a thing that I do not even want to watch, It is shameful. That reflects on all of us, on America. Instead of insulting we should be working on resolving, which would mean showing a good example in America that Kim Jong Un would want to follow. I think it is awesome Dennis Rodman got to meet with him, that was a big step for America, no matter how much the public thinks they are goofy, as I said before none of us are Normal, Perfect. I could find a flaw, a goofiness is everyone. America and the World need severe Prayer, whatever your belief or nonbelief, Pray. As America and the World is changing, so could North Korea, invoking the government to start war because we are bored is not the answer. As Rodman Said, Kim Jong Un has never said from his mouth that he wanted war, it’s his influence around him, the older non influential N. Koreans. Kim Jong Un could bring a great breakthrough to his culture if given the right influence, putting him down and giving the older order the power is not going to bring good change, but disaster, and possible death to a young man who only wanted to see great things, Change, Things he never got to experience because he was dictated by his father and grandfathers before him. Give him a chance and think about your own flaws, would you want someone on here making fun of you and everyone you met in life? Would you want to be belittled before the world, young, trying to break free from bondage, only to find that breaking free would only hurt as bad if not worse than the bondage you lived in..... I would visit Kim Jong Un I give you a thumbs up Dennis Rodman
The young man Kim Jong Un is looking good, he looks like he is losing weight, he is happier, less stressed looking. You never know he could bring great change if given the chance. Killing or provoking is not going to bring about the change that we need. War for entertainment is not what we need. Unfortunately there are simple minded people out there that want that. What we need is Peace, working together, to bring Great Change and Order to a world gone to chaos.
Wow Harper! YOU ARE A NUT! What does all that flowery BS have to do with anything?
NK was saying they are going to nuke us, please give them a chance Miss Harper.
hahahaha. You are cracking me up, Ms. Harper.
First of, non-believers don't pray. We think and reason through facts.
Second, even in my worst/deepest flaw, I've never dreamed of nuking people because they dont want to hang out with me.
Third, considering most of the North Korea's population is poor, a lot of people are probably malnourished, that fact that this "young leader" could loose some weight to be healthier says something about the hypocrisy that's going on in that country. Did you know Communism ideology revolve around the idea of a classless, moneyless, and stateless society, where resources belong to all and are to be distributed base on need? Of all of that, only "moneyless" is true of North Korea society.
And "Would you want to be belittled before the world, young, trying to break free from bondage, only to find that breaking free would only hurt as bad if not worse than the bondage you lived in....." – WHAAT?
I'm not sure where you get the idea of people wanting to have a "war for entertainment", but your comment is definitely entertaining... and a little concerning (just a little).
Its comedy! who cares. go feed your cats
Are you high? Kim Jong Un is the leader of a belligerent nation of lunatics who consistently lay out threats to annihilate the U.S. through nuclear weapons. Domestically, most of their economy goes into beefing up their military while many of their people starve from famine. Their isolationist world ideology "Juche", created by the country's founder, Kim-Il Sung, stresses that they remain independent of all other nations. Because of this, they don't trade and have virtually no economy, and their people rely on foreign aid in order to live. They have NO freedom of speech–their state-run media continuously spouts anti-U.S. propaganda to further their isolationist position. Expressing anti-government opinions is punishable by sentence to re-education camps or imprisonment not only of yourself, but of your extended family, where you are beaten, tortured, forced into hard labor and in many cases executed. Even indirectly disrespecting the effigies of their "Dear Leader" are punishable. And that's on top of his recent ratcheting up of his nuclear program with legitimate threats to attack the U.S. Give him a chance? The day he announces that he's making Gorbachev-like reforms to his country is the day we can start talking. Until then, he's not to be trusted and Rodman–who is a former NBA player in a country whose aristocracy loves basketball–is an irresponsible idiot for going over there.
I couldn't have said it better myself, Jay. Out of all the responses to this situation you are apparently very in-tune with what is going on. Kudos.
Dennis Rodman is weird but I tend to agree with you that any kind of human contact with Kim J U can't hurt. We should buy him tickets to the NBA championship and maybe a seat at the WSOP main event. Expand his horizons. Buy him a new pair of kicks. Put him in his own gangnum video.
Who is paying you to write this stuff? Comedy gold!
/oh... and Saturday Night Live IS a comedy show, in case you didn't realize this Miss Best Korea
Since the media only gives us bits and pieces, if any, of the U.S. dealings with nuclear power hardware, et al. I am looking for some clarification about an article I read when Jr was in office. In a report by the BBC, Jr made a deal with N Korea to waive inspections of their nuclear power program... you know, the inspections that prevent governments from using spent rods to make bombs. According to this report, Jr also gave N Korea some mulla to help them get the job done faster, because N Korea's current nuclear power system was aging. Also mentioned in the article was that Jr's act of generosity was to make up for calling N Korea part of the 'Axsis of Evil'. Do a search. The article is easy to find. Also, at the same time Jr was amping up N Korea's new nuclear power system, Rumsfeld sat on the board of directors of a company that sold rods to N Korea, and other countries.
And the sanctions on N Korea's foriegn exchange bank that is well known for funding N Korea's nuclear program is only now cut off from the U.S. financial system. What's up with that? Are you telling me that it's okay to indirectly fund N Korea's nuclear program, until they start bragging about it and popping off fireworks?
And please oh please tell me that when you say that this kid you held such high hopes for was educated abroad, that he wasn't educated HERE!??? It would not suprise me in the least. Not at all.
And Jr hands Iraq to N Korea's best buddy: Iran. Brilliant, Jr.
Are you kidding me?
Did you get this from wikapedia?
I never like JR but really, you are either a gullible fool or just an agent of nonsense.
Get a real job in the trade and try that again.
PS, your posts only help to further this dis information.
BYW, hundreds of Thousands die in NK – from starvation and yet they push on with cold war rhetoric.
When you choose a side to stand on, just rememeber that you have the interent, a cell phone, constant power, public librabries ( where you can go get warm if nothing else ), and the ability to write what you want.
This is america. love it or leave it. If you leave it why not go to NK? really? something holding you back? like your freedom? Let me know about that
I think even China's patence with North Korea must be reaching the limit of tolerance.
NK needs cannot afford the arrogance and aggression simply because it is a bankrupt country. Most North Koreans are living in abject poverty, with nothing decent to eat and definitely little electricity supply in their homes.
In 1979, China taught a lesson to their once close ally Vietnam, by launching a strong across the border attack.
So, any more further NK outrageous provocations of war in that region, may not be tolerated by the new Chinese Government.
Boys letting his alligator ego overload his hummingbird butt......China needs to tighten this bad dogs leash....Charles Bowen Solomon Stone
I'm sure this will stir things up as well i'm going to use 911 as an example (threat – no compliance = 911)
America Doesn't Acknowledge Threats / we hear you but its like telling someone Ill kill you but they're holding the gun.
911 would've never happened had U.S. not had a solution before hand. The outrage stemmed from the lives lost during the conflict but the opposition doesn't regard the hell they'll have to pay for inaccurate decisions. It's called a BLUFF. flying planes into the WCT was a devastating but cheap war tactic in comparison to technology that the U.S. in-bodies.
if you are going to post comments w/ questionable information please don't. I would like to say we are Americans(The most spiteful people on earth subliminally ) and yes we have multiple situations of our own at hand that need panning but its not going to happen. Think about it for a second . I believe the same moment that Kim tenses his vocal chords to initiate a strike the U.S. intel will have 80% of that country up in smoke. I hate to admit it but america always have been and always will be the true dictators. The outlook to this is much bigger. Americas more concerned with his ignorance than the actually idea of him applying action. America does not take kindly to threats especially when they invented the concept. Along with the pre determined strategy if the threat approach does not exact conditions.
it was a ship, not a sub that was sunk in 2010. ROKS Cheonan (PCC-772) 26 March, 2010.
All HUMANS are basically no better or different than locusts and/or any other species that Exodus's and/or Migrates. This is nothing NEW and as long as people FEAR death and/or SYMPATHIZE with the "DEVIL"; they should expect nothing less than the "ENEMY" just walking into your house and telling you to leave or DIE. AMERICA has become its own worst ENEMY. Making America the ENEMY within! What a PITY. The best tricks are old tricks with modern twists.
I hate to tell you...Gods not real. Classic example of someone personifying parts of human behaviour they do not wish to accept with a man in the clouds etc etc. Sigh...this is the real evil...Religion
Hate to tell you.... but you can not prove God is not real. The real evil isnt religion. The real evil is lack of knowledge and trying speak on things you have no clue about.
the devil is your stupidity.
@Common Sense The burden of proof isn't on non-believers, it's on anyone who insists an unseeable and unprovable being created all of time and space. That's the statement that has no bearing in fact and therefore is the one that must be proven. Meanwhile, scientists are making an excellent case for no God each and every day as they investigate the Higgs-Boson particle. The anti-God theory for the universe has plenty of evidence and it's not even the side that needs to produce it, religion can't say the same.
God is in your head.
– An atheist with an IQ of 142.
The Higgs-boson particle is being researched still to conclude if we are truly suspended in nothing or if our universe is in a "bubble" type state that will eventually expire. It is a common misconception in the media.
I can't believe people don't remember the strategy of détente from the cold war days. North Korea is in such bad shape that this new meglamaniac has to divert attention from domestic problems to making threats and "dramatic" announcements. He's a wannabe look at me Hitler. If one nuclear missile is launched then his pathetic parcel of earth is a radioactive for awhile. P.S. D rodman. you are the biggest loser on this planet, ever.
of course usa are afriad faced with a nuclear weapon pointed at there faces its game over good bye usa soldier googbye dmz.
Let me explain somethng here people, the US has enemies all over the world and they could be conspiring together first off. Next, to continue to place sanctions on NK is not a good idea! Think about this, if your country has no money left, no food left, and no one is helping you what do you have left? War! Corner an animal and they will fight!
Couldn't agree with you more. WE are already spread out all over that region. Israel is in the epi-center. History repeats infinitely. Why keep prolonging the inevitable?
I agree with you and all sanctions should be lifted to give them a chance to calm down.Peace is better than war by all
means. All NK is doing is trying defend itself at present but if patience gets very thin than there is war which we dont want to see innocent people and kids dying.
You can't be serious. Clearly you don't understand how hopeless North Korea's situation is. Their current rhetoric has alienated them from the one ally they still had in the world: China. If North Korea decides to choose war, they're outgunned technologically from every side. North Korea going to war is the greatest and last mistake the military regime of that country would ever make. Things have changed drastically since the Korean War, and the world's ability to wage war has become far more advanced while North Korea's has stagnated. If it happens again, it won't be the same outcome, it will be North Korea's decimation with the death of Kim Jong-Un and the majority of its military ruling class with the US and China working with South Korea to help North Korea (assuming there still is a NK and ultimately not just a unified K) right itself after years of ruling that has thrust it into poverty. The rest of the world has nothing to fear from a war with NK.
If wisdom comes with age, experience and education, North Korea is in more trouble than they realize. I'm afraid that Kim Jong XBox thinks he will just hit the reset button and play a new game after he loses this cool game he found.
I just wonder if he's going to try and nuke us "Gangnam Style" If the rhetoric and posturing gets to be too much, we can always just "Send in the drones,...Send in the drones,... They're already here!"
Wow, this guy could be a Republican Congressman. Scorched earth all the way.
Exactly the point. From the ashes the Phoenix shall rise...
Hello my son David, please do thy will and not blaspheme...The Phoenix is a mythological fantasy creature that does not exist...you are worshipping a fake god. I believe this was listed as a "no no" by my daughter Moses on the clay tablets upon the mountain after I spoke as a burning bush. This was also Moses' first run in with LSD but that's another story...anyhoo...I don't know what would posses you to think a Phoenix is going to rain fire anyway. If I was going to do it that way I would at least use a dragon. The Phoenix in 'Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix' definitely ruined their badass image. Peace out...the holiest of holes....GOD
Yes. Kim Jong Un threatens the worlds food supply by eating it all.
Switch North Korea with Iran and Kim with Ahmadinajad and you will have a totally different tone in the comments. Good job media. Heck Iran hasn't even said that it will nuke the U.S.
But Iran has said that it will do so to Israel, and now that North Korea has tested the Iranian designed nuclear weapon for them, and the Iranian designed missles as well, they not only have a tested weapon but a tested delivery system as well. The major difference between Iran and N Korea is that Iran will bomb Israel, N Korea is just increasing the rhetoric to gain more assistance from the US. It has worked many times before, and may work again.
Oh there's that Israel again... seems to be a part of any unrest... and of course we must come to their rescue!
We here reading this don`t have access to detailed info on him ,but in my opinion i don`t think he is anymore dangerous than his father, he has learned to rattle his sabre like his father, just a little harder words to show his military leaders how tough he is. I believe he is better educated than his father , that makes him a little more dangerous , may have learned a few more tricks in the cyber war, but not stupid enough to point a little gun at the United States...but I could be wrong and he just might be that stupid after all , we shall see.
In spite of what the 'analyists say, North Korea likely has a small enough nuclear weapon and missle delivery system thanks to the Iranians. He is much more dangerous. His country is sinking deeper and deeper into poverty and he not only needs to keep the people at bay but more importantly the powerful military happy. Some say that he was directly in charge of the sinking of the S Korean ship and shelling of the S Korean Island. Yes much more dangerous.
who knows?kim j is an looks tuff then theres veitnam charly humm?pnm,.
East meets West
I think he is hot!!!! is he single? LOLjk
It's the hair
N. Korean Leader Kim Jong Un is a person who, both loved and admired his Father. Loyalty is very good and it is easy to see why Kim is standing strong, he got it from his Father, Kim Jong II. Peace is a good thing. Rodman must have saw something all are missing. Peaceall.
YEUP! ALL IT TAKES IS A PHONE CALL!
This guy is crazy as it comes....
This dude is 70 kilos of poo stuffed into a size 9 shoe.
My 2 cents worth: He is insane like Hitler and will push the world into bad things. Of course, he will end up just like Hitler who will always be known as a monster. It's just a matter of time before his insanity does something like Holmes and then a ticked off USA sends NK back to the stone age.
I think every leader is Dangerous at some point or the other. Look all around you.
Yes...I believe he is more dangerous, but not for the reasons you would think. He would be more dangerous than his father because he is unlike his father. His people love him. He is a much kinder ruler, therefore the loyalty his people would have would be undying. Also, the South is aware of this and would be more willing to negotiate with him.
Give the young man a break ,stop making fun of him , the more whole world tries to corner him ,his gonna get more
I dont think both are dangerous than Reagon, Bush and Obama. These three have killed more people than any other head of state.
I guess the name, Josef Stalin, never entered your mind. Or Mao Tse Tung. Or Ghengis Khan.
I BUY ALMOST EVERYTHING EXCEPT FOOD AND CLOTHING FROM ONLINE AUCTIONS. MOST PEOPLE AREN'T AWARE OF THE ALMOST UNBELIEVABLE DEALS THAT THEY CAN GET FROM ONLINE AUCTION SITES. THE SITE THAT HAS THE BEST DEALS IS saveBangCom

know. i do know that i bought my son an ipad there for less than $100 and my husband a $250
loews gift cards for $48. why would i even think about shopping anyplace else?
Nuke them all!
I am amazed these experts are dense enough to think he is actually in charge of the government. He does not run North Korea any more than Carl Gustav runs Sweden. The North Korean military has set up a self-perpetuating regime. Kim is a showpiece, that's it. Classic figurehead monarchy.
Where does North Korea get their weapons. Doesn't the U.N. step in at some point and cut them off?
My opinion is that conditions in North Korea have gotten so bad that it threatens to cause a peasant revolution. Historically NK has used outward belligerence to mask internal strife, and I think that's the case here. If the sanctions manage to cut off the flow of luxuries like steak, expensive jewelry, Hennessy, cigars, etc. to the elite(the only real reasons to live that they have) then I think Jong Un's days are numbered, and correspondingly, he's ramping up the war mongering rhetoric to maintain what little order is left in that country: the threat of violence from "outside" is a powerful unifying force...
I think they said they actually were cutting them off of the luxuries
You have to give the kid some slack. Him being a new father and all. Kim, Kim, get up its your turn to feed the baby, Kim, Kim, get up, it's your turn to change the diapers. & that hair cut, I would imagine that just scares the heck out of the baby, making it cry even more. The poor kid can't get any sleep so he's lashing out at the world.
Scary thing is Bob , you could have it right . Wouldn't surprise me if something as simple as that is the reason he is being a weenie .
Kim Jung Un is still a child in body as for his education an under standing of the world's complexity's. He's fat an sassy an enjoys his steak an wine why should he worry. As for his fellow country man these people
we should feel sorry for he's not really running the show but is let do as he wishes by the generals an other hanmdlers are.
Do you really think your own parents would let you get away with such beheavor ( as in Kim Jung Un case ). After all he's only 20 years old still in dippers. Like it's been said in one of the other coments he will disapper never to be heard from again one day when the generals are finnish with him.
...Is Kim Jong Un more dangerous than his father?
That's like asking if Porky Pig is meaner than Elmer Fudd.
i also think that kim jong un is in charge but he's not his fathers chronies and the people with a lot of money/power-- who would be very hostile towards any sign of Kim Jong Un trying to change its government and end this insanity-- are the actual people running the show.
N.Korea is acting very irrational, their behavior is very unstable and it seems like they have their backs against the wall and their options are running out. This probably why they are acting so insane, usually the North would threaten or do something that was destabalizing and then back off because they knew they would get some kind of aide from The USA. Now the US and the rest of the world is no longer taking the bait which would explain their belligerence
Kim Jong Un would have a "tragic accident" in the near future
Hopefully love will fill our hearts and minds enough that no leader such as "Little Kim" will be able to penetrate that love to the extent that hurt will come to these shores. Let us show solidarity and love.
"Kim Jong Un" is looking for the loopholes int he United States fabric which he can make larger. He sees we over here are not united and are not working together, and that is enough for him to feel he can invade us at any time. We over here must begin acting as adults, not children. The Republicans hate the President– that is evident. Some of the Democrats are two sided, and no matter what goes on it is a struggle to get anything done. The whole world is watching and this makes us appear weak and ineffective because we cannot run our own house. Chavez's successor also expressed that he doesn't like the United States. Yes, the other countries are watching and when those in Congress lash out to hur the President, they are actually hurting themselves. We need each other and we need to hang together. Kim Jong Un and no other head of state will be able to hurt is if we show solidarity. the newscasters need to stop making inuendoes about our President and leadership over here. Other countries don't do it and the respect element is much higher. Our supposed "transparency" has become a nightmare– telling everything– telling too much, maligning and crushing our own. "A house divided against itself cannot stand.
Here's a thought........maybe our own "Dear Leader" should cease making divisive speeches.
Do you think it might just be possible that we here in America are a bit more worried about Obama and his significant influence in our lives and freedoms than we are with this troll in NK? I for one want my freedom, want to keep my job from being outsourced, want my taxes to stay somewhere below 50%, want the social security I have been paying into for 30+ years to be payed back when I am old and defensless, and want my military to protect our sovreignty. Those are pretty simple expectations, that I THINK most Americans would agree with. What the hell is so hard with that? Please don't compare apples to oranges. Kim Jung Un is a joke. Obama is a nightmare. We need to fix ourselves before fixing NK.
Finally a knowledgeable post. For those who think they know politics but don't, you should be far more concerned about your own government who is already in your backyard; and far more concerned about the China that intends to keep N. Korea fully corralled, than N. Korea itself. N. Korea is a mouse that roars. Washington and Beijing d barely whisper the things we all really need to be aware of.
The few things we know about the leaders of North Korea are scary enough. But the historical precedence is there they are revered as demigods, or at least that's the rhetoric which I would expect to make each generation of leaders progressively less stable. When you are tough that you are a god and that you can do no, how can you be a rational individual that is able to make sound reasonable decisions. Why would you truly consider the needs of your people when you are not just a king but a god in your own wright.
The fear should be that he becomes a Caligula, or perhaps even a David Koresh type leader who decides to take his people with him when things get bad.
Being naive is dangerous.
Why should people be surprised that North Korea has threatened a pre-emptive strike? Israel and America have both done so often, and they have less reason or justification to feel threatened by other countries. North Korea would be justified under the UN charter in launching a pre-emptive attack on the USA. Whether it would be wise to do so is another matter.
Too bad... you simply don't have a clue!
spoiled and fool of himself without a clue as to the world of politics. Yes, he is dangerous because he has armies of idiotic zombies who are following him. Not a good mix,
like a teenager, this kid does not know where he stands, doesn't understand the world around. He needs a X-box or PS3 so he can play shootings without hurting himself. this guy still has a lot of growing up to do. ... feel so sorry for the north Korean people have to, helplessly, put up with another miserable generation. let he make a move so the South Korean can go up there to take this guy away.
they are idiotic brainwashed fools. I do not feel sorry for these people but I think we should watch them very closely....very closely, indeed. They could manage to do some harm and make Al-Qaeda look benign.
The kid is a figure head. The generals still run the country.
Nope; Have you forgotten last July and the shakeup of military brass starting with Ri Yong-Ho? And the generals never ran the country anyway, best guess is the transition was carried out by Kim Jong Il's sister Kim-Kyong-hui (Un's aunt) and her husband Jang Sung-taek. For the Kim family, everything has always been about maintaining their grip on power in North Korea, and not even Kim Jong Il's death would have swayed them from that #1 goal.
NK, go ahead and make it your day, loser.
He's not the leader. He just wants to play video games all day and eat pizza and ice cream. The army runs the country.
War is a last resort and sanctions are preferred. I wonder if technology should turn this on it's head? Sanctions are dumb, munitions are becoming smaller and more accurate. If one were to take an objective look at the human suffering both options cause, would sanctions still be preferred?
I agree 100%. Sanctions are just as stupid as war. They hurt everyone except those in power.
Well he is certainly not much smarter and for sure has a much worse barber than his father had. One would think being the head of state that you would get a better hair cut
He's spending all his allowance on FOOD.
Did they mean boat, not sub?
Kim Jong Un does it Gangnum style!
Kim Jung Phat had some sweet shades, and his son's haircut is vintage...NOT!
They'll probably just take out China!
He's an inbred simpleton and a danger to humanity....
History is full of leaders who were more dangerous than their fathers
Kim Jung Un has a Western education, and yet he does not seem to grasp the parallels of history. His fate and the fate of his country is already sealed. The North will collapse on the path it is walking on. Perhaps he does seem to grasp that concept and that is why he has this massive ego believing he can prove everyone wrong. I don't care much about what he decides to do, really. As of present, he is living on borrowed time. If he doesn't tone down the rhetoric, he could very well have a hard time sleeping lavishly at night - unaware of the day he will be overthrown. The time is coming. If he moves any one of his stubby fingers, he will be done.
he's thinking about dinner
Q: Why won't N Korea ever have a viable nuclear weapon? A: Kim Jong Un keeps eating all the yellowcake.
Kim Not Hung needs to give up his food allowance to his country–the brat.
KIm Not Hung needs to give up his food allowance to "his" country.. he is
a pathetic excuse for a person!
Of course we don't know what he's thinking. He's a communist dictator. He isn't capable of thinking.
I wonder if anyone's got the nerve to remind Doughnut Boy his momma is a Korean 'dancer' ROFL...

I live and work in Seoul as an expat and have been here for the last 4 years. Although the South Koreans have lived under NK's threats in the past and have not been too bothered by them but now it is different. With the end of the peace deal it just makes the threats a bit more of a concern. NK has nothing to lose whereas SK has a lot to lose.
Although some people think sanctions of cutting off the food and oil to NK is a good thing, but what happens when you corner a wild animal and it has nowhere to turn? It lashes out.
NK cannot be trusted at all. I fear that NK is trigger happy and they will do what ever they want when they want, with their guns and war toys. Sanctions should have been imposed when they sunk that Navy ship killing all those SK men and after the shelling of the island. It seems that NK can get away with murder and no body does anything about it. Only when NK threatens other countries then it becomes a concern. It should have been nipped in the bud back then but instead the wild animals leash has grown and become more provocative in it's nature.
Reunification is the key but will it be after a war? We all know that war gets no one anywhere, but I fear this may happen sooner or later. There is hope and there is fear.
He wants money. See "The Mouse That Roared" starring Peter Sellers. This has always been the game.
Your absolutely right it should of been dealt with then but we have wimp as president more worried about his legacies. Im a republican, but over the last 6 yars ive had to change my views both are not doing there job. The pepole are feed up with it. Ron paul for the first time in along while maid proud to be an American by standing up for both sides. Obama did even wont listen to it at all because he is stubborn and set in his on bubble.
I'm wondering if Kim is on drugs?
He likes his booze.
Gee I wonder if his extreme rhetoric has anything to do with the fact that he's a typical young male – bold and stupid. More testosterone than brains. If he's an NBA fanatic then he's used to moronic trash talk. Give him 10 years or so and he'll calm down. The fact that he has China upset isn't going to help him and given that trade between the two countries is booming I'm sure he'll be reigned in sooner or later. If not then he only has himself to blame. On the other hand China is relying on using the slave labor of NK to fuel their massive manufacturing sector once their own slaves begin to demand a more humane wage and living conditions...which is inevitable. So they may not be willing to upset him.
The one little problem with Kim Jong Un is that he is NOT a "typical young male." This jerk runs a country. If he keeps going the way he is headed, he won't last the ten years necessary to grow up. And, hopefully, neither will his country.
Looks like he needs another doughnut.
just more posturing as he tries desperately to impress his people with what a badas he is. I'm sure it will play out somehting like..
1. Posturing, posing, blustering and bravado from Doughnut Boy. Wild gesticulation in the direction of The West.
2. Politicians, ambassadors, and reporters all run to North Korea to 'open lines of dialogue'.
3. Many junkets later, The west offers to 'support' the people of North Korea with money, goods, and services, all paid for by the American people, in a show of compromise.
4. Doughnut Boy allows himself to be photographed shaking Hilary's hand, but inside his own country he spouts off about bringing the Americans to their knees and making them pay 'reparations' for a list of insults and slights. Like the slight of not taking his tubbiness seriously.
I think the move to speak with a less-than-bright ball player was a clever move on Doughnut boy's part. He made headlines, and anyone dumb enough to think that a ball player has a voice that should be taken more seriously than anyone else who is not an elected official is now calling the White house and posting online saying 'Yeah ok, so why ARENT we on the phone to Doughnut boy!?'
Anyway, comedy gold.
Boy, he is in need of a hair stylist.
His Mushroom Cloud hairstyle seems kind of appropriate don't you think? 🙂
This is much ado about nothing. I mean, we all know North Korea is incapable of launching attack anymore. That ship had sailed in the late 70's. At this moment, North Korea is completely dependent on China for fuel and supplies meaning it won't be able to sustain any sort of offensive without China's approval and support... unless they intend to walk all the way to Pusan on foot. China has significant interest in South Korean economy. There is no way it would support destruction of an important business partner.
Agreed. NK leaders are naive enough to think they can bluff the world into fearing them. They embarrass themselves and China. China is wise enough to distances themselves from the rhetoric coming out of NK who has become the butt of jokes world wide.
Youngster makes the most sense. This insecure no idiot is a danger no matter how we look at him.
