Holder: Drone strike against Americans in the U.S. possible
Attorney General Eric Holder Tuesday stopped short of entirely ruling out a drone strike against an American citizen on U.S. soil—without trial.
Holder’s comment came in a letter to Sen. Rand Paul. Paul had sent a letter to President Obama’s CIA director nominee John Brennan asking for the administration’s views on the president’s power to authorize lethal force.
In the letter, Holder said “It is possible I suppose to imagine an extraordinary circumstance in which it would be necessary and appropriate under the Constitution and applicable laws of the United States for the President to authorize the military to use lethal force within the territory of the United States. “
In a separate letter, Brennan told Paul that the CIA has no such authority.
The nomination passed its first hurdle Tuesday with the Senate intelligence committee voting to approve the nomination in a 12-3 vote. Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia said he voted against the nomination because of inconsistencies in Brennan's testimony.
Earlier in the day, the White House agreed to provide legal documents written by Justice Department officials explaining the legal rationale for targeting Americans overseas who are involved in terror-related activities that threatened America or American interests.

Holder is incompetent, imo. His responses to Fast and Furious demonstrated that. His reply to Paul here was six ways stupid, politically. That said, this is a non-issue, by and large. The Admin is not asserting an unfettered right to arbitrarily kill any U.S. citizen at any time. And ultimately, Holder is right: there are conceivable–though unlikely–situations wherein a President might authorize the killing of a U.S. citizen on U.S. soil. All involve war of some type; none involve the dinner table.

Eric the dow is at a record high, but that hardely represents the economy. Record amounts of people are still currently out of the workforce, record amount of people are on government assistance, and the average salary of the middle class is going DOWN. 30 companies that do well really well does not represent the state of things. Obama DOUBLED the deficit, 4 years in a row now, at most bush shares the blame for one year of it. Since tarp has nearly been payed back, there is no excuse for an informed person to blame anyone but Obama and the legislature.
Obama didn't double the debt. The problem is, and continues to be, the economists are neoclassicists, except for a few like Paul Krugman. In economists' models, they do not take into account private debt! That is what caused the collapse. First, it is private debt by investors that is pushing the DOW higher without any increase in jobs or productivity. There is a complete disassociation between real productivity and money supply. The debt did not increase under Bush and Obama, the Feds bought the debt, made it a public debt, but the debt was there all along. The debt incurred by Obama's stimulus package was too little but what there was of it is good debt, as it went into production, not into stock market manipulation. The housing collapse was housing inflation caused by incurring loads of private debt which had no floor based on actual US productivity.
The problem for Obama, and any President is that 40% of the economy is fake, based on money chasing money, not money being used to create jobs and increase productivity, and the typical economist is feeding flawed economic theory to the President. That would happen to any President. That is, 40% of the US economy is the financial industry. When the US had a solid economy, the financial industry was between 5% and 10% of GDP.
I don't think any President would make an economic decision that would go against the economic models that are pushed by 90% of the economists. I think Krugman is the only well-known economist that sees both the long term and short term problems, and he is in the decided minority. But, at least in the short term, we are not being a patently stupid as the Europeans, who are trying to come out of a recession by austerity. The result is Italy is collapsing, Greece is collapsing, Spain is collapsing, and more will follow until the Eurozone itself fails. Europe is like a family with too much debt, but instead of going to work to pay off the debts, they decide stay at home and to stop eating to save money.
The Fed has increased its balance sheet to $ 3 Trillion by buying US Treasuries that China no longer wants to but due to our outstanding debt obligations and also because helicopter ben bernanke is having the FED purchase mortgage backed securities at unprecedented levels. It is easy money for the banks at the FOMC window who get the money first at ZIRP and the fed pays interest in turn to the banksters for the US Treasury to be able to fund the out of control govt. spending, the increase in the money supply causes two things that are extremely damaging 1) malinvestment by banks who buy risky derivitaves, because they are to big to fail and our backed by the govt.and 2) the creation of asset bubbles
also the increase in the money supply at historic levels chasing the same amount of goods creates the insidous hidden tax known as inflation that we are witnessing at the pump and at the grocery store.Bernanke states that the FEDS goal is twofold to lower unemployment and to keep inflation down Bernanke the banking cartels puppet has failed miserably in his stated goals while enriching Banksters of the cabal .
There is not out-of-control government spending in the way you are saying. The problem is the government is trying to keep the economy alive at the same time it is being destroyed by the financial industry itself, and trying to buy time for the anemic productive economy to grow enough to support the collapsed roof the government is trying to hold up through public debt. The Fed, aside from flawed economic theory, is the only game in town, who has the power to keep any money flowing into production. The Republicans want to take the economy to full collapse like Europe, and Obama cannot move a stimulus package into place because of that. In addition, Republicans governors are doing their share to collapse the US economy by creating fake austerity problems at the state levels. If the Congress had any sense, and it doesn't, then a new stimulus package to increase productivity would relieve the Feds from buying the debt to keep the economy afloat. The increased productivity would be available to pay down the debt instead of hiding it at the Fed.

We know that in some cases, the FBI or police will kill someone without due process (Dorner, the guy who kidnapped the kid from a bus, etc). They have to pose an imminent threat to someone else's life. So drones could fit into that formula. But I would be concerned about a slippery slope on the concept of "imminent"

Have you ever seen what I drone can do? If you haven't let me illustrate it for you. A drone can, and was originally designed and deployed to be a surveillance tool. Shortly after those first deployments they were weaponized. There are very few alternatives available for drones aside from rockets or guided munitions. These are not precision weapons, they are essentially bomb delivery vehicles with surveillance capabilities.
Additionally, there is a big difference between a SWAT team going through due process and obtaining proper, established civilian authorization for a raid and Homeland Security tossing rockets at someone without any oversight that we can, as citizens, be a part of.
I would like you to imagine for a moment, that you live in an apartment complex, condo, duplex, even a neighborhood with homes very close together. Now imagine that your neighbor is targeted by a drone...and you happen to be home with your family. If they decide to "pull the trigger" on your neighbor, you are going to be affected severely. Hopefully it will only amount to loss of property, but many people in the middle east and certain other countries can attest that not just the "guilty" are "brought to justice" by drones. This is coming from someone that has seen this kind of thing up close and personal.
I hope that this makes sense to you because it is entirely too important to ignore or allow. This should not be happening within our borders, ever.

Congress does not interpret laws. They write them. The executive executes them, and therefore interprets the laws to fit the facts under consideration. Courts get involved only if there is a case or controversy, and occurs after the fact.

Read Holder's statement carefully: he spoke of the possibility and not the certainty, and only under extraordinary circumstances would the U.S. Govt use a drone be used to kill an American citizen whose actions can be construed to be treasonous, such as Al Awlaki. I believe that was a justifiable action.
The psychopath David Koresh and some of his Branch Dravidians were criminals and it can be argued that he would have continued to do great harm to some of his acolytes (think Jim Jones) if he had survived. He and his henchmen executed most of the Branch Dravidians in Waco, not the U.S. government, although, in hindsight, the government should have exercised more patience and wait this thing out (what was it? over 58 days?) so that more or all of the people could have been set free through negotiation.

Holder didn't say anything about killing a American on American soil just because the government has decided to label them a terrorist. His examples of potential use of drone were examples of an active active: Pearl Habor, 9/11.

I think you are missing the point. If you had sent a drone to kill David Koresh or Jim Jones you would have still killed innocent people. Every person deserves their right to free speech, but if they are killing people, or intentionally harming others they still deserve the right to a trial. Most criminals killed in a shootout are dead because they are shooting at law enforcement. The drone it taking away any rights the "target" has even if they have not fired upon anyone, just because they are identified by someone who does not like them as a target. This would be the same as placing a remote triggered bomb on their vehicle instead of arresting them.

People generally don't see a problem with a police sniper taking out a suspected criminal who is holding a hostage. If military fighter jets had been able to shoot down the airliners before they hit the WTC on 9/11 I think most people would have agreed it was the right thing to do. Would we be crying that they didn't get trials first? If a drone strike in the final moments could have prevented McVeigh from detonating his bomb in OKC would you say don't do it? Holder was just answering a hypothetical question about whether there could be any situation where a drone could be used against American citizens in the US. He wasn't proposing any change in the law or saying we could use them for executions. A drone is simply another kind of weapon, and who knows maybe it could be the right weapon for the job in some crazy scenario, so Holder was right in not completely ruling out the possibility.

Secondly, though, in theory, the US military is restricted in the use of force on American soil, the FBI is not. Drones have been budgeted for and researched over many administrations with full Congress approval. They didn't just appear magically when Bush became president.

Where does this idea that Bush ran the country into the ground come from? You do realize right that the housing market collapse for instance is the result of policies enacted during Clinton's administration right? All these deals with China and the outsouring etc. happened under Clinton as well. The U.S. economic recession is the result of policies enacted decades ago that caught up with the changing world.
