The FBI performed nearly 2.8 million background checks on people wanting to buy guns in December, a record month that capped a record year.
The numbers from the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System on Wednesday did not show how many firearms buyers actually took home from federally licensed gun stores. Some purchasers may have bought more than one weapon.
Data is made publicly available, but the FBI but does not generally try to explain increases in the number of checks.

See.....A fe winnocent kids get killed people shot in a theater and gun Makers get rich on the blood..America land of the TOTALY insane...Yea lets arm our Newborns..Lets arm our Dogs and Cats lets arm our Enemies...Oh we already do that.....
I can agree with "the right to bear arms" but with limits! No civilian should be allowed to own "military style" assult weapons with high capacity magazines and bullets designed for no other purpose than killing people. Hollow round and military grade ammunition should not be on the market!
No sportsman hunts wildlife with a semi automatic weapon. Personal and property protection cannot be accomplished with a high powered military style assult weapon. A pistol is quicker to deploy in any emergency situation where fast response matters. A pistol is a deterent, not a mass killing machine! Most people couldn't hit the "broad side of a barn" with a hand gun anyway, so actual killings would be minimal. However, returned fire would end the threat.
Our "gun problem" is not about owning or carrying guns, it's about the type of weapons manufacturers are allowed to sell into the civilian market.

A sad attempt at sarcasm. I believe that you are, in fact, dumber than those upon whom you direct your ridicule.
Its about time....... If everyone carried then the world would be a lot safer place.
Okay, carry a pistol. Who "carries" an assult rifle wth a 30 round clip? Remember the days of Al Capone when his guys "carried" Tommy guns? Was this for "protection"? No, this was for killing – nothing else.
The world is NOT a "safer place" with assult weapons in the hands of untrained civilians and criminals! Gun manufacturers should be prohibited from selling these weapons to anyone other than the military. Go after the manufacturers first and stop this madness!
The writers of the 2nd Amendment could not have foreseen what their "right to bear arms" would someday be twisted into! By the way, their true intent was to have citizens armed but also organized in a militia to protect the country from foreign threats. They did not intend to allow every "Tom, Dick and Jane" the right to buy guns to kill our own citizens!
