State Department: Clinton not dodging Benghazi hearings

By Adam Levine

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is "on the mend" and working from home, the State Department’s spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Clinton had been recovering from a bout of stomach flu last week when she fainted and ended up with a concussion. Clinton informed the Senate Foreign Relations and House Foreign Affairs committees this weekend that she would be unable to testify at upcoming hearings about the deadly events in Benghazi, Libya, at the advice of her doctors. In her place, deputies Thomas Nides and Bill Burns will testify on Thursday.

Clinton was finishing her cover letter to Congress to accompany the independent Benghazi review that was just completed, as she recuperates at home from her concussion injury and stomach virus, spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.

The classified version of the independent review is being sent to Congress Tuesday afternoon, and an unclassified version could be released for public consumption as early as Wednesday, the same day that former Ambassador Thomas Pickering and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen, who led the review, brief congressional committees about their findings.

Nuland said that it was "completely untrue" that Clinton was using her illness to avoid testifying this week about Benghazi, allegations made in the New York Post opinion page and on Fox News by former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton.

"She's going to be absolutely fine. She is working at home," Nuland said. "She's been on the phone and in e-mail contact with senior staff. She's been working on other issues - Syria, the DPRK [North Korea] today. These are people that don't know what they are talking about."

In a statement from Clinton's doctors released over the weekend, Clinton was told to "rest and avoid any strenuous activity." The doctors said the "strongly advised her to cancel all work events for the coming week."

Typically, a concussion will lead to doctors’ ordering “brain rest,” said Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s chief medical correspondent.

"You almost want to give the brain rest as well. Doctors will literally say don't read anything, don't watch television, don't get on a computer. You really want to put the brain to rest for a while to allow the brain to recover from a concussion," Gupta said. "The best way to get recovery, full recovery, from a concussion is to really not do anything."

Gupta said the fact Clinton is at home, and not the in the hospital, suggests the nature of the injury may not be too severe.

"I think they obviously would have a low threshold for having her in the hospital. In this case, she's not. So I think the antenna is lowered here," Gupta explained over the weekend.

Gupta, a neurosurgeon, guessed that recovery would take about a week, though he was not privy to her specific case.

"What you want to do is you slowly reintroduce activity, you know, allow someone to start reading, maybe engaging in some exercise, and seeing if any of those symptoms come back. If they come back, then, you're sort of back on rest again. So, it can be back and forth for a little bit. My guess is a week. That's typical with a mild concussion," he said.

Nuland said Tuesday that Clinton’s doctors “and all the people close to her are trying to encourage her to take the time she needs to be well.”

In a letter to the Senate and House foreign affairs committees, Clinton said she "looks forward to continuing to engage them in January, and she will be open to whatever they consider appropriate in that regard," Nuland said earlier this week.

She's not? She has a funny way of showing it. The buck stops at her on this one. They treated 9/11 just like a walk in the park and reality bit us on the nose. 9/11 is like Christmas to the jihadists.

So why does the media ignore any questionable activities of this administration? It's like the Reagan years – they're Teflon-coated. (look up William J. Casey/Iran Contra)

Hillary is an attorney. She needed to wait until the report came out first to be sure that her sworn testimony dovetailed. Four Americans dead and the last page of the report recommends that NO ONE be reprimanded? No one holds any responsibility? Wow, sounds just like the Obama administration. Except, this was murder that was enabled by the State Department. Susan Rice not getting a promotion is not enough. Saying "We're sorry" is not enough. Will the media continue to look the other way?

Embassy and consulate security has been an issue for decades, kudos to Clinton for realizing that the State Department needed to be reviewed thoroughly and that change had to be made. We will now proudly be able to say that our people overseas are safer under Obama than they ever were under Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton or Bush Jr. Clinton deserves a lot of praise for this.

She has no reason to dodge it now because now that the Independent Report has been released, there was no finding of individual breach of duty so she is off the hook, and where it found there was finding grossly inadequate management in at least two departments and lack of Congressional funds she can fire a couple of people and ask the do nothing Congress for money to prevent this from happening again. But it is too bad it took an independent investigation report to tell us that.

Why not just push the hearings back a week or two? They do stuff like that all the time in Congress. Ms. Clinton certainly should be medically cleared to testify by then, since apparently is already working from home.

Not that it matters one whit. Senate hearings are simply a orchestrated public spectacle, designed to give the appearance that they are trying to accomplish something. It will go like this: The Republicans will grill her, the Democrats will coddle her, and in the end they'll agree to disagree. All at taxpayers' expense.

You are absolutely right! But, Hillary is needed. No one can answer the questions that directly involve her as to WHO, WHAT, WHEN, and WHERE! No one at State can answer questions directly involving her. And, she and the president know it! I agree. Push this hearing back until she is fully "recovered"!

Hillary is HIDING! Period! She does NOT want to be grilled and have to lie again about this situation. Pure and simple! What I cannot figure out is why isn't the press asking WHAT doctor, WHAT hospital, WHAT is the official diagnosis???? If I missed more than 2 days teaching at my school, I had to return with a doctor's note saying I was able to work? WHAT is all this concussion foolishness!???? And, she wants to be president??? I hope Congress has the presense of mind to hold up John Kerry from becoming Secretary of State until Hil gets herseld up to the Hill and makes some attempt to come clean (which is all in the wording as we have learned from other Clinton situations!). Oh, and she was well enough to auther an 8 .... count 'em .... 8 page letter from herself in response to the report being released that was less than favoragle!

Hillary was able to write an 8 page response addressing the report released yesterday!. Have you read it? Amazing she was well enough to work her way through all that on such short notice! And in such detail! With a concussion that effects the brain and a person's thought process. She is something else.

One of the bad things we dodged when Romney lost the election was the prospect of John Bolton as Secretary of State. He was a disaster as UN Ambassador and would have been worse as Secretary of State. It is hard to tell if Gov. Romney's foreign policy ineptness was a natural lack of ability or bad advice from Bolton.

I told a friend of mine, just wait and see.. They will claim she is trying to get out of testifying..
Concussions can leave you confused.. And I I were her. I would not testify until i was well either..Those that know nothing of how a concussion can effect people, might think she should.. But the truth is.. It would be wrong for her to do so.
Wrong for her to even be in public until she has a clean bill of health.
Waiting a little bit of time certainly isn't going change anything.. Except the nerves of those who want it done NOW~!

She did not do this and it was her fault that this happen. Why did they send Ms. Rice out on every talk show to put out this lie and Not Hillary? It was not Ms. Rice's job to so. So To bring up this "you lost the election" is wrong. If you look at what the Secretary of State has been doing the last few months, maybe you will see something. It was the repugs and teaboogers IN THE HOUSE that failed to provide money that the WH requested for additional embassy security. In fact, these same people in the house who are now criticizing the WH are the ones who cut more than 450 MILLION from embassy security since 2010. From the report:

"The board cited a lack of resources as at least partly to blame.

"The solution requires a more serious and sustained commitment from Congress to support State Department needs," it said."

Video conferencing. Of course, if she really wanted to talk about it, she would have done it by video. Forget it, the mere fact that she is not testifying and sending others to do it for her is evidence enough of her lies (videotape) and not sending in help for the four that were murdered. She wouldn't testify 'cause she would never tell the truth about her ineptness and lack of empathy for these men.

Hilary Clinton has now twice dodged a bullit. The first time she didn't have a concussion. She just left the country. It's the week of Christmas, children have been murdered, and this woman does not feel the obligation to come before the American people and be held accountable for her negligence? She could set a future date for the hearing so there wouldn't be all this dialogue. She doesn't care. She only cares about her political career – that's all she's ever cared about. And she'll do anything to get what she wants – even stay married to an adulterer, and lie for the president while the families of the victims suffer.. The president also needs to be questioned. This all points back to the White House – per General Patreaus' testimony.

65 year old, reportedly ill enough to become reportedly extremely dehydrated, dehydrated enough to reportedly faint, reportedly causing an injuryserious enough to be reportedly a concussion – that seems a couple stair-flights over a "low-threshold" level to be evaluated at a hospital. That'swell into Mrs. Clinton's own "suspension of disbelief" range!

One of my students in college, otherwise healthy, got the stomach flu and ended up in the ER extremely dehydrated, with an IV. She had bed rest for two days... but she did not get admitted to the hospital.

I guess I am unclear why you think a person with flu, dehydration, and a concussion must stay in a hospital. They are not trivial health problems, but hospitals are not places you put sick people. They are places you put people who are so sick they need high levels of health care. If Clinton's dehydration has been treated and her concussion is only mild, it seems unlikely she needs that level of care... plus she probably has on-call nurses at her home anyways (I'd make a joke about the nurses and her husband, but since his heart attack I think he's stopped skirt-chasing as much).

Secretary Clinton has been serving this administration for the past several years, and by far improved the American image abroad more than any of the recent Secretary of State through tactful diplomacy. Her service to this country is necessary and relevant, so before you open your mouths about wasting taxpayer dollars you should understand the interests of this nation first. Instead of criticizing people who serve this country, take a good look at yourself and ask what have you done for this country.

Liberals are killing this country with their coverups, their easing of the laws and punishments, and their no child left behind ideas that only bring down the abilities of smart kids to learn. I am sorry but you claim to be a physician so I am moved to reply that you are out of line. Concussion is a very serious condition and "brain rest" is the recommendation. My wife was injured in an accident that caused concussion. Initially we thought she would be fine but after a few days she developed severe post-concussive syndrome. She was not able to work for a year and was required to have "brain rest" I saw this happen in real time. She is a very intelligent person (PhD) and had to stay home and do nothing – even soaps on TV were too challenging for her. It is now over a year and she still cannot work full-time. This is a very severe condition not to be trivialized or ignored. I have trouble believing you are a real physician since you seem to know very little about this extremely challenging life-changing debilitation.

The Intelligence Community didn't give the White Houseor the State Department the full scope of the operations in Benghazi so as to protect sources and information networks. The CIA was also on the ground there, unbeknownst to most of the world, we the people don't have any need to know the details of classified operations. The additonal security requested by the consulate was denied by Congress (both parties) not the President, not the Secretary of State and certainly not Susan Rice. Go ahead and keep spouting your conspiracy theories, you come off as nutty as every other loon out there suggesting you wear a tin-foil hat. When he wanted to defend Americans. But no one is going after that end of the story. It's not been answered by the White House.

Classified Operations are not and should not be shared with the general public. There could be a number of reasons assets were pulled back. The information you have could actually be incorrect. The general himself could've ordered the assets back...the bottom line is you don't know. And we shouldn't know until all facts and investigations are complete.

No one has said she'll never testify, but when you're a 65-year old woman, who had a mild concussion and the stomach flu, you take things seriously. You take precautions, like not going to work, or doing limited work from home.

I don't really get what anyone is trying to prove here by saying OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SHE'S DOING A LITTLE WORK!

Do you think she's not sick or injured? That's a pretty poor excuse of an argument, and a fascinatingly -BAD- conspiracy theory.

And, why did the Secret Service not take her to the hospital for a MRI? That would be standard operating procedure for anyone holding office, such as this position. Pathetic lies again. Just like making up the video as the excuse for Libya. So many CNN suckers drinking the kool-aid. Fools!

Wow, Bolton showing himself a cowardly, mean, arrogant, and ignorant loudmouth.

Not that it's s surprise from him, but just think – that the sort of guy that Bush 43 thought would be a splendid fellow in charge of America's foreign policy.

Wow. So you think the Secret Service wouldn't have brought her to the hospital to get an MRI after the SOS hit her head? MRI is standard protocol for even young athletes bumping their heads. You gotta be kidding me. This Clintonism is very reminiscent of Whitewatergate....perhaps the files will mysteriously appear on a table in the White House someday soon. So tired of the lies and deception from this regime.

Duh! It only looks like she is dodging the panel! 3 months after 9/11 and the Obama Administration still hasn't figured out what happened and why! You don't get any dumber than that! Or more likely, this is the Chicago Way – corruption! corruption! Corruption is Obama.

So they're sending two deputies in her place on Thursday?...were they in the 'situation room'?...did they tell Ambassador Rice to tell everyone it was because of a video? No, the one who was and did is now feigning an injury and once again, letting someone else take the blame.

The SoS doesn't sit in the situation room. She's briefed on what the situation room deems relevant to her job.

The Situation Room has the President, Chief of Staff, Sec. of Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and relevant experts. That's it.

Learn about government before criticizing it.

Uuumm, the situation room has a num b er of seats. You need to look at some of the public photos from that night and even during the Osama Bin Laden night. Hillary was there.

Such a shame she won't be able to incriminate herself under oath. The US Government at the highest levels let one of our own Diplomats die while they watched and did nothing. The Ambassador had been in control of up to 15,000 shoulder fired missiles in a warehouse secured by the SEALs he was ultimately killed with. Islamic Militants in Syria were getting their hands on them directly from us. Us, giving big boy guns to Al Qaeda. Enough Said. Look up Col. Anthony Shaffer on the subject.

Hoping Hillary has a speedy recovery. Looking forward to her candidacy for president in 2016. Only mean spirited scrooges in the GOP/Tea Party would wish Hillary ill will during her recovery.

It seems to be the Democrats who wished her a slow recovery – one which wouldn't allowed her to testify on Thursday, more than a week after she fell.

PARTYING. You have to be joking. Any polls that you read shows that the views of the US have greatly improved since Hillary took over and started jetting around the world "partying" as you say.
