Medal of Honor recipient victim of assault

By Larry Shaughnessy

Dakota Meyer, one of America's most-recent Medal of Honor recipients, was the victim in an altercation that left him with minor injuries, Kentucky authorities said Thursday.

Meyer was taken to Westlake Hospital early Sunday morning after a scuffle at the Red Barn Event Center near his home in Columbia, according to Trooper 1st Class Billy Gregory of Kentucky State Police.

Meyer, 24, was treated and released. There was no word on what instigated the incident.

State police Thursday arrested 18-year-old Kanissa'a Thompson of Columbia and charged him with second-degree assault.

The Event Center, located in a dry county in south-central Kentucky, was hosting a party celebrating nearby Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer national championship.

In September 2011, President Barack Obama awarded Meyer the nation's highest military decoration for risking his life to save 36 U.S. and Afghan troops caught in a blistering firefight.

Meyer was promoted to sergeant before he left the Marines.

CNN attempted to contact Meyer through his book publisher, but had not received a response late Thursday afternoon.

The Medal of Honor: What is it?

Why is this not being reported as a hate crime? Black on white crime.

Amazing to see some of the uneducated comments on this board. It appears that every story turns into a right versus left thing. This is why we need to do away with the two party system because people need to select leaders on qualifications, not party. This is why the county is heading towards destruction. Drop party politicis and come back to the center if we want to improve this country.

I hope the Sgt. is doing fine. Speaking as a veteran, I am a bit appauld by the altercation toward an MOH winner, but I have no idea what the altercation was about. To fellow vets and current brothers and sisters at arms on here, bickering about who is better, stronger, whatever, we all fought the same fight. Show some respect for those who you served with and those you served for and just belong to the band of brothers and sisters who do an did what we chose to do for our country. God bless America and her citizens.

Medal of Honor and this altercation are two different stories as the fight was not about medals or military but from the event it was in,the fight was most likely over a woman.Shame on the media for exploiting this story into something it's not, just like the Martin/Zimmerman case.

First of all, the guy ought to be happy to be alive. He attacked a combat experienced Marine. I think that there's a lot to be said for Sgt.Meyer not handing this idiot his guts on a silver platter! I'm pretty sure that Sgt. Meyer held back so as to not bring a negative light on himself, the MOH and the Corps!

to Duc 749: I would take myself and all my buddies that got kicked out of AF for being over weight against your Marine squad. Marines are bad ass at war but you put them in a bar room fight situation and they don't know how to act. Especially when they are alone talking all the trash how bad ass they are. I respect the marines for what they do and what they have to go through but what marines think they are when they are at a bar is a whole different thing. You dont have your guns, kevlar and 12 inch knives to get you going. Again I respect you but dont start trash talking about bar fights because you are a marine

You know this how? Just because someone is a combat veteran, doesn't make them some sort of super soldier who can kick butt and chew bubble gum all day long. They're normal people just like everyone else. When I was in the Army and still in basic training, one of the drill sergeants in the neighboring company had been present during the Battle of Mogadishu. He was actually portrayed in the movie Blackhawk Down by Ewan McGregor. Granted they changed his name as the real person was named Stebbins, and not Grimes. You can look up why his name was changed if you want. In any event, he won the Silver Star for his actions there, and while he was a fair sized person, he wasn't anything special.

I love it when these left wingers get on here and blame everything on Pres Bush!! It cracks me up! Obama is not responsible for anything at all! Certainly not for completely ignoring our Americans cries for help in Syria huh?! Gosh no! Couldn't be! Oh right, it wasn't his fault he was on vacation or was he at one of his weekly regular million dollar parties! Oh no that's right he was on vacation so it wasn't his responsibility to send help to our embassy in Syria while they were begging for help which was near by and they were under attack and being murdered! Please shut up already with your whining and playing the blame game. Remember this is an article about a Marine who was attacked!

Billy, a SNITCH is a criminal who is caught by police and tries to get a lesser punishment by agreeing to give testimony about other criminals activities. Also known as a criminal informant.

An ordinary person or victim who reports information to police for the purpose of assisting them in apprehending a criminal is just a concerned citizen doing their jobs, which is commendable. The term snitch certainly does not apply.

Why there are so many silly people who misuse the word snitch and have no idea what it means is a mystery, but I have to attribute it to mass ignorance spread by the hip-hop culture, as that seems to be where the word is used most often.

ZERO - Oh what an uninformed liberal tool you are. More Military and Civilians have been killed and maimed under Obozo that in all the preceding years combined. If he is such a dove and opposed to the conflict in the middle east he would have ended our involvement during his first two years when he had total control of the government. Now to the Marine MOH recipient, Marines are given the tools to bring decisive fight to the enemy and discipline to exercise discretion and restraint. My salute to the man for exercising both and allowing the proper authorities to handle the issue of a street punk looking for "cred". Hope he likes bubba in jail.

To say you are uninformed would be an understatement. How many people – Americans and Iraqis – died in George Bush's war? And who was it that ordered the invasion of Afghanistan? (Answer for you Conservatives who seem to have a short memory: George W. Bush.) And while he was playing the role of commander-in-chief, he was also driving the country into bankruptcy. (In case you have forgotten, Bush never included the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan in his budget and that is the source of most of the federal deficit today.) Obama has ordered the withdrawal of combat troops from Afghanistan by 2014 and he has resisted calls for interfering in Syria.

September 11, 2001. After that, the president sent troops to Afghanistan to drive out the terrorists. If he didn't, bin Laden would have attacked more, more innocent Americans would have died, and he would still be alive today. Don't talk about something until you know why we did what we did.

I hate it when I have to feel ashamed of a self-identified vet, but I am ashamed of you. First, let's just look at one aspect of Bush's war 'plan' (sic) – sending in troops WITHOUT a plan and with inadequate resources and PPE, allowing time for the Taliban to regroup and build. The wars in the Middle East are Bush's wars, he lied to the American people in order to justify invading Iraq, he was responsible for the big 2007 surge in troops while the improvised war methodology was low, Obama led a surge with the increased IED attacks and need for more US personnel self-protection, the enemy increased sophistication and fighting escalation has nothing to do with the current President, but the withdrawals do, What is it about extreme right wingers that has them insisting on a self-inflicted ignorance?

Yeah, because guys who come back from war never start fights at bars... infantrymen are all a bunch of well-behaved choir boys when they go out, and they're always minding their own business when fights start... This story could go either way.

Meyer, like all humans, has faults. Since his opponent was charged, not Meyer, we have to assume the police believe he is not to blame. That Medal of Honor will definitely get some attention in the courtroom. Meyer deserves better than to be attacked in his own country.

He is a hero and there are so many others like him, most of which will never receive a medal, but should. However I must say Marines like to start fights, seen it and read it a hundred times.

The police didn't arrest or charge Meyer, they arrested and charged his opponent. So we need to wait until actual facts are released. Right now, we only have a great media-grabbing knee-jerk going on – MOH winner attacked! Oh noes!

Unless we can find a way to glue a MOH to his forehead, most people will not know they're dealing with a national treasure. I agree that Marines like to start fights, that why they make great servicemembers, but so do young punks. I've seen that a hundred times too. And young punks have zero respect except for those more violent then themselves, and have no clue what a MOH is and what it takes to win one. I think Thompson will be getting schooled on that very very soon, likely by THE JUDGE.

The Medal of Honor is awarded for extraordinary courage in the face of the enemy. It has nothing to do with physical prowess or fighting abilities, but with whether or not you have the guts to do what others won't. I had the distinct honor of serving under one, and I am still in awe of what this very (physically) small man did when the chips were down.

No, the embarrassing part is having a name like Kanissa'a... Just because someone receives the Medal of Honor doesn't mean they're MMA fighters who can kick anyone's ass. It means they did something "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty at great risk to one's life".

I don't think you quite understand how the real world is, so I will make a futile attempt to explain it to you anyway. The Marine you are embarrassed about served gallantly above and beyond the call of duty to save lives of his fellow Marines and Afghan troops while engaged in a heavy firefight. That my friend is courage. That does not mean he is invincible, nor is he superhuman in strength. What it makes him is a man of character and courage. My question to you you think the punk he was assaulted by will have the courage to sign up in the Marines and put his boots in the sand? Would you? I doubt it.

Do you really believe that all it takes is courage? It also takes ignorance. Going across the globe to fight people they don't even know on behalf of special interest is very ignorant. So when short sighted and ignorant people say that our soldiers are fighting for their country it is insulting to those in our country who don't want out youth or tax dollars to be invested in propping up dictators and butalizing other people across the globe. Besides he is a marine after all he should be tough enough to take an ass whipping. No shame in getting whipped, happens to us all. This kid should get a slap on the wrist for an assault which is what assaults warrant.

This is America, he should not have to be prepared to fight at every moment. Unfortunately we have a lot of stupid young men who want to "prove" something. Sgt. Meyer has nothing to prove, he proved what kind of man he is.

Active Duty Retired USAF NCO here. You are sorely mistaken my ignorant friend. Torture is sometimes justified in getting information. Just not wholesale the way it has been used the last few years and definitely not the way it was employed or publicized at Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq. Any idiot should know that you don't take pictures in a prison and you don't publicize the ways or from whom you get information, legally or illegally. It's called Operational Security. And I am never happy when a war is started–it means diplomacy has failed and hotter heads have prevailed. Personally, I'm just happy this nation got these B**S**T*RD(s)!!. There's still a lot more work to do in the defense of our freedoms and there always will be!! My Dad's funeral was on September 11, 2001 in Los Angeles California at 10:AM Pacific time. This was the time all hell was breaking loose in New York, Washington DC, & Pennsylvania. LA/California (my home area of my home state) was the destination city and/or state of all of 4 aircraft hijacked as populated missiles and destroyed on that disastrous day 11 years ago. For me and my family the day was already a sh**ty day. I feel for all of those who lost loved ones that day: Whether In the aircraft, In the towers, or On the ground no matter where it happened. BTW I'm a retired USAF NCO who finished his career with a USAF Special Operations Squadron overseas in NorthEast Asia. My units went to war a few times between 1978-1998 and I'm always sorry when it happens because it means diplomacy has failed and sometimes rash decisions have brought us to the brink again. In my 20 years plus of active duty I attended memorial services for around 30 USAF Airmen: Some pilots & Some ground crew, Some related to combat & Some related to training, & Some just dead because they were in the wrong place at the right time & it was their time. I never want to see someone dead, no matter their religious beliefs, but the world is better off without some people in it. People like Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, & Moammar Khaddafy. God Bless all of our troops past, present and future. Hurrah and Aim High!!

Hmmmm I'm pretty sure that going above and beyond the call of duty does not make him a super marine nor does it mean he can't get his @ss beat! Plain and simple I am friends with marines and alot of Spec ops, know what I can beat some and some I can't. I happen to be trained in more fighting "skills" then the marines I know. They know this and choose not to spar or fight with me because I have more hand to hand skill then they do. I still have the highest amount of respect for them, but they are by no means a super hero.
