U.S. Navy positions ships to monitor North Korea launch

Editor's Note: The sourcing in the story was changed to Department of Defense officials. The original story did not accurately describe the source.

By Barbara Starr

The Navy is moving some warships into position to monitor a possible upcoming North Korean launch of a long-range ballistic missile, U.S. Department of Defense officials said Thursday.

The USS Benfold and the USS Fitzgerald - both guided missile destroyers - are moving into positions, although the Navy declined to give their exact location. They are being sent to monitor for a possible launch and "provide reassurance to allies," according two Defense Department officials.

It's possible two additional ships will be sent in the next few days, the officials added.

North Korea appears to be working toward its goal of launching a rocket later this month, with a recent satellite image showing preparations continuing around the site.

The December 4 image provided to CNN by satellite imagery company GeoEye shows increased activity by workers on the launch pad, an imagery analyst told CNN.com's Security Clearance. The launch pad activity was not evident in an image from DigitalGlobe taken three days earlier.

The U.S. is also, “rapidly moving assets to pacific region because of the ballistic missile threat in the region,” the Commander of U.S. Pacific Command, Adm. Samuel J. Locklear III told reporters at a Pentagon briefing Thursday morning in reference to the North Korean threat.

"I don't believe that a launch is imminently imminent, but what we are seeing is sort of what they call the beginning of the end of launch preparations," Allison Puccioni, an analyst with Jane's IHS who writes about North Korean imagery for Jane's Defense Weekly, said last week. "Prior to this, we had not seen much in the way of rocket launch pad activity, but now we are seeing some significant stuff happening," such as additional work on the rocket launch tower, she said.

North Korea says it intends to launch a rocket it claims is for science and research purposes sometime between December 10 and December 22. The United States has condemned the test because the launch employs the same technology that would be used in a test of ballistic missiles. The launch would also be a violation of two separate resolutions passed by the United Nations Security Council.

"We believe it is still in contradictory to the U.N. Security Council resolutions that because of the nature of the type of missile that they'll be firing and the implications it has for ballistic missile type of activity somewhere down the road and the destabilizing impact that will have on the security environment throughout the region, not just on the peninsula," Adm. Locklear said.

In a recent report from Newsmax, they claim that between October 1, 2010 thru September 30, 2011 that the U.S. Border Patrol and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection division of the Department of Homeland Security arrested 327,577 aliens illegally entering the U.S. JUST along the U.S. – Mexican border and another 6,552 illegals along U.S. coastlines.

Of the illegals captured along the Mexican border, 46,997 were listed as ‘other than Mexican’. Among the ‘other than Mexican’ were people from countries listed as ‘special interest countries’ such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Somalia, Tunisia, Syria, Uzbekistan, Jordan and Indonesia. Looking at the countries of origin, I think it’s safe to assume that many of them were Muslim, making me wonder how many may have terrorist ties.

Maybe they want to pick tomatoes? I don't think so.

They are testing for soft spots to smuggle nukes across the Mexican border.

................Hm, but where to put them.

How about in the bottom of Yellowstone lake atop the thin 3 mile thick porus cork over the super volcano.

If that sucker blows, radioactive ash 10 to 3 foot thick all the way to the Ohio valley.

All farmland, DEAD. Livestock, DEAD. Rivers, DEAD. Fish, DEAD. Transportation as we know it, DEAD. 200 million, DEAD and dying! 75% of the country DEAD in a month and it will continue to erupt for three months.

This has a high probability precisely because Obama, Holder and Congress will not secure the Mexican border and enforce existing immigration laws.

They LOVE illegals and weak national security!

However take heart, MAYBE we can knock down a ICBM from North Korea with the new airborne laser if the launch is patterned like the staged marsh mellow tests to date.

    Lol, to funny!

But the Pacific based Laser cannot target a beat up pickup truck crossing the Mexican border in the dead of night hauling a couple nukes to Yellowstone.

Instead of 'repenting' and all the unnecessary self-guilt and flagellation that involves, a more objective solution might be to use the opportunity presented by North Korea's launch.

It will be a great opportunity to test Patriot missile technology by launching that 'anti-missile missile' at the 'New Dear Leader's' latest toy, if the latter gets airborne this time?

Just wanted to let you that the North Koreans are posturing for the upcoming elections in the South. North Korea wants the Saenuri -party to loose because they feel that this party will strengthen it's stance against them. The Rocket is a bargaining chip to get attention.
btw, the north did threaten another round of attacks on Yeongpyeong-do or other boarder towns if the rocket is shot down.
The last time this happened was back in 2010/11 when the 2 Korea's nearly went to full out war with each other. Trust me, if the North decided this time to engage the South militarily the results will be catastrophic.
Both sides are equally stubborn and lacking in negotiating skills.

Years ago the British colonials would meet foreign natives who could not read or speak English. The misguided reaction by the white man was to shout their language louder at the natives in the misguided belief that they were deaf as opposed to being unable to comprehend the English language. The crass modern equivalent of that bad behavior is to type on ipublic nternet fora using capital letters. Even if the 'New Dear Leader' of north Korea were to read johnnydoughboy's impassioned appeal in stridently typed capital letters, it would be unlikely to have an impact.

The 'New Dear Leader' of North Korea would much rather watch a bootleg copy of the latest Disney cartoon I am sure, and is thus most unlikely to 'give a Donald Duck' for johnnydoughboy's appeal for reason.

Apples and Oranges....Apples and Oranges. I don't recall the USA having thousands of troops on the border of Germany prior to WWII. South Korea is plenty capable of defending against North Korea until thousands arrive from Okinawa, not to mention the USA's ability to strike from afar. We should maintain enough assets in the zone (naval and otherwise) but the boots on the ground should be South Korean.

Are you willing to send your sons to die for South Korean freedom? Are you willing to give all the money you have to support them? If not, please keep quiet and stop lecturing others. I have nothing against South Korea. But I'm tired of everything being our responsibility.

the way that i see it is that there is so much strife in this world. you have crazy middle easterners willing to blow up anyone and anything if you say something that they say is resentfull to their "God". you have countries that have little to nothing that are willing to try anything to gain financial support ( ie North Korea ) you have the pirates just off the coast of eastern africa. all this needs policing. who do countries come to for this policing is The United States. why. because they have the resorses to help. money. aid. a kick ass military. the United States needs to keep up a strong military because they are ALWAYS in need of their policing skills.

and i am Canadian saying this.

sad to say but if there was more stability and less nut jobs in this world. the world's police force. the United States Armed Forces would have a chance to sit back more and enjoy this wonderful world we live in.

North Korea has constantly tried to attempt assassination attempts on the South, 2 years ago they shelled a South Korean island and killed a few people. This was repores right here on CNN. Instead US prefers to help a country whit a lot of allys and whit full ability to defend themselves instead of helping those who really need help.

No it isn't the 1950s, but check out North Korea's "air force". They are still using air craft that we got rid of in the 50s and 60s. They have old prop planes that actually remind me of something from WWII. The only credible threat from North Korea is their missile program which is quite advanced.

Americans are such suckers. We let our government convince us that these other countries are such a huge threat to us and that their capabilities match ours so that will keep accepting their calls for bigger defense budgets. Meanwhile, CHINA, which is certainly technologically superior to North Korea, just succeeded in their first airplane landing on a ship THIS YEAR, something the US has been doing since 1912.

The US Military annual budget 2004–2007 is over $400B (~3.6% GDP)
The People's Republic of China Military annual budget 2004–2007 is estimated from anywhere between $30B and $130B (1-2.5% GDP) depending on sources.

Your comment really doesn't make any sense at all but I'm glad you feel safe. Last I checked we fought a bloody conflict with North Korea who at the time had even less sophisticated weapon systems than they do right now. How many planes did the North Vietnamese land on carriers back in the 60's? Thats right zero and how did that war turnout for us? No one is saying that we should fear an invasion by the North Koreans or the Chinese because as of right now neither country has the assets to pull off such a mission but to somehow think we are untouchable is just plain ignorant. The U.S. has interests all over the globe and the world is a global economy in this day and age so its high time you civilians stop just thinking about the continental U.S. and realize that by hitting South Korea our economy would also be effected so yeah we need to be in the region and we need to monitor the capabilities of North Korea.

War is not a sporting event where opponents of equal strength battle it out. North Korea does not have to match the U.S. in atomic weapons to be a threat, and they know it. Think about this, if they had five weapons, and then detonated two on the U.S., or against U.S. interests, and then said,"Which three U.S. cities do you want to lose now? Choose wisely, because even if you wipe all our cities out, we still got you!" What do you think the President would do? Gamble? Bluff? Fold? Retaliate in kind? Maybe not! Just sayin.'

What if a country with a stronger military than the US were somewhere in the world and sent ships near US shores when US were to test a missile? Do on to others ...? Troublemaker of the world.

That's the thing – there is no other country with a military even comparable to the US. We spend more on our military than the next 25 countries, combined. Now I'm not saying that it's a good thing, just pointing out the facts...

I wouldn't be shocked to find out that NK's last launch failure was actually a quiet shoot down by one of our assets, and likewise won't be surprised if we do it again.

I'm glad I didn't pay for a subscription to IHS for their various research products if that is the level of "intelligence". I would think attention to detail is kind of important, even if it's grammar.
