U.S. Navy positions ships to monitor North Korea launch

The Navy is moving some warships into position to monitor a possible upcoming North Korean launch of a long-range ballistic missile, U.S. Department of Defense officials said Thursday.
The USS Benfold and the USS Fitzgerald - both guided missile destroyers - are moving into positions, although the Navy declined to give their exact location. They are being sent to monitor for a possible launch and "provide reassurance to allies," according two Defense Department officials.
It's possible two additional ships will be sent in the next few days, the officials added.
North Korea appears to be working toward its goal of launching a rocket later this month, with a recent satellite image showing preparations continuing around the site.
The December 4 image provided to CNN by satellite imagery company GeoEye shows increased activity by workers on the launch pad, an imagery analyst told CNN.com's Security Clearance. The launch pad activity was not evident in an image from DigitalGlobe taken three days earlier.
The U.S. is also, “rapidly moving assets to pacific region because of the ballistic missile threat in the region,” the Commander of U.S. Pacific Command, Adm. Samuel J. Locklear III told reporters at a Pentagon briefing Thursday morning in reference to the North Korean threat.
"I don't believe that a launch is imminently imminent, but what we are seeing is sort of what they call the beginning of the end of launch preparations," Allison Puccioni, an analyst with Jane's IHS who writes about North Korean imagery for Jane's Defense Weekly, said last week. "Prior to this, we had not seen much in the way of rocket launch pad activity, but now we are seeing some significant stuff happening," such as additional work on the rocket launch tower, she said.
North Korea says it intends to launch a rocket it claims is for science and research purposes sometime between December 10 and December 22. The United States has condemned the test because the launch employs the same technology that would be used in a test of ballistic missiles. The launch would also be a violation of two separate resolutions passed by the United Nations Security Council.
"We believe it is still in contradictory to the U.N. Security Council resolutions that because of the nature of the type of missile that they'll be firing and the implications it has for ballistic missile type of activity somewhere down the road and the destabilizing impact that will have on the security environment throughout the region, not just on the peninsula," Adm. Locklear said.

In a recent report from Newsmax, they claim that between October 1, 2010 thru September 30, 2011 that the U.S. Border Patrol and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection division of the Department of Homeland Security arrested 327,577 aliens illegally entering the U.S. JUST along the U.S. – Mexican border and another 6,552 illegals along U.S. coastlines.
Of the illegals captured along the Mexican border, 46,997 were listed as ‘other than Mexican’. Among the ‘other than Mexican’ were people from countries listed as ‘special interest countries’ such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Somalia, Tunisia, Syria, Uzbekistan, Jordan and Indonesia. Looking at the countries of origin, I think it’s safe to assume that many of them were Muslim, making me wonder how many may have terrorist ties.

Years ago the British colonials would meet foreign natives who could not read or speak English. South Korea is plenty capable of defending against North Korea until thousands arrive from Okinawa, not to mention the USA's ability to strike from afar. We should maintain enough assets in the zone (naval and otherwise) but the boots on the ground should be South Korean.

No it isn't the 1950s, but check out North Korea's "air force". They are still using air craft that we got rid of in the 50s and 60s. They have old prop planes that actually remind me of something from WWII. The only credible threat from North Korea is their missile program which is quite advanced.

The Navy and Marines saved the day during the Korean War, and did so more than once. Nobody came close to kicking anything they owned! Gen. McArthur counted on them, as well as the Air Force to save his bacon. Nuff said!

People need to understand that there is NO WAY a ballistic missle would make it to the US from North Korea. I'm not saying that they couldn't have the capabilities to get it that far, but our Navy would blow that thing out of the sky before it even got half way across the Pacific.

Last I checked we fought a bloody conflict with North Korea who at the time had even less sophisticated weapon systems than they do right now. How many planes did the North Vietnamese land on carriers back in the 60's? Thats right zero and how did that war turnout for us? No one is saying that we should fear an invasion by the North Koreans or the Chinese because as of right now neither country has the assets to pull off such a mission but to somehow think we are untouchable is just plain ignorant. The U.S. has interests all over the globe and the world is a global economy in this day and age so its high time you civilians stop just thinking about the continental U.S. and realize that by hitting South Korea our economy would also be effected so yeah we need to be in the region and we need to monitor the capabilities of North Korea.

"Guided Missile Destroyer" means they are destroyers whose primary armament is guided missiles. We don't have ships whose primary mission is to destroy guided missiles.
And "destroyer" originally indicated small(er) ships designed to destroy gunboats.

The Aegis Combat System is an integrated naval weapons system developed by the Missile and Surface Radar Division of RCA, and now produced by Lockheed Martin. It uses powerful computers and radars to track and guide weapons to destroy enemy targets.

The problem with these comment boards is that trolls can post thier anonymous crap. With out the internet and the ability to comment on every article they would have no power to annoy anyone. Trolls would not stand in the mddle of Times Square and say the same stuff. But thanks to this wonderful idea of comment boards trolls can comment on every article without ever being seen. We get to see how brave, small minded and mean spirited they really are.
Everyone one wants to complain about the United States because its the easy thing to do, if you live here, help fix it or shut the hell up! If you don't live here and complain about us then feel free to contact your government leaders and ask them to refuse any financial aid or military support we might be offerring.
