Iran "finding ways" to supply more weapons to Hamas

By Barbara Starr

Iran is "finding ways to resupply Hamas" with long range rockets and other weapons even after the intense fighting between Hamas and Israel that ended in a cease-fire last week, a senior U.S. official told CNN.

The issue is sure to be a problem as Israel and Hamas work out further terms of the cease fire agreement.

Outgoing Israel Defense Minister Ehud Barak will be at the Pentagon on Wednesday and the topic of Iran arming Hamas is sure to be discussed.

One area of focus is the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, which is under intense surveillance by American and Israeli intelligence services using spy satellites to gather the latest on Iran's cargo ships and aircraft smuggling weapons into Gaza.

U.S. and Israeli officials said Iranian ships make their way from Bandar Abbas into the Red Sea and dock in Sudan. Some unload arms and missile parts, which are then smuggled over land into Sinai and then into Gaza's tunnels, according to Israeli and American officials.

Other ships dock further north and the goods are unloaded into tunnels that lead from the Sinai to Gaza. Iran wants to keep several routes open - especially if there is a crackdown on the ho`rizon from Egypt on the tunnels, officials believe.

Smuggling weapons to Gaza - the long way

"Its not so easy to get things into Gaza unless you use the tunnels and what the Egyptians seems to be doing with this agreement is moving toward an arrangement where what goes into Gaza goes in above ground," said Jon Alterman, a Middle East expert with the Center for Strategic & International Studies. "That may make it much harder to get weapons into Gaza."

After the cease-fire between Gaza and Israel was reached last week after eight days of violence, Israeli officials said Iran continued to try to push arms into Gaza, according to an Israeli military spokeswoman.

"It tried during the operation itself to push more and more rockets into the Gaza Strip," Israel Defense Force spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich said on CNN's "Situation Room" with Wolf Blitzer last Wednesday. "We know Iran is deeply involved with Hamas inside Gaza."

Israeli officials told CNN it has been impossible to shut down the hundreds of sophisticated tunnels in Gaza because of the millions of dollars in economic activity that are carried through there. Trusting Egypt with sensitive intelligence about weapons smuggling could be risky, Alterman said.

"After all if there is an emerging alliance between Hamas and the government of (Egyptian President) Mohamed Morsy. You have to be very careful about what you tell the government of Mohamed Morsy what you know about Hamas for fear it will go right back to Hamas," Alterman said.

The United States "strongly condemns" Iran's efforts to resupply Hamas with rockets, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told CNN on Monday.

Nuland said Iran is subject to a U.N. resolution prohibiting it from exporting arms and neighbors of Iran are obligated to enforce this measure.

"We are hopeful that the nations in the region take appropriate steps to halt any attempts to transport weapons to (Gaza), through their territory or airspace," Nuland said.

Efforts to seek comment from Iranian officials were unsuccessful.

Quoting an unnamed U.S. official reeks of propaganda. Looks like the military industrial complex is needing to be fed with that "highly successful " Afghanistan War winding down. Time to go invade and bomb another country to smithereens while our troops are fatigued and war weary, and our country is broke makes perfect sense to me.

I urge for all to read "Son of Hamas" by Mosab Hassan Yousef. A must read book for ignoramus Palestinian supporters on here; and for anyone in general who truly wants to understand the root of the conflict. Not land but radical Islam.

I admit I didn't read the book, but checked out a quick "bio" of the man, a very courageous man. I am as guilt as many to confuse the term "Palestinian" with Hamas, Hezbellah, etc. Thanx for the info.

Hamas represents all Palestinians the way Democrats represent all Americans. There are innocent children dying because Israel is slowly and methodically stealing Palestinian land while misguided Americans support the Zionist concept that God gave the Levant to Jews. It is insane, yet it is true. Americans support a terrorist state in Israel.

I always find the class in policy of 'Israel has the right to defend itself' yet "Palestine is not allowed to have weapons" amusing.

The US supplies Israel with countless weapons. Why shouldn't the other side be supplied too?

That's when you don't read newspaper or listen to news on TV or Radio. What shocks me even more is that you have access to the internet and still you are not informed? The word is "Defend". Why give weapons to people who intends to wipe your race off the face of this world? Weapons are for defending yourself and not attack innocent civilians – women and children. Hamas has no compaction in killing Jews...that means every Jews – infants, children, women...I mean all. More often people are blind to the facts because of ignorance.

You can compare more than 150 Palestinians were killed and 1200 injured and Israel 7 killed less than 50 injured.israel was cowardly bombing unarmed civilians from air if they hadn't those weapons now they were massacred by Israelis Israel even was afraid to launch a ground attack this is one of strongest militaries of is realy suitable for killing civilians.

        November 27, 2012 at 1:31 pm |
      • The Other

The difference is that Palestinian casualties were unintended – Israel did not bomb them, Hamas put their weapons near them – whereas EVERY civilian casualty was intended, as Hamas specifically and intentionally targets innocent civilians, including children.

Put their weapons inside news building hospitals or civilian homes?your reasons are ridiculous.attacking news building is unique in history of war.Israel deliberately attacked targets that werent military.i saw an F16 bombing one point several times that there was nothing no missiles no weapons in heart of city.

Hey PH, Israel spends money on bomb shelters etc...that is why there are less casualties in Israel, because they care about their citizens....hamas lobs rockets from school grounds, and builds ZERO shelters........syria just cluster bombed a school yard and killed over 10 children, on purpose...that is what muslims do.why dont you go cry about that?..muslims kill more muslims then anybody, including hundreds of "palestinians" dying in the syria go suck on an egg you uneducated trash...

The Russians thought the same and supplied Egypt and Syria with weapons and tactical advice twice. Egypt and Syria choose to invade Israel and got their collective butts kicked. Now they have their own problems, Saudi Arabia is fat and happy, Iraq is..whatever, so who's left. Iran is too far away to eliminate Israel so they send bottle rockets to Hamas.
The Khartoum Resolution says it all: no peace with Israel, no negotiations with Israel, and no recognition of Israel.

Israel should not exist. It was forced upon the Palestinians after WW2. We could have brought all the Jews here to America and given them the whole of Texas without any significant loss to the States. And we could have helped them wipe out the "Texans" to make room for the real Texans – the Jews.

Because the Palestinians are not the "other" side. That would be like if Cubans living in Florida decided that they wanted Florida for their own and started launching rockets. You wouldn't allow them to be armed to continue the attacks, you would allow the US defend its own lands, and prevent further attacks.

Turkey is an Islamic country. We give them tons of aid and weapons, they're a member of NATO. They're going to be building their own stealth fighters soon with the factory we designed for them.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, also get a lot of aid from us, and in the early 90s we fought a war to protect them. Pakistan gets billions from us. We spent a trillion dollars building schools and infrastructure in Iraq.

I could go on, but there's no point trying to educate a bigot who believes terrorism and murder are moral and justifiable.

We all need to have our memories just wiped. Maybe we will forget to hate each other and discover that we have something in common. Can't we all admit that every nation has its good and bad people. Every nation has things that they have done wrong. Anyway, the idea of peace is just one huge joke. We are destined to pass the legacy of hate to our children and their children if there is even a humankind left by the time we are done. We all could have sat at a table together and laughed and had a big potluck and then went fishing afterward. But hmmm, blowing each other to bits is just way better right?

If you read the news for the past 4 years, Hamas was quite for most part while Israel was assassinating Hamas leaders around the Globe and in Gaza. They went all the way to UAE to kill one of them with no regard to international law. For the rest of the ME, Hamas is not a terrorists so supplying with arms is not a violation. They need to defend themselves against the F16 we give the Israelis paid by yours truly tax dollar.

Maybe Hamas is a terrorist to Israel, but Israel is a genocidal, murderous regime not unlike the regime that used to rule South Africa. When you support Israel in murdering women and children, in stealing land from rightful owners, in assassinating people because of their resistance to your occupation, then you are complicit in condoning muder.

On a second note, you have equated Muslims to death, exhibited clear bias, prejudice and a racist ideology by articulating your visualizations of all Muslims/Arabs running around with guns and chanting slogans. Palestine was the name applied to the British protectorate carved out of the old Ottoman Empire after WW1. This name was based on Turkish usage of that same territory. It extended from Syria and Lebanon to the north, down to Egypt/Sinai and Arabia in the South along the western side of the Jordan River to the Med. Palestine was the working name of the area after WW2 used by the United Nations in working out the Jewish/Arab areas of control and influence. After the Jewish occupants, through a series of terrorist attacks against Arab civilians and the British Government, declared themselves to be the independent state of Israel, what had been the Palestine areas ended up under the supervision of Egypt (now known as the Gaza Strip) and Jordan (now known as the West Bank). So the only reason that there was never a "country" named Palestine was Israel's self-declaration in 1947.

Not a single Israeli can be found in Gaza. Are you telling us that the Israelis are "oppressing" Gaza by remote control? Further, if the good people of Gaza did not like the current arrangement they would NEGOTIATE A BETTER DEAL long ago. They had plenty of opportunities. Finally, Israel is doing everything it can to reduce the number of Palestinian casualties and this is, probably, the most important factor Palestinians still feel comfortable with continuation of the war. This, however, may change in case Israeli patience will end.

"Barrel of fish" is right on but really, blame the US instead of iran for preserving their hamas proxies as a barrel of fish? thats the problem with "Ben" and his fellow travelers, they can't see who their enemy really is and has been for the past 60 years! hey "ben" your enemy are the guys encouraging you to fight and die for them: the dysfunctional arab governments in he region encouraging you to act as their "barrel of fish"!!

Good for Iran and Hamas. The Palestinians need some sort of crediblke response and defense defense against Israel dropping 500 lb. bombs and using large missiles against apartment buildings, news people, bridges, etc. in Gaza. Hopefully, they can supply anti-aircraft missiles to use against Israeli planes an helicopters as well. They also need some armed drones to target Israeli military positions surrounding and imprisoning them in concentration camps otherwise known as Gaza and the West Bank and against Israeli ships providing an illegal blockade since the West is totally one-sided and against them.....

The bible also say the Jews look like Egyptions and Ethopians (Amos 9:7) the Scriptures also say there will people Pretending to be jews but are not but, they are the Church of Satan (Revelation 2:9) . Oh, help me out with this, jEwIsh people are suppose to be JUST ONE of the 12 Israelite tribes Right ? Then where are the other 11 tribes? The scriptures all sons of Jacob will live in Israel. Im certain israelites tribes of Dan, Naptali, isacaar, Ruben, Josheph, Levi, Simeon and Gad; would take Offense to being called Jew$ (tribes or Jew da , benjemin only) . Especially Ruben, Levi, And Simeon, all tribes of the decendents of Judeas(jews) older Brother.. Snd every has not turned on a Israel , that woukd imply The So called JEW ish people were liked by everyone in the first place. And the U.K and THE U.S Loves you guys. Who else matters. The people who Hates Israel the most just Happen to be the israelite's Historical Neihbors and in the palestians case Israel's Blood Relatives. Palestians are decendents Esau(Edom), And Jacob whos named was later changed to Israel they were twins. These two nations first fight started in the womb. Genesis 25:22. This is one of the first stories of the bible. You really think Egyptians don't know who Israel is? They shared the same country for over 400 years , 170 as slaves before Moses (a levite not a "Jew") lead the israelites out of bondage. And these two nayions are saying that thesevARE NOT JEWS.. True the word terrorist is meanlingless and really never provides legitimate strength to any argument. Countries with greater military capability call ennemies with lesser military capability terrorists. Countries with lesser military capability generally have no choice other than to either accept domination from their ennemies or use terrorist tactics. It has been this way since the beginning of time. "Terrorist" essential means a country with lesser military capability that is not prepared to accept domination.

All Iran does is support this angry mob with weapons that have no chance in hell of defeating Israel and only enrage it. Iran's Hamas is using Palestine people because Iran doesn't have the will or trust in Allah enough to do it themselves. By giving them weapons IRAN condemns these people to a certain death and destruction. Not one legitimate Muslim or Arab country has the will to attack Israel openly. LOL. These Iranian rockets fired from the city are not defensive weapons when they are used to instigate retaliation that causes civilian deaths. I would call Islam PUNCH DRUNK if they believe Hamas won that altercation. The real losers are the Palestinian people. Hopefully in the rubble that spans the middle east the Muslim people can find some compassion for one another but I doubt it. Israel on the other hand showed compassion when it ceased its retaliation response. So keep chopping off heads and dragging people through the street and using your children as shields. That is why Allah wont help you and is why your nations are in chaos and only are destroying themselves One after the other. It is why Islam is in this dark age. This chaos and instability in the middle east will last for generations more until Islam rejects radical teachings. The bigger Goliath is the harder and longer it will take to fall. It is written.

As long as there remains disenfranchised people, tribalism and related behaviors that go back to the beginning of time, conflict will always remain. After all, look at Sub Saharan Africa- conflict exists because of the conditions I listed and beyond.
After all, why are nations like Kuwait and Jordan not in the news much? Because there is more effort to educate and integrate the people. When there is a vested interest in the people that make up a nation, civility follows. We can blame 'Islam' (in quotes because it seems like no one really knows what this is, just a common blanket to lazily point a finger to) all day long, but these people were like this before the advent of Islam and in the world today, religion is just a convenient flag to wave and a convenient media hot button to use for ratings. Though why is it that a place like Bangladesh (population over 100 million people and about 90% muslim) is capable of having elected more than one female head of state? Wouldn't all the 'Islamic' stereotypes apply and deem this impossible? People feel more self worth and productive self determination when they are integrated and feel a part of their group/municipality/nation.

Iran in throwing all of you under the bus, knowing full well you cannot possibly WIN against Israel. They are using you to be a thorn in the side of Israel, nothing more...and your deaths mean nothing to Iran. At least Israel is sorry for your deaths, Iran just laughs and sends you more missiles to increase your death count. The Palestinian are only fighting and killing to get back their homeland. Just imagine someone just come in and say half of your house is theirs and you will fight for your right, dont you? Their homeland was rob by UK and given to form Israel. One day the Red Indian will come forward and say US is theirs for thousand years. You must return America to the Red Indian. After a few thousand years a few Jews suddenly declare Palestine their homeland. We American supported them to chase the Palestinian from their homeland. Get yr fact right please. Go to school.

Why is it that it is always the other countries? Soviet, Vietnam, Cuba, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, China, Russia, North Korea, Iran
It is never the United States. Do a research about how much dangerous weapons United States is selling to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain. These are countries that are ruled by dictators.
Immediately the United States government knew that china is doing potential business investments in Africa, US send over 5000 armed soldiers to Africa.
Before you start calling Iran all sorts of names, think again.
Compare US to Iran and see who had fought, is fighting, and will fight more wars in future.
The evil Iran is yet to complete one nuclear weapons, and the righteous US had thousands of these dangerous weapons.
Not taking side but just saying. We have heard it all for over 33 years how evil Iran was, is, and will be. Iran sell weapons to bad guys, US sell to good guys. Why do good guys need dangerous weapons? Osama Bin Laden was given money, intelligence, and dangerous weapons by US. Just saying.

In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.

When you are Israel, a nation attacked in the past by Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Saudia Arabia, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, Sudan, and Paleatine, it is understandable, considering the size and population weakeness, to arm yourself for defense against total annihilation. These countries want their elimination off the face of the earth, and Iran, the puppetmaster of Hamas, and Hezbollah, adamantly denies the holocaust, and calls for the destruction of Israel. Israel built an army to survive, not conquer.

its not religion that binds them; its the hatred that comes a history of non-Arabic imperialism
and the fantasy of some common Greater Arabia.

        November 27, 2012 at 1:29 am |
      • rtrauben

sadly, the things that bind\ these guys are:
        1) hatred that comes from a continual history of non-Arabic imperialism (conveniently forgetting Turkish domination),
        2) the fantasy of some common Greater Arabia.sharing more common interests than they actually do (convenielly
forgetting how little Tunisa, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Sudan, Turkey, Kurdistan, Oman,
Saudi, Kuwait, Qutar, UAE,Yemen, Iran, Afganistan and Pakistan can agree on any topic other than Israel)
        3) the hope that they could lead themselves better than the alternative histories that were imposed on them
        4) the economic reality of a largely illiterate, unemployed, young workforce without much hope for an better
future and a history of intolerance but nominally united by highly splintered, cult driven religous communties
        4) the distraction by shrewd, brutal, autocratic, corrupt families that find convenient scapegoats rather than
improve the everyday lives of the ordinary citizens or use their scarce water resources.

@rtrauben, excellent points, I could not agree with you more – EXCEPT, it gives no one an excuse to steal lands.

I think the Arab leaders have failed their people, economically, socially, environmentally – they have been self serving to the themselves and their families – but still give no one the right to occupy and exile the rightful duelers of the land.

This last operation in Gaza was carried out with extreme precision and Hamas (and therefore Iran) surely too note, thus back to the drawing board for them. They will not come up with a sufficient answer , even though they may think so.

Blaming side A for killing children, or raping women, or blaming side B for blowing up orphanages goes back and forth and back and forth for years, but behind the scenes it's all supported by corporations who are making money off your grief. The arms salesmen. Halliburton, Boeing, and dozens of other US corporations that supply these arms, paid for by American tax dollars to the tunes of $650 BILLION American tax dollars per year! Do you get it? "Yeah, but Israel killed my daughter!" "Yeah, but Hamas killed my son." Shut the hell up and see that you're a pawn. All these corporations are doing is sitting there smoking a cigar for every tear that drops from your eye. War. Profit. More war. More profit. They hope you fight forever.

Israel should've thought twice about assassinating a gaza leader, which instigated this whole thing. The palestinians have a right to respond to such an attack, and wherever they get their weapons from it doesn't really matter. Does anyone question where the israelis are getting their weapons from? ... Iran is selling weapons to them, just like any other country sells weapons to another country, there is nothing that makes this situation any different.

You sound like a drama queen. Facts not one Israeli living or dead has been in Gaza since 2005. Even the Dead Israelis were dug up and removed. I did not say jews because there are over one million Arabs living in Israel, and other groups and religions.

Israel locked you out because you so called freedom fighters continued to do suicide bombings into School buses, Pizza parlors, and pregnant woman would cross from Gaza to get medical care only to blow themselves up in the hospitals. You hate your babies so much you blow them up?

Israel built a wall to protect there citizens and keep you animals out. You want to wage Jihad wage it on the crossings with Egypt.

One day Israel will get smart and start bombing population centers whenever you commit acts of terror. Until that day comes you are a liar. True, though bombing their population centers simply would not deter them. They would just be martyrs and more of them. As for your medical treatment comment, it is true. I spent time with a special unit in Israel and they related the story of a Palestinian female who was being treated for burns in an Israeli hospital for more than a year. A week after she was completely well again she came back to that hospital...wearing a suicide belt. To me Islam is like the HIV virus that is dormant and suddenly can break out/activate, after which the Virus inhabited Muslim seeks to kill all non Muslims. That means when a Muslim is peaceful, it is simply because the virus has not been activated.

TheRonin... You should try to GET A CLUE of what you're talking about next time. You see, in 1947 (or, rather, 1948) the "world" did not move anyone anywhere. That year the UN OFFERED to solve the conflict in Palestine by dividing the land and creating a Jewish state in area with the Jewish majority and an Arab state in areas with the Arab majority. The Jews accepted the UN offer and declared a state. The Arabs rejected it and started a war which they consequently lost. If the Arabs did not try to destroy Israel in 1948 and since no one would be hurt or moved. It's that simple.
