With conflict stopped, Israeli military touts successes

The relentless pace of the Israeli airstrike on Gaza gave the country's military time to make a significant dent in the offensive capability of Hamas, the Israeli military said.
Over the eight day conflict, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) looked to deplete some of the estimated 12,000 rockets Hamas has in its arsenal and destroy tunnels that are said to be used to smuggle weapons.
"We are very satisfied with the achievements that we have had in this operation," Israel Defense Force spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich said on CNN's 'Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.'
The operation was not without human cost. Nearly 150 Palestinian and Israelis, though mostly Palestinians, were killed and many more were injured.
But the IDF said the operation allowed it to accomplish "its pre-determined objectives for Operation Pillar of Defense, and has inflicted severe damage to Hamas and its military capabilities," according to a media release sent soon after the cease-fire took effect on Wednesday.
The military gains were a factor in Israel agreeing to stop the airstrikes, according to the IDF.
"These operational achievements provided the underlying framework for this evening's cease-fire agreement," the IDF release said.
Hamas fired more than 1,500 rockets, according to the IDF statement. But if Hamas started the conflict with 10,000-12,000 rockets, as Israeli and American officials believe, than there is plenty of firepower left in Gaza.
Israel also said it destroyed "significant elements" of Hamas rocket launching capabilities, saying "hundreds" were targeted, including "dozens of long-range rocket launchers and launch sites."
While Hamas used rockets with far greater reach than those launched in previous conflicts - like the Fajr-5 which can reach Jerusalem and Tel Aviv - the fighting also demonstrated the capability of Israel's defense system.
The "Iron Dome" system intercepted 84% of Hamas rockets fired toward Israeli civilian areas, according to the Israeli military. The IDF also said Hamas may have fired a lot of rockets but less than 7% managed to hit populated areas within Israel.
The Israeli operation targeted what the Israeli military said were command and operational control centers, senior-rank headquarters and bases.
The Israelis also said they did significant damage to the ability of Hamas to replenish its weaponry by targeting 140 smuggling tunnels, 66 "terror tunnels" and 26 weapon manufacturing and storage facilities. Hamas uses those tunnels to smuggle weapons in from Iran and Libya, according to Israeli and American officials. Iran's role in supplying Hamas with weapons was touted by a Hamas leader on Wednesday.
"I would like to say weapons that we have that helped us to withstand this aggression, part of it was manufactured in Gaza and part of it came from people who helped us and supported us. Iran had a role in this support in arming and training," Khaled Meshaal said during a press conference that aired on Aqsa television.
In an interview that aired on CNN International's 'Amanpour," Meshaal said Hamas seeks financial, military and other forms of support from Iran and from any state that wishes to support Hamas.
The United States has also pressed Egypt to shut down the Sinai tunnels, which are also a key source for delivering commercial goods into Gaza.
Iran was trying to provide Hamas with more long-range missles in the last week, according to IDF's spokeswoman.
"Even during the operation, Iran went through great efforts to try and push ahead long-range rockets into Gaza when Iran saw the effect these long-range rockets have on the Israeli population," Leibovich said in the Situation Room interview. Leibovich said Iran was not successful in getting the rockets into Gaza.
White House Counterterrorism Advisor John Brennan visited the region to talk about dealing with smuggling and the security in the Sinai, a senior U.S. official told CNN's Jill Dougherty.
IDF listed seven "senior operatives" of Hamas who were targeted.
But the Hamas spokesman claimed Israel did more damage to Gaza's civilian infrastructure than Hamas' military capabilities.
"They wanted to destroy infrastructure of Hamas, today they claim to have done so," Meshaal said on Wednesday.
"I don't deny they have done so much. We could count how many buildings they have destroyed, and how many offices of the media they have destroyed, and how many children they have killed, and how many journalists and how many photographers they have killed - just like you. We can count how many offices and how many buildings they have destroyed. This is their accomplishment. They have nothing else to show."
The preparation for a ground invasion, which never was launched, served as a dry run for Israel's military in the event an operation is ordered in the future, according to the Israelis.
"IDF soldiers, in regular and reserve military service, gathered in assembly areas and prepared for the ground operation. Their time was used for training and improving their operational capabilities," according to the IDF statement.
But the Israeli efforts were not without a huge cost. An "Iron Dome" missile costs at least $62,000, Israeli officials said. With approximately 500 fired over eight days, the cost of missiles is more than $30 million.
The "Iron Dome" was successful but is not a perfect shield, said one analyst.
"'Iron Dome' does have certain limits to the number of missiles it can engage," said Steve Zaloga, a military weapons expert with the Teal Group.
For all of Israel's declared successes, Hamas takes some lessons and victories from the battle as well. Most importantly, it does not take a lot of missiles to cause chaos.
"It doesn't take more than one or two of these things to land in a major urban center to cause political response, to cause panic and to maybe force Israel's hand into a ground operation," said Dan Goure, a missile defense expert with the Lexington Institute.
Another antagonist in the region, Iran, may see Israel's success as a cautionary sign should it look to Hamas to assist in retaliating if Israel strikes Iran's nuclear program, Goure said.
"Israel may be able to tolerate whatever retaliation Hamas or Hezbollah might do in the event of an attack on Iran. So Iran may have felt a little more vulnerable today than it did a week or two ago," Goure observed.

Unfortunately I don't think that would work. There is too much animosity between them. If I remember correctly, neither had any land to speak of. They were both wandering tribes. Palestinians tried to invade Egypt at one point, around the same time Israel was enslaved by Egypt. Palestine withdrew, Israel was freed and wandered (Biblically speaking now) 40 years. Palestine settled, historically speaking again, in that area but had no real boudaries to speak of. Then along comes Israel and tries to claim land. Neither of the tribes settled boundary issues and have pretty much been fighting it out ever since. This is such a long exhaustive history that they should really both learn how to deal and accept each other. There is no viable solution for this that both will willingly accept.

One of the greatest challenges the human race faces is mirroring. It too easy to continue a cycle of hate if hate is all we are exposed to. Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting long before the country of Israel was even established. Both tribes, Israel and the Philistia, or otherwise known as Hebrews and Philistians/Philistines have been waring each other over boundary issues as far back as the hieroglyphs mentioned them in Egypt. Those are estimated to be made in 1150BC. That is a long time for hate and conflict to rage in any culture. Any conflict can morph into hate and anger over time. But we are talking more than 3,162 years. Imagine those emotions being embedded in your DNA.
War has no winners...period. I wonder if even a small percentage of the folks commenting here have actually experienced combat. How many of you have heard the scream of a rocket over head, in the dark of night, followed by an explosion in the not too far distance? Always wondering when or if one will hit your area. How many of you have felt the punch in the gut, the adrenaline shock your body is subjected to when a bomb drops from the air and levels a city block? Everyone that is subjected to war is a casualty wether they are wounded, killed, or unscathed. Folks that go through these experiences are forever changed.

Mike, the "war crimes" you charge against Israel should be charged against Hamas, that uses civilian shields to hide their weapons and fire from population centers. But Hamas DOES see value in negative publicity for civilian casualties, that they themselves engineer.

Simplest way to keep rockets from being fired into Israel from Gaza? Carpet bomb the whole Strip a few times. When there are only a very few standing structures left and the population is reduced from 1.7 million to a few thousand, then the animals won't find it so easy to fire on Israel with impunity.

It is hilarious to hear all the Israel-Firsters keep on claiming Israel won its war of aggression against the Gazan Palestinians when, in fact, Israel begged for a ceasefire because it was running out Iron Dome interceptor rockets!
This only goes to show once more that Israel needs to end its immoral and illegal occupation over millions of Palestinians and finally make peace with its neighbors including ending the blockade of Gaza completely.
The recent war with the Gazan Palestinians just shows how futile it is for Israel to think that it will achieve anything by force of arms.
Notwithstanding what Israel-Firsters say, the fact is that Israel had to abjectly seek a ceasefire with the Palestinians of Gaza not because Israel was winning its war of aggression or because the Palestinians were running out of rockets but because Israel was running out of Iron Dome rocket interceptors!
This is the reason why the USA brought in four Aegis cruisers into the Mediterranean Sea they were brought into the picture to rescue Israel given that it would not be able to protect itself from the Gazan retaliation for much longer given that the inventory of Iron Dome rocket interceptors was severely depleted.
This is also why Israel has demanded/leeched an additional funding of $70,000,000 for its Iron Dome program from WE THE AMERICAN TAXPAYERS as part of the ceasefire.
It is time for Israel to end its occupation over the Palestinians and bring its settler/squatter enterprise to a final close because the current situation is not sustainable for Israel given that America has its own fiscal cliff and economic problems and cannot allow Israel to leech off of the USA for perpetuity as it has been doing for fifty plus years in amounts in the hundreds of billions of dollars!
Readers can do the basic math for themselves about how futile Israel’s military deterrence will be in the future by taking into account the fact that each Iron Dome rocket interceptor costs over $200,000 and this price will keep on going up and up. Given this, let’s do the basic math at current cost projections:
1 interceptor = $200,000.00 (two hundred thousand dollars)
10 interceptors = $2,000,000.00 (two million dollars)
100 interceptors = $ 20,000,000.00 (twenty million dollars)
1000 interceptors = $200,000,000.00 (two hundred million dollars)
10,000 interceptors = $2,000,000,000 (two billion dollars)
There is no way that Israel can ever cough up this type of money to build this many rocket interceptors for the Iron Dome so its whole concept of deterrence is thrown right out the window. The fact is that even if it came up with the money for this number of interceptors from the USA, the system would be completely overloaded, the first time that an adversary fired a barrage of 100 much cheaper Grad rockets or variation ($500 a pop). It becomes even more futile if the rockets of adversaries contain cluster munitions or incendiary explosives as these would be widely dispersed even if the rocket was intercepted by an Iron Dome interceptor.
Finally, this makes it obvious that if an adversary has a stockpile of more than twenty thousand rockets, it can completely negate Israel’s Iron Dome rocket interceptor system to the point that it is completely useless, and a waste of American taxpayer dollars!
Reality check for Israel: if Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iran, Turkey, and Lebanon ever realize, and make it their strategy to maintain deterrence vis-à -vis Israel by maintaining over 40,000 or more rockets each as part of their inventory, Israel’s deterrent abilities will amount to nought particularly taking into account that only 30% of incoming rockets from Gaza were even intercepted and given that Hezbollah alone probably has over 60,000-70,000 rockets in its inventory.
Israel needs to understand that it must make peace with the Palestinians and its neighbors and end its brutal and immoral occupation as America is sick and tired of having to drag Israel’s butt out of the fire and pay through its teeth for its ongoing leeching of WE THE AMERICAN TAXPAYERS while millions of American children live off of food stamps, our schools, roads, and highways decay, our homes are foreclosed, and tens of millions lose their jobs and life savings, and our inner cities look like war zones!
On that note, Israel-Firsters will froth and fume and keep on yammering about how Israel won in its war of aggression against the Gazans, when, in fact, Israel was begging like a hobo on the street corner for a ceasefire since it had either run out of Iron Dome interceptors or was very close to running out of them – again the reason why four American Aegis cruisers were brought into the picture into the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Gaza, namely, to rescue Israel from the mess and quagmire that it had got itself into, and which was going to end in an outright and complete defeat.
Come on Israel, end the occupation and make peace with your neighbors as Iron Dome is simply another joke that fuels a false sense of security among your population, and encourages poor and reckless leaders like Nutty-Yahoo to endanger Israel and all Israelis!

The Israeli-palestinian matter can be a challenging one to take a clear position on. On one hand you have the state of Israel invented in 1949 by the British who illegally gifted parts of colonized Palestine (that were not theirs to give) to european/white Ashkenazi jews. This original wrong makes the Palestinian cause a just cause.
But on the other hand you have American interest. An Islamic fundamentalist world is clearly a threat to American/western society. Israel therefore as a nation whose values are more in line with our own serves as a strategic bulwark in a Middle East sea of Islam – or at least that’s the rationale. The ideological and strategic battle against Islamic extremism is as (if not more) significant as the battle against facism and communism.
This dichotomy results from Deceptive Albion (ie Great Britain) in 1949 decision to use jews as a pawn to place a check on the rise of islam by creating Israel in its’ midst? We therefore are left to follow through with this strategy supporting the tribe (Israel) that advances our strategic interests in the region. However I suspect our post-world war 2 assessment as to the strategic risks of the muslim world (like the case with Cuba) to ours may be rather dated. Islamic extremist are a nutjob no doubt, and if they are allowed to take control of muslim societies we certainly can have a problem. But here is the irony: our foremost middle east ally (Wahabbi Saudi Arabia) are the foremost disseminators of Islamic extremism. Further, irony is that Wahabbi Saudi arabia’s commercial ties to the U.S. is keeping wahabbi extremism in check – to the point where Paris Hilton now have a store in Mecca and 5-across Saudi Arabia.
So if islam is not the threat in 2012 that we thought it was in 1949, what should we do? Or even if it is still a substantial threat, is our Israeli catnip backfiring keeping what is otherwise a dying threat vibrant and alive? I say we should divide and conquer: the essence of the Obama strategy. In Obama Harvard-esque language we would say we need to be “more nuanced” and “less provincial”. Obama is a wise president and the foremost Islamic extremist has termed him a “…wise enemy…”. This assessment is correct and the Obama high IQ strategy goes virtually undetected (as it should). The same IQ he used to deftly beat Hillary and Romney without them even knowing what was coming, is the same genius that eliminated a host of opponents from bin laden to Somali pirates & Gaddaffi – all with a smile and high likeability rating (Bush must be jealous!).
THE OBAMA NUANCE: Identifiy your enemies more accurately, then eliminate them cost-efficiently, reallocating the savings to rebuild America enabling her to deploy military assets to the Pacific to keep china in check and better compete with 21st century china.
LET’S ASK OURSELVES: what is Israel doing to keep ACTUAL Islamic extremist that THREATEN AMERICA in check? Hamas & Hesbullah does not care to harm America, and if they did we could do the job more cost-effectively by recruiting rival muslims as paid agents to take them out. The Israel-palestinian tribal war is not cost-efficient and does not deliver the goods to U.S. interests.

The Wests attempt of creating a buffer of moderation in the ME has turned into a cesspool of extremism. By 2020 The United States will be exporting more oil than Saudi Arabia that along with our natural gas reserves will make the US the 800 pound energy gorilla. They fight because countries like the U.S. and Iran enable them with that option. If they were left without foreign aid, especially weapons of war and protective military might, they would be reduced to survival through manufacturing, trade and agriculture. Compromise would be required because they would eventually have no other option – like addicts required to hit bottom before moving towards real solutions. The world has invested too much money and blood in this region – usually due to our need & greed for oil. The sooner we break ourselves of that addiction the sooner the region will stabilize. Maybe WE need to hit our "bottom" as energy addicts.
