Detour at beginning of Hillary Clinton’s farewell tour

By Jamie Crawford

Before breaking off her trip to Asia to fly to the Middle East to address the crisis in Gaza, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in the midst of what in many ways was the start of her world farewell as America's top diplomat.

During a historic stop this week in Myanmar at the home of Aung San Suu Kyi, the celebrated Nobel laureate and advocate for Burmese democracy, Barack Obama made a point to praise Clinton on what would likely be their final foreign trip together as U.S. president and secretary of state.

The symbolism of the trip's importance, and Clinton's role, was captured through the image of her walking off Air Force One with Obama – the first by a sitting president to the former pariah nation.

Also: Why Obama administration is avoiding the term 'cease-fire'

"This is her last foreign trip that we're going to take together, and it is fitting that we have come here to a country that she has done so much to support," Obama said referencing Clinton's own history-making trip to Myanmar last December.

Also: Why Israel might hesitate to start a ground invasion

"I could not be more grateful, not only for your service, Hillary, but also for the powerful message that you and Aung San Suu Kyi send about the importance of women and men everywhere embracing and promoting democratic values and human rights," Obama said.

When Suu Kyi came to greet the two on the tarmac, Clinton noticeably held back, letting Obama have his moment. She's proven a loyal Cabinet member, perhaps unimaginable a few years ago at the height of their bitter fight for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008.

But an Obama spokesman said that was all water under the bridge.

"They spent basically the entire flight alone in his personal office on Air Force One just reminiscing about the last four years," Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, told reporters on the trip about the flight from Thailand to Myanmar.

"But, as the president said, it wasn't just the last four years; they have been through a lot together over the last five or six years. And, in fact, unique among people, they have been at this, working as hard as they can, for five or six years now," Rhodes said.

Before the stop in Myanmar, Clinton had already traveled to Australia with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta for meetings with their counterparts, and then to Thailand where she met Obama. There were also two international summits in Cambodia on the schedule before she was scheduled to head back to the United States – that is until the stop in the Middle East was added to the itinerary.

Crisis in the Mideast

As the crisis between Israel and the rulers of Hamas in Gaza worsened, Obama and Clinton worked the phones calling leaders around the world. In announcing Clinton would head to the Middle East on Tuesday, the White House spokesman underscored it came after the president and secretary of state discussed where things stood.

Also: U.S. sends warships near Israel in case needed for evacuation

"They agreed that it makes sense for the secretary to travel to the region," Rhodes said.

Obama dispatched Clinton to meet with the leaders of Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Egypt in an attempt to arrest a situation spiraling dangerously out of control.

It's a something all who have come before Clinton have been called on to do. Travel the world with dizzying frequency – many times to a crisis region for a last ditch attempt at high stakes diplomacy to try and cool tensions.

Clinton, who is globally popular, made history this past June when she became the first secretary of state to visit more than 100 countries when she landed in Latvia. Since then, she has made multiple stops in Asia and Africa, and also visited Russia, Haiti and Peru.

Clinton has no official overseas travel announced beyond the current trip, but there is always the potential to go to Brussels next month for a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, not to mention an unending series of crisis elsewhere in the Middle East and North Africa that might demand some additional travel.

The trip to the Middle East may also provide an opportunity for Clinton to rehabilitate her record which has been tarnished following the September terror attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

Questions have arisen over whether the State Department did enough to address the security concerns of U.S. diplomats and personnel working at the compound, and why she did not take the lead in explaining the U.S. understanding of the armed assault in the days immediately following.

Stepping down

What is certain is that Clinton does not intend to serve in Obama's second term.

"I think after 20 years, and it will be 20 years, of being on the high-wire of American politics and all of the challenges that come with that, it would be a - probably a good idea to just find out how tired I am," she said in an interview with CNN earlier this year about stepping down even if Obama was re-elected.

"I'm aiming to leave shortly after the inauguration; that's my plan," she told the Washington Post in an interview a week before Obama won a second term. "I'm not really open to staying longer, but I also know that we have to be conscious of the work that has to be done. And again, I'll have to talk to the president."

Her spokesman later said she would stay until a new secretary of state is confirmed, a common practice for outgoing Cabinet members.

But the prospect of who will fill her shoes has become a more complicated question in recent days.

Speculation has centered on Susan Rice, who currently serves as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, as the most likely candidate to be nominated by Obama. But her explanation of the administration's response to the Benghazi attack has come under intense criticism by Senate Republicans who would ultimately vote on any nominee.

"Let's see what happens here, but we will do what ever is necessary to block the nomination that's within our power as far as Susan Rice is concerned," Senator John McCain (R-AZ) said at a press conference last week. Just this week, 97 House Republicans sent a letter to the president declaring their opposition as well.

It is still a guessing game as to precisely when Clinton will announce her resignation. She is thought to want to remain on the job at least until a congressionally ordered investigation of the Benghazi incident is completed.

Regardless of what happens, she has made it clear that her time as America's top diplomat is coming to a close, and with it, a long career on the national stage who's every movement seemed to garner scrutiny across a range of issues.

In an interview during a trip to India with CNN's Jill Dougherty earlier this year, Clinton seemed to be looking to her coming retirement when she was asked about how her appearances were being discussed in the blogosphere.

"I feel so relieved to be at the stage I'm at in my life right now, Jill, because if I want to wear my glasses, I'm wearing my glasses. If I want to pull my hair back, I'm pulling my hair back. And at some point it's just not something that deserves a whole lot of time and attention, and if others want to worry about it, I'll let them do the worrying for a change."

Im not a liberal nor a Clinton fan(Bill or Hillary) but I will admit that Hillary has done a decent job as secratary of state,
Could she have done better at times?-Of course she could have, but nevertheless she understands diplomacy quite well and lets give her the credit she deserves.

Old Hillary was "too busy" to testify about Benghazi but she sure cleared her schedule tout suite when she wanted to stick her snout in this. Overthrowing regimes and inserting the Muslim Brotherhood appears to be in the plans but Israel fighting back effectively, not so much. I've got bad news for Hill and all the others who are enemies of Israel. . .you're going to lose.

Nobody most especially the dom Americans like John McCain dear open their mouth at someone like Hillary who is doing a job well done. McCain should hold his piece and go back to his hole. He is still feeling the pains of never nad never will he smell the position of a President. More insult into the injuries another GOP losing to the same Obama that defeated him.
America is moving forward at every level. The people have spoken and the Republicans should continue licking their wounds. Isreal should stop depending on USA. Of what economical importance is Isreal to the USA, rather trouble maker. They kept pulling America into hates and dislikes in the Middle East. Hillary and Obama are still cleaning up the mess left behind by the last goverment. Some sense of appreciation will do.

IF and even Israel didn't exist on the earth the ME would hate the USA with the passion it has shown in the last three decades. When you understand that, you can blame nobody about terrorists and messes except the ME. The support of Israel is just a lame superficial excuse they use to hate the infidels, much like the video and cartoons and whatever else they riot and scream about for hate crutches to cover their teachings of kill the non Islams.

CNN has Hillary Clinton on a pedestal - CNN is left nut wiccan that exists to tickle the ears of other left nut wiccans - then she ignites the tension between Israel and Arabs again with her threats to Egypt about money and "we favor Israel over Arabs" rhetoric - she sounded like the mean, rejecting Sarah who had Ishmael bannished off into the desert. Duh? CNN does not have the guts to admit that they feel the same way - all those impovished "declining western wiccans" might leave CNN for MSNBC - ratings drop down into hell right?

Based on all the Liberal comments on this stream, it appears that anger with the Bush men far outweigh undeserved idolization of Obama. Yes, Bill Clinton was a good President despite his moral flaws. Our nation had many "great" Presidents before Clinton - both Republican and Democrat. Obama is sure to be excluded from that number. Romney would not have been "another Bush" anymore than Bush was Reagan. There are good and bad American Chief Executives from both parties. Obama is a bad one, and will no doubt prove to be even worse. Take it from a Republican who is open minded enough to recognize a "good" Democrat when he sees one.

Abraham and Sarah were very old and childless. Jehovah God blessed them with two sons. Abraham loved both his sons - Isaac (Jews) and Ishmael (Arabs) - equally. Sarah resented Ishmael because he was of their slave girl Haggar. Sarah pressured Abraham into casting them off. Jehovah took care of them and Ishmael flurished. Israel and Arabs need to feel the shared ancient blood for "long-term" peace - but then the "Blood of Abraham" will unite to reject the "evil and exploitative Westerners." Be careful what you wish for - right?

The world sat by while Israel did the same thing in Lebanon not too long ago. Just sat by and watched the carnage. And when I say the world, I'm not talking about the free world's democracies - but the morally degraded take-over of those by minority representation while still using our taxpayer dollars to involuntarily feed this parasite state of Israel.

Give us our democracy back - you miserable pieces of garbage running our governments into massive debt while refusing to do the right and moral thing. Send UN troops into the Gaza Strip NOW. You God-hating heathens.

If Biblical prophecy is to be believed, the world will be divided into two major power blocks - such as described by the prophet Daniel (King of the North versus King of the South) before total world-wide economic collapse. One would have imagined the East to collapse before the West decades ago, but now it is begining to appear thet opposite will be true.

The West has no influence on the east - to believe otherwise is just holding on to glory days of WASP empires past. Whites are becoming wiccan -non-christian, both in America and Europe. The East sees a West in economic decline - no money will lead to losing everything else. the East wants to control the West - and is growing stronger with time - encouraging exploitation of liberal Western immigration policies - the East continuing to grow strong as its weaker leaves for the West.

Other issues? Somebody is going to pay for those 4 dead men who sent out the 911 call for help and the calvary never came. As sad as it is, it's not the same as in times of war like Iraq. Casualties happen. But even in Iraq, had 4 soldiers radioed for help it would have arrived. Leave no man behind. For those boys in Iraq help could have come, but somebody called it off. Who, and why?

"Angry Old White Men" are witnessing the rapid decline of Western World. They know the difference between a strong robust powerful America and the weak piece of crap we live in today. Europe no different. The East is growing more powerful each day. The Old White Man sees it, and feels angry because he is powerless to stop it.

I say good riddance also. She accomplished nothing in the four years she was Sec of State. She was thought of as weak and so was the President in foreign affairs. Do you really think all of this would be going on with Israel would be happening had there been a different outcome to the election? They know Obama and his administration will do nothing. They were not sure about Romney which is why they waited till after our elections to start anything.

No one in the Mideast believes the US really cares about them - including Israel and Egypt. Hillary just dropped in for photo ops and everyone knows it. They laugh at her. She is a fat Wiccan American joke. Egypt will soon decide to tell America to keep the money and get our butts out of the area. The Jews and Arabs will settle their own differences then perhaps join forces to attack our rapidly declining Western world. –the European and American economy will not get any better - only worse, as the eastern counties grow bigger and better in military strength and economy. The West will become enslaved to the East. think about it.

CNN MANGEMENT: The United Sates/rest of Western World is losing influence in the Middle East. While the Jews and Arabs have fought each other for decades, two things are becoming more clear to both of them: (1) They are all seeds of Abraham (Jews-Isaac, Arabs-Ishmael) and Jehovah God took care of both centuries ago. (2) The West has exploited the East for Oil/other sources of profit, and in the name of Christianity. However, what is rapidly becoming recognized is that the West is losing the Christian ground to transformation of becoming more wiccan. Western leaders and the people who elect them are leaning wiccan (or non-religious, anti-Christian). The East still holds belief in a Supreme Being -their Universal Creator. This may be the glue to bind Eastern nations and reject the declining West. This may not happen tomorrow or the next day, but it will happen. The East will swallow the West - and a growing number of people believe that it could not happen soon enough.

I'm sure Hillary will not be any older than McCain when he ran in 2008. And California79, it would 8 years of Mrs. Clinton's White House AFTER Obama serves his second 4 year term–that gives the Rebulicans a 12 year window to to get their act together again. That really means a new generation of Republicans will take over the reins of the GOP.

It's obvious that everybody want Israel and more so the US to just bomb the krud out of Gaza, Iran, West Bank etc. Let me ask YOU do you truly know the whole story? I've read President Carters book and many others.. Trying looking an entire segment of your population up in two ghetos, take away all but near living conditions, destroy their schools, call any time of government they elect to be terrorists, btw owning the US Media is also helpful. Take away their crop lands, drive tanks into their streets, fly F15 overhead all day... do you think they might act up? Do you think they want a better life for their children? Israel give the Pals no option for a better life...Israel says it wants peace and then tortures the pal using the exact same type of warfare the Nazi's did to their forefathers. Somehow the US ends up paying for this, why is anybody's question. Israel does NOT want peace it wants the land and the native dead. Every few years they go in and kill a few thousand and of course blame it on the other side who have few weapons often throwing rocks at tanks. We in the US think this is ok because it's Israel... if it were any other country we would be calling it war crimes. Truly tragic...

They have become terrorists for a reason. Without a strong military force they're reduced to terrorism as their only means of resisting occupation. How did the French, Poles, Hungarians, and Dutch resist the occupation of Hitler? If the U.S. was a militarily weak nation and a group of powerful nations decided to return America to the Native American tribes would we resort to terrorism to defeat the attempt?

I will always think that Hillary should have been the Democratic nominee in 2008. Experience does matter in life and Hillary had not only served 8 years in the WH, but was on her second term as senator. Obama had barely been a senator for 2 years. It should have been Hillary in 2008 and Obama in 2016.

I was with all my heart for Hillary in 2008 and I never accepted she 'lost' the nomination to Mr. Obama. I still believe she would have done a much better job to avoid the deep hole in which this country was brought for the past 4 years. Overall, I think she kept an independent position while working for the 'boss' which is a good point. However, after Benghazi, I am starting to have doubts. I also didn't like Bill's involvement in Obama's re-election because I question his motives.

Anne I disagree with you, i think it may have been for the best that she didn't win that nomination. Nobody could have stemmed the tide of the economic recession... Bush had the country in such a deep hole when Obama took office, 800k jobs lost per month... that's astounding to think about... The economic rebound would take years no matter who was in office.... She will benefit from a stronger economy when she is elected in 2016 and probably will have an easier time working with Repubs who will be coming off another Presidential loss.

And So Hillary takes some time off before she preps for the 2016 campaign. I'm actually excited to have her as President now. Wasn't fond of her when she was running, but i think she now is worldly enough experienced enough and has been through the ringer enough that she can be a good President. She's probably the most qualified Dem out there as well. The Clinton's are almost like Royalty in America as Bill held office the last time America felt good about itself. Then Bush came in and.... "fixed" everything.

GOOD RIDDANCE to a stunningly incompetent nitwit. She's cobbled quite a fantastic career out of living off the reflected glory of the man she married, in being a useless back bencher, and in being arguably the worst Secretary of State in American history. With Syria in rubble, her monumental failure in Benghazi, and Iran on the verge of nuclearization, her failures speak far louder than the shrill din of those who think she's some kind of marvel. Nevertheless, I am still amazed at her PR staff, who have done a simply masterful job of duping far too many into believing that she somehow has "gravitas." At least perhaps now she'll continue her important work of resuming the search for Ameila Earhart? I suggest she had to the South Pacific and not come back until she finds her remains.

Where did I say I was "blaming" her for the civil war in Syria? I'm waiting . . . She let the Russians and Chinese roll all over her; she dithered about whether to assist the opposition to the point where they are becoming more and more radicalized with each passing day . . . Face it, the facade is exactly that.

Sorry to disagree with you, but the following quote taken from this artical doesn't sound like a woman who wants to go into her 70's worrying about wearing the right shade of lipstick before attending a WH press conference. Must confess though, I still believe she will actively participate in politics on some level, but, for now, let's cut her some slack and let her get some well deserved rest.

Hillary, and I know she is liked by a bunch of Americans, is still not the top diplomat in the USA. In fact she still carries with her a lot of unanswered problems as far back as Whitewater. My question is why she continuing to spend millions of dollars in Tax payers money for her joy ride around the world as a farewell trip? We are $17 Trillion in the hole already, why are we trying to break the bank? How many other Secretary of States have felt the compulsion to do such events or other noteworthy individuals from other countries. Would we not be better off taking the money she is blowing and donating it to the disaster that happend due to Hurricane Sandy?

Comment full of hate clearly shows your partisan view. For a powerful, global player country like the US, this kind of practice is normal. There are a lot of diplomatic relations that need to be strengthened, and this kind of trips are part of work for the country, not just for personal gratification. GOP would equally gleefully take such a trip if they can, the only thing preventing it from happening is not that they are fiscally responsible like they want yoou to believe, but nobody wanted to bid farewell to them. The fact that this administration does the tour is eloquent testament of their popularity oversea, a fact that any TRUE AMERICAN should be proud of, instead of bickering in partisan stand.

So let me get this straight .... a riot breaks out in a volatile part of the world and an embassy is attacked. And Obama or Hillary were not there to stop it. Where was Bush when the planes were flying into buildings? Oh yes, he was reading My Pet Goat to 5 years olds instead of issuing any orders, scrambling any AF planes. Then when he gets on AF1, for some reason JUST that day, communciatoin systems are donw on AF1 so again he is unable to communicate..... And 3,000 people are killed in one day, innocent citizens sitting at their freaking desks. And Obama / Hillary are at fault here? GMAB.

Who called for the 911 Commission? Was it Bush, or Cheney, or the Speaker, or McCain, or Newt or anyone else? No, it was the 911 widows who pushed for it. To this very day Bush and Cheney's testimony is sealed. While folks were jumping out windows that were 100 stories high, in our country, on our soil, Bush read My Pet Goat. GMAB. He was more than AWOL .....

Bush was complicit in the attacks. The official government explanation of 911 is a lie. Jet fuel fires don't melt steel. A third tower fell that day, WTC 7, and was not even hit by an airplane. All 3 towers fell symmetrically in a matter of seconds onto their own footprint, consistent with controlled demolition. No wonder that they only gave 3 million to the 911 commission to investigate (they spent 50 million on investigating the Challenger explosion), that they dragged their feet as long as they could, and that Bush wouldn't testify without Cheney by his side. Ah, so innocent, reading to schoolchildren...

We don't need to go back and it certainly is not Obama's obligation to review PAST SOS's. If that were the case, I would opt for Madelien Albright, she was much better. Condi was a Bush rubber stamp and Colin's credibility is gone on the internaitional stage. I have no objection to Susan Rice or John Kerry, both are quite knowledgeable on world affairs and Susan Rice is currently performing wonderfully for us at the UN.

Congress has been on a steady slide since Gingrich conspired with Limbaugh during the Clinton days. A chapter the right continues to try to replay to the entire country's detrimnent. And the bloviating will continue, nothing was learned from the defeats they suffered 2 weeks ago. Reminds me of Romney saying "we are not going to be stopped by fact checkers". But the voters will stop them - this past election assured me of that fact. Thankfully, the President and especially the SOS operate independent of Congress.

Chicago, Hillary took the blame on Benghazi to help Obama's reelection campaign. There is evidence she asked for – and was denied – additional forces and military support for the Consulate. The timing of her statement was deliberately chosen to remove an attack by Romney in the 3rd Presidential Debate, which was on Foreign Policy. She took the blame for the terrorost attack the DAY before the 3rd debate, effectively deflating the issue and greatly helping Obama's performance. It was brillant political maneuvering, but she is not to blame for that attack. Trust me.

I trust nothing what a lib says...look at the lies from Obama...and all other libs for that she was part of the killing of the 4 Americans.

Yeah Chicago, she has a lot of catching up to do.
Bush failed to stop the 3000 who died on 911.
Then sent US troops into the wrong country.
No Democrat could possibly meet those high standards.

Ms. Clinton has a few African genes, same as the rest of us (see "Out of Africa" evolution)
Will that help her in future political endeavors?

She'll need the free time to defend herself in the civil suits resulting from Benghazi.

What civil suit? When you become ambassador, you assume the risk. If the Marines can file a civil suit, thousands of US soldiers killed and/or maimed in Iraq war can sue the government. Look it up.

Not that anyone really wants to start thinking about the 2016 Presidential election, but how do we all think the Bengazi consulate attack will play out for Sec. Clinton when she assesses her bid for the Democratic Party's nomination to run on their ticket. Will the rest of her stellar career be ignored for this one event that may have happened anyway, even if she had posted extar security details in Bengazi. Hell, we may be looking at more than just 4 American deaths if she had done that. The only feasable choice was for them to pull their people out of Bengazi altogether given the security situation. However, knowing how critical it is for the U.S. to remain in place in Libya might also be the reason why the administration thought it important enough to chance attacks to the Bengazi consulate. Thoughts on how this all will effect her bid for the 2016 Presidential race, would be interesting to read. Thanks!

Bill Clinton can't be Vice President. The Vice President has to meet all the qualifications for President, and Bill Clinton is prohibited from running again by the 22nd Amendment.

        November 20, 2012 at 2:01 pm |
      • Post It Notes

Incorrect. You should read up on that Amendment.

        November 20, 2012 at 2:17 pm |
      • Horo

        22nd amendment:

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

Bill Clinton was elected to the office twice. He is ineligible. How am I incorrect?

First, because this talks all about the office of the President, not VP. Second, it only talks about being restricted from being elected President. In the situation descried, he would be elected VP and subsequently moved into President. The last exclusion says that if someone held the office of President, or acted as President in place of a person who was elected AND they did that for more than 2 years, they can only seek 1 more term. In other words, if the VP became President because of the impeachment of the elected President and served for more than two years, they would have only one more eligible term as elected president. Some blogger pointed out that technically, a person could be president indefinitely if they always ran as VP, and subsequently the elected President resigned.

The short political memory of the American electorate precludes any significant negative Benghazi effect on a Clinton presidency bid.

Not counting the WTC and the Pentagon attacks on 9/11, there were at least 11 other fatal terrorist attacks on embassies and compounds during GWB's term, and it caused no backlash as far as his base. Why would this incident be Hillary's undoing? It is a given that all embassies that we have around the world could be subject to attack at any given time. We can do what we can as far as security, but we can't be everywhere 24/7. The best we can hope for is an intelligence tip off in time to prevent it, which we have done in other instances. The GOP is looking for anything at this point, and it appears desperate, especially when they overlooked far worse during the Bush admin. Have they suddenly changed their point of view, or is this just another witch hunt? At this point, they are even arguing semantics, which seems rather telling in itself.

Nobody expected these things to happen but in Benghazi everyone saw it happen and nobody did a thing to help them...

Joel, see my reply to Chicago above. Hillary took the fall on Beghazi deliberately to help Obama get reelected. Even John McCain hinted at this. There were rumors she was being considered to replace Biden as Obama's VP in his 2nd race. She declined because she wants to run in 2016. In return for Obama's support in 2016, she announced her responsibility for the Benghazi disaster. Ultimately, repsonsibility for military affairs lies with the Commander-in-Chief not the Sec of State, and if it were not for Hillary, I believe we'd be in far worse condition internationally.

Hillary took the blame and immediately, Obama said that the buck stops with him and that he accepts the blame. Don't pint it otherwise because this presidents has been more than willing to assume it all, even when he had nothing to do with it. Funny, how certain other presidents weren't blamed when things like this happened.

I read an article the other day that I haven't seen on many mainstream websites but she is quoted as saying that once she leaves her post she is going to take a year off and when she returns she will begin ramping up her campaign for office with her husband as her VP running mate.

Again? Would anyone like to join my new political party? The Necktie Party. Nobody serves more than one term until judges can diagram a sentence and it is illegal for attorneys to be legislators. No need for pensions either.

Agreed. She has served well – it is time for retirement & the next stage of life. She is too old to run in 2016 – but she can accomplish a lot of good working with her husband independently on international initiatives. Hope she will stick to that & get out of politics while the getting is good & leave it to the next generation.

I don't think he would be able to run as V.P. would he, given he's already served his two terms as President? It would be a bit of a demotion for him anyway.
