U.S. sends warships near Israel in case evacuation needed

Three U.S. Navy amphibious warships are returning to the eastern Mediterranean to remain on standby in the event they are needed to assist Americans leaving Israel in the coming days, according to two U.S. officials.
The officials stressed an evacuation remains an extremely remote possibility and the Obama administration is not currently planning for one. Americans who wish to leave the region now are able to do so using commercial airlines.
But the decision to send the ships even if the event is such a remote contingency underscores the growing concern about where the Israel-Gaza conflict could be headed.
"This is due diligence. It is better to be prepared should there be a need," one official said Monday. Both officials said the ships would be used only for assisting Americans and not for any combat role.
Why Israel might hesitate to start a ground invasion
The most immediate impact will be on the ships' crews and the estimated 2,500 Marines on board. They had been scheduled to return to Norfolk, Virginia, just after Thanksgiving; their homecoming will now be delayed several days depending on events, the officials said.
The ships involved are the USS Iwo Jima, the USS New York and the USS Gunston Hall. At the end of last week the ships were west of Gibraltar, before the decision was made to turn them around and send them back to the eastern Mediterranean, where they will remain for now.
The U.S. military also maintains three to four ships off the coast of Israel that are capable of shooting down ballistic missiles. That deployment has stretch for some months in the face of a potential ballistic threat from Iran.

Remember at the time of the First Gulf War we claimed Saddam Hussein had the 10th largest army in the world, under reported was that Disneyland in Anaheim , California had the 10th largest submarine fleet in the world. Israel used to break the throwing arms of young Palestinian boys that threw rocks at them. Is it a wonder that those boys now men that suffer pain in their elbow from this Israeli practice now choose to throw rockets.
Hamas has never been interested in peace. The charter for the organization even calls for Israel's destruction. The solution for peace however relies with both societies. Hamas has to renounce violence and Israel has to acknowledge taking Palestinian land arbitrarily because they are tired of negotiating is wrong. Until both sides can take some of the blame for there mutual problems there will be no peaceful solutions.

But, because Israel is really good at shooting and has decent weaponry and training to do a thorough job, Hamas is even more angry because when Israel shoots they hit what they are aiming at.
If Hamas would just stop sending rockets and stop trying to destroy Israel, maybe the Palestinians could grow a strong economy and everyone could have a job, have plenty to eat, own property, etc... Oh, but that does nothing to destroy Israel does it? And, of course that is the reason Hamas exists. Ok, keep throwing stones, Hamas, and Israel will shoot back with real bombs.

If someone were lobbing missiles non-stop into my city I would be in favor of much more effective means to end that and would not be concerned with there being many more casualties amongst the attackers. If you poke a big dog with a stick don't cry about it when you get bit in the hopes of getting sympathy from others. The people most responsible for the deaths in Gaza are those that chose to launch missiles at their neighbor instead of forging ahead with a two state peace process.
Even though there are high Palestinian casualties, they are still launching rockets at Israel. Even the public is agreeing with Hamas' attack on Israel. So Israel needs to attack Hamas some more until they learn not to launch rockets at civilians. Expect even higher causalities IF Hamas stops, so will Israel. If Israel stops, Hamas will continue. Hamas is the aggressor.

This is crazy. In twelve years the Gazan rockets have only killed something like 26 Israeli's (that's 26 too many) and in less than 24 hours, Israel has killed quite nearly that many (22). Look at the numbers folks. Why on earth would anyone believe the rockets would ever require an "evacuation?" Those ships are not there for evacuation. They are either there for their own action, or they worry about something "bigger" than Hamas coming after Israel.

Can y'all just stop fighting? My husband is on one of those ships, and all of us that were expecting them home already are pretty upset about it. The US military has an obligation to help with Israel should it be seen fit, and there is no use fighting about it. I don't understand how you can see such views. If not for the education and science, Isreal would be the same as the Gaza strip. Instead they decided to use the money they got from other countries as a source of science and schooling, therefore they are able to protect themselves and their innocent. Also, for years Hamas hid the fact they were launching rockets from school tops and hospitals were there were the innocent and frail, yet their is no public outcry for this autrocity. LOL. A lot of crazy talk indeed. There is something to the USS Liberty story, though...the controversy around that was never settled. The Israeli air force acknowledged attacking the ship. The debate is over whether it was an accident or not.
The USS Liberty was a ship in an active war zone and our president "forgot" to tell Israel that we were spying. Also, an Egyptian ship was reported in the area to have been firing at the Negev coastal city of Eilat. Israel mistook the Liberty for the Egyptian ship.
Remember at this time Israel was having to defend against Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and even Saudis. Their Air Force was running 24/7 with no breaks and they had little time to be flying around trying to identify ships.
Or we could skip going to your pathetic conspiracy sights and look up video from actual news networks showing the Palestinians holding massive celebrations after the 9/11 attacks.
