CNN Poll: 57% of Americans say Israeli attacks in Gaza are justified

A majority of Americans say that Israel's current military strikes against Gaza are justified, according to a new national survey.

CNN/ORC International poll released Monday indicates that 57% of the public says Israel is justified in taking military action in Gaza against Hamas, with one in four saying the attacks are unjustified.

The fighting began last week with rocket attacks into Israel from Gaza, to which Israel responded with an aerial offensive. Palestinian emergency services said Monday that nearly 100 people have been killed in Gaza, with around 750 injured. The Israel Defense Forces said three people in Israel have been killed, with nearly 70 injured.

The fighting has raised fears of a widening conflict, and the possibility of a repeat of Israel's 2008 invasion of Gaza following similar rocket attacks by Hamas into Israel.

"Although most Americans think the Israeli actions are justified, there are key segments of the public who don't necessarily feel that way," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Only four in ten Democrats think the Israeli actions in Gaza are justified, compared to 74% of Republicans and 59% of independents. Support for Israel's military action is 13 points higher among men than among women, and 15 points higher among older Americans than among younger Americans."

Whenever Israel defends themselves "Palestinians" complain. I am not racist and I really try my hardest not to judge someones religion, but when has anyone in that region ever been known to be the innocent bystander? When have they ever been the peaceful people who are just fighting for a good cause? The "Palestinians" have said they do not want peace, they just want the Jews out of Israel. THEY DO NOT WANT PEACE. Most people do not know the truth about how the Jewish people obtained Israel or why the "Palestinians" are actually as mad as they are. I won't even get into that, unless requested haha. Sadly, very sadly, I can make this judgment with evidence to back me up... Muslims in general, in that area, do not value life. They are not peaceful there, I am sorry. The middle east is horrid. They don't even treat their own people well. Muslims cannot even get along with their own people. You can't really back up a group of people who use children to suicide bomb soldiers. Even if I am not on their side when they're in war, I understand defending yourself... But not using children! And not sacrificing your life in order to kill others ... It says something about them. I understand that not everyone who lives there is like that. I really do! But a lot of them are. We don't do suicide bombing in America. That's INSANE. That type of thing shows they have no fear. The fact that they have no fear is a very scary thing. They have killed their own people, and blamed Israel. If you didn't really know any better, you would believe them. Because who would kill their own people? Jewish people occupied Israel before Islam was even a religion. That area of land has been conquered over and over again. Give me a break, you know? Israelis wanted to live peacefully... Muslims do not. They never freaking do. I don't know why. And when people say Israel is oppressing the "Palestinians"... Lol they oppress their own women, their own people. There was never an independent state called Palestine. They were going to split the land (which was just sand, it was not GOOD land... Israel made it as beautiful as it is today by working hard which the "Palestinians" would never do which is why the whole time they were colonized there they did nothing with it) but the "Palestinians" didn't want to split the land. They want it all. I mean damn, we're stupid as hell. The people who voted in favor of the "Palestinians" are DUMBDUMBDUMB. They don't like us haha. I have heard people saying they should get as much say in the UN and all this bs. Just another group of people that will be against America. If you believe for one second that nobody had any knowledge that Bin Laden was hiding in Pakistan, you're about as gullible as they come. Israel is our only ally over there. We shouldn't be against them! We have to help them.

Also this is an important point if we make Israel hand over the land to the "Palestinians" we should probably give back land to the Native Americans and Mexico. We keep kicking them out but I mean originally it was their land till we conquered it! Hmmm...

I also don't hate Muslims at all. This post would make you think I do but I don't. I respect everyone, and everyones religion. I don't think that all people who follow Islam are bad and I don't think that every women who has a hijab on was forced to by her husband who beats her or any of that stuff. I'm actually pretty educated when it comes to Islam. You have to realize though, there are very few moderate Muslims in the middle east. They're pretty extreme there. You can't always give people the benefit of the doubt. You have to use your brain.

So if you think that Israel just attacked Gaza out of nowhere for no reason, you should probably educate yourself. DEFENDING yourself is necessary.

Why is it OK for anyone to shoot rockets at Israel and it’s a sin for them to fight back? Israel is a member of the UN and recognized as such. Hamas replaced the PLO as the leadership of “Palestine "Gaza" and should be condemned by the UN for allowing rockets to be fired from their soil. THAT IS WHAT SHOULD BE IN FROUNT OF THE UN. Not pointing to Israel for defending it self. Israel is not going away and neither is the Palestine population. The problem is Islam will not let other religion’s co-exist in its mist. Until that happens there will be no peace.
Christianity and many other religions have a dark history but for the most part have come out of their dark age. Islam has not allowed it self to come out of its dark age.
Until that happens the non-Islamic world can not trust Islam’s leadership
Do something to earn our trust.

I as well would like to combat the misinformation out there concerning this outrageous, illegal, immoral strike on the Gaza Strip. Unfortunately I am not surprise 57% of Americans believe Israel is justified in it's offensive. Both the mainstream media (including CNN!) and the US government have been complicit in neglecting pertinent information as well as the blatant dissemination of misinformation concerning the causes behind the Israeli attacks. They are consistently biased towards the side of Israel. The Gaza Strip has been occupied by the Israeli military for years. The Palestinians have been forced to endure illegal embargoes, warrantless searches and seizures, and a permanent blockade of Isreali forces around what territory they have left. This oppressive situation is what lead a few individuals, whose actual level of involvement with Hamas is unknown, to fire rockets across the border into southern Israel. These rockets have resulted in 3 Israeli deaths over the past 4 years. In response to the actions of a few fringe individuals, Israel has launched over 500 missiles into Gaza in the last week, killing at least 116 Palestinians. Well over half of the casualties have been civilians with at least 27 children and 11 women killed. Gaza's central media station, home to Palestinian and international journalists, known in the past to have been frequented by CNN's own reporters in Palestine, has been hit by at least 3 missiles in the past 4 days. This is Israel's so called "self-defense."

About a week before the escalated rocket barrage, ISRAEL KILLED TWO PALESTINIAN CIVILIANS, one was a 13 year old boy. The western zionist controlled media YAWNED. Then Israel killed Al Jaabari, a Hamas commander who was at that moment in possession of a Jewish Israeli negotiated peace deal when Benjamin Netanyahu ordered his murder. WHY did Israel do these things? SOme have proposed it is because of the UPCOMING ELECTIONS and Bibi and Ehud Barack hope the war stance improves their re-election chances. (Leaders usualyy are re-elected during times of war, see US history if you doubt this.) Either way, there is PLENTY of evidence to implicate ISRAEL ias the prime cause of this latest carnage.

MORE ABOUT ISRAELI CURRENT INTERNAL POLITICS- The former head of Israel's secret intelligence service, Yuval Diskin, recently called Benjamin Netanyahu "messianic" and said Netanyahu was DANGEROUS for Israel's security. Diskin ALSO PUBLICLY CALLED ISRAEL A "BELLIGERANT" and "RACIST " STATE! Diskin is a VERY HIGH LEVEL Israeli and Americans SHOULD LISTEN CAREFULLY TO WHAT HE SAID.

I think before we throw stones, we might want to look at our own activity in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. Hamas is a TERRORIST group. If they do not want to sacrifice the lives of the Palestinian people, then they should stop pretending they want peace and get the hell out of Israel. Hamas does NOT want peace, they want the destruction of the Jews. We will NEVER let that happen. The Holocaust was enough!!!

Define 'terrorist'. Then try to differentiate the United States and Israel from Hamas. The United States has just finshed destroyng over one million innocent people in Iraq based upon lies about weapons of mass destruction all for the privatization of that nation's natural resources and to gain greater control of the Middle East.
This CNN Poll is CLASSIC PROPAGANDA- they have omitted the fact that IDF soldiers killed two Palestinian civilians and then a HAMAS COMMANDER who was at that moment pushing a peace deal, BEFORE the Palestinians escalated the rocket attacks.

And where does CNN get off on taking a poll of less than 1/10 of 1% of the population and declare the balance of that is how everyone thinks?! Thank goodness we don't allow them to handle our elections!

Sorry, Marvin, but Israel does belong to the Jews! After WWII, few countries would accept the Jews. Israel was declared a place for the Jews to go and it belongs to them!! If we follow your logic, America still belongs to the Native American Indians! In addition, the Plaenstinian people could move to ANY surrounding country that is Arab/Muslim. The Jews would never be welcome in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, etc. Why can't this conflict be solved – forever- by moving the Palestinian people to countries they would probably have better lives? Israel has belonged to the Jews since the time of your Christ.

        Hey Susan,

I'm wondering how much you know about the history of Palestine. That land has not "belonged" to the Jews since the time of Christ. Actually the Jews left Israel after the destruction of their Temple by the Romans. This is known as the Jewish dispersion or Diaspora. Jews relocated all over the Middle East, Africa and Europe. So how can it still belong to them if they left? But again, let's be realistic here, not all the Jews left during the Diaspora, just most of them. Since then the land of Israel/Palestine has passed through countless hands and been claimed by numerous nations and states. But by the time of British colonization in the 1700s it was primarily inhabited by Arab Muslims and remained so until Jewish colonization after WWII.

The victors of WWII (US and Britain) "declared" that Israel should be a Jewish state in 1947. The Palestinians who were the majority of people living there at the time had no say in the matter. This brought forth waves of Jewish settlers as well as continued violence and oppression against the indigenous Palestinians, fueled by racism and back by the power of the US and Britain. So really the Jewish occupation of Palestine is nothing more than another manifestation of neocolonialism, perhaps one of the most obvious examples. Indigenous people are once again being oppressed, displaced, and assimilated by the dominant culture. It's a travesty, just as what was done to the Native Americans in this country is one of the greatest blemishes upon the history of the United States.

Is there a right or wrong to this conflict? Does it come down to the right to self-defense justifying the use of overwhelming firepower and the resulting disproportionate civiliam causualties?

Whether it is due to lack of sufficiently sophisticated weopontry or a desire to terrorize the Israeli population, the fact is that Hamas' weapons are incapable of being accurately targeted and just come down on innocent civilians. The rockets are simply not military weopons, but are instead crude, but still potentially deadly, instruments of terror. Although never particularly effective as weapons, the rockets are even more so ineffective as anything but instruments of terror given the "iron dome" defenses available to Israel. Still, as ineffective as the rockets are as instruments of death, they have enormous psychological power – both as a way of easily making the Israelis appear as victims as Hamas pelts Israel with largely ineffective barrages of rockets, and as a way of reminding Israel and the world that Hamas and the Palestinians can still mount some visible resistence to the interment camp life that has become the reality of Gaza for more than a generation now.

As for targeting Hamas leaders, go for it. Leaders should be targeted, as should rocket launching sites, bomb making factories, and any other place that can properly be catagorized as a military target. Hamas should similarly engage in political assasination, but they can't get close enough often enough to have anything resembling an effective program to target Israeli leadership.

So what is it that makes Israel the terrorist? It comes down to the sheer disproportionate numbers being killed in Gaza as compared to the numbers being killed in Israel. True, Hmas has to bear some of the blame for that as it is they who build the bomb factories in civilian centers, launch rockets from populations centers, and hide among the civilian population essentially using the Palestinian populace as human shields. Israel needs to do better in minimizing civilian losses, but there is only so much that can be done.

In the end, it is the nature of warfare where one side possesses overwhelming firepower and the other side has to resort to using the population it operates among as the inevitable innocent victims that are fodder for their propaganda value as they are killed and maimed. That is what is going on now in Gaza, and will continue to go on.

Only the condemnation of the rest of the world is going to change the balance of power. On that score, the Arab world (largely perceived as a Muslim world) is its own worst enemy. On the one hand the Arabs spew hate for Israel and deny it even has a right to exist, and on the other hand they seem to never call their own out for the mindless violence they practice and inflict on persons as equally innocent as the Palestinian civilians bearing the brunt of the death toll.

Change needs to come from both sides, because in the end there really is no right or wrong in this mess – just a lot of suffering, historically born disproportionately by the Palestinian side because they have become perpetual refugees living in what is essentially an internment camp established and maintained by Israel.

Oh, I see. If 10 men attack your family and you kill them all without being killed, that would be wrong because your killing 10 and their killing none would be disproportionate? So, the only way to make it right would be if an equal number of Israelis and Palestinians were killed? This is an illogical ridiculous argument.

The death toll over the past 4 years clearly shows Israel is the aggressor. When Israel stole more Palestinian land and a peaceful group of American protestors tried to block the illegal destruction of a Palestinian family's home resulting in Israel rolling a bulldozer over Rachel Corrie, that was clearly Israeli aggression.
Why don't you explain for us what Israeli hi-ranking Jewish Israeli intelligence officer Yuval Diskin meant recently when he publicly declared Isarael to be a "belligerant" and "racist" state? He held in the IDF the equivalent position of David Petraeus at the CIA.

If only Hamas would separate women and children from the city and place them in a secured area away from the fighting, Hamas has no respect for the Geneva Convention. Firing missals using civilian women and children, as a shield is not an honorable way to fight a war. As an Iraqi Veteran it doesn’t surprise me to hear or see Arab women and children getting killed, while in Iraq the Muslim militants always ambushed from a Mosc or a hospital and using women and children as a shield, those people have no respect for women and children

It is time for the United States to treat Israel and its obnoxious policies for the Palestinians in a similar manner to that applied to Apartheid era South Africa. The terrorist state should be embargoed and their Prime Minister indicted for war crimes like those applied to those who committed similar crimes against humanity after the breakup of Yugoslavia. Gaza should have a no fly zone imposed similar to that imposed between the two wars in Iraq. The Thugs ruling in Tel Aviv are certainly no better than the worst of Hammas. Taking sides with Israel will not help do more than prevent an eventual settlement of the differences that are well seeped in the blood of innocents.

Per your "theory" every country in this world can be "convicted" with such crimes.

Why don't we condemn every Leader of the world's nations while were at it since how backing any of them will not help us solve our differences.

Of course Israel should do what it has to to protect itself, but what everyone seems to have lost sight of is the fact that Israel has OCCUPIED Palestine for decades.

Palestinians are being held in the largest concentration camp in the history of the world, on a daily basis, armed Israeli soldiers determine what every Palestinian can do. The Palestinians have an equal right to defend themselves.

A majority of Israeli citizens are against the occupation of Palestine (same as US citizens were against Vietnam)

the problem is the US has let the right wing of Israeli politics take over our foreign policy.

Surprisingly, the only sane policy is being promoted by a pro-Israel group:The Political Home for Pro-Israel, Pro-Peace Americans:

In German concentration camps they did not let the Jews, Poles and Russians smuggle in rockets, guns and explosives.

        The number is close.

But note, everyone in Gaza realises that Hamas puts their weapons in public places to deter any retaliation to their attacks.

Secondly, making any counter attacks seem inhumane due to the fact it will effect innocent lives.

Why do the people of "Gaza" do nothing?

Pretty obvious they either just don't care, or are just tolerant of such acts.

They should really just rebel, or simply leave their "country".

Kind of hard when no one around Gaza wants Palestenians.

Kind of hard to kill just the militants since the hide their rocket sites behind schools, hospitals and mosques. lol. Let them stand where they can be killed.. if not let the anger and the pain of the victims and collateral damage fall on their heads. Btw, how many civilian casualties has since the U.S. entered Iraq and Afghanistan? Or how about the U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan? The UK Daily Mail reported the for every trrorist killed in Pakistan by a U.S. drone we killed 49 civilians. By this measure the Israelis are doing pretty good.

Instead of wasting money on Israel, someone who has proven not to be our ally, we should spend it on our education system so such STUPID uninformed opinions like this don't multiply.

Anyone that knows the whole situation does not support what is happening at all. You cannot STEAL land from a group and it be ok because another country says it so, Balfour Declaration of 1917. What about everything that had happen between then, 1917 and 1948. Using white phosphorus against humans is against the UN, its INHUMANE and Israel has done this in the last 6 years. Why is no one talking about the young man that was shot and killed on Nov 4th on at a boarder crossing. He was mentally retarded and if he would of been given treatment right away maybe could of lived, but NO. You have to study history to know more about this, the big picture. How soon USA forgets or doesn't even know about the USS Liberty. All very sad. Give them them the TWO states that is required or FIND A NEW HOME Israel. You are a bully and not wanted in a location that you HAVE BEEN TRYING TO STEAL FOR DECADES almost a century now.

So it looks like a popularity context now...

Let's see how it all began: last Wednesday Israeli killed one of Hamas leaders Ahmed al-Jabari as he was driving his car down the street in Gaza. Palestinians were not happy with it and start firing rockets. Israeli claim that they under barbaric terrorists attack and responded with airstrikes. Then it goes...

The KEY QUESTION IS THEREFORE: What provoked killing of Ahmed al-Jabari on Wednesday?

Was he killed at this moment just because Israel got an an opportunity, i.e., the moment came just when Israeli informants in Gaza managed to track him down in his car.

Did he engage in any terrorist activity at the time when he was killed?

I afraid to sound silly, but what about elections is Israel? Planned for January 2013 I guess. And Likud Party/ Benjamin Netanyahu are not very confident or something, so they feel that Israel needs a Boost in Patriotism. We have been through this before, did not we? Operation "Cast Led" in January 2009. Curiously, the timing was right back then again: December 27, 2008 Operation Cast Led begins - February 10, 2009 Knesset elections.

...looks like Ariel Sharon is a pacifist by the modern Israeli standards, and Yitzhak Rabin is nothing else but a traitor.

This little war is nothing else, but a pre-election menstrual cycle. Why do we have to take sides?

The assassinated Hamas leader Ahmed al-Jabari was actually centrally involved in brokering the truce with Israel, and an intermediary between Palestinian parties. He had also assume responsibility in for reducing or eliminating the rocket or other attacks upon Israel. His history is ugly, but we're the country that invaded Iraq on a pretext (with prodding from the Israelis and PNAC Zionists) and killed over 100,000 people, brought a million to untimely deaths, created five million refugees.

      We're none to talk.

That Iraq disaster was something for which public support had been ginned up with little basis. Let's hope that the media does not fail us again and let the Gaza-Israel conflict be seen as one-sided. If anything, it is one-sided on the part of Israel, given the extent of their enormous military superiority.

Israel is really testing her American supplied fire arms, missiles and the most trusted iron dome missile shield to prepare for the bigger war of the Century, the coming IRAN WAR. The current Israeli war is not going to end unless the grand testing operation is complete and received green signal from the Pentagon.

I afraid that it is the other way around: Israel is actually ahead in technology. Intercepting these short-range missiles and even artillery shells is the sate of the art and the most technically challenging problem. And Israel is not doing badly.

Yes, 90% money, but NOT THE IDEAS. Obviously no country in the World, except Israel, can afford to be militarized so much relative to its population and the size of economy. Yet, even Intel CPUs starting with Nehalem architecture are 100% Israeli's design since Intel outsourced its brain to Israel back in 2009.

I wonder if that poll still holds today? Launching rockets at civilian-rich areas is simply not ethical, and I can't say that's justified when Israel does it any more than it is when Hamas does it. Israel loses all of its moral standing, all of its supposed 'innocent victim' status when it engages in its tactics. Seriously Israel – try a two state solution and just see if that solves things. Just try it. You have tried this aggressive, psychotic, vengeful, destructive, killing-of-innocents strategy over and over again. It doesn't work. And eventually, in 100 years, Hamas will have a nuke. So why not try a two state solution? Just try it!

The occupation the blockade the targeted assassinations are all ment to make the palestinian people so uncomfortable that they move away. It's also the right wing in the arab world that call on the destruction of israel. There all in the wrong, every time one of them points there finger they have three pointing back.

What an ignorant comment. The vast majority of Israelis have lived in this land all their lives, it was their ancestors who left Europe and the Holocaust. By your logic, all Americans should return to Europe, Africa, and Asia and return control of this country to the Native Americans. But then, they're not firing rockets at American citizens every day. By the same logic, we should be allowed to fire rockets at the illegal immigrants from Mexico invading our border because "it's not their land!"
