Obama administration continues explanations on Benghazi decision-making

By Jill Dougherty and Mike Mount

With the election over, the Obama administration is releasing more information to Congress and journalists about the deadly attack on the U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya. Post-election, the questions of the Obama administration's handling of the attacks continue, and the Pentagon and State Department Friday released information to try to further clarify decisions made before, during and after the attacks.

The information is the latest attempt by the various U.S. agencies to explain their role in the attacks which killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans. After being bombarded with requests from congressional committees for documents about the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, the State Department said Friday it has handed over a number of documents to Congress for review.

And Friday afternoon the Pentagon released and hour-by-hour timeline highlighting when Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and his senior commanders were told of the attacks and when decisions were made to move forces to assist. The information shows that the scramble to respond was not even close to being in a time frame to help fend off the attack, with special units only getting in position a half-day after the attack ended.

The Pentagon's timeline does not uncover any discrepancies from what has been said publicly by Panetta, but it does show that the first U.S. military troops to arrive in Libya in response to the attack came more than 14 hours after the initial attack began.

While the U.S. military was playing only a small role at the time in Libya, the timeline shows that some of the troops called up by Panetta had to travel long distances, while others were closer to North Africa.

Pentagon releases official timeline of Benghazi attack

But Pentagon officials and Panetta say that regardless of the time and distance, military forces could not be inserted until there was a better understanding of what was happening on the ground in Benghazi.

According to the timeline Panetta and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were told of the attack about an hour after it started, as both men were on their way to the White House for an already scheduled meeting with President Barack Obama. Thirty minutes later the president was directing the Pentagon to do all it could to assist, according to senior Pentagon officials.

In a letter sent to members of Congress, including Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, Panetta explained there were no military forces close at hand to assist the Americans as they came under fire in the two attacks that night.

McCain and other Republican senators criticized Panetta's response.

"Over the past month, we and our colleagues have sent 13 separate letters to senior administration officials. ... Unfortunately, Secretary Panetta's letter only confirms what we already knew - that there were no forces at a sufficient alert posture in Europe, Africa or the Middle East to provide timely assistance to our fellow citizens in need in Libya. The letter fails to address the most important question - why not?" according to the joint letter by the senators.

"This question is all the more puzzling considering that the attack in Benghazi occurred on the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in American history - a day when we know that our enemies around the world are plotting and planning to hit us again," according to the press release.

But Pentagon officials briefing reporters on the timeline said the military was aware of the significance of the date and U.S. facilities in 16 countries in Africa were operating on heightened alert that day, as well as being aware of several hundred reports indicating threats at U.S. facilities around the world.

"We were fully cognizant of the threats around that date ... we had forces situated to be able to respond. We are not omnipresent or omniscient," one official said.

Panetta has said that there was no advance notice of imminent threats to U.S. personnel or facilities in Benghazi ahead of the attack.

U.S. officials addressing claims that armed aircraft could have been sent in short notice to the scene to assist and repel attacks again said that would have been impossible to get those aircraft on scene in time.

"There were no alternative aircraft options available and those options would not have been feasible," according to the defense official. They were not feasible, officials have told CNN, because those aircraft, an AC-130 gunship and armed drones, would have created collateral damage and most likely killed civilians in the area as well Americans because there was no clear picture on the ground on exactly what was happening.

The timeline shows that the attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi started about 9:42 p.m. local time in Libya, and about 90 minutes later a surveillance drone was over the compound, but it was unarmed.

Three hours after the attack started, Panetta and other senior leaders discussed possible options for further violence if it was to break out. Panetta then gave verbal orders for Marine anti-terrorist teams from Rota, Spain, to prepare to deploy to Tripoli and Benghazi. Panetta also ordered a special operations force (SOF) team which was training in Croatia and an additional SOF team in the U.S. to prepare to deploy to a staging base in southern Italy.

As U.S. troops were moving, a second U.S. compound came under attack about eight hours after the initial attack, killing two former Navy SEALs acting as security contractors.

Five hours later, all U.S. government employees and the bodies of the dead were out of Benghazi and in Tripoli preparing to leave Libya. The U.S. SOF team training in Europe finally arrived to their Italian staging grounds about 10 hours after the Americans left Benghazi.

About an hour after that, a Marine anti-terror team arrived in Tripoli to secure the embassy there, and 30 minutes later the U.S.-based SOF team arrived at the Italian staging ground.

Pentagon officials said the second Marine team did not deploy to Benghazi because there were no longer Americans in the city.

The State Department has struggled with answering questions about its decision-making surrounding the attacks and said Friday it handed over documents to Congress, which has bombarded the department with requests from committees for documents on the attack, and there could be more.

"We have now made documents available to members and staff on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.

Nuland said the department told the committees and their staff "they can see these documents as many times as they'd like to see them for as long as they'd like to see them."

One of the senators studying the documents Friday was Bob Corker, R-Tennessee, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Corker and with fellow committee member Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Georgia, had written to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressing for disclosure of all communications regarding security in Benghazi leading up to the attacks.

The senators complained in their letter that cables, e-mails and other communications regarding the security situation in Benghazi "had been leaked to some Congressional offices and media outlets, resulting in conflicting reports in the press."

Nuland denied accusations that the administration was withholding information, telling reporters, "We've really done our utmost under the secretary's instructions to be fully compliant, transparent and open with the Congress."

The documents, some of which are classified, are being provided to members of the House and Senate and their staffs who, Nuland explained, view them in rooms on Capitol Hill designated for dealing with classified information.

The State Department spokeswoman also said senior officials will be on Capitol Hill next week to brief members of Congress.

Tuesday, Undersecretary of State Patrick Kennedy and Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security Eric Boswell will brief members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Wednesday, Kennedy and Boswell will brief members of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.

Thursday morning, Kennedy will testify before the House Permanent Select Intelligence Committee; in the afternoon, he will testify before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Friday morning, he will brief the Chairmen and Ranking Members from the House.

All sessions will be closed to the public, Nuland said, at the request of Congress.

Clinton will not testify. Nuland said Clinton was asked by the House Foreign Affairs Committee but the State Department wrote back to the chairman to say that she will be traveling abroad next week.

You might shop for poker playing cards from the nearby shop. It is no question why so many players turn to poker tournaments to advance their seat and their successful purse. Gambling addicts make bad options and endure the consequences.

As people say, the devil is in the details... And it could not be more correct in this article. Having said that, permit me say to you just what exactly did do the job. Your writing is actually highly convincing which is probably the reason why I am making an effort to comment. I do not make it a regular habit of doing that. 2nd, despite the fact that I can certainly see a jumps in reason you come up with, I am not necessarily confident of just how you seem to unite the ideas that make your final result. For the moment I will subscribe to your position but hope in the foreseeable future you actually link the facts better.

Panetta is telling you what you do not wish to hear. We are hated in these countries that we took over by subversion and there are not enough Marines in the world to protect every single American who has gotten involved in these far flung escapades. It can not be done. Stevens was not at the embassy. He was 400 miles away from the Marines. Why? What was so important in Benghazi that could not be handled at the embassy? He sure waswnt processing visa applications out there. He was doing CIA work.

The only sensable comments I've seen here are from Karl Yannish, well worth repeating:
"Benghazi is a hotspot in one of the most dangerous areas in the world, and unless you've been there, you don't know what you're talking about). NO ONE was lying – they were relaying information as it was relayed to them. Remember that no Americans were present on the ground to report the exact events – what do you NOT understand about that???"
"The Ambassador and the ex-Seals CHOSE to accept assignments in one of the most dangerous regions of the world. They were attacked by terrorists and killed. End of story."
If Stevens did in fact feel threatened, why did he remain there instead of returning to Triopli – with all due haste?
The Benghazi facility is NOT an embassy! Sure, Stevens is dead now and cannot answer for his decisions. However, his choosing to stay in Benghazi resulted in getting himself and others killed. What was so important in Benghazi that he could not leave and return to the safety of our embassy in Tripoli? Dead men can't testify! Investigate all you want, but the fact remains that Stevens is responsible.

Many of the people here criticizing the Benghazi response have watched too many old time western movies where the wagon train is under attack and all of a sudden the calvary appears over the hill and saves everyone. Sorry folks, in real life it doesn't happen that way.

Unless you work for the CIA or the DoD you don't have a clue as to what actually transpired. As Mark Twain once stated; "First get your facts; then you can distort them at your leisure."

I found this bit of information very interesting.... Airstrikes and military intervention of this type is always the presidents call......
' A Special Operations team, or CIF which stands for Commanders in Extremis Force, operating in Central Europe had been moved to Sigonella, Italy, but they were never told to deploy. In fact, a Pentagon official says there were never any requests to deploy assets from outside the country. A second force that specializes in counterterrorism rescues was on hand at Sigonella, according to senior military and intelligence sources. According to those sources, they could have flown to Benghazi in less than two hours. They were the same distance to Benghazi as those that were sent from Tripoli. Spectre gunships are commonly used by the Special Operations community to provide close air support.
According to sources on the ground during the attack, the special operator on the roof of the CIA annex had visual contact and a laser pointing at the Libyan mortar team that was targeting the CIA annex. The operators were calling in coordinates of where the Libyan forces were firing from. '

I cannot even believe how today's reporters suck. Are reporters just plain dumb, stupid? Are they required to pass a kiss my ass and suck my way deal to become one. Most of the nation hears them but also hates them. The reason why is most left wing liberal reporters have to lie or coverup to make a story. That is why left liberals cannot hold a radio talk station. The left doesn't have enough to lie about.

CNN has credibility issues according to an 11-3-12 interview with CNN Reporter Amber Lyons.....The “Most Trusted Name in News” must ultimately decide whether it’s in the business of government propaganda or journalism, because despite the network’s claims of objectivity, I learned firsthand CNN is having trouble biting the hand that feeds it. “I’ll take this time to remind network executives of a quote by George Orwell, "Journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed. If the MSM had not lied and covered up so much and Obama had won, it would be the peoples choice. But they jumped through hoops to cover up and hide the facts so in a sense rigged the election. I hope we can get back to letting the people make their own choices and not the choice of the media.

Obama was asleep according to news reports when themurders took place. In order for them to go in and help the Americans they needed him to say "GO". Thats why Petraeus was forced out today so that he won't testify to that truth. We need a President who is alert not drunk or drugged. We never had a President who fancies himself a rock star. I can't understand why he isn't charged with dereliction of duty and treason. He laughs about these charges about Libya because he knows his Chicago style thugs will protect him.

We did have a President that fancied himself a movie star. He also had Alzheimer. If I remember a little thing called Iran-Contra was a deal selling arms to the Iranians to help fund the Nicaraguan Contras Not one person went to jail and everyone that would have was pardoned by George H.W. Bush. How about the WMD we went to war with Iraq over that cost over 3000 lives and another 30,000 troops injured in Iraq? Bush drew us from the people responsible from 9/11 in Afghanistan to Iraq and a 9 year war there.
I will take any mistake President Obama made here over the crap that has preceded him.

How do we know if he made a mistake? All the facts are not in yet. Also we may not know all the facts to due to on going operations. Lets step back a minute and forget the politics(is that even possible?). When people talk about rushing troops the rescue it surprises me how many for get about the events of black hawk down and Battle of Takur Ghar. You don't just rush in troops without understanding the situation unless you want more people killed. The public watches to many movies.

He may have made mistakes but it is way to early to tell. People were wanting to place blame right after we found out our people were killed. My problem is instead of waiting for ALL the facts we want to rush to judgment now.
Anyone remember Richard Jewell? He was the guy that saved peoples lived 1996 Olympic bombing. People were quick to say he was the one responsible causing him to lose his job and go into depression. After a full investigation we find out it was the extreme right wing murder Eric Rudolph. A man responsible for killing 2 people and injuring over 150 more. Had the investigation stopped he would have killed more. So remember to hold judgment until ALL the facts are in unless you don't mind more people being killed.

It sucks they died. But really!

Bush was president when terrorists killed US citizens on US soil, but I still respect Bush because I know what evil people do is not his fault. Just like I know what evil people do in LIBYA is not Obama's fault.

And there is no super duper lying consipiracy... if there is then lets have some more talks about 9/11.. oh wait it is stupid to think that was a consipracy right?

Maybe they would have been safer if our Govt had done their job and provided adequate security after multiple warnings that the situation was getting worse. Or better yet, they should have just closed the Consulate and pulled them the hell out of there, just like the British and Red Cross did with their people.

way to send in the calvary to help our American patriots. Wait a minute, maybe that's why Obama made the smart alec comment about horses & bayonets – he didn't have any calvary to send in. Now the explanation is that help was 10 hours or more away – come on common sense dictates that that is a falsehood, really, with all the turmoil in the Middle East 10 hours? I think not – I think cowardice is a much more believable explanation. It is a shame that American's serving their country in "war zones" can't count on help & will be hung out to dry. Bet that reduces the number of volunteers willing to go into harm's way. Leadership at its best!

We will keep bringing up Bush every time we have to pay the consequences for his actions as president. It takes great leadership in recognizing sending more troops into an unknown situation will get more people killed. Live video feed doesn't tell the whole story it only gives you and idea of what is happening. Do you think the president makes battle plans? No it is the generals that draw up battle plans and advise him. Based on the plans a decision is made on how to save the most amount of American lives.

Too pat; too convenient; the incurious media and Obama sycophants. Nothing wrong here, just a bunch of angry right wing, ignorant conservatives that live on lies and have recently been handed a lesson. The majority of comments here fit in with CNN and the rest of the media. The media chooses sides. The media, like the administration picks "winners." Lefties can freak out and say I drink the kool-aid and watch Faux News (wow, good one, kind of old though), but that changes nothing. It just means more people will miss extremely bad things happening right under their noses. Oh yeah, I know...Faux News and the Conservatives/Republicans were fooled...ha, ha, ha...they lost...ha, ha, ha. We all lost something whether you want to notice or not (not just the racism and stuff of course).

The surface for the new normal is being paved as we all read, rant and rave. To those that don't know any better, but think they do, you and we will get what you voted for.

The really funny thing is, is that most of the policies that Obama has implemented, are policies that were there, just hanging in limbo. They are also policies that had been in place for several years that Congress decided to toss out during the Clinton and Bush administrations. The only totally new thing is "Obamacare", and that was taken almost directly from a republican.

All smoke..the report never addresses why protection was not provided in advance of 9/11. It just rambles on about what everyone did "after the attack" and how well they performed. Conclusion..the Administration was not prepared in advance to prevent the attack and loss of life, therefore someone was not doing their job to insure are people were protected. You can spin it anyway you want, but the truth is the Administration "failed" here and should be graded "F" for failure!!

Have a hearing before congress and put all people involved under oath.

One thing guaranteed. The people trying their damnedest to work this into the biggest crime in the history of the world, have never once, not once, supported the president in anything he's ever done. They decided they hated him before he was even elected the first time. There will never be anything that he can do that they will not react to with ridiculously out of proportion negativity. I've read some blogs stating one of the guys defending our compound shined his laser on where he thought the fire was coming from and it sounds like they only do that when they know they have air support.

There's absolutely no proof, and no reports by any other agency (other than Fox) that anyone was told to stand down. All reports say that Obama told them to do all that they could to help. Considering that these things have been happening long before Obama got in office, it makes it clear who the petty people are. In 1998, several U.S. embassies were attacked, killing 200 people and wounding 5,000. Attacks much like Benghazi and worse happened at least 12 times during the Bush administration. All of you saying Obama is completely at fault know nothing about history and what really goes on in the world.

You will cover for him because he is a Democrat so get off that high horse. Lets look at the known facts. They tried to blame it on a movie for 2 weeks even though within hours it was known to be a terrorist attack. They denied the refused extra security before hand. A few weeks ago in a congressional hearing several witnesses said yes it was denied or ignored. Then they said the republicans cut the budget but turns out more dems voted to cut it then reps. Now we are at the question of did they refuse to help while the attack was going on. This s what will be discussed in the next congressional hearing. Im thinking since the British intelligence said our response that night was one of utter incompetence there is going to be an awful lot of lying at this congressional hearing. My big question is the administration has said over and over that they didnt have time to respond with air strikes. How did they know they wouldnt have enough time? The attack was in progress and if it was over when they arrived they could have turned around, but there was never even an attempt.

Within hours of this attack, Mitt Romney was accusing the President of sympathizing with the people who killed the Ambassador. A completely ridiculous and offensive claim. Clearly, to the Republicans this was more a political opportunity than a tragedy and that is how they continue to play it. The public didn't buy into their cynical plans to turn this into a scandal during the election and they won't fall for it now. People realize no administration can keep foreign staff in dangerous places safe 100% of the time. As witnessed by the lives lost under previous administrations. It wasn't a scandal then and it isn't a scandal now.

My main question is, are the Republicans trying to fabricate a conspiracy where none exists as a ploy to muddy Obama's successes in the war(s)? Or is their fabrication something more ominous like telescoping the idea to our enemies that we are weak – so they will attack us under Obama's watch? I can't figure out which one it is.

AJ, there was no outrage from the far right wingnuts about the attacks while Bush was President because he was a white republiKKKan. Guys like Larry will only be satisfied if President Obama goes on national televison and proclaims that he ordered his Muslim brothers to attack the embassy and kill our personnel, and that he personally ordered all defensive units to stand down until our embassy personnel were dead.

Larry is typical of the way Fascists work. They don't bother with facts and truth. They pretend to have special knowledge and insight. They may actually believe that our military is capable of being everywhere and doing everything at any time with perfect precision strike capabilities because they live in a fantasy land.

Perhaps, if Bush had not done so very much to make people around the world hate Americans we would not face issues like this one. But, don't expect guys like Larry to be objective or realistic. They are still reeling from the shock of Obama being re-elected and they are not about to allow facts to get in the way of what they believe. It's just the way they play!

Larry, last night I saw the National Geographic channel movie "SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden". I suggest you watch it and then go back over all the news releases at that time. It defies all credibility that the same people who authorized invading Pakistan and are responsible for killing Bin Laden are incompetent in any measure.

Rapid reaction forces are not instantaneous and live intelligence gathering does not mean omnipotence. Like most armchair quarterbacks you know better than the experts, the professionals who do this for a living. Both Secretary of Defense Panetta and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, where directly involved and when they briefed the President they were instructed to do all they could to assist.

Finally we do not live in a world where it is acceptable to indiscriminately kill dozens to hundreds of civilians in military rescue operations. Collateral Damage Assessments have played a critical role in the decision making of every administration which has taken actions in the Middle East/North Africa. Obama was likely given options, one of them was a high collateral damage option, and he likely told them to do everything possible to minimize collateral damage. I am sure Obama and his administration will be vindicated in the upcoming Senate hearings.

Are you people defending the president really that completely naive?

Some of you are saying that the Republican Congress cut funding for embassy security across the board. If that is true then WHY on 9/11 was there a full Marine contingent at our embassies in France, Britain, Spain, Italy.....????? I can go on and on with other embassies with FULL SECURITY CONTINGENTS. Doesn't seem like funding was cut that far for these embassies to not be secured in countries that are generally friendly to Americans. But on 9/11, with no security taken from embassies that didn't need the security, our ambassador, an assistant, and 2 SEALS are SLAUGHTERED in a country and region of Earth that is so far from friendly it boggles the imagination.

Are you people really that naive to believe that an AC130 was not orbiting the area hours before the SEALS died a 4am. What in the world were the SEALS pointing lasers at intended targets for. These are not laser pointers, these are highly sophisticated devices that only the AC130 and Predators will home in on and destroy. The only thing that wasn't onsite was our President's resolve. We had heroic individuals onsite that gave their last full measure of devotion to our county and you naive individuals think this is a non-story. You naive individuals are totally foolish.

There is credible evidence here to implicate the President in a coverup of the facts.

Have all you military experts forgotten the Battle of Mogadishu and "Blackhawk Down"? That battle resulted in approximately 20 US military KIA, 80 wounded, and 1 helicopter pilot captured. Helicopters were shot down with RPGs. And that was with huge military forces in the immediate area. Plus it resulted in hundreds maybe thousands of civilian deaths.

We now know that the CIA, and at least one of the SEALs, was involved in an operation tracking Libyan weapons which had been looted from arms depots (including SA-7 handheld anti-air missiles) and maybe assisting in their transfer to Syrian rebels. Fox News is suggesting that the Ambassador went to Benghazi to have a meeting over these weapons transfers. Given that those weapons were in Libyan militia hands, it is entirely feasible that those assaulting our Libyan compounds were also armed with SA-7s to defend against aerial assault. How much did this play a part in the military response? How much of a part did the need to have sufficient forces on hand to rescue the rescuers play?

So why didn't they use the gunship if it would have been a slam dunk, thank you Mam, if they did? The gunship was most likely eliminated as an option due to the high risk of unacceptable collateral damage and friendly fire casualties. I am sure that this is what we will find out at the upcoming Senate Hearings.

The true "failures and mistakes" made in Benghazi were made by Ambassador Stevens. Obvioulsy, he felt threatend yet when additional security was denied why did he stay there? Stevens put himself and others in danger. He should have left Benghazi and returned to Tripoli. Why did he stay? This should be the primary question!

This administration is still trying to run out the clock, hoping that it gets buried in the daily news and continues to get pushed back. Well, I for one, will not let this go. They need to answer for the deaths of these 4 brave human beings who are really dead and their families are left behind to suffer. They are still suffering and we can't let this get swept under the rug. I heard that the morale of the U.S. service men and woman, accross all, is about as low as it can get. They now know that their government is NOT there to protect them. SCREW Obama and all his cronies.....Valerie Jarrett being at the top of that list. She is evil!!

The attack on the Benghazi consulate has been blown totally out of proportion compared to previous attacks on U.S. Embassies, Consulates and compounds.

Anyone that doesn't believe everything humanly possible was done in Benghazi to protect the consulate is delusional.

In the now famous speech Romney made to his loyal supporters in Florida where he talked about the 47%, he also made this statement saying he would use a hostage crisis or a situation where Americans died to gain favorability.

"And yet, in that election, in the Jimmy Carter election, the fact that we had hostages in Iran, I mean, that was all we talked about. And we had the two helicopters crash in the desert, I mean, that was the focus, and so him [Reagan] solving that made all the difference in the world. I’m afraid today that if you simply got Iran to agree to stand down on nuclear weapons, they’d go, ‘Now hold on. It’s really a…‘ I mean, if something of that nature presents itself I will work to find a way to take advantage of the opportunity."

Using the deaths of U.S. diplomatic personnel to further a political agenda is disgusting.

Watch all news, all outlets, compare and make the most accurate analysis I can. Spend about 3 to 4 hours easy everyday. How many coincidences does it take before one starts to wonder. Benghazi, Drone shot down, Panetta announcement right after election. The Valerie Jarret thing (not sure about that one yet) unless the good people in Iran can produce the pictures they claim they have. Just all coincidences though. That or a bad case of tunnel vision.

Is it not just amazing that Panetta, the affair and resignation happened right after the election. A drone shot down Nov 1st which is considered an act of war happens to be a top secret mission so we could not say anything. How long did they know about Panetta which is considered a huge security breach as the head of the CIA is loaded with classified information. Announced on a friday, just coincidence...And the video and Benghazi. You know what happens when you roll a snowball down a hill it just keeps getting larger. Same theory and effect when you keep distorting the truth. I'm sure you will get the correlation here. Starting to feel a little foolish all ya Obama supporters, just wait a couple months

Thank God for information other than the main stream media. If I had to depend on them alone, I would be talking like half the people on this post. Un-informed. Well, Remember the Maine. History course. . The Maine was sunk in Havana Harbor in 1856, with the loss of over 250 lives, and we STILL do not know how it happened. Two newspaper men J. Pulitzer and Wm. H. Hearst were fighting for circulation and insisted that it was a bomb. Hearst sent F. Remington to Havana to get pictures. Remington requested to come back saying that there was no war. Hearst replied, "You get the pictures, I'll get the war". and he did. Within a year we were in the Spanish American War. This was the sourse of the term "yellow journalism".
This seems exactly what Murdock's Fox network is doing with the Bengazi incifent. Even to the yellow banners often topping off its site. The public does not need to know everything in a developing situation that could compromise the investigation and relations with a barely stable country. Libya is hunting/punishing the murderers, and we do not need to be publishing every detail. In spite of Fox news we are not at war.

Everyone should be concerned that the press have been reduced to being the mouthpieces of political parties.

Fox News is the mouthpiece of the RNC. The RNC picked Romney even before the Republican primary started and Fox News didn't even pretend to be neutral. They shielded Romney from all criticism and kept attacking his opponents.

Every other news outlet is the mouthpiece of the Democrats. They shielded Obama from all criticism and kept pounding Romney. It's hard for me to feel sorry for Romney, since this is the same thing he was doing to his opponents via Fox News.

What can we, the people, do to make the press independent? Can we, regardless of our political affiliations, call the press out when they abandon their integrity as journalists?

I agree!!! The media needs to do their job. Give the facts and only the facts. Give the voters all the facts and let them make their own educated choice. When a media covers big bird for 2 weeks before the presidential election in the biggest country in the world. An election that will affect the whole world, they are not doing their jobs. The voters though could do a better job also of investigating their options. They should cut the media out and what politicians tell you is t he truth. Read bills and read their records. Make an educated choice and not vote the opinion of the nightly news anchor.

Statements like your prove that the US really is far behind the rest of the world in education. We are neither the largest country in terms of land mass or population. China, with over 1.3 billion people, is the largest by population, and is about 4.5 times larger than us. India, with over 1.2 billion people, is more than 4 times larger than us.

Please try to educate yourself before making statements that are so easily refuted. With access to the Internet there is no excuse for saying what you did.

I don't understand why we're still talking about Benghazi. There's zero evidence that Obama did anything wrong, let alone the straight up watching soldiers die on camera while cackling maniacally some people seem to be implying. It's clear cut by any actual hard evidence we've seen that whatever moron decided it was a good idea to have so little security on an embassy in such a dangerous area should be fired, and I really doubt decisions on the minutiae of the security detail in Libyan embassies are in Obama's day-to-day. This is probably the most clear-cut situation to come out of Libya since the revolution started, but since this is an election year we have to have a ridiculous Benghazi-gate circus and politicize the death of two soldiers, directly in opposition to the wishes of at least Glen Doherty's family.

If you wanna talk politics, talk about the real issues. This is manufactured controversy at its absolute worst.

      You got it wrong!
Stevens went to Benghazi on his own accord, no one ordered him to go! He felt threatened and insecure, but stayed there instead of returning to Tripoli where he would be safe. Stevens screwed up! The Benghazi compound is NOT an embassy! Since he felt security was inadequate, he should have left – especially before Sept. 11. Sure, no one wants to put blame on a dead man, especially a very capable man. But seriously, Stevens screwed up!

...and Bush was in charge for almost 9 months before the 9/11 attacks, with warnings given to him in briefings that terrorists were training to attack the US using aircraft, but somehow he was not responsible for the failure to act in that event. Had McCain been President during the Benghazi attack, Republicans would attack anyone who dared question his judgment.

President Obama is not Superman, he cannot see long distances, run faster than a speeding bullet, he's not more powerful than a locomotive, he's not able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, he doesn't shoot laser beams from his eyes or fly around the world so fast he can turn back time. He can't know the consequences of every action.

However, unlike Bush, his Administration is willing to be cooperative and transparent in relating the facts of this event. Fox News has been overblowing the events of Benghazi as some kind of horrible failure of the Obama Presidency, when it was simply a tragic error in judgment on the part of many players. Lives were lost, that debt will be paid. Someone will answer for Benghazi, but putting all the blame on one man? That's petty and divisive.

Of course, that's what the Republicans are best at.

Biogirl – who is the one accused of murder? The President? His staff? Or, should it be – I don't know – the a$$clowns who actually pulled the trigger? When someone breaks into your house and kills your family, you blame the guy who broke in and killed your family, not the cop having lunch 30 miles away or the planners who built your house. Maybe we should be focusing on attacking the people who actually committed this atrocity, rather than trying to just heap blame on a President you didn't vote for.

Because Congress agreed to send them there. You sound like a liberal nut job. Don't we all learn in like elementary school and high school that the president cannot send us to war on his own. Your very own Joe Biden voted to send them to war. And when we went to war 47-60% of Americans supported it.
You contanstly bring up Bush but he is not the issue here. The issue is whether a coverup exists or not. People refused to answer question typically end with them trying to hide something.
Funny how people are hyocrits criticizing fox news but at least they are asking questions. CNN and mainstream media is just so fair and balanced when it comes to Obama.

I am Canadian and tried several times to advise you people to vote for Mitt Romney – Almost did it but not enough. Now CIA guy has an affair – the guy who handles the money wants out – everybody is running from him. The best would be if he could get impeached and if Romney would then still have a chance but I know that is dreaming.

Anyway American People you saw it coming and chose to stay for another 4 years of what you had for the last 4 years except it will be worse – He will need to make more appearances on the view during the day. Pleased to see this article on CNN. Sad and disappointed in their abominable failure to cover it pre-election. After our Navy killed bin laden, el Pres said "As a country, we will never tolerate our security being threatened, or stand idly by when our people have been killed. We will be relentless in defense of our citizens. We will be true to the values that make us who we are." I wish he and his administration remembered that after the first and second prior attacks on our embassy. Election is over, now let's have the truth.

Well that sucks.Thirty minutes after being notified your president orders all help sent. No troops nearby, no way to use air support, and Chuck Norris is crazy, so no help there. No four Americans dead and a which hunt in progress. One thing you can count on though: whoever killed those people? They'll be caught. Your president seems pretty adamant that no one gets away with harming Americans.

Ordered by whom and when? In this report, the one right above our comments, the information is that your President ordered all help within 30 minutes of being made aware. How is "Barry" at fault?

        November 9, 2012 at 10:20 pm |
      • Bill the Cat

The report is bogus. It's a political cover-up. There was a drone overhead with a live feed within an hour of the beginning of the attack.

        November 9, 2012 at 10:22 pm |
      • cur68

And your proof of troops is what, Mr. Cat? Post a link to that information. It had better be a real news source, too and those troops had better not be cub scouts or some such. Also, I do understand that there was a drone overhead. But that information was in the report above our comments and it is made clear that drone strike s would not have helped. So what's your proof of troops nearby, who ordered them to stand down, how do you know this, and what precisely would a drone in the air done inside an embassy building?

        November 9, 2012 at 10:33 pm |
      • Biogirl2012

The article above is inaccurate. It was made public a few weeks ago, in reports from the Military that troops were told to stand down. One of the other three men killed, died because he disobeyed his orders to go and try to save the ambassador. There were drones overhead with live feeds to the pentagon and the situation room, the question two weeks ago was why the president was NOT in the situation. So, if you go back and look for it it's been known for a couple of weeks that Obama, Clinton and Biden knew that it was happening as it was happening and the troops were told to stand down

      • cur68

Interesting. I shall be paying attention to the time line here. One thing I know from experience is that timelines matter. Troops over and hour away, Ambassador missing by 30 minutes into the attack, president notified at the one hour mark, all aid instructed at the 90 minute mark, over an hour to get air cover there (prep time counts, trust me) and do what? Bomb the place to dust? Kill em all? Troops take longer to assemble than fighter jets to scramble, and troop carriers are slower so they would have been about another hour, maybe 2, back from the jets, I suppose...in the dark landing against a committed enemy with likely anti aircraft weapons...hmmmm. You volunteering to be on the helicopters with those troops? You ballsy if you are. Your embassy should have been better defended BEFORE the attack. But that's why it was targeted. It wasn't adequately defended. If it had been it wouldn't have been them attacked but some other embassy. Then we'd be having this same tired, post facto "Ida done it better" argument.

        November 9, 2012 at 11:55 pm |
      • Biogirl2012

But that my friend, is part of the point here. Previous requests for defensemweremignored. The embassy was attacked twice in recent months and the state depart did not send more too defend, nor did they move the ambassador out of the area. I'm sorry this is tiresome for you, but these were our breathers...your human breathers and they were left to die...ignored over and over. It's is all just so so wrong...morally and ethically....and legally

Biogirl– you need to do more homework– Benghazi is a consulate, NOT an embassy. The ambassador was stationed in Tripoli and was only in Benghazi two days for meetings. He brought two body guards with him. There were less than 10 people stationed there with 3 interior security guards and 10 gate guards. *HOW* many security officers do you think should have been there to secure those 10 or so people?? Including the personnel of the CIA Annex, there were only 30 Americans in Benghazi. According to Associated Press, the Pentagon, and other reports, no one was told to "stand down" and there *WERE* re-enforcements sent from Tripoli during the battle, a six member response team who arrived during the lull in fighting. How many troops could have been have sent from Tripoli without endangering the security at the embassy there?? You should know that sometimes being in the state department is like being in the military– sometimes you know you will be sent into harm's way, and it can be dangerous. Those "previous requests" were only requesting two more security guards, the total that they were authorized. How many Libyan civilians do you think we should have killed by sending in F-16's to strafe the ground area??

No it makes me a "job creator".

More rich people always = jobs

It's why we're rich. We spend it all creating jobs.

        You believe that?

        November 9, 2012 at 10:54 pm |

What I believe is that virtually no one gets hired by poor people. For thousands of years, people have earned money by helping richer people get richer. But apparently your genius has discovered a new way – you can get richer by giving more of your money to politicians! Brilliant!

Last I checked Michael Dell hired some guys out of his basement with not so much as a nickle.

        Rob,

it's funny, when a republican is president and someone loses a job, it's obviously that person's fault. They tell him "maybe you need to go back to school" or "maybe you didn't study hard enough or work hard enough".. Guys like Tom Delay (when he's not in jail) say things like "these lazy people just need to get back to work!"

Suddenly when a democrat is president, the same republicans that used to stand for seld-sufficiency, self-reliance, and are anti-unemployment insurance are suddenly blaming the government for their inability to keep their job?

Okay, here it is, one more time:

There WERE WMDs in Iraq. And we got them.

We knew they were there because we are the ones who sold them to Saddam, and had to clean up our mess. But there apparently weren't ADDITIONAL WMDs manufactured by Saddam, a-la the mobile labs we were told about. Or there were, but certain parties we needed would be damaged if it were known, so it wasn't reported.

        Got it?

        No there were NONE..

Quit rewriting history. I know you voted in that administration, got 4000 dead, and are embarrased, but that's on you:

Fightin' A lost cause there, Phreddy. They are sidetracking you with the old WMD slight of hand. The war in Iraq was about oil, not WMDs. The finding of small caches of precursor chemicals and small caches of weaponized chemicals do not a cause for war make. Carl Rove, the human canned ham, even admits this. It was an attack about oil and nothing more. The "Making WMD s" thing was all cooked up to look like "facts" and all it turned out to be was the stuff Bush Sr. had sold Hussein. This is why most of the governments of the world stayed away from that lunatic charge on Bagdad. Jr. went in trying to get a puppet government installed for cheap oil. Killed millions, enriched Halliburton and his cronies therein and got away with it. All those lives traded for some oil.

Come on did you guys even read the article? Tell me you at least read past the headline? Please?

They found trace elements of WMDs that could have gone back as far as 30 years – at some point during the Saddam-Era. This is what you want to tell our widows that their husbands died for? Trace elements of WMDs that were long destroyed for decades?

When they couldn't find one stinkin barrel? And we all know they tore that country apart. If they found even 1 barrel it would have been all over Fox News.

But TRACE elements? That's what you're going with? 4000 dead and you think that trace elements that they can't even pin to a timeframe justifed that?

Now I know you're hillbillys from a southern state, because you're just not that bright.

        Rich,

trace elements from an undetermined timeframe is not proof of anything. They couldnt find ONE STINKING BARREL in the entire country.

Like I said, had they found anything it would have been front page news on Fox for months.

In the absence of such detail, I have no choice but to believe the facts. There were none.

What minimal WMD were found were all remnants of pre-Desert Storm (1991) munitions, well expired and quite likely "lost" in the accounting process. Not one single round of current manufacture was found. No mobile labs. No bio-labs. No nukes. The UN's inspectors were right – THERE WERE NO WMD.

It took 5 minutes for them to answer questions about Bin Laden. It will take about 9 months to answer questions about the murders in Libya and they definitely will not tell the truth about it. Everybody knows that. Attention: Republicans, let all the taxes expire over the cliff - what's the difference, we're going down the tubes anyway with this President. He only wants to win all the time, he's got a screw loose.

The story clearly states that as soon as Obama was briefed on the matter, he got on the phone and ordered the Pentagon to provide all the assistance that was necessary. Obama demonstrative decisive leadership. You are so partisan that all you want to do is blame Obama. And I am sure that after 3000 people were killed under the watch of Bush you were calling for his resignation too, right?! Give me a break. Pres. Obama, we thank you for your leadership.

So within 90 minutes he's directing the pentagon to do eveything they can. That means within 90 minutes he knew it was an attack, not a protest gone awry, but a planned attack with weapons no one would have at a protest. And it took 2 weeks to for him to quit saying it was the result of a youtube video? It took 2 weeks for him to say it was an attack? And why are they releasing this now, if this really made the President look good, it would have come out before the election.

    – What was the timeline for that?
    – Where was the evidence? The emails?
    – Why were we lied to?

This wasn't negligence this was a conspiracy at teh highest levels of government! Why isn't anyone being held accountable?? This wasn't an accidental oversight – this was planned from the start and not a single conservative wants that imformation leaked!! Phred,

You clearly have the common misconception that former President George W. Bush "lied" to the American people (& the rest of the world) about Saddam Hussein possessing W.O.M.D's. This was not a lie, but rather was later discovered to be false information. Bush was going by trusted intelligence from what he & many others felt was reliable, and he felt he was acting accordingly to protect us from a major threat.

From the late 90's through the early 2000's, the following prominent Democrats were very much in agreement with Bush's belief that Hussein had W.O.M.D's:

      BILL CLINTON
      MADELEINE ALBRIGHT
      NANCY PELOSI
      JOHN KERRY
      HOWARD DEAN
      AL GORE
      HILLARY CLINTON
      TED KENNEDY
      SANDY BERGER
      ROBERT EINHORN

I could name more, but hopefully you get the idea. In the future, please refrain from the tired & stale whining Liberals tend to do about Bush being a war monger who belongs in prison. It's criminally ignorant & it has no place in an intelligent discussion. And also, don't waste my time by demanding where I got this EASY TO FIND information.....it's common & proven knowledge, son.

        Son,

just because these notable democrats voted to go to Iraq because they trusted the administration doesn't mean the administration didn't lie about the facts. They knew the facts were sketchy and they sold them as gospel. It's all in the presentation.

I know you're a sarge and you just follow orders, but use your head for once. We all know the real truth was that Saddam Hussien attempted to assasinate GHWB in Kuwait in 1991. Do I need to get you some links to read about it?

This was a family vendetta, paid for by the blood of 4000 of your fellow soldiers. I'm sorry but your comrades were just a tool used to even the score in a family feud.

        Wake up, you got played.

The difference between those that you listed and Bush is they didn't get into a war. Seems to me we should have waited like Clinton did. Maybe he wasn't as dumb as the Republicans made him to be.

And to think that Obama got the popular vote all the while he turned his back on the Ambassador and 3 Navy Seals, and then lied about it as he smiled with his pearly whites. This country is taking a major nosedive with Obama in charge. He should be impeached. Clinton was for merely lying about screwing around. Surely the loss of 4 Americans while he jetted off to Las Vegas for his fundraiser would merit impeachment. "all the while he turned his back on the Ambassador and 3 Navy Seals,"

Two former Navy SEALS. You almost had your facts straight.

"and then lied about it "

      Example?

"This country is taking a major nosedive with Obama in charge."

Which is why the economy has continued to improve for the last four years?

"Surely the loss of 4 Americans while he jetted off to Las Vegas for his fundraiser would merit impeachment."

Your statement makes no sense. We lost 8 Americans in Afghanistan that same week. Is that Obama's fault as well?

All the media and people here are missing the cover up which is the problem. The administration lied to the American people and agencies blaming a video for two weeks which inflamed the Middle East and Northern Africa. Kind of a big cover up when we now know the admin. knew it was a terrorist attack during the attack. Why are they lying for two weeks? Why did they not tells us about the drone that was shot at by Iran before the election? So many cover ups how do you keep track?

      • Karl Yannish

No, Al, YOU'RE missing the point – there was NO cover-up. Why does everything have to be a conspiracy just because Fox says it is? The administration released information as it became available to them – as was reported, there was mass confusion on the ground in Libya (it's not like this thing happened in downtown Peoria – Benghazi is a hotspot in one of the most dangerous areas in the world, and unless you've been there, you don't know what you're talking about). NO ONE was lying – they were relaying information as it was relayed to them. Remember that no Americans were present on the ground to report the exact events – what do you NOT understand about that???

        November 11, 2012 at 6:27 am |

The disgrace, AL, is people like YOU. How ignorant are you? The fact that you cling to a Fox-created story, made up for political points in an election that your guy lost proves that you cannot think for yourself. The Ambassador and the ex-Seals CHOSE to accept assignments in one of the most dangerous regions of the world. They were attacked by terrorists and killed. End of story.

No we say Faux news because of several reasons. One being they were refused to broadcast in Canada because it does not allow lying in its news broadcasts. Two they fought for the right to be able to lie in in broadcasts in the United States. Three the leader of Fox news was the leader of the RNC. Four the leader owner of Fox is Rupert Murdock the same guy that caused the News of the World paper in England to shut down because of its practices. Five Fox receives daily the RNC talking points in order to move the Republican party agenda. Six Fox News donates money to the RNC.
These are the easy points without much effort to bring up. If you doubt what I am saying research it. Prove me wrong and I will retract my statements.
