FIRST ON CNN: Iranian jets fire on U.S. drone

By Barbara Starr

Two Iranian Su-25 fighter jets fired on an unarmed U.S. Air Force Predator drone in the Persian Gulf on November 1, the Pentagon disclosed on Thursday.

The incident, reported first by CNN, raised fresh concerns within the Obama administration about Iranian military aggression in crucial Gulf oil shipping lanes.

The drone was on routine maritime surveillance in international airspace east of Kuwait, 16 miles off the coast of Iran, U.S. officials said. The Predator was not hit.

Also: U.S. adds to Iran sanctions

"Our aircraft was never in Iranian airspace. It was always flying in international air space. The recognized limit is 12 nautical miles off the coast and we never entered the 12 nautical mile limit," Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said in responding to questions from reporters after CNN reported the incident.

Little said the United States believed this was the first time an unmanned aircraft was shot at by the Iranians in international waters over the Gulf.  In December of 2011, a U.S. surveillance drone crashed in eastern Iran.  Iranians claimed to have shot it down, and created a toy model of the drone to celebrate its capture.

Little stopped short of calling the incident an act of war although the Pentagon was concerned.

Also: Obama faces world of challenges in second terms

Two U.S. officials explained the jets were part of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps force, which has been more confrontational than regular Iranian military forces.

At least two bursts of gunfire came from the Su-25s' cannons. The drone started to move away but the Iranian aircraft chased it, doing aerial loops around it before breaking away and returning to Iran.

The Obama administration did not disclose the incident before the presidential election, but three senior officials confirmed the details to CNN on Thursday.  They declined to be identified because of sensitive intelligence matters surrounding the matter.

The drone's still and video cameras captured the incident showing two Su-25s approaching the Predator and firing onboard guns.

The Iranian pilots continued to fire shots that went beneath the Predator but were never successful in hitting it, according to the officials.

U.S. military intelligence analysts are still not sure if the Iranian pilots simply were unable to hit the drone due to lack of combat skill, or whether they deliberately were missing and had no intention of bringing it down.

But as one of the officials said, "it doesn't matter, they fired on us."

Little said the United States has to assume Iran was trying to bring down the Predator.

The United States protested the incident but had not heard back from Iran.

Iran has, at other times, been confrontational in the region.  In January, the U.S. military and coast guard had close encounters with Iranian Navy vessels which approached at high speeds and exhibited provocative behavior.

Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador to the United States, declined to say whether his country knew about the incident before Pentagon officials

Two seperate Iranian pilots in fighter jets fire repeatedly on an unmanned aircraft and fail to hit it. Not exactly a convincing display of military power. How embarassing.

Su-25's couldn't even make it off the ground in Iraq 1. 2 suu-25's and 2 migs went against 2 f-15's in the only air battle of the whole campaing. all 4 were eliminated easily. No way they could hit a Predator....lol.

I am not sure I completely buy this story. I certainly cannot say what happened, but do Iranian jets fly over international waters frequently? It seems to me either they had to leave Iranian airspace intentionally to seek out the drone, or the drone was not over international waters. Given Iran's tenuous position, it seems unlikely they left their airspace to find drones to shoot at. It certainly is possible this is the case, but it does leave plenty of room for doubt.

the nobel doesn't mean anything to me after it was given to europe this year anyway. just saying. then sending drones is an act of terror, not a try to avoid conflict through peaceful means. plus what's the point of spending so much on drones if we can't even afford to save our own economy ? and this for what ? killing 2 or 3 terrorists that we'll be replaced the very next minute ?

        November 8, 2012 at 5:11 pm |
      • cedorris

The problem with these drones strikes is that they are occurring outside of the legal system and away from a battlefield. Declaring the world a battlefield in the war on terror is a Bush policy that gives the executive branch power to execute people for being SUSPECTED of a crime. My democrat friends used to join me to protest this kind of behavior when Bush was in office, but now they seem to be cool with it.

@crossingouramerica – what do you not believe? That the drone was unharmed? That Iran shot at our drone? That they fly Su-25s? Or that the US doesn't have SU-25s to fly around wherever they please?

Iran has fired on military equipment before. See the US drone they claim they shot down/brought down. And they've shown aggressive actions before. Like the Iranian ship that was speeding towards a US destroyer and was turned back after the destroyer had to shoot warning shots.

Last December, 2011, another US drone aircraft was lost to Iran. It apparently malfunctioned and landed with minimal damage in IRAN. Don't recall whether that spy plane was armed .. but it was flying over IRAN. The US Military denied it until it was conclusively demonstrated to be spying over Iran. Would be interesting to see the video from the drone – it would help indicate the severity of the threat to the unmanned American spy plane.

Bis Shiz and his ilk are in for a civics lesson over the next 4 years. Let's see how America fares as people decide to shelter their money instead of investing and hiring in this economy. Threaten people with confiscation, they hide their toys. Economic illiteracy prevails today, and you Big Shiz will pay the ultimate price.

Unfortunately, Literate, I've come to realize that they have no ability to attach consequences to actions. So telling them that X will lead to Y makes absolutely no sense in their world.

So feeding them the "Bush's fault" line is easy peasy, and this can/will be trotted out indefinitely, with great success.

SO how many of you "armchair generals" enlisted and are ready to go to war with Iran over them shooting a few rounds at one of our drones out of amusement and seeing if they would get a reaction? Ypu see, this is what tools like you and scool yard bullies do, they pester hoping to get a rise out of you. The best course of action for a 10 year old boy would be to hit back, and for what? Them wasting a few rounds shooting at nothing? and then we get to go to war with a real military who would make the iraqi's look like school girls and the taliban look like, well cave men, because the are... NO, the correct response is to ignore it, just like when handling your non-sense, chest beating, chickenhawk blather. It's a drone and it wasn't hit. There was a russian sub of our coast, do you suggest we go to all out war over it with the russians too? This stuff happens all day, everyday all over the world and until AMERICAN blood is spilled directly by Iran, just ignore it.

Really David, because I'm in too...but I've been in long enough to know that we don't need to go looking for any more excuses to be involved in any further wars. No, not without damn good reason. Our economy can't sustain it right now, and our military needs the break to be frank. Can it handle it? Yes. Does it need to right now? No. Let the politicians do what they do toward a non-military solution (if it's possible) and quit volunteering the rest of the services to be stuck in yet another backward middle-eastern sandtrap.

What about you? Are you enlisted? Is it YOUR American blood we are waiting to be spilled? Or just YOUR family and/or friends?

No one is suggesting that the US should go to war...however, the incident is important and the American should have been told about it prior to the elections. Maybe President Obama would still have been re-elected, but he should have been forced to comment on what the US plans to do about an increasingly hostile Iran. We should not wait until American blood is spilled to respond to hostile nations...unless you are volunteering your own.

Yes, I am a veteran. My husband is an active combat veteran. Our fathers are combat veterans. We have several siblings who are veterans. Should I go on...or have I established my credentials for your satisfaction?

Who is a terrorist? Just take a look on History :

Iran Air Flight 655 was a civilian jet airliner shot down by U.S. missiles on 3 July 1988 as it flew over the Strait of Hormuz at the end of the Iran–Iraq War. The aircraft, an Airbus A300B2-203 operated by Iran Air, was flying from Bandar Abbas, Iran to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. While flying in Iranian airspace over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf on its usual flight path, it was destroyed by the United States Navy guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes (CG-49). All 290 onboard including 66 children and 16 crew perished.[1] The incident is ranked ninth among the deadliest disasters in aviation history. It was the highest death toll of any aviation incident in the Indian Ocean and the highest death toll of any incident involving an Airbus A300 anywhere in the world.

It was an UNARMED drone. The S-25s were LONG gone before any type of response could be generated. What they NEED to do is arm them with a couple of air-to-airs and see what the response would be....it would be Iran condemning us for shooting down one of their jets, although they might not want to admit it was an unmanned aircraft that shot it down. And, of course, there is the Gang Who Couldn't Shoot Straight factor, too..

this is not anything new by all means, this was actually leaked out 10 days ago. And to top it off, Iran actually has the Drone Jet in their possession and has had china Air Force intelligence specialist's brought in to analyze the everything on board. Obama was asked by the secret service for permission to launch a rocket at the drone to dispose of it, or to set off a self destruct mechanism already on board the drone. Both options where denied by Obama.

The Father of Lies has said he believes in all of the above regarding energy and yet he is on record saying anyone can open a coal fired power plant and he will force them into bankruptcy. Let me get this straight – Iranian fighter pilots couldn't bring down an unmanned, unarmed drone. Doesn't really say much about the competency of their pilots or military. Israeli pilots made very quick work of the Iranian drone launched by Hezbollah, complete child's play for the IAF.

The SU-25 is a dedicated ground attack aircraft designed originally for destroying armored vehicles. It has very little air to air capability. There is no radar or sophisticated fire control system. The aircraft is a bomb truck and the gun is designed for killing tanks. Iranian pilots do not have much training either as spare parts for their aircraft and money for fuel are scarce.

Ho ho ho ... a bunch of girlie men on here crying about 4 dead in Benghazi.

"On another story, 40,000 Americans died in Iraq to help President Bush liberate his Muslim brothers. Republicans support the Bush War 95%-5%. 'Those American boys did not die in vain' said one Republican. 'They died to bring freedom to our Muslim brothers, because we really love the Arab people'."

Oh, where is my hankie ... those poor 4 guys camping out in the middle of a civil war, surrounded by Muslims who for some reason, don't seem to appreciate us coming in and killing 500,000 civilians. I don't need anyone to tell me what's going on with this president and his destructive agenda. On the other hand, Obama's followers only respond to dirty tactics and small-minded ideology, and can't even get themselves to a voting booth by themselves and without handouts.

Well what did DNCNN and PMSNBC and John Stewart tell you what to think today, BobZemko? Can you knuckle draggers on the liberal left speak more than one sentence without drooling out "Rush" or "Faux News" references?

The narrow minded stupidity of that comment is mind numbing. Almost as hilarious as the melodrama in general on these forums. It scares me that you can vote.

I don't like Rush Limbaugh and have never listened to him, but he at least CARES that those men were brutally murdered. Do you care, Bob?

Is that like the deception of Bush and WMD in Iraq? Did you call for his impeachment for that also?

      November 8, 2012 at 4:08 pm | Reply
      • FREEDOM

That wasn't impeachment grounds. We had been attacked on our soil – catastrophically – our intelligence lead us to the WMD's at the time, and they carried out the mission and kept our land safe for seven years after that – Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice vouch for this. Bush deserves credit for that – not impeachment. Unlike, the sleaze Clinton, who's in the oval office carrying on with an intern and then lies under oath to the American people as a sitting president. Because of his narcissism, he didn't step down when he was impeached. Obama ignored intelligence – in real time – and three servicemen and an Ambassador were murdered. He then instigated a cover-up – which is now under investigation – this is what could lead to impeachment.

Iran would never fire upon our drone if anyone other than Obama was our president. World leaders do NOT fear Barack Obama because he bows to them, just do a google search with the words "Obama Bows" and see what comes up.

Yeah, all the years of intel and the "enhanced interrogation techniques" that led up to the US figuring out where he was. . .who was president then????

Search for Bin Laden was in place since 2001, your leader did nothing but take the credit of the work of the CIA and Seals. What was Obama gonna do, say no just let him walk?

      • obamaphone

Ya the pakistani man who gave us the info where Osama was at the time, he is the reason we got Osama! He is currently in prison and we are letting him rot in there while Obama takes all the credit. That is just pathedic. But hey, free obamaphones to all that dont want to work! Go Obama, its that easy to win Americans over!

Why should people fear a leader, that isn't a sign of a strong leader...

They may not fear Obama but the certainly have more respect for him than Bush.

It clearly was just to show their love for us. After all, doesn't the entire middle east just love us now that we re-elected Obama? Wasn't all that unpleasantness caused by Bush?

Stop being soo negative. The Obama administration promptly "reached out to the Iranians" after the attack and probably told them that they have nothing to worry about. Now we on the other hand have lots to worry about. $16 trillion national debt, $1.1 trillion deficit, high unemployment, 46 million on food stamps, a fiscal cliff at the end of the year. Happy Holidays.

I wonder how the US would react if Russian or Chinese Spy Drones were operating just a few miles past our maritime borders? Its these double standards that common Americans seem to be consistently blind to.

It happens all the time. Russian bombers test our defenses by seeing how far/close they can get. Has happened since about the 60's. We've never shot one down. There was a Russian attack sub off the east coast last week. We didn't sink it. Get a clue and some historical perspective before you post next time.
