FIRST ON CNN: Iranian jets fire on U.S. drone

Two Iranian Su-25 fighter jets fired on an unarmed U.S. Air Force Predator drone in the Persian Gulf on November 1, the Pentagon disclosed on Thursday.
The incident, reported first by CNN, raised fresh concerns within the Obama administration about Iranian military aggression in crucial Gulf oil shipping lanes.
The drone was on routine maritime surveillance in international airspace east of Kuwait, 16 miles off the coast of Iran, U.S. officials said. The Predator was not hit.

"Our aircraft was never in Iranian airspace. It was always flying in international air space. The recognized limit is 12 nautical miles off the coast and we never entered the 12 nautical mile limit," Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said in responding to questions from reporters after CNN reported the incident.
Little said the United States believed this was the first time an unmanned aircraft was shot at by the Iranians in international waters over the Gulf. In December of 2011, a U.S. surveillance drone crashed in eastern Iran. Iranians claimed to have shot it down, and created a toy model of the drone to celebrate its capture.
Little stopped short of calling the incident an act of war although the Pentagon was concerned.

Two U.S. officials explained the jets were part of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps force, which has been more confrontational than regular Iranian military forces.
At least two bursts of gunfire came from the Su-25s' cannons. The drone started to move away but the Iranian aircraft chased it, doing aerial loops around it before breaking away and returning to Iran.
The Obama administration did not disclose the incident before the presidential election, but three senior officials confirmed the details to CNN on Thursday. They declined to be identified because of sensitive intelligence matters surrounding the matter.
The drone's still and video cameras captured the incident showing two Su-25s approaching the Predator and firing onboard guns.
The Iranian pilots continued to fire shots that went beneath the Predator but were never successful in hitting it, according to the officials.
U.S. military intelligence analysts are still not sure if the Iranian pilots simply were unable to hit the drone due to lack of combat skill, or whether they deliberately were missing and had no intention of bringing it down.
But as one of the officials said, "it doesn't matter, they fired on us."
Little said the United States has to assume Iran was trying to bring down the Predator.
The United States protested the incident but had not heard back from Iran.
Iran has, at other times, been confrontational in the region. In January, the U.S. military and coast guard had close encounters with Iranian Navy vessels which approached at high speeds and exhibited provocative behavior.
Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador to the United States, declined to say whether his country knew about the incident before Pentagon officials

If the drones were over Iraniean air space they have the right to defent themselves and their airspace. However, the article states the drones were over international air space hence they did not have the right to fire upon the drone. It icould be taked as an act of war.

So what, the US reserves right to fire warning shots and even destroy anything that comes close to their vessels in the gulf, in international waters. I guess the Iranian pilots wanted to do the same, to make a point of not getting too close to them. Seeing as how drones are used for some kind of "hidden" strikes in countries where no official US intervention is allowed, I doubt officials really want to go the "our drones officially represent us" ("you fire on them, you fire on us") approach. But selective interpretation of international law is nothing new. Has been under Bush, is under Obama. Always the same old games.

I'd agree about the Iranians too except for a couple things...we have an unarmed drone flying about 250mph attacked by two supersonic cable jets that can shoot missles and fire cannons. As someone who has flown intelligence missions in int'l airspace...and flown with a Soviet Tu-95 Bear a few feet off our wing, I can assure I know what happens out there, and this was pure and simple aggression from the Iranians...and we did nothing about it.

It is very easy to shoot down a drone with guns and target acquisition – unless the drone was being evasive (not likely). So if the drone is still flying today, it is because Iran wasn't trying to take it down. Just sending a little message to the Obama admin. So, Obama, did you get the message?

The war concluded due to peace talks under Nixon and the Democratic Congress voting to end funding for the war. I agree that 'attacking Iran with drones to start WWIII' would be unwise. Iraqi War Resoultion: passed the House of Representative’s 297 – 133 with 82 democratic votes. It passed the U.S. Senate 77 – 23 with 29 democratic senators voting in favor. In fact the resolution could not have passed the Senate without democratic support as there were only 48 republican senators at the time.

Vietnam did start under Ike, and JFK did participate. LBJ was really a Republican, like most southern Dem's. Iraq war had 100% Republican support, was started by Bush Sr and Jr, and yes, some Dem's did vote for it. When it started, only 4% of us had the balls to protest and point out that it will end just like Vietnam, with the 96% who favored it originally stating that it was a huge mistake.

I seem to remember that an Iranian airliner Iran Air flight 655 was shot down in 1988 with all 274 passenger dead. The captain received a medal on his return.
The helicopter from the frigate USS Bagley had been shot at in international waters by an Iranian missile. Bagley and the cruiser USS Vincennes engaged six Iranian fast attack craft in their waters, one of which was the craft that shot at Bagley's helicopter. During this engagement that ill-fated airliner took off from Bandar Abbas, a joint civil and military airfield. Due to a lack of comms on international air traffic control frequenceis and no transponder squawk, Vincennes interpreted the airliner as a hostile Iranian Air Force aircraft and shot it down.
What few in the US know is that the crew of the Vincennes had to pick the bodies out of the water afterwards and the whole crew felt horrible afterwards.
The Iranians later tried to kill the wife of the Vincennes skipper by bombing her car in San Diego. I remember that day well.

The irony is that the Hispanics (who supported Obama) will be the ones to suffer first when Obamacare kicks in. First off, that's 51% of American's who have the countries best intrest at heart. And Iran isn't going to retaliate more becuase he was reelected, they most likley will retaliate less. You would think because the Obama Administration has taken out most of the terrorist leaders and has ended a war for oil that Bush started, that Iran would be scared of the American military, and they are. We have the strongest military in the world and that is not going to change. Romney wanted to add extra boats, planes, and people to the military, but the nobody is asking for it. If the leaders of the any of the branches of the military need extra guys, vehicles, or other resource they would probably ask for it. And since they aren't and since were pulling out of a war (not going into one) we don't need more military force. So we will just wait and see if Iran doesn't retaliate at all or if they declare war. I think based off this info that you know the answer. (Hint: It is that they won't retaliate more, if you didn't get my drift.)

Drone against fighter? The video that tickled me was taken from a drone's camera over Iraq enforcing the "no fly" zone prior to the 2003 Iraq war. The fighter was doing a head on approach and the drone was about to be shot down. In self defense the drone launched a hellfire(anti-tank) missile at the Mig as the Mig began to fire its 23mm at the drone. The bullets reached the drone before the hellfire reached the Mig. One lost drone, but the pilot in the cotrol hut survived. Didn't even raise a sweat.

The Soviets routinely placed intelligence gathering ships in international waters off major US cities and flew reconniassance missions along our coasts and we did not shoot at them. They had every right to be there, just as our drone has every right to fly in international airspace in the Arab Gulf.

Actually Russia does fly their aircraft over the United States...You might want to look up the "Open Skies Treaty" It allows surveillance flights by Russia over the United States and U.S. flights over Russia

This would not be a problem if the Iranians shot at a drone violating Iranian airspace. However, in the article, the drone was in an international airspace. The Iranians have no rights to fire at us in the international airspace, much less the claim to self defense or violation of sovereignty. You really should read before you speak.

1) International airspace has borders. Get to close and countrys tend to send up fighters.

Not true. IRG attacked our naval forces in international waters many times. I was there so don't tell me otherwise. They attacked and sank the tankers of any Arab country bordering the Arab Gulf for a period of time in the 1980s until the US, UK, Netherlands, France and Italy began running convoys of tankers through the Straits of Hormuz and into the Gulf to protect commerce. i was there for that too. Even still, Iran laid mines in the Straits (read what happened to the USS Samuel B. Roberts when she hit one) and our squadron was out there supporting her so she did not sink. The IRG also attacked two floating bases our Army had in the Gulf, built on large oil construction barges and floating in international waters adjacent shipping lanes where Army helos and patrol craft (yes, the Army operates water craft) could aid in protecting shipping in the Arab Gulf. Quite a few civilian ships were sunk by Iranian forces in that period of time. IRG was the worst though, attacking weekly, trying to shoot down naval helicopters and harassing merchant shipping.
