FIRST ON CNN: Iranian jets fire on U.S. drone

Two Iranian Su-25 fighter jets fired on an unarmed U.S. Air Force Predator drone in the Persian Gulf on November 1, the Pentagon disclosed on Thursday.
The incident, reported first by CNN, raised fresh concerns within the Obama administration about Iranian military aggression in crucial Gulf oil shipping lanes.
The drone was on routine maritime surveillance in international airspace east of Kuwait, 16 miles off the coast of Iran, U.S. officials said. The Predator was not hit.

"Our aircraft was never in Iranian airspace. It was always flying in international air space. The recognized limit is 12 nautical miles off the coast and we never entered the 12 nautical mile limit," Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said in responding to questions from reporters after CNN reported the incident.
Little said the United States believed this was the first time an unmanned aircraft was shot at by the Iranians in international waters over the Gulf. In December of 2011, a U.S. surveillance drone crashed in eastern Iran. Iranians claimed to have shot it down, and created a toy model of the drone to celebrate its capture.
Little stopped short of calling the incident an act of war although the Pentagon was concerned.

Two U.S. officials explained the jets were part of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps force, which has been more confrontational than regular Iranian military forces.
At least two bursts of gunfire came from the Su-25s' cannons. The drone started to move away but the Iranian aircraft chased it, doing aerial loops around it before breaking away and returning to Iran.
The Obama administration did not disclose the incident before the presidential election, but three senior officials confirmed the details to CNN on Thursday. They declined to be identified because of sensitive intelligence matters surrounding the matter.
The drone's still and video cameras captured the incident showing two Su-25s approaching the Predator and firing onboard guns.
The Iranian pilots continued to fire shots that went beneath the Predator but were never successful in hitting it, according to the officials.
U.S. military intelligence analysts are still not sure if the Iranian pilots simply were unable to hit the drone due to lack of combat skill, or whether they deliberately were missing and had no intention of bringing it down.
But as one of the officials said, "it doesn't matter, they fired on us."
Little said the United States has to assume Iran was trying to bring down the Predator.
The United States protested the incident but had not heard back from Iran.
Iran has, at other times, been confrontational in the region. In January, the U.S. military and coast guard had close encounters with Iranian Navy vessels which approached at high speeds and exhibited provocative behavior.
Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador to the United States, declined to say whether his country knew about the incident before Pentagon officials

If Russia sent drones to the US border and flew them around, how would you feel? You'd likely use back channels to communicate that you'll shoot if they continue, and then when drone surveillance continues, what do you do? Do you "declare war" on Russia? No absolutely not, you simply shoot some blanks at the drone to make your point. If after doing so, you read that Russians everywhere are crying that you've declared war on them. The Russians were granted safe-harbor in Florida during the hurricane. Meaning, there is some productive communication happening there, and they are not hostile towards us (directly at least). Our subs are for sure all over the world monitoring everything. The point is, we shouldn't take it so personally when other countries are doing the exactly same thing we (US) are and don't want their borders to be patrolled by a foreign nation.

CNN did not withold this article until after the election . . . the article stated that the Obama administration did not release this information until after the election. With all of the free loaders making a determined effort to vote for Obama, it probably wouldn't have made a lot of difference in the outcome of the election anyway.

I believe they can and if so, I believe that Iran had the right to make their defensive position known. The drone is unmanned – can Iran contact the "pilot" and tell them they're getting too close? I choose to believe that these were warning shots. If they really wanted to hit the drone, I'm sure they could keep firing until they hit their mark. There were two planes. I'm sure they had more than 1 "bullet" each. I actually wouldn't be surprised if the US (maybe it was a US drone given to Israel?) sent that drone close enough (16 miles away) to provoke the Iranians then the US/Israel would have a reason to go to war again.

During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.
It's a concern to hear about the Iranians firing on a US drone as well as the Russian nuclear sub skirting the East Coast (which is a throwback to the days of the Cold War). We are very vulnerable right now but many people are not acknowledging the problem. That's never a good sign. Bush tried to warn of the effects of giving people houses who couldn't afford them and Barney Frank laughed it off. Then came the horrible meltdown. I concede that the spending was out of control under Bush and I don't have time to hear about Bush bashing. Because I can Clinton bash right back at you. To see the President and dumb Uncle Joe, Reid, etc., laugh and laugh about all the fires that are burning means that they won't help and after the collapse of the country will just blame the Republicans.

Just curious. I recall the Chinese shot at and brought in a US Spy plane with its large crew and dismantled the whole plane and returned its dismatled pieces at a later date. The Iranians did not take such drastic action against the USA but nevertheless made their presence and capability known. Would the USA not similarly treat those trolling its borders with military planes? Hope there is not a double standard being practised here!

Which I actually went and read that is considered international airspace because of its close proximity to Kuwait. It was an aggressive act out of their airspace. And generally it is 200 miles. It just cant be 200 miles in the gulf.

It was North Korea and they didn't shoot at our plane.The NK pilot was harassing the crew and they clipped. NK pilot died and our crew flew the plane into China and landed. China dismantled it and ship it back to the US after ripping off the technology and stealing any part they wanted.
It is widely agreed that the Persian Gulf is largely international airspace. That would likely be different if Iran had all the land around the Gulf, but it does not. Likewise, we don't target planes in the international airspace between Cuba and the U.S.

That ship was gathering intelligence on US naval bases on the east coast and supporting a Russian attack submarine that was patrolling in the same waters. So.... what's your point?
The chinese incident you allude to was when a chinese fighter crashed into one of our planes and they had to make an emergency landing on chinese territory get your facts straight. when the russians send their backfire bombers to our shores we do scramble our fighter and escort them back to international waters. however we have not fired upon any of them even when they were within our borders. In this case the drone was in International waters not Iranian and it was fired upon. this was a show of force to show the world what a paper tiger we are again just like when Carter was president
What would the US do if an unfriendly aircraft/drone etc was in international waters on off our coast? Well we did that with the USSR in the 70's and 80's. We shadowed them and warned them. If it was an aggressive approach then that was intercepted in international airspace, but patrolling was allowed. We just shadowed them. If the drone broke Iranian territory, they have every right to shoot it down. In international waters they do not. And unless we were at war I don’t think we would do it to them.

Mike, no we wouldn't. Russian subs have been very near our coasts recently and we haven't taken agressive action towards them, at least not that the public has been told about. And the Iranians shot at and missed the drone. They didn't show any capability because they don't have any. And what does the chinese thing have to do with this? I don't see the connection. And the drone was in international airspace. I don't think the U.S. would shoot at planes in international airspace. When has that happened recently? Glad you are in Canada.
