FIRST ON CNN: Iranian jets fire on U.S. drone

By Barbara Starr

Two Iranian Su-25 fighter jets fired on an unarmed U.S. Air Force Predator drone in the Persian Gulf on November 1, the Pentagon disclosed on Thursday.

The incident, reported first by CNN, raised fresh concerns within the Obama administration about Iranian military aggression in crucial Gulf oil shipping lanes.

The drone was on routine maritime surveillance in international airspace east of Kuwait, 16 miles off the coast of Iran, U.S. officials said. The Predator was not hit.

Also: U.S. adds to Iran sanctions

"Our aircraft was never in Iranian airspace. It was always flying in international air space. The recognized limit is 12 nautical miles off the coast and we never entered the 12 nautical mile limit," Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said in responding to questions from reporters after CNN reported the incident.

Little said the United States believed this was the first time an unmanned aircraft was shot at by the Iranians in international waters over the Gulf.  In December of 2011, a U.S. surveillance drone crashed in eastern Iran.  Iranians claimed to have shot it down, and created a toy model of the drone to celebrate its capture.

Little stopped short of calling the incident an act of war although the Pentagon was concerned.

Also: Obama faces world of challenges in second terms

Two U.S. officials explained the jets were part of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps force, which has been more confrontational than regular Iranian military forces.

At least two bursts of gunfire came from the Su-25s' cannons. The drone started to move away but the Iranian aircraft chased it, doing aerial loops around it before breaking away and returning to Iran.

The Obama administration did not disclose the incident before the presidential election, but three senior officials confirmed the details to CNN on Thursday.  They declined to be identified because of sensitive intelligence matters surrounding the matter.

The drone's still and video cameras captured the incident showing two Su-25s approaching the Predator and firing onboard guns.

The Iranian pilots continued to fire shots that went beneath the Predator but were never successful in hitting it, according to the officials.

U.S. military intelligence analysts are still not sure if the Iranian pilots simply were unable to hit the drone due to lack of combat skill, or whether they deliberately were missing and had no intention of bringing it down.

But as one of the officials said, "it doesn't matter, they fired on us."

Little said the United States has to assume Iran was trying to bring down the Predator.

The United States protested the incident but had not heard back from Iran.

Iran has, at other times, been confrontational in the region.  In January, the U.S. military and coast guard had close encounters with Iranian Navy vessels which approached at high speeds and exhibited provocative behavior.

Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador to the United States, declined to say whether his country knew about the incident before Pentagon officials

The Iranians will hit us with The Bomb soon after they get it.

Load one on a yacht, sail it to NYC or LA and set it off . There will be no proof of where it came from so retaliation will not be an option.

Remember what they said when Iran hacked their RQ-170?
It crashed due to malfunction inside Afghanistan, then they said in crashed inside Iran due to malfunction, now they are claiming it crashed inside Iran for "some reasons".
Now they are saying their unarmed! (to gain sympathy!) drone was over the international waters! on a classified routine mission! (they were monitoring the Sardine population in the Persian Gulf perhaps!) when two unprovoked! Iranian jets opened fired at it but missed!( Su-25 has a built-in two-barreled 30 mm cannon with a fire rate of 3000 shots per minute!).
In a few months they will admit they were trying to penetrate the Iranian airspace and make up for the humiliation of HezbAllah drone operation over the occupied Palestine but Iranians saw us before we even get in and scared us away !

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty country since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

And it's amazing how America still rules the world. Moohaha!
By the way, economists predict the debt will go down in next 5 years no matter who is prez. I think some people think the prez rules congress, but its the opposite. You should all go kiss your kids goodnight and be thankful we won WW 11. It's gonna be alright.

If you want to fully understand how much the Iranian theocratic political system hates us as Americans and Western Europe in general, go see the Movie "Argo". I was a very young US Airman in November 1979 and remember pretty clearly those events which led us to this point in history. At my first technical in Denver (1978-79) there were even Iranian Airman going to school for F-4 avionics maintenance who we were clearly told to avoid and stay away from. One of the American Airmen who died in Operation Eagle Claw in April 1980 was from my home town. Needless to say I've been watching events unfold in Iran for a long time now. I hate to say but sooner or later we might come to blows with Iran unless cooler heads in their nation prevail. As one who has been to war to many times in my military career I really hope not, but......It's really up to them and the ball is in their court!! God help us all!!

A little add on If you think it was bad during the Cold War with the Soviet Union and Russians, you ain't seen nothing yet!! Our differences with the Soviets were mostly political and we were allies with them in WWII against Nazi Germany. The issues with Iran's government are very much religious based philosophy–a whole deeper can of worms!!

In December, 2011 a hi-tech US drone crash landed in Iran. The US asked Iran to return its secret spy plane. Wonder oif the US would claim that such drone was in international airspace if it hadn't landed in Iran. Any claims made by the US military should not be taken as gospel truth now should they!

We would never shoot at a Chinese drone flying along the Texas/Mexican boarder spying on us. Especially if China was ratcheting up war-rhetoric about 'bombing one of our nuclear facilities!' No. Never. We're the victim here. We would never call China a provocateur for traveling half way across the planet (beyond it's borders) just to fly spy planes along the Texas/Mexican boarder. No one wants war. However, the world is not a perfect place. Complacency is not an option.

Our ideals do not let us abandon our fellow man. Our gallant sacrifices have always defended freedom and democracy.

We have evolved to this great state through mass cooperation.

Heaven help us if we must, with determination and resolve.

No one wants war but remember "give me freedom or give me death".

When we have no choice, it isn't an arbitrary or glamorous. It is the people who elect those to represent their best interests that defend our freedoms and fellow man.

get your facts straight. if it was a fighter jet like the article claims, the drone would have been destroyed.
su-25 are ground attach close air support bombers. they are not fighter jets and are not designed for air superiority or any other kind of air combat roles. it doesn't even have an air-to-air radar. it can only engage airborne targets visually with its guns or infra-red homing missiles that are almost never carried.

So tell us genius, how exactly did P-51s or F-86s shoot down other aircraft? I don't think these vintage aircraft had anymore sophisticated aiming equipment for their .50 cal cannons than the Frogfoot's 30mm. The reason why this MQ-1 wasn't shot down was pilot skill at engaging airborne targets, not the lack of Su-25 capes by itself. A-10 pilots regularly get engaged by Aggressor F-16s at Red Flag are able to successfully engage them with their 30mm if the 16s get close enough.

su-25 has as much air to air capability as a soldier with a shoulder fired infrared missile. except these infrared missiles are almost never carried by su-25 that don't even have an air-to-air radar. they likely used cannons. cannons carry 250 rounds of ammo. cannon fires at 3000 rounds per minute. that is 5 seconds of firing. could you shoot down a moving drone from a moving plane that is not designed to engage air targets in 5 seconds? i doubt anyone can.

Obama is doing the right thing by not getting riled up, even if they shot it down its cheaper to keep building them than start a war. We could even pay Iran to protect our ships and its cheaper than war.

Lebanon was carved out Greater Syria to protect the Christians. Palestine was carved out of Greater Syria. The non-Muslins of both states came under decades of attacks, and Israel was carved out of Palestine to protect the Jews. The problem in the region is not the non-Muslims. It's how they are treated by militant Islam, and excuses the West finds for these violent mystics from an earlier age.

"The incident, reported first by CNN, raised fresh concerns within the Obama administration about Iranian military aggression in crucial Gulf oil shipping lanes."

Yes. The drone was apparently a symbol of peace, harmony and love from the peace-loving US. This is why flying drones in International air space will never be considered an act of aggression. Unless, of course, some evil force try to shoot down these symbols of love and hope! Then, and only then, will such acts be called acts of aggressions.

So why does the last line of this article quote the israeli ambassador stating that "he didn't know if his country knew about this incident before the Pentagon did ?? Really stupid comment – as the recon drone was sending intel back to the US military. Why does this a smack of possible israeli propaganda and provocation – just in time for the US Prez Election ??? We need to watch both the israelis and the Iranians – one is just as goofy as the other !!!!!

A subsonic drone has an aerial show put on by supersonic Iranian fighters. They do loops and rolls and fire their cool looking canons, all the while knowing we are watching it live. Got to love it, and now for political reasons we are calling it a possible act war of war and wondering if the Israelis knew... This just screams propaganda.

How can we cry about Iran shooting at our poor unmanned drone when it's just outside their airspace when we also routinely fly drones DIRECTLY OVER. After we break all the rules, we’ve got no right to cry. If we had any respect for the rule of law, our brave drones would not be constantly scoffing at the world community.

On a daily basis our drones invade the sovereignty of any small country that resists American interests while bravely avoiding countries like China, Russia, or the dozen oppressive regimes we prop up, such as Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. Our drone and cyber wars have never been authorized by the people. In the old days, our acts of war used involve accountability.

A large number of posters need reminding that on 3 July 1988, the United States Navy guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes (CG-49)shot down Iran Air Flight 655 – a civilian jet airliner – as it flew over the Strait of Hormuz at the end of the Iran–Iraq War. The aircraft, was flying in Iranian airspace over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf on its usual flight path, iAll 290 onboard including 66 children and 16 crew perished. The Vincennes had entered Iranian territorial waters after one of its helicopters drew warning fire from Iranian speedboats operating within Iranian territorial limits.

To add insult to injury, the crew of the Vincennes were given a heroes welcome in their return home.

U.S. military intelligence analysts are still not sure if the Iranian pilots simply were unable to hit the drone due to lack of combat skill, or whether they deliberately were missing and had no intention of bringing it down.
But as one of the officials said, "it doesn't matter, they fired on us." Pentagon Press Secretary George Little stopped short of calling the incident an act of war although the Pentagon was concerned.

One has to compare the US response to this minor incident, in which no one and nothing got damaged. to the Israel attack on a US ship )the USS Liberty) in international waters in 1967..Unmarked Israeli fighter jets bombed the USS Liberty to destroy its antennae then sent gunboats to torpedo the ship to sink it. When the captain ordered the lifeboats afloat preparatory to abandoning ship, the Israelis moved closer and machine-gunned the inflatable rubber rafts, rendering them incapable of saving the lives of the American sailors.

Incredibly this undeclared act of war and aggression continues to be rewarded with billions of dollars in aid to Israel from the US. What hold does Isreal have over the US that prevents punitive measures being taken against it?

This was just a message and a test of our reaction/capabilities. Just like during the cold war when the pilots on each side would pull up alongside each other and flip the bird. They could have shot it down if they wanted to. There is a cannon mounted under the nose, laser guidance for the munitions, and four pods holding 20 rockets each plus two more for fuel tanks or bombs. And the wake turbulance from flying in front of it could have brought it down. We'll hear the rest of the story in a few months, or via wikileaks. I like how the story about the other drone was that they landed it with minimal damage, now it's that they built a model of it to display. I don't believe a word either side says.

"U.S. military intelligence analysts are still not sure if the Iranian pilots simply were unable to hit the drone due to lack of combat skill, or whether they deliberately were missing and had no intention of bringing it down."

Drone was flying in international waters, however was too close to the border, so Iranians just gave a signal by intentionally missing it. Moreover speed of their aircraft SU-25 max at 590 mph exceeds speed of drone significantly max at 135 MPH). They were doing multiple circles. If drone was in their legitimate air space then they would've shot it down. Hitting drone in international air space would've caused a big trouble for them. Iranians may be stupid, but they are not THAT stupid.

I don't have any liking for Iran or Pakistan due to their brand of militant and extremist Islam. But having said that, I still think that the USA s a big bully for not respecting other countries' sovereignity by blatantly sending its drones and planes to spy on the countries and violating their airspace.

In this case, if the article is correct, then the drone was not in Iranian air but international air space. Much like the russian sub that was off the east coast a while back. Close but not in our jurisdiction.

So how would the US feel if Iran flew drones 12 miles off the coast of NYC? Come on people it's time to start treating others with the respect that we'd like to receive from them.

Oh my! The Pentagon has it's panties all in a bunch because two Soviet Cold War era Iranian jets allegedly fired on a US Drone, when at the very same time the US has launched over 200+ Drone-Platform originated airstrikes inside of Pakistan and killing mostly civilians. Please pardon me while I go shed some crocodile tears for Fort Fumble on The Potamac River who still thinks Bush is in the White House and has Generals with a Dr Strangelove Complex.

Why send such provocation across the globe when we ourselves cannot accept similar provocation? The administrations priorities are all over the place. Instead of securing our borders it is more interested in playing killing games in other countries and in the process it will create more terrorists who will come back to haunt us.

I recently had a discussion regarding Bengahzi with a Limaugh disciple who was pretty riled up. After he got over the initial obligatory name calling he was presenting some decent talking points until he actually said. "We had drones in the air capable of guiding Hellfire missles from 20 miles out." This was actually the end of his battle plan. I waited for more but none came. I pointed out that missiles were a very poor choice of hardware for a rescue mission. Primarily being that they are one-way only and after that if they don't kill everyone within two blocks they will certainly defen them or create all kinds of unpredicable mayhem. The only rescue missions I've ever heard going successfully in Libya required Airwolf. (Factoid: Airwold was successfully used for Libyan rescue in Season 1 "Shadow of Hawk Part 2" and the 1984 straight to TV movie Airwolf.). One of the primary problems with Libya is that its a a very big desert, and once you get to a city, the citizens tend to have rocket launchers. It's a Libyan cliche but true. This actually begged the question as to what exactly anyone could have done to recue people from a non-fortified recently aquired building surrounded by hostile neighbors without risking the lives of far more people than were already on the ground. (Factoid: There doesn't appear to be any public history on the origins of the Benghazi consulat or any US building in Libya other than the offical Embassy which was established in 2006.). As rediculous as it sounds, I believe it would take at least several mach two attack helicopters.

      Or an AC-130 http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Peace/2012/10/27/U-S-Had-Two-Drones-AC-130-Gunship-and-Targets-Painted-In-Benghazi-But-Obama-Didn-t-Pull-The-Trigger
We don't know the real story but I have read that there were resources available. The attack supposedly lasted 7-8 hours. If that is true we left those Americans to die. If it is a matter of we messed up and made a bad call own up to it, apologize and move on but to try and cover it up is disgraceful.

Oh course it's a well known fact that all diplomats overseas swallow an IFF pill so that AC-130 gunships can identify them as friend or foe in the dark in the middle of a riot/assault. Then they can fire thousands of rounds of IFF bullets that will miss only the good guys, while the predator hellfire missile will only send those who truly deserve it to hell and somehow not kill those friendlies in the buildings they flatten. And of course this president who's carried out more drone strikes killing more taliban and terrorist leaders then the previous admin....this time.....this time...said no.

They declined to be identified because of sensitive intelligence matters surrounding the matter." If these guys did not "leak" the news to CNN, we would never know.
I expect more info will be leaked out re Benghazigate. The truth will come out. i also expect harry reid and his senate will not want to do anything about it.

To those claiming that CNN or the MSM sat on this until after the election to protect Obama, be sure to carefully read the first sentence "...the Pentagon disclosed on Thursday". So it appears that CNN and the MSM published the data as soon as the Pentagon released it.

But when the US's ally Isreal attacked a Turkish ship in International waters killing nine Palestinian activists, why didn't the US declare the incident "an act of war"?

Aha! Maybe because Turkey is a member of NATO and an attack on one member is considered an attack on them all? Then the US might have to condemn Isreal.

One can imagine the US troops charging into battle shouting: "Remember the USS Liberty"
