FIRST ON CNN: Iranian jets fire on U.S. drone

By Barbara Starr

Two Iranian Su-25 fighter jets fired on an unarmed U.S. Air Force Predator drone in the Persian Gulf on November 1, the Pentagon disclosed on Thursday.

The incident, reported first by CNN, raised fresh concerns within the Obama administration about Iranian military aggression in crucial Gulf oil shipping lanes.

The drone was on routine maritime surveillance in international airspace east of Kuwait, 16 miles off the coast of Iran, U.S. officials said. The Predator was not hit.

Also: U.S. adds to Iran sanctions

"Our aircraft was never in Iranian airspace. It was always flying in international air space. The recognized limit is 12 nautical miles off the coast and we never entered the 12 nautical mile limit," Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said in responding to questions from reporters after CNN reported the incident.

Little said the United States believed this was the first time an unmanned aircraft was shot at by the Iranians in international waters over the Gulf.  In December of 2011, a U.S. surveillance drone crashed in eastern Iran.  Iranians claimed to have shot it down, and created a toy model of the drone to celebrate its capture.

Little stopped short of calling the incident an act of war although the Pentagon was concerned.

Also: Obama faces world of challenges in second terms

Two U.S. officials explained the jets were part of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps force, which has been more confrontational than regular Iranian military forces.

At least two bursts of gunfire came from the Su-25s' cannons. The drone started to move away but the Iranian aircraft chased it, doing aerial loops around it before breaking away and returning to Iran.

The Obama administration did not disclose the incident before the presidential election, but three senior officials confirmed the details to CNN on Thursday.  They declined to be identified because of sensitive intelligence matters surrounding the matter.

The drone's still and video cameras captured the incident showing two Su-25s approaching the Predator and firing onboard guns.

The Iranian pilots continued to fire shots that went beneath the Predator but were never successful in hitting it, according to the officials.

U.S. military intelligence analysts are still not sure if the Iranian pilots simply were unable to hit the drone due to lack of combat skill, or whether they deliberately were missing and had no intention of bringing it down.

But as one of the officials said, "it doesn't matter, they fired on us."

Little said the United States has to assume Iran was trying to bring down the Predator.

The United States protested the incident but had not heard back from Iran.

Iran has, at other times, been confrontational in the region.  In January, the U.S. military and coast guard had close encounters with Iranian Navy vessels which approached at high speeds and exhibited provocative behavior.

Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador to the United States, declined to say whether his country knew about the incident before Pentagon officials

This is an act of war. Let's see if Obama will do anything about it. Or if he is just a paper tiger.

Why wasn't this reported BEFORE the election?
        .
Or would it have conflicted with Obama's "I have Iran totally under control" theme?

So when Israel shot up the US spy ship Liberty back in the 60's killing 34 US servicemen, was that an act of war?

You wouldn't want the American people to have all the facts prior to the election. It's even tough to get the Left leaning press to report the facts that ARE known if they aren't favorable to Mr. Obama.

I see going down the amount of taxes given to the coffers because no one can get a job or have given up. How long before the wealthy leave or move their headquarters to another country? I will tell you not long. Maybe it is time for the wealthy liberals to put up or shut up. They will gladly take mine but when it comes to theirs that is a different story. If Liberals wanted be "fair" to everyone, they wouldn't be wealthy they would have already done it because it was right. They won't do it unless it is law.

I will no longer use his name as he is as if dead because of his high crimes and misdemeanors that go unpunished. This mentality is part of the problem. Should the federal government help when it can, sure. More importantly, individual American citizens should be better prepared for disasters and work together locally to help each other out. That's what American citizens did in the past when self-reliance was more rooted in our society. We need to pray and send help now to all Hurricane Sandy victims. We must also learn from this situation. YOU CANNOT DEPEND ON THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

Interesting how this comes out AFTER the election. We have a weak leader as POTUS and this poor excuse of a president will be in office another 4 years. America is in DANGER from within and from outside. Unfortunately the only way half of Americans who voted for Obama will wake up is when there's even more MISERY. Perhaps then we will be united as a country. To my fellow American patriots who are awake and did not vote for this fraud of a president prepare for bad times, diversify your money into hard assets, join forces with like-minded patriots, and starve the federal government by legally minimizing your tax exposure like starting a home based business. God bless.

I am advocating for LEGALLY minimizing taxes paid to the federal government in order to fight the overspending that is taking place. As for Greece, Italy, Spain, and any other Socialist leaning country the majority of their financial problems did not come from people paying LESS taxes. On the contrary, taxes are much higher in Socialist leaning countries. The problem is overspending. As stated before, pick up a history book or an economics book and tell me how Socialism has worked. Don't respond if all you have in you are insults.

I agree... Obama should've taken a stronger stance against natural disasters. Now that Obama's in charge for another 4 more years, there will no doubt be countless more hurricanes and earthquakes and what-not! Read my lips... no more disasters!

*sigh* but seriously... what's your point? That FEMA is still a bureaucratic nightmare? That, being a federal agency, it's still horribly inefficient? I don't think Obama, or any president, is going to fix that anytime soon. There's a lot more wrong with FEMA than right.

The reason we're just now hearing about Iran firing on an American drone is not because of Obama's incompetence. It's because CNN didn't want to say anything about it until after the election.

Unbelievable. So Iran fires on us on November 1st, and we find out about now on November 8th.
      I'm curious. Why the delay?
Is it because the government hid it from us? Gee we should kind of know about these things when they happen. Might affect an election.
Is it because the media sat on it to protect Obama? Wouldnt surprise given the fact that CBS interview with Obama about Benghazi was parceled out in drips and drops for 2 months. They hid details from that interview that clearly made Obama seem like he was hiding the truth.
I have no faith in this President, nor in the media that is so biased in his favor and that it would forfeited its journalistic integrity.

Really? There was a pentagon briefing, and it was reported on CNN, both of which are in Obama's pocket. Meanwhile, Obama is trying to tell us that all is right with the world. Why would they lie about this? Plus, they didn't disclose this information until today, a week later, after Obama lied his way into office again. What part of that don't you believe?

Hilarious. That's all CNN has to say about it? The Obama administration didn't report this because it was right before the election? You freaking hacks. Does that not say it all about not only the media, but this administration and their withholding of information here, Benghazi and probably lots of other areas. Reminds me of Yahoo news too. They are now spouting off about how Social Security is unsustainable. Really? Now you decide to get in the game rather than covering for Obama? After the election? Iran wouldn't even be an issue if that gutless Jimmy Carter would have moved in with force during the Hostage crisis. Weakness in the Middle East is met with contempt. Although the drone was not hit, the Pentagon is concerned.

Two U.S. officials explained the jets were part of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps force, which has been more confrontational than regular Iranian military forces.

The Obama administration did not disclose the incident, which occurred just days before the presidential election on November 1, but three senior officials confirmed the details to CNN.

How utterly convenient not to announce this before the election. Just another example of the "transparency" of the Obama administration. And now, back to Libya...

And every single President we have had since Washington has been totally, completely, 100% transparent, open and honest with this country. Every Pres since Washington has ALWAYS told the American people every little detail of every event that has occured in our history. And I would defy you to tell me one Pres that has not done that.

Bob, this was a matter of national security so it didn't necessarily need to be mentioned. The problem with Obama is how he selectively uses the military to his advantage. Does it not bother you that he flatly lied to the American people and the World about Libya? He could have simply stated that we suffered a tragedy and it was being investigated. He instead made up a ridiculous lie and he and his representatives told it repeatedly for two weeks. I have never been so disappointed in my country as I am right now. And by the way, your snide remarks are typical of your kind.

This is not "aggression". We violated their airspace with the drone, we accept the risk it might be fired on. We would do the same exact thing if any other country did this to us. We do not have a universal right to ignore the sovereignty of other nations just because it suits us.

You need to understand that of course they said that, anything but that is an admission of illegal invasion. Remember that other secret stealth drone that just crashed in Iran a couple months ago????

WE HAVE BEEN ATTACKING IRAN FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS. Terror attacks have been blowing up their scientists numerous times. We have been attacking their airspace for months and months. They are doing EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN to not fight us, but all we do is provoke and provoke and provoke. Just look at the history of this Iran situation for 10 minutes, please!!!!

Also btw, understand that i am a big time football loving, gun shooting, Texan. So don't come at me with Obama communist hippie stuff.

        November 8, 2012 at 2:49 pm |
    • Lee-Anne

So you "know" they violated their airspace? Pretty sure the article states the drone was in international airspace. That would make it aggression. Where did you read they violated Iranian airspace in the article.

      November 8, 2012 at 2:31 pm | Reply

Jesse, the part of "international airspace" we didn't get is how the US claims to have a 200 mile buffer when it's US airspace but when it's within 200 miles of another country it's "international." The other part is hot pursuit. If we were spying on Iran over their land earlier, they are allowed to pursue the drone into international waters of any distance and shoot it down. Maybe, just maybe, we are trying to provoke Iran? Or perhaps we just find it convenient to play with our toys off the coast of an enemy half a planet away, yeah.

      November 8, 2012 at 2:36 pm | Reply
  68. Dude

The gulf area is very small. When they international airspace or water, you get the impression the drone was in a wide opern air space. In realty, these countries are very close. So, It is like flying a few miles off the cost of a US city. A drone flying that close with leathal missle can swing in a second and take out target deep into their country. Anyway, it is expected they would do that and it is likley a warning shot, and the US was just testing their radar and air rediness.

    • ALM

Dude...you're an idiot. No UAV is gonna "swing over in a second" and go anywhere fast. And they don't carry anything lethal enough to take out a city.

Realize there are actual issues at hand.

Anytime I hear the term "left-wing" anything it sort of invalidates your opinion because I know you're just a Fox News drone. You know what liberals do with our most radical "left-wing" people? We IGNORE them because they're crazy. Trees don't have inalienable rights, and we aren't switching to veganism. What does the conservative movement do with it's most radical supporters? They shove them on a network TV and radio shows and swallow their dribble like it's the word of God himself. It doesn't matter to me because the GOP will continue to alienate normal intelligent people with it's utter nonsense and won't gain much of a foothold in a rapidly changing society. If this last election didn't convince anyone then just stay tuned.

Obama doesn't get credit for killing any bad guys. There is no president that, when presented with intelligence confirming BIN (at least spell his name right idiot) Laden's location and the chance to take him out, wouldn't have given the go ahead. Great for USA, but Obama was just lucky to be in office to take all the credit for it. I like how you "know" Bush knew about Bin Laden's whereabouts for 2-3 years, I'd like to see the citing of your infallible sources.

Because for 2-3 years we were following bin Laden's couriers, tapping his communiques and using that info to hurt the Taliban. Obama couldn't allow that to happen anymore (his muslims brothers were getting upset about it) so they let us send in choppers to kill him. The Pu$$ is the one who will now sit idly by and let more of our people and assets in the region be destroyed without doing anything about it. Scott, it is not that you are ignorant, it is that what you know is just not true! Or, yes, maybe you could just be an idiot.

They way Bin Laden was taken out was due to policies and procedures GW Bush put in to place YEARS BEFORE PRESIDENT O-HOLE WAS EVEN ELECTED YOU HALF-WIT!!!.

No wonder Obama was reelected with people like you voting for him. Let me make a long shot guess here...you get your money, your paycheck or source of income ....from government right? You are either a government worker or some sort, a student with a government loan, somehow "disabled", an unemployed liberal arts major, a unionized worker in a dying industry, a teacher (most likely), or just a leech off of the taxpayer.

Well Scott, did I nail it?

Anyway, dead wrong Scott, just absolutely dead wrong. All Obama did was to say "yes" to a no brainer situation that evolved while he was still a POS Communist Senator from Illinois. TD01

From the VA each month, for the 3 pieces of shrapnelI still have in my body I got in Vietnam, and the VA sends me my pain meds to help take away some of the pain from that I have lived with every day since 1970. Don't worry Matt;, the election is over and the OWS can join Cindy Sheehan and Code Pink in the scap heap of uneccesary political memorability. You won't have to leave your parents' basement and take the time to go poop on the White House lawn now.

That's probably right. We admitted after Vietnam that most of the attacks on US ships in "international waters" took place after the ships got done shelling villages on the Vietnamese shore and then raced back to int'l waters to make defensive pursuit by North Vietnamese patrol boats look like a provocation.
