The U.S. Navy detected and tracked a Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine less than 300 miles from the southern U.S. East Coast last month, according to U.S. defense officials.
While the submarine did not enter U.S. territorial waters or follow any U.S. Navy ships, its arrival came while a Navy carrier strike group was training off Florida, according to defense officials who could not speak publicly because of the sensitivity of the issue.
The move by the Russians to put the ship close to the U.S. demonstrates its desire to ramp up deep-water patrolling by its submarine fleet - something the Russian government has said it would do, officials said.
The newer Sierra-2 submarine is thought to be part of the Russian Northern Fleet, and this is the first time this class of sub has been detected this close to the U.S., the officials said.
The sub was discovered about 275 miles off the southern East Coast in international waters about two weeks ago and has been followed by the Navy since, defense officials said. Officials said the sub did not come close to the major U.S. Navy submarine base at Kings Bay, Georgia, home to attack and ballistic missile submarines.
"Things worked the way they were supposed to," according to one of the officials when referencing how the Navy discovered the submarine.
While the officials would not disclose how the submarine was detected, the Navy has sensors in the air and water to detect and track such vessels.
The submarine has since turned back, and on Tuesday, it was about 600 miles off the U.S. coast heading eastward toward Europe, according to Navy officials.
It is not clear what the submarine was doing this close to the U.S., but officials say they assume it was conducting anti-submarine exercises, a return to a Cold War activity.
"They are doing what the U.S. does, patrolling and conducting exercises," one of the officials told Security Clearance.
The detection of the sub was first reported in the Washington Free Beacon.
The Sierra-2 is similar to the U.S. Los Angeles-class attack submarine and does not carry ballistic missiles - only torpedoes and other anti-submarine weapons.
The last time a Russian sub was detected close to the United States was in 2009, according to defense officials.
It's quite strange. The two on the right do resemble Yankee class subs but the Northern Fleet didn't have Yankees. So I'm wondering where that picture was taken and perhaps when.
You are correct – YANKEE Class. Nice picture – but it is 25+ years old and it is not taken at Severomorsk. Kind of makes you wonder how accurate the rest of the article is.
I would be worried too because, as everyone knows, terrorists managed to get 3 (YES 3!!) airplanes through the United States defensive system destroying their WTC's and the Pentagon. If there is a Russian sub off of the coast of the US, they would probably be able to fire off about 100 nukes and 50 of them would strike the US before the American Gov't even noticed as evidenced by their reaction time on 9/11. The US isn't as powerful as they would have you believe otherwise 3 (YES 3!!) planes wouldn't have made it through, none of them would have.
Do you mean missiles or warheads? Because subs typically have 8-12 missiles. Also, Russia has been testing US response time on both coasts since the 60s. We do the same to them. Also, the WTC 3 plane comment is ridiculous. They were hijacked airliners that were, at least until the last second, traveling towards their destination... Its not like Russia put bombers over Alaska...
whoah dude. you sound very uneducated. please just stop. Unless you are trolling, but either way I suppose, your comment is laughable.
Mike, you missed the main armament of Russian Navy Sierra-2, SSN ;), the modified RK-55 Granat (NATO: SS-N-21 ‘Sampson’) cruise missile with a 200-kT nuclear warhead.
Sayan.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_class_submarine
not just anti sub as SayanIndia said
but dont worry cut the navys budget on new subs and surface ships
...and it will still be twice as large as the 2nd largest NAVY budget in the world.
There was a movie in the 60's about a Russian sub running aground in shallow water off the East coast. didn't get to see all of it but it had some humor to it. Alan Arkin was the commander that came a shore with a few of the sailors and another guy I remember seeing in a movie about the Red Baron... tall blond haired guy.... Maybe someon can name it for me. 🙂
Harrison Ford?
Sayan.
The Russians are Coming the Russians are Coming
Some humor in it? It was a comedy through and through
Few comedy movies have traveled well over time, but "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming" is a notable exception to that. It's still hilarious from start to finish.
OMG A RUSSIAN SUB OFFSHORE, CALL OUT THE NAVY ! Oh we already did. Oh, we were watching it from the time it left Muramask Russia. Wow, they could get a sub as far as 300 miles from USA without braking down more than once ? Oh, it did brake down more than once.
I'm sure you meant 'break' not 'brake'. I realize that by pointing out this grammatical error, it fractures the power of the point you were hoping to make.
Bother
The last statement about the last sub being detected is false. There was an Akula that was undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for over a month just recently. You really need to keep up on this.

Emergency, emergency, everybody to get from street!
Please quote correctly: Egermency, egermency! Everyone please to get off street! And, by the way, the setting was a northwest coast small coastal town.
No, these are Yankees.
Deltas have a much more pronounced hump on the back, about one-half of the height of sail.
sorry bro all yankees are decommissioned or sitting on the bottom
well it could be a old pic or a pic of a ship graveyard i agree tho it is not a Sierra-2 class sub pictured
those are not subs, it's obama poop.
Thank you, Phunnie boy for not usurping my name. The above was very funny indeed. Moreover, don't let this article scare you as the right-wing thugs in Washington along with the right-wing news media want it to!!!
Gee whiz #1RedNeck, did you have to spoil my state of euphoria over my reelection by posting the above? Now that I've read it, my feelings are hurt. At any rate, I'm going to go on killing Muslims whether you, the Russians or anybody else likes it or not!
your communiest leader invited my sub's over, get use to it you fools.
Big f ing deal.I am so afraid.Should I vote for war so I can relax? What should we do ,what should we do! said chicken little. This is NOT news.
That is why it is listed on security.BLOGS.cnn.com.
Welcome, Russian Navy!
They came to collect on Obama's flexibility promise to Putin.
How do you say Forward in Russian?
Those comments quoting Wikipedia always give me a chuckle. Funny to think people would actually believe what teenagers, sitting in their parents basement, write on that website. Got to love it : )
Someone's military budget must be getting low so they rung up CNN with this news flash.
From the comments that I have read, IF the actual subs in the picture were in fact on a patrol off of the US coast that would be news, although the headline might have to use the phase "Ghost Ship" and have been released on Halloween.
It is hard to conclude whether this CNN article has anything to do with reality, or just a piece of 100% made up news, but it is definitely the case that the photograph has no relevance whatsoever: neither to the story, nor to the reality.
"Those are actually underwater boats you retards" – Obama
Sandy probably blowed them off course or they intended on defacating to the US.
Defacating to the US- man what's in their chow line..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_waters this is not a big deal or illegal.. it is in international waters.. there is nothing wrong with this.. and Russia is technically our allie ..
They were looking for signs of actual human intelligence emanating from the southern US and failed to detect any.
Now that's funny.
This must be part of that "new flexibility" President Obama promised and whispered into the Russian president's ear that is now possible AFTER the election.
Hey Bob,
The election's over. Your man said in his concession speech that this is not the time for partisan bickering. Or didn't you listen to him?
I agree, and sadly so do many many people. Guys listen, please. I have never gotten involved in any type of political debates or conversations, but something is terribly wrong here. It does not take a genius to figure this out. Why are we allowing our country to be defeated abroad? Why are we decreasing our weapons? Our military? I have been doing my own research and the only time in history this stuff happens is when an all out war is around the corner. All anyone has to do is look into this. What exactly happened in Benghazi? Why were the military told to stand down and why were our own killed trying to protect? Why were the pleas of the families not given time on all of these news stations. I promise you if it was Bush, Clinton,Reagan , or anyone else they would have been publicly destroyed. What in the heck is going on? I am open to explanations, so please explain. I am not versed in laws, but why does it seem like our freedoms and rights are slowly being dissolved? The right to bear arms , because there are more law abiding citizens than there are nut jobs. How about the right to choose healthcare. What about this "transparency," thing that was so talked about out. Please I can go on, someone explain.
decreasing our weapons is getting rid of the unnecessary clutter. one super weapon will replace 10 weapons, 1 ATM replaces 10 back tellers, 1 wife replaces 10 gold diggers,1 sane human replaces 10 tea party idiots. Your research is flawed. look to your own life as an anology to the one thing that has replaced your own clutter. if you cannot find anything then you are a walking zombie and you should stay out of political debates
I have to agree. The utopian award of Nobel Peace Prizes has a pattern of presaging massive destruction.
while we are also on the topics of our rights. As a result of our democracy and our right to vote. the majority of people voted in last night's election for the legalization of marijuana in two States. Brother you need to go get you some BADLY
Do you own guns? are they in your house? is anyone taking them away? Go check, I'll wait...... no? ok then maybe the "threat" to the 2nd amendment is just that, and ask yourself where that "threat" actually comes from. then think about how hard it would be to remove all the firearms from citizens like you and me. How would that go over? and could they even afford to send someone to politely ask, everyone, to give up their guns... Next, did you choose your healthcare provider? if no, then who did that for you? You may want to ask your boss why he's making those kinds of decisions for you, then listen as he explains the beautiful land that employer provided health insurance. If you chose your health care provider yourself, then what is the problem? Much of what you, me and the rest of us have been led to believe is really fear mongering designed to control us by making us jump at ghost, we worry about problems we dont full understand, and are not even there, so that we dont notice what is really going on.
beware. the singularity is near, and nothing will be the same after it comes.
The next 4 years will be really tough for you my friend. After President Obama's re-election, I suppose someone needs to talk you off the ledge, but I don't think there's anyone left who cares. He won. The majority voted for him. Get over it. Put your tinfoil hat away and join the rest of us in reality. It's tough love time.
The military is being decreased because the right, although they love the military, refuse to raise taxes to pay for it.
How old is this photograph? These three subs are of 667A type (known otherwise as "Yankee" class). All off them were decommissioned and cut into pieces at least 20 yeas ago.
Great observation and detain into the demise of the yankee. One small point, the sub closest to the land is a different class sub. Look closely and you will notice the lack of the hump. Otherwise great post!!
There were several variants of Yankees. All of were decommissioned as ballistic missile carriers under START 1 Treaty back in the beginning of 199x.
The one closer to the shore (with its back almost flat) is most likely K-420, see
http://www.deepstorm.ru/DeepStorm.files/45-92/nsrs/667m/k420/k420.htm
carrying cruise-missiles instead of ballistic.
The one you see in foreground is 667AT called "Yankee notch" - a torpedo attack conversion where ballistic missiles section was kept (hence the distinctive hump), in internally all ballistic missile tubes removed and replaced with torpedoes.
...anyway, all of them are gone for already 20 years now. I do not know what motivates CNN brings this photo now. Perhaps to scary American People after elections.
You mean 'Delta ' class right!?!?!?
No, hammer91. Deltas have a much larger hump reaching half of the height of their sail, and overall they are much larger as well - approximately twice the displacement. These are Yankees.
We should of blasted the thing out of the water with a couple depth charges.
With all due respect, General, depth charges aren't designed to physically blow the submarine out of the water. If you want to get the sub out of the water, I recommend a dry-dock.
apparently during Cuban crisis blockade one Soviet sub was surrounded by the US Navy and the dept charges were used to sort of scare them out to surface, was something like 3 low power charges supposed to be a code for a sub that it's detected and better come up
They just wanted to go to Disneyland and the GPS got confused.
They must have been using the new Apple maps on IOS 6.
If they had used apples mapping app they would have gone overland!!
Greatest comment ever Android!
Of course, us steaming our subs into the Black Sea should be of NO concern
"Excuse me sir, can you direct us to the naval base in Alameda? It's where they keep the nuclear wessels."
Love it! First line I thought of when I read the article!
Well i hope all you people who voted for Obama are ready to speak Chinese and Russian..
Character is defined by the grace shown when one loses.
Get over it all ready...America has spoken. You can't alienate Latinos, women, young voters, the LGBT community, the lower and middle-classes and animal lovers (dog riding on top of car in carrier) and hope to win an election that governs them. You can't be bigots and push religious beliefs on a country built on the premise that all Americans have the freedom to practice or not practice any faith they want to. You can't tear down your multi-million dollars home and build another multi-million dollar home and hope to convince America that you relate to them. The GOP needs to learn from this and loosen up to understand the dynamic that is America today. Let's not even bring up he could not convince America he was right for the job when he couldn't or wouldn't show any concrete plans or strategies or the fact that he switched his stance so many times one could get dizzy trying to keep up with him.
You write like one of those who calls a 50% to 48% vote a "a clear voter mandate."
One hopes Obama has learned something.
Sandy, I'm willing to acknowledge that Mitt has shifted on certain stances. Can you (liberals) do the same for your candidate? Didn't think so, even though his shifts and distortions exist in plenty. You think that Mitt wasn't specific and detailed in his vision and plans for America? Well, I don't recall hearing/seeing much details from the President. Romney is a decent man who was vilified with attack/negative ads at an 80% clip. Sad day in American politics that a campagne felt the need to stoop so low in order to be victorious. No sour grapes here, just amazed and saddened at the disparity.
Spud,
I'm amazed and saddened that so many wealthy people felt no compunctions about trying to bankroll an Obama defeat, as well as other key Democrat races. Maybe that's the most important lesson in this election, that a majority of the American voters don't approve of that kind of campaign.
As for the narrowness of the victory, may I remind one and all that if Romney HAD won, it would've been equally narrow and that would've been good enough for you.
Bairkus ...
If Romney HAD won, it would've been by an equally narrow margin, and you would've be more than happy about it.
Howard,
Barack and Joe made it abundantly clear in the first weeks of their administration that the Republicans were in the back seat and the Dems were driving. The 50.8% Obamacare vote in the House demonstrated what they meant. For those who noticed that Barack was the most partisan voter in his congress, and brought little ability to lead opposing sides to agreement, it was no surprise that such polarization has since developed. . He's an excellent grass-roots organizer with a powerful grasp of how to move an "Us vs Them" polity.
Haha your comment is hilarious? Animal Lovers? Like Obama who writes in his own books about eating dogs.
Sandy, are you a young, gay, Latino woman who loves dogs by any chance?
When the country goes down in ruins, you can sing the praises of the Chosen One who pandered to every group that contributes the least to society financially and substantively. Watch where that gets us!
Your time is over. Now go back to your room and play nice with the other children
Careful. Your intelligence is showing... or lack thereof.
Weren't Russians in that sub, it was Columbians trying to deliver cocaine to Florida.
That Sub already arrived , adds new meaning to blowing ballast my friend. They are snorting lines a mile long in Washington.
We probably have a game-play or set of rules, just to test our stuff on each other to make sure it still works. Blow the dust off the ol’sonar screens and look for each other’s subs. A fun way to play, ‘Sink The Battleship’. This time, it was Russia’s turn…..it’s probably our turn next week. Got to get those subs out once in a while and blow the rust off the propellers, recharge those power supplies or get those reactors fired up. “We’ll cruise around New York this time, guys….and you can hang out over around St. Petersburg next week….” That's the ticket.
Back in the late '60's and early '70's, I was in a Navy task force that patrolled this area quite extensively. We'd pick up their boomers coming out of Polyarny and track them to our coastal waters. You could almost walk across the Atlantic with the sonar bouys we dropped to detect them. It was all part of a very dangerous game in a maddening theater. Nothing new here. I'm sure we're not very far off their coast either.
So you saw Hunt for Red October too? Your post is taken right out of the script
I'm guessing you've got it backwards. The script is based on actual standard military practice.
You're right, Roger. The tactic was in a movie once, so that must be where it originated. The Navy relies on Hollywood for its military strategy.
Want to bet that we don't regularly visit INSIDE many of their ports, taking pictures?
I was a fast attack sailor during the 70's and I can tell you for a fact we got a lot closer to Russia than 300 miles. You're right, Spyder. SOP. Nothing to see here, move along folks.
why was this even written? there's ALWAYS a Russian sub off the US coast -just as there are ALWAYS US subs in the waters of Russia, China and anywhere else we damn well want to go. its called practice.
everyone's subs not only go close to others shores, we actually go so far as actually entering Russian harbors and literally sneaking up within 100 feet of docked surface ships -because we CAN. our fleet runs so silent we can do that. if anyone but some CNN person who doesnt know squat about simple routine military matters would know, we actually bumped a Russian ship in port a decade or so ago and were barely ably to bug out w/o getting caught.
plus, the Russian sub we detected, we probably knew simply b/c of his sound signature what his sail # was and were tracking him from the second he left his base until he got here. yes-we're that good.
but making war is big business. and the slimy arms mfrs just wanna keep cashing the checks rather than do whats best for this country- cut the defense budget 40% and use SOME of the money to engage in massive infrastructure rebuilding as the Chinese did for the last decade. thats main reason their GDP grew quickly. that and selling Americans cheap plastic crap. we got lots of roads, bridges, schools and *especially* electrical distribution networks (T&D lines and switching stations) that would go a long way to
a) create a TON of US jobs that CANT be exported or destroyed by the Bain Capital types
b) greatly increase GDP b/c the workers will go out and spend their wages HERE not in China and
c) improve our general efficiency reducing commute times, reduce power production needs and reduce gas prices b/c
we'll need to drive less. this means more rail and public transportation projects.
-but this is so NOT news. maybe the warmongers are trying to drum up more ridiculousness so they can all keep pi$$ing away tax money and getting kids sent home in boxes so they can keep paying the mortgage and the country club membership. go write something about THAT.
I'm with you except for the cut derfense spending 40% part; that's a dumb move (which would make you a Democrat, no doubt). Defense spending is largely responsible for the US flourishing over the past 100 years and turning us into a super power ... you're not going to get that sitting at home and hoping nobody tries to invade your borders. As a retired USAF SNCO and current DoD contractor myself, I'd thank you very much not to plan on taking away my livelyhood; a 40% cut would decimate hundreds of thousands of families and leave the US vulnerable. Every Democratic president to date has cut defense spending, and then every Republican has had to fix the mess, it's expected (I'm neither D nor R, by the the way ... both parties way too self-involved and dependent on religious and big money backing). Want to save money? Let's see, according to the news today the two candidates spent more than two BILLION dollars to try and get elected; gee, where could we save money, hmmmmmmmmmmm .....
Propping your sorry @ss up with tax-payers dollars; socialism at its finest.
So you live off the government and tax payers by choice. Others are also dependent to the government, but not by choice. Time to slim down the Industrial Military complex to be more efficient and not guided by Industry – as it has become, but guided by a leaner military and it's realistic and revised needs. A military subject to a more balanced government, one that works for all and not just a puppet to a military biased Industry or Wall Street. Time to share the lean times with others who worked hard for the betterment of our country and its citizens through their jobs that were lost during the recent recession/depression that Obama has brought us through. We all have to grow through this experience and reunite as a people of many different skills, beliefs, dreams, and experiences. We are Americans and we live in a country where we are not subject to the personal religious beliefs of our leaders, nor are we the serfs or servants to the 1%. Science and technology had a little to do with our prosperity and surely that moment of silence after we Americans heard that only two of the Republican candidates, Paul and Huntsman, believed in Science – made some impact on you that YOUR Republican party might be on a path away from prosperity. Surely you realize that science and technology are what define the edge in weaponry as well as underly many aspects of that prosperity you spoke of. Suck it in and suck it up!
Seriously, I did ASW in the Navy out of Jacksonville, Fl and we tracked Soviet subs all the time.
On both sides during the cold war Boomers sat of each others cost 100 to 300 miles. Part of the MAD agreement. Less than 5 min. flight time to any target. An attach boat is not a big deal. Where are the Bommers thats the big question.
Re-read the article. "..first time.."etc. The press has been informed in order to put Russia on notice.
The were planning on defecting but found out Obamma won and decieded that they are better off in Russia!
I think what you meant was that they were hoping that Mitt would win and he could send some jobs their way.
Like I said wait until all the 100's of thousands are unemployed after sequestration and see if you sing the same song then, it will make 2009 look like a picnic
Love the post, you are probably so right, lets see how happy these people are down the road when 100s of thousands of people lose their jobs with the government cutbacks, no homes, no income, and wose then 2009.
And, out of curiosity, which universe are you living in? The economy has been on an improvement since then, slow, but still going up steadily. Have you not seen record highs in the DOW? Guess you weren't paying attention. Or the drop below 8% unemployment? Missed that one, too? No worries. We forgive you. Oh, how about the auto industry being saved? That one missed too?
I hope that rock you live under has heat with winter coming.
Many of us already have lost our jobs. I was a scientist for 39 years! Time to call your representative and tell them to get off their sorry a$$es and start working for the Americans instead of Corporate donors!
Record highs in the DOW huh? Have you checked the news this morning?
Maybe they're defecting.
I came here looking for "In soviet russia" jokes and found nothin'
My grandfather's fallout shelter just fell in, now I guess we'll have to dig it back out.
Think they were looking for a Subway?
Ha! That's not exactly a ringing endorsement of safety when your bomb shelter falls in on itself. If it can't stand a few decades with some earth on it, how is it going to withstand a bombing / nuclear blast / zombie apocalypse?
What's all this fuss about anyway? We have subs patrolling off the Russian coasts at all times so why should we be so upset at their subs being off the coast of New England? Besides, we own both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans with our vastly oversized Navy!!!
We are much better off with a large navy than a small one. It is usually only the insane or desperate that attack the strong. The weak, on the other hand, get attacked by cold calculating enemies unless protected by the strong. Look at history.
What is the big deal? The US official quoted in the story admitted the US military does the same exact thing. And the policy is still Mutually Assured Destruction: The Russians know full well that the US has missiles calculated to pinpoint the Kremlin (or whatever strategic Russian location) at anytime they please, the same technology as they televised dropping those smart weapons in the Iraq war down building chimneys on the news every night.
you think he did a crazy ivan? Captain Ramius is trying to defect and hand over the red october. Although that event never happend.
Nice. Now I have to watch that movie again. Maybe they just want to see Montana.
In an RV!
. . . it's the other 4 of them you don't see that you have to worry about. . .
They were trying to land in Virginia so they could vote for Obama!
I guess they didn't need to after all.
ah eat me!
This isn't news...there's always at least one Russian submarine off our coast!
It sounded like..."Magma Displacement"
Jonesy. The Catapiller drive.
Comrades ! We sail into history......
Comrades ! We sail into history.......
Oooo, scary! A Russian sub in international waters. *yawn*
yawn? I read that Russia has a nuclear Submarine Fleet of 26 actively armed subs. Divided into the fleet there are 384 submarine launched ballistic missiles each having multiple warheads, each capable of destroying 8 or more cities within 15 minutes of launch.
As long as they know (and care) that we can do the same thing to them...
Russia is just testing defense measures by the USA. They were testing Canada's a few months ago when the sent bombers toward Canadian airspace.
I guess now that O'bama got re elected the Russians can open their new sub base next to our sub base in Groton Conn.
Four more years of listening to the constant sniviling and whining of sorry-@ssed losers such as yourself will give me perpetual chubby. Thank you.
now that gave me a good laugh. quite obviously "New Russian Sub Base" prefers to be a "red state" rather than a member of the United States.
For how many decades has been the USA been sending U2 spy planes to overfly the former Soviet Union?
Watching the former Soviet republics with spy satellites?
Listening in on Russian radio transmissions?
Breaking into Russian computer networks?
Tapping into Russian underwater communication cables?
Planting listening devices on the ocean floor to track the movement of Russian submarines?
Using the CIA to recruit Russian informants?
Using the NSA to spy on Russian microwave transmissions?
Sending US submarines to violate Russian sovereignty, "break out" of international waters and clandestinely venture into Russian waters?
And all this continuing even to this day – even though the Soviet Union doesn;t even exist any longer, even though the Wetern Europeans consider Russia to be a friendly neighbor, a country that poses utterly no "threat" to them whatsoever, a country with whom they do billions of dollars' worth of trade and business.
Ohhh, wait, that's right - It's "ALWAYS alright when 'WE' do it, because We Are The Forces Of GOOD And Niceness, while the Russians are STILL The Forces Of Not-Niceness."
"Forces of Not-Niceness" ... hahahahahahahaha
So what if we're doing all the things you list here? Do you think other countries are not doing the same thing to us? It happens all around the world and probably always will. By the way, the fact that the U.S.S.R. has been "dissolved" does not mean Russia is now Mr. Nice Guy. Word on the street is they are like a BFF to Iran, who, if I'm not mistaken, has in the past threatened to destroy Israel. Cute couple, Russia and Iran.
Я надеюсь, что когда-нибудь мы обязательно станем друзьями)
Русский
We can be.
sore looser.
250 miles? How dare them. This is grounds for war! they need to stay in the next PLANET. Now that's far enough. What would President Reagan do?
For some strangelove reason, this looks like a 'demo'. No Russian fleet exercises around it, no context, not even a good excuse for wodka or an epilogue episode of Lost. This looks like someone wants to sell Russian-built nuke subs.
So what? I mean haven't we known for the last 20 years that the US and Russia are still playing the old games? I can't see how this is unusual. Last time it happened was 2009? Do tell...
Who designed those beautiful buildings behind those three subs? The Cold War may be over, but bad Communist architecture moves on. Perhaps these guys in the sub wanted a vacation in Florida? It was either that or back to the concrete barracks!
What makes you think those buildings were built AFTER the fall of communism?
Guys,
Especially NOT just Ahmed. Civilized World yet need to describe what 'Radical Islam' does to the world, and what it did to many poor regions which are islamic by definition. In NY – Islamic communities so far are heavily campaining; including billboards. Thuis is NOT right. Islamic communities worldwide FIRST NEED to PROVE they are PEASEFUL.
Yeah, and oh, btw... those buildings are virtually indistinguishable from many US military barracks and office buildings, which were built by the glorious power of capitalism.
It's a freakin' building, man. If it's government, and it looks opulent and gorgeous, someone has squandered public money. There should be few to NO government buildings that are built to look pretty, because that's money that could have been used elsewhere. I'm not saying make them ugly on purpose, but make them functional, utilitarian even. Also, there's no reason to waste a bunch of money building something if the old building is still useable and safe. Then you're just wasting other people's money TWICE, once to rebuild what already was built and is still fine, and again for hiring architects and designers to make it pretty.
Or do you suppose that common American sailors living and/or working near where the submarines dock are living like they're at the effin' Hyatt? Hmm???
NOT-IVAN-AND-NOT-AHMED
What brought this to the current topic. But anyway, there is no radical islam and non-radical islam. There is only one islam which strongly encourage its follower to be peaceful and develop this earth. Its followers should refrain totally from hurting others (muslims and non-muslims). A the same time there are followers who got extreme in their application and understanding of the religion.
Just try to understand what is islam first then talk and ask. Also, please find authenticated translation of the teachings of islam and refrain from looking at the misleading ones that all over the CNN comments.
Could easily pass for American built crap.
They were designed by one of the cutting edge architects from Ottawa, Canada. Pre-approved for export by the government. They are from the Prozac School of Design. Called "Council approved". YAWN!
I think the old piece of rusty metal was drifted by the water and the waves send it back. No worries.
Of course old rust metal scrub powered by 100 camels rented from Egypt
Exactly the old crab sold by the russians to the middle east in the old ages, Vlad.
Awsome – ok – main point was to do a serious analysis, finally. It will happen soon.
My brother was a flight commander for P3 Orions in the Navy. They would drop buoys to track Russian subs. This was in the 1970's. One day, he died mysteriously by some bacterial agent causing his lungs to fill with blood. I've always believed it was biological warfare on our personnel by the Russians.
Had the Soviets employed a bacterial agent to kill a US serviceman, well, that's an act of war. No way would they risk a war... and how could a sub deliver bacteria to an aircraft anyway?
They aerosolized the bacteria, pumped it through a really really really really really really LONG straw up through the periscope, to where they were flying about 700 feet up, snaked it into the passing plane, right under the nose of the guy in charge of the buoys, then pumped the bacteria up the straw, just in time for a tiny puff of it to come out right when the plane was in position, which also required the sub get lucky enough to be directly under where the plane was dropping the buoys, OR to reposition itself, under dozens or hundreds of feet of water, to where a plane was flying, despite the fact that the plane can go about 20 to 50 times faster than the sub, maybe even more than that. Obviously.
But yeah, it could have happened.
Yeah, 'cause that crap would never happen in the land of the free.
Maybe they want to defect?
We definitely grab the boat, sir!
reverify target with one ping only.
Nothing to write home about really, our subs do the same thing...run drills, recon, etc.
The problem is not a Russian submarine, controlled by Russians.
The problem is a Russian submarine controlled by any one person who can buy it, it should not be difficult
Do not despise anyone under any pretext
HELLO, CNN – Deceptive reporting again! "The Sierra-2 is similar to the U.S. Los Angeles-class attack submarine and does not carry ballistic missiles – only torpedoes and other anti-submarine weapons." Excuse me. "Designed to engage surface task forces and launch cruise missiles at coastal facilities", the Sierra II is the original platform for the SS-N-21 SAMPSON/Novator S-10, which was a 200Mt warhead nuclear cruise missile. Some sources indicate they have been converted to conventional warheads "Tomahawkski". Nuclear or conventional, it doesn't matter; this ISN'T just an ASW/Antiship fast attack sub.
Thank You for your comment
agreed-this is fast attack, not a boomer. the CNN day sleeper and his editor missed it. if it were a boomer that would be at least slightly more newsworthy.
there are 2 main types of subs; one) fast attacks go anywhere and basically defend the shores/harbors etc as well as help protect boomers. kinda like fighter escort aircraft. they have tactical weapons but no ballistic missles.
two) boomers have ballistic missles. they're much bigger, slower, noisier and b/c of the firepower they possess, tend to spend most of their time hiding.
general tactics differ for US and Russia; we go anywhere anytime and keep our boomers as far away from the US as possible so they could never be destroyed in a surprise attack unlike land based nukes. Russians on other hand keep their boomers and most fast attacks close to their two main bases, one near Scandanavia other near Korean peninsula.
but BOTH forces deploy fast attacks all over the world and to practice silent running, as close to the others assets as possible.
interesting fact CNN if you want to write about it- when KAL 007 the Korean airliner was shot down in early 80's, it was flying DIRECTLY OVER that sensitive Russian sub base *and on the same night as a secret small Russian nuke was being test fired from near Iran* with the ground and sub-based assets having ALL their assets on meaning we'd be able to ascertain exactly what their tactics and ELINT sig's were so if we were ever to target them, we'd know how to compromise their air defenses. which makes alot of us think it was alot more a coincidental mistake by the pilot.
want to educate your readers and provide an interesting history lesson thats actually relevant rather than this piece of non-news you cobbled together to meet deadline? go to it.....
Isnt it ironic the US drove the soviet union out of business by working with the saudis to keep ol cheap – ussr collapsed under the weight of their unsustainable social programs coupled with their military spending to keep up with the G.I. Joes – and now that the world is paying the pricestoday per barrel that were negotiated in the 70's and 80's its the US collapsing under the weight of its own too heavy to sustain social programs and continued huge military spending.
What Soviet social programs are you talking about? People of Russia have always been poor as dirt, and the government spent billions on their military and nothing on it's people. Russians live in one room apartments and get a loaf of bread a week to live on. This just shows what happens when you spend all your money on a military you can't afford.
The Soviet Union's biggest problems were ignoring reality and human nature, and having a command economy. A command economy assumes it can best manage who produces what, when, where, and how much of it. Since demand, by definition, is what uses supply, every failure to get it right is resources spent and LOST. It's why capitalism, with its many, MANY faults, (oh yes, it has some,) is STILL a lot better than socialism, in which there is LOTS of wasted time and energy, as well as needless scarcity of things people want and/or need, because the government simply doesn't know enough to have a good grasp of what demand actually is for anything.
If you're having trouble understanding this, imagine a 50 pound dog growing 10 pounds of fur each day. It would have to consume an enormous amount of food to sustain that, since it only really usually needs about a gram of new fur a day, to replace individual hairs as they fall out, to maintain a sufficiently thick coat to protect it from sun, wind, cold, etc.
All that extra fur produced is an example of WASTED energy, which by the way, the dog would have to consume a lot more than the 10 extra pounds worth of food, because of the increased load across the system, increased need for water, and so on. If the dog were going from Miami Florida to Anchorage Alaska, then on that ONE specific day it might make sense to grow 10 pounds of hair in a day, but the majority of the time, it doesn't.
That's the problem with ANY command driven or directed economy. What is produced, and more to the point, what is WASTED when what is unnecessary is produced is what kills economies, and brings down governments.
Russia specifically engaging in a nuclear arms race with the United States was simply an example, they produced fewer consumer products and food than were being demanded, while they produced way more military hardware, including specifically nuclear missiles and bombs, than they ACTUALLY needed.
It's symptomatic of the same disease, common to command economies. Another example is a sprinkler system with a busted head. It waters the daylights out of one part of the lawn, (that obligingly dies of root-rot, and springs mushrooms,) while most of the rest, (except a happy little ring near the head, but far enough away not to suffer from overwatering,) dies from lack of water. The appropriate production and successful and efficient distribution of resources are what mark a successful economy, and differentiate it from most dead ones.
And we are 300 miles off their coast, or closer, and completely undetected. We win.
Its not a ship – its a boat!
Thank you! My late husband served on submarines, in and out of Russian ports on intelligence missions. I appreciate the correction.
t was my first thought that something is wrong with this article.Submarine, Ship..which is it?
meh..
what is usa going to do hit the russian sub that think was a old version they new borei class submarines are bigger then the usa and british ohio class with 1 sub russia could wipe usa britain australia new zealand and ireland in 15 minutes.
Dream on...
Exactly. But no one would win after that happened unfortunately. There would be a big boom boom party before being vaporized though.
Ever use a period, Saeed?
Are you on your's,Robbie?
Ever hear of mutual destruction?
yes, our ship very bigger than americans we make ship big and missle go boom. hold on i change diaper on head ok diaper change stupid america go in flame while saeed and i ride camels oh and we have oil for america hold on new diaper oh and we have sand for america we sell sand for bomb that go boom in america
yes brother we have lot of sand sand good for selling america no good my camel big i ride camel who want camel ride america you want camel ride you ride camel america boom
Russian subs are junk. They are the Yugo of the high seas. You could track them with two tin cans, string and a button.
Not since they bought the milling machines that make our submarines propellers. Silent as the wind. The reactors are the noisiest part of the ship.
Thanks Toshiba.
On a side note, there is a Yugo class of submarine. 🙂
Also, the comm codes the Walker brothers sold to Ivan helped him find out, by monitoring our message traffic, which of his subs were noisy and why. For some it was the vents in the decking which literally which whistled underway.
They should have been filleted.
TWO WORDS HERE: INTERNATIONAL WATERS
Yes but very close to American waters
Hey dude,
Just saying, people with the mindset to make a screen name along the likes of yours, probably ain't gonna make it. Good luck though.
With that said, derpins are usually derps that have never and will never make it.
Dude.
Putin's naval action is a weak limp phallic cry in the wind...

Easy, Charlie, you do matter, and I am sure they were just conducting exercises as previously stated. Several grades of pay below Putin. Russia poses no serious threat, although if we were to invade, we would be able to hold it all just by putting in strip malls on every corner and paying all the workers in cash – US dollars. Way more welcome than Bush and Darth Cheney said we would be in Iraq.
Some people. The Russians are not going to invade. What did the guy doe watch and believe that movie, Red Dawn?
Mr. Putin is out showing his countries strength, but if we went to war with them, we would kick their ass.
I don t think so Yank
Yes we would Rookie....Russia can build em, but they can't maintain them, and they are so easy to track.....
and how exactly do u win a nuclear war with a nuclear winter to follow??????
Move to Chernobyl.
Yeah how many Countries does Putin own or did you mean Country's
Well, not really, not any more! Now that the Honorable Patriotic Leader Chairman Obama has emasculated our fleet, the Russians are salivating about facing our greatly weakened forces.
Remember – Great Leader Obama specifically promised Putin concessions on strategic weapons. these subs are just Putin's way of reminding us that he did not forget about our Great Patriotic Leader's promise....
Freedom's last stand...
Your brain appears to be emasculated.
We navies. We have three ocean going fleets with numerous battle groups. Obama has not emasculated the USN.
Jesus Congo, do you need a tissue?
It's now clear why the Russians don't want their military installations photographed. That place needs cleaning and painting in the worst way.
A few thoughts before everybody gets their panties in a wad...President Putin regularly did things to try to shake people up as part of a program to show the world how important Russia is, when he last was President. The sad part is, the little 'intrigues' he stages (like Hugo Chavez) are an effective way to keep Russia in the news here, but a constant reminder that if we miscalculate the intention behind the silly drama, we risk all, quite literally all the lives on Earth. And that's why the jobs of a lot of very highly intelligent and educated folks in our intelligence agencies and military are very secure in spite of any budget cuts forthcoming. So that you and I can sleep at night, knowing somebody, somewhere, is burning the midnight oil and figuring out what that little Russian 'Napolean-wannabe' is thinking this time.
It seems they were a bit premature, Obama told them after the elections he would have more lead way. Thank god Mitt will be in office by then. God Bless America !!
lol just remember ol' mittens thinks russia is the true enemy!!
Romney will not be the next President of the USA. Watch it up close and personal on the night of 110612. Then enjoy your crow dinner.
Thank you Jerry for bringing us back to reality. You are correct and we owe much to all those who spend the midnight oil to be prepared for the daylight here.
Those enormous, overfunded militaries (on both sides) are the REASON I have trouble sleeping at night.
“When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail”. If we reduced our military spending to just the average per capita spending of our NATO allies, we would save $242,611,117,262 a year. Of course, we would have to be a lot more careful about the fights we pick! Maybe the military should copy NASA’s faster, cheaper, smaller model. It certainly worked great for Mars exploration.
Red Dawn
The Rissian people are much like the American people......all we want is to be left alone and let us life our lifes ! Its the politicans that want to cause problems and even start fights between us ! I have sat down and got drunk with members of the Russian military and they are no different then we are......they have no problems with us at all. Its the political members that cause the problems ! I say put all the political members in a wresling ring and let them have at it.....just leave the public and the military out of it !
Amen brother!
Like I said, if the Russians love their children, too.
Every war has been created by a politician. They are useless lying human beings.
remember the five lying faces of Romney
politics start war the young fight it and every one in the middle dies. what can u do???? but speak your mind and hope nothing becomes of it.
Very smart post. Thank you.
I've spent the better part of 6 months out of the last 18 in Russia and several former-Soviet Republics. Those people don't care about America. And, they just started watching Jersey Shore and Big Bang and are convinced we might be one of the dumbest countries on the planet.
we get no respect
alright....the Cold war again....maybe this time all these GUNG-HO G.I Joes will actually war with each other, kill each other and finally the rest of the world and people that don't want anything to do with war and the war-mongering kind can finally live peacefully.....I do so hope it happens. 🙂
come on natural selection....do your job!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure you're a combat veteran but just in case...How much war have you personally had to endure? Think hard...take your time.
I'm guessing someone else did the warring for you and you have only known peace in your personal experience.
Good Luck on the natural selection thing...you might not get picked.
Fool, WHEN was the last time the US was in ANY danger of invasion???
Chris, go to Arizona and say that.
I so grateful that Our Lord is protecting us and that we have such a great "defense force" in place. But we must also pray for a constant awareness of the enemies around us. The Holy Spirit of God can guide and warn us. I am not surprised that it was a Russian sub. When I heard that Vandenberg AFB has employed China and Russia to assist in their work there, I feared the worst. You don't invite your enemy to your dinner table, neither should you employ them and allow them in highly secure places like the AFB!!! What were they thinking? Lord have mercy!
I can't tell if you are serious, or someone trying to get a rise out of everyone else reading this stuff here. That alone should give you something to think about.
god couldn't even protect his own son
LOL....word!
russia people want to have end of our world too .. Now let israel people flee from jerusalem then bmob ..
It's not that he couldn't protect him, it's that he specifically sent him to die; which would make God a murderer, right?
Get your heads outta your a$$e$, people, and quit buying fairytales as truth!
Jesus is God so in essence he raised himself from the dead, awesome!
you cant even change youre height without shoes....
So your god loves only the US? Russia is full of Christians that believe he loves them. They say the same nonsense as you, only in a different language.
yea like Hezekiah showed off the treasures of the temple and was shortly thereafter taken into captivity
Mr. President, we must not allow a mineshaft gap!
LOL!
After the USN followed it around a bit, testing out various bits of equipment, they blasted the old Soviet Union national anthem underwater just to say "hi" and "welcome" and remind them who's on top.
Time for "HEADS UP." (Assuming, of course, that you, Jack, were around IUSS prior to '93.)
I miss all the fun - I bet you do too.
Waste of time and money on both sides, the money could be spend on improving it's own country rather than playing these stipid games.
Military exercises are not a waste of money. Would you send a team to the Olympics that has not practiced in 3 years? How do you think our boys will perform in hunting down a sub IF THEY'VE NEVER DONE IT BEFORE? It's not the Military that is training, it's the people in the military who are training.
Ok lets look at your response......Olympics....where do you find violence, killing, murdering and raping in the Olympics?????????? Can we keep the perspective on course and not deviate?
It would be cheaper if we didn't have to protect you and your mouth.
It would be even more cheaper if we just capitulated.
you know that response is getting tiring......(yawn)
As soon as the US Navy sinks to fleet capabilities to that of a third world country, we will be all eating Russian black bread and drinking vodka. You severly underestimate the need for a capable military.
The US Navy has more missile launch tubes than the next seventeen navies combined, and most of those are allied navies. You have no idea how lopsided our naval superiority is today.
You wouldn't be so careless in your comments if we were actually invaded by an enemy. It is a real threat to our country. I have been praying for some time that Our Lord foil the plots of our enemies. We do have enemies and they are real! The Lust for Power is a real and great threat. Unfortunately, it has hit too close to home. Only God knows the outcome. Braze yourself for the upheaval about to come!
Your afrek
Your a freak
Why is it so hard for you to believe you control your own destiny and not some eye in the sky
what a pointless waste of money by Russia.
nuclear powered and sailors paid chump change, the only real cost is groceries and cleaning supplies
No, not really. You cannot learn how to take a submarine to sea for months at a time and deploy to distant shores by staying tied to a quay. You have to take your sub across the ocean and stay there to learn how it's done and find out if your equipment can take it. Of course I would rather the Russian skill level stays as low as possible with as few sea days as possible, but those in the Kremiln will of course have a different view.
As long as the Russians remain outside the 12 nautical mile territorial limit, all the US can do is track the sub. It is, however, and outstanding training opportunity. It isn't all that often ASW crews have a real adversary submarine to track. This was a gift from the Kremlin really. I can almost see the sonar techs and ASWOC staff high fiving each other!
out of curiosity, did the Navy ever try the micro organisms that thrive and replicate and consume metallic ions against submarines in seawater?
as a scientist I wonder whether that has been tried or not?
So do they really have the other stargate?
Modern marine coatings are formulated to be toxic to living organisms to prevent the build up of marine growth (algae and barnacles) and thus extend maintenance cycles.
thanks, but I live on the coast so I am aware of the annual hull coatings applied to regular boats such as my little 20footer, however, what I referred to are the organisms that have been tested in mining operations called bioleaching, and also metal devouring organisms have been found in the sea at submarine volcanoes that love iron, etc....and hence should be able to be grown in labs to experiment with...just wondering
Have any of the posters here ever been attached to a US Submarine?
Nope. I'v been on the other end of the dipping sonar in the helicopter. Two dipping sonar helos and crews who know their craft and no sub can escape.
Yes
Yes. I happen to be a barnicle.
P-3C update3 Aircrew here
Look how bleak their base in Yegelnaya Bay is. Also, the subs depicted are Delta III and IV class ballistic missile subs. The sub that cruised off the US coast was a Sierra II class fast attack boat.
This was the diplomatic way of saying to the Russians "nice try but no cigar", we had a datum on your sub for weeks. No awards for that cruise.
I'm sure we have subs off their coasts. It's all just a game.
We had subs sailing well into Soviet territorial waters to place tapping devices on their underwater cables to monitor their communications. One such device was even found by the Soviets and is now on display in a Moscow museum. It even says "US Govt. Property" on it, lol, So much for deniability!
USS Jimmy Carter was built to do that sort of mission, to replace to two elderly subs the US Navy used to use for such special missions. The Soviets returned the favor, of course, and were chased out of Puget Sound on occasion. It is not so much of a game if you need to understand what the other side is up to. You take such big risks when the payoffs justify the risk. Iit is emphatically not done casually.
yes, puget sound was a popular entrance since the northern waters of Canada have no sub fleet, their government is reknowned for having their version of the IRS incessantly slap their citizens while the ruskies have free rein of the territorial waters- in the same museum in ruski land their are pictures of russian sailors with backdrops of canadian coastal views...
The Russians will always have that Socialist mentality and ambition to rule the planet. Look what they have accomplished in Europe for the last 80 years. They are a bunch of hard-headed commies who will always practice deceit !!
You have no idea what goes on at sea. We can be hard nosed customers too. At least the Russians were generally professional. Any navy that aspires to be a global navy sends it's ships far afield. This is the only way you can train adequately.
Russia is a democracy, with an elected President and Parliament. If anything, they are emulating the US. !980 was along time ago.
Not much of a "democracy" when all regional governors are appointed by the President instead of being elected as they once were when Boris Yeltsin was the President, and it is not much of a democracy when there is no opposition press and recent legislation turns political opposition into an act of treason and courts can be used to take the business and imprison entrepenuers who use their wealth to fund a political opposition. It may not be a 1980's redeux yet, but that old KGB thug in the Kremlin is trying his darnedest to get there.
Hopefully, Mr. Putin will be the last of the old skool Soviet leaders.
I used to be a sonar tech in the Navy, and I can assure you, Russian subs stationed near the U.S. coast is no game, especially a boomer. (missle sub)
I like the photo of russia's new subs= clones of ours.
China's new stealth fighters= clone of ours.
The internet makes it so easy to share our expensive R&D with the world.
oh well, by the time anyone actually sees one of our top of the line crafts ( be it plane or ship or anything ) The tech has already been around for 15 to 20 years. If all Russia or China do is copy, they will always be 2 decades behind the US.
Keep in mind though, that we would do well to just assume they actually develop some things for themselves..
Why design it when you can steal it.
You know as well as I do that just because you can steal one doens't mean you can actually manufacture it. The Chinese operate Russian made S-300 missiles but it was just last year or early this year that a Chinese "businessman" was arrested in Russia for trying to obtain design drawings to some component of the S-300. Apparently even with actual missile batteries in service, the Chinese are not completely able to reverse engineer a copy.
Wrt to stealth, all I can say is that physics and material science are no different on their side of the Pacific. They will every bit as long working out the many problems of going fast and staying stealthy as we have, and we have been at the steath game for decades, way back to the old A-12.SR-71.
Don't think so. Their profiles simply register as quite similar and confuse the enemy? BTW while we're seemingly gloating over a detected sub which is not nuclear armed, what do you say about the undetected nuclear sub in Gulf of Mexico
http://www.worldtribune.com/2012/08/20/congress-asks-how-russian-sub-went-undetected-in-gulf-of-mexico/
STEALTH technology is RUSSIAN (Popular Science, Oct 1994, LINKS BELOW), according to the head of Skunk Works, Ben Rich, the constructor of the US stealth planes.
One of the main Russian guys who developed the technology teaches at UC Berkeley, if I remember correctly.
Americans got the technology from the Russians. The Russians couldn't build it because they didn't have sophisticated enough computers (centrally planned economies suck!).

If they hear Sean Connery's voice over the radio channel speaking in a bad Russian accent, it's all cool.
I cannot believe how far down I had to scroll to find my first reference to The Hunt for Red October.
I think they wish to board us captain. You will report that the torpedo impacted the target and I was never here.
you will receive the order of lenin for this.
Nothing new here. The US and Russia have always done this. Then tempo may have decreased since the 70s and 80s, but it still happens. Those of us that where born back in the cold war days know the drill well and really could care less.
This is only worry some to those who did not live in the cold war times and are used to feeling like the US should never let this happen. All I can say is that at this vary minute there are us subs playing the same game off Russia's far north and pacific coasts. I guess you could call it, 'Sub on to them as they sub onto us'. Not a big deal at all and it dose not signify weakness even if we had not detected the sub.
reading the musings of this slice of amerikana is just plain scary. a country inhabited mostly by morons.
just watch a few music videos on youtube and you'll be fine
A trip to Walmart would have told you that!
Calls us moron's and he can't even spell America right.
Why is the government publicizing this "discovery?" Because it wants Russia to know that we have technologies capable of detecting their submarines. While it serves as a deterrent factor, it also alerts the Russian military of their need to advance their own anti-detection technologies. It would have been better to let the Russians believe their vessel was undetected, but we seem to be unable to keep out mouths shut about our own achievements and capabilities.
In my time the CO of an SSN that could track a Soviet boomer on patrol received a case of good whiskey and a big pat on the back. Everyone knew we tracked their boats. We would pin them down with a couple of helos and a frigate and hammer them with sonar. It is very demoralizing for the submarine crew to have to suffer through a couple of days of non stop active sonar.
It hard to sleep when you are being pinged on!
Excuse me? Our nation and what was the Soviet Union now Russia practice shooting nuclear missiles at each other 3 times a day, every day, holidays included. If you really think the missile forces in either country do not train, you are sadly mistaken. When is the last time any of you monitored the end of the world clock? Do you have any idea? These weapons are so powerful, ones imagination fails to take in the extent the damage. They represent death for every single human being on this planet make no mistake on that. And yet governments play at this game of practice shooting everyday. It is cavalier and grossly inappropriate by any means period. It is up to all of us to end this threat to not only our own personal lives but to our children's live. The minute some numbnut uses a nuclear weapon all hands are off and we all can kiss our collective backsides goodbye... Thank you all for your time . Have a great day..... Scoresheet.
Did you say something? I stopped reading at "excuse"
Good stuff, huh America? BTW...this is complete BS. The US Navy had NO IDEA those subs were there until the Russians started bragging about it. Wanna know the real story? Those Russian subs got close enough in the Gulf of Mexico to fire ICBM's "underneath" our Patriot Missile Defence System. I love how 90% of this country thinks we are militarily untouchable...you've been lied to and you believe it on the false pretense of government sponsored media outlets such as this one. There is posturing, thanks to our ludicrous involvement in the Middle East since 2001, the world is getting ready to strike back. Don't even worry about the fact that without nukes the world would destroy us, let me ask you this...if the third world as a whole decided to stop sending us food how long do you think our economy would survive? All of these "friends" we have throughout the world (outside of west europe) are held at gunpoint as soon as we're weak they will turn quick. Hell, I can't even see Canada caring enough about us when SHTF. haha...you ready?
Freedom F. Wow, I have heard of some off the cuff BS, and your rant is right up there. Of course you know the real story of what happened don't you. Seeing how you have access to top secret information, yet you will divulge to us exactly what happened throwing national securtiy to the back seat. Wake up, grow up, and get a job
you should checks your "facts" Do you have any knowledge of subs even? Gertrude? As far as food from 3rd world countries, we buy the goods and we also send out food to developing countries. Take away our ships and other countries shipments don't all make it.
First off, attack subs don't cary ICBMs. Second, noise mitigation on Russian subs is a joke. Third, patriot missiles aren't used against ICBMs, only tactical missiles such as SCUDs. You are ill-informed, and a fool.
Are you in the Navy? Are you a SubSailor? Are you Qualified in Subs? Do you have a T.S. clearence? if you dont You have no opinion here.

Please call the pharmacy and have your meds put on AUTOMATIC refill. You'll be glad you did.
Fill your prescriptions at CVS and it's taken care of, lol, whether you need refills or not.
You must work in the Pentagon. Since you are so in the know, then could I trouble you to explain to the ignorant what a convergence zone is, or layer depth, or a towed array, or a transducer, or ODT vs UDT transmission? And what's Q5, or Mk48? And just out of curiosity, ever handle a nuke ASROC? Frankly, I bet you think passive mode is lying on the couch watching TV.
Hey, Bob -
You're making me weep with nostalgia. I'm the guy who wrote those articles and training series for HEADS UP, the SURTASS monthly. Did you like my stuff? I tried to be entertaining as well as informative. And frankly I miss it.
Also - ASROC Sentry - PRP - I used to report, "Acid Rock all secure." Ahh - the old days....
Furtheremore, I feel a Russian sub after all this dead time is a lot better than all this terrorism crap. We need a REAL opponent - not mosquitoes.
So it's back to the cold war, When my generation (born in 1991) takes control, you can count on real progress!!!!!
Oh yeh, your the generation with all the tatoos and body piercings, that jams to rap music. I look forward to your generation taking things over.
Hey my complaints are yours, But there are a few good apples apoun a dying tree, dont let a bunch of punks spoil hope!!!
Actually, Scott, I taught Computer Modules Tech Ed to the HS class of '04 when they were in 8th grade. Those kids were GOOD, man. Talented - alert - creative (Herb Brooks, MIRACLE) - and dedicated - all they needed was a teacher who wouild trust and respect them.
My students are the ones who were sent to Iraq. Seems to me they did pretty well. I'm proud of "The Chosen Class."
"When my generation takes control, you can count on real progress!!!!!"
That's what the Hippies said too.
Mayhaps but the difference is, Were not afraid to fight!!! (and we have haircuts)
omg curiositycat, please scurry back to facebook or your WOW account and never come back.
They're lucky we have Obama instead of Reagan as president. They wouldn't have even sent one under reagan. They know Obama is a whimp.
You must have never lived through a minute of the Cold War. I'm guessing under 15, right? The US and the USSR did this all the time to each other and, yes, it happened while Reagan was in office.
I saw enough Soviet subs, surface ships and aircraft during the Carter/Reagan years from the deck of an American frigate, very often close enough to see the faces on the Russians, once getting as close to a Soviet destroyer as we would get to our own carriers to refuel, which is rock throwing distance.
Saw a cruiser sandwich in the mid Pacific, a Soviet Navy Nikolaev class guided missile cruiser sandwiched between the USS California and USS Antietam, so close there wakes blended together, running in excess of 30 knots, the US ships trying to keep the Soviet ship away from the aircraft carrier. And of course the big Bear bombers and Il-38 May patrol planes with their toothpaste green paint jobs, buzzed our ships.
At least back then the bad guys painted big red stars on their equipment and you could count on them to be fairly professional. Not so much with todays enemies.
Nice try Mr. Tea Bagger. Perhaps next time you educate yourself before making a fool of yourself. But don't worry, you'll have 4 more years to learn.
If you are stupid and have no clue, shut the H*&L up.
You mean Bush... Bush would have attacked them for this blatant provocation, he was a stupid, err, strong president. And the economy would go even further to hell, but when war's on your mind, who gives a siht about economy??? He was such a excellent pres. that 47% of us don't even have to pay any federal taxes, AND now get ready for part 2 of this remarkable Bush era if this hypocrite Roomney wins.
I still shake my head at the dipstick aircraft commander of that damaged EP-3 landing in Hainan China and Bush's quivering lower lip, knee shaking response. The airplane should have been cruise missiled into melted aluminum and plastic immediately and the aircraft commander courts martialled. I'd have rather taken my chances trying to limp that plane to someplace friendlier or, if worse came to worse, bailing out than landing in China.
I think it was during the Reagan administration that a Soviet Yankee class ballistic missile sub surfaces not so far from the east coast of the US due to the explosion of a missile in it's launch tube. The sub surfaced then later sank.
I can also remember the Soviet intelligence gathering ships sitting a couple of dozen miles off the coast near major US cities. Since they were in international waters there was nothing we could legally do. Our orders were to never overfly or harass these ships.
Yeah...Reagan who ordered the U.S. Marines to whimper out of Lebanon with their tails between their legs after 300 of them were blown to pieces in their own barracks. Reagan was a real macho man.
Moron.
Ya, sure.
Sigh! The Young and The Reckless! Have at it. You're bored to death anyhow. A Nuke is a Nuke is a Nuke. Get us all cooked and make it last for eons while you're at it. This is not a "my dixk is bigger than your..." game. It's irreversible and all sides get committed. We're not the only "thinkers" out there. Best of luck.
Go to your bathroom and jack 1.

Russian sub commander: Have we been detected?
Russian XO: Yes
Russian sub commander: OK mission accomplished.
И решительный бой;
И решительный бой;
И решительный бой;
И решительный бой;
И решительный бой;
И решительный бой;
С Интернационалом
Воспрянет род людской! 😐
If I translated correctly, I'm with you Steel. We could all stand up against the elite and take our world back...
Here is a Russkie's translation...in a shortened version! Never trust them; beware of them, for they are wolves in sheep's clothing!
Comrade Steel
Rise, проклятьем заклеймённый,
All world hungry and slaves!
Our reason revolted boils
And in mortal fight of a message it is ready.
насилья we shall destroy all world
Up to основанья, and then
We ours, we shall construct the new world,—
Who was anything, that becomes all.
Refrain:
|: It is our last
And resolute fight;
With Интернационалом
The sort human will rise!
Nobody will give us избавленья:
Neither the god, nor tsar and not hero!
Добьёмся we освобожденья
Своею own hand.
To derthrow oppression a hand skilful,
To win the goods,—
Вздувайте a forge also forge safely,
While iron is hot!
|:Это there is our last
And resolute fight;
With Интернационалом
The sort human will rise!: |
It is enough to suck blood, vampires,
Prison, the tax, poverty!
At you — all authority, all the blessings of the world,
And our right — a sound empty!
We shall construct a life differently—
And here our slogan fighting:
All authority to people labour!
And freeloaders of all down with!
|:Это there is our last
And resolute fight;
With Интернационалом
The sort human will rise!: |
You are contemptible in abundance,
Coal also there were kings!
You your thrones, parasites,
On our backs have erected.
Factories, factories, chambers—
All to ours is created by work.
It is time! We require return
That is taken by a robbery.
|:Это there is our last
And resolute fight;
With Интернационалом
The sort human will rise!
There is enough kings to please
To stupefy us in the child of war!
War to tyrants! The world to People!
Strike, armies сыны!
When tyrants will force us
In fight heroically a mouth for them—
Murderers, to you then we shall direct
We muzzles of guns fighting!
|: It is our last
And resolute fight;
With Интернационалом
The sort human will rise!
Only we, workers worldwide
Great army of work,
To own the ground we have the right,
But parasites – never!
And if the thunder great will burst
Above rack of dogs and executioners,—
For us all as the sun becomes
Сиять fire of the beams.
|: It is our last
And resolute fight;
With Интернационалом
The sort human will rise!

Those Russian Subs look to me like those “rubber tanks” that were strategically placed in England during WW11 to make the Nazi’s think Patton was assembling a strike force.
Вы уверены, что разговаривают смешно
Marxist tripe.
