New pictures show second Chinese stealth fighter being test flown

WASHINGTON (CNN) - CNN has obtained detailed photographs of a new stealth fighter being tested in China.

It is the second such stealth fighter China has tested in as many years and appears destined to become the communist nation's future aircraft carrier-based fighter jet, according to weapons analysts.

The plane, dubbed by outsiders as the J-31, was test flown Tuesday in Shenyang. According to the analysts, the two photographs obtained by CNN appear to have been leaked by officials in China.

"It has to be an official photographer because nobody else can get that close to the airplane," said John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org. "These are all publicity photos from the factory, and I could not imagine that the factory would publicize these things without somebody higher up in the food chain authorizing it."

Richard Fisher, a senior fellow in Asian military affairs at the International Assessment and Strategy Center (IASC), agrees these are not pictures sent out surreptitiously by some Chinese aviation aficionado. "The Internet censors are controlling this process, have no doubt that."

But Fisher said the reason for the release may not be as threatening as some might imagine.

"It's being done in a way to help promote pro-military nationalism in China. There's just a huge, large audience in China for this kind of information. It's kind of like NASCAR."

No matter who let the pictures go public, they won't answer all the questions surrounding China's fighter program. "They don't want to reveal anything that's truly useful to a foreign military or intelligence service," Fisher said.

In January 2011, China tested the J-20, a fighter jet with stealth characteristics, much like the American F-22.

Fisher said the J-31 appears be a lighter fighter jet similar to the American F-35.

"The J-20 is the heavy stealth fighter, (The J-31) is going to be the medium-weight stealth fighter. It's very much in the same vein as the F-22 versus the F-35, with the Raptor, the F-22 being the heavy fifth-generation fighter for the U.S. Air Force versus the medium-weight F-35."

Pike said that could be the case, but it may be that China is test flying both prototypes and will choose just one to put into production.

While these are both fifth-generation fighter jets, that doesn't put them on par with America's two newest fighters.

For example, Pike said China's jet engines just don't come close to American engines. "This is a sucking chest wound of Chinese military aviation."

Pike said the primary Chinese military jet engine is based on an American design. "We started development of this engine back in the '60s. Then they commercialized it in the 1970s. Then the Chinese got a hold of it 20 years ago and it's still no good. It's a half century-old design that they've been working on for two decades, and it's still no good."

Fisher has a higher opinion of that engine. "It's not entirely true that China is currently facing massive problems. They've actually had some measure of success."

And Fisher said China appears to be developing a brand new engine for the J-31. "The engines that will likely power the J-31 we do know a bit more about. Those engines were actually revealed at the Zhuhai show in 2008," Fisher said referring to an annual China air show. He believes the new J-31 engine is undergoing preliminary testing.

Another problem is the stealth characteristics of the plane.

The J-31 is designed to have a stealthy shape. "From the side profile, it really looks like a 75% (scale) F-22 from the bottom, and the top profile it very much looks like an F-35."

The J-31 may have the stealth coatings that help it absorb radar signals instead of letting them bounce off and give away its position.

But Pike explained the plane has wide seams where different parts of the plane come together. "The seams form something the radar can bounce off of. I'm looking at some close-ups of the J-31 and it's seamy. It's got all kinds of seams and ripples on the skin."

Fisher agreed. "Yes, that's definitely a fair assessment, but what we can say is that it will have a definite low-observable capability, that's for sure."

While it may start out as a land-based fighter, Pike and Fisher both said it could become China's carrier-based fighter jet when the nation builds a second, catapult-based carrier. Their first carrier, currently undergoing sea tests, uses a ski-jump style flight deck to launch planes.

So should America start worrying about these new fighters ?

"Who else do you think these airplanes were designed to fight?" Pike said. "If the Chinese think that their military is a lot stronger than anybody else in the neighborhood, then they're going to throw their weight around."

Pike estimated the J-31 might become a threat in 2027. "You would expect to see the Chinese stealth fighter enter operational service, I don't know, 15 years from now."

Fisher is predicting much sooner.

"My estimate is that the J-31 will start entering squadron service in four to five years."

Oh, yeah, them canards make that bird REAL stealthy!

I'll take one F-22 Raptor against eight Chicom J-31s. And if we get smart and start releasing the F-22 as a "shepherd" aircraft with eight drone UAV "Killer Sheep" as wingmen I'll take 32 Chicom J-31s against one F-22 shepherd and his flock.

Of course the Chinese have the planes. Where else would the F-35 be outsourced to?

A bit of history: After WWII, Stalin order thst a B-29 be copied. The Russian had to form as many as 400 companies to mae everything from scratch (copy). When they were finished, they noticed there was a deep scratch so they scracthed the copied model exactly the same.

Stalin didn't even notice the scratch, he was more interested to see if it could fly. It did. The Russian gained a lot of experience and went on to design their own eventually.

I am chinese myself but honestly...I do not believe that the chinese government is able to compete with the US military strength nor that the US or any other nations should be afraid of China. I mean China's politics are so messed up right now and I sincerely wish that one day the gov. of China will come to an insight that communism is no reliable as forming and controlling a whole nation. I do not approve everything what the US gov. is doing but at least I do have more trust and hope into american politicians than into chinese politicans. two nations, two great (different) cultures should comform each other instead of dividing. peace <3

its a fake, a photoshoped model, the day they fly one will be the last day of their lives- we will obliterate them, by the time they fly one we will have had a few million drones in service and unleash those, besides it is a known fact the chinese cannot create anything new and are substandard at copying items- anything, so good luck with china ever getting a toe hold, as a matter of fact they have already lost the economic war also- just they themselves and us the general public dont know it yet....but the chinese are inferior to us americans in every way, every way.

Eric, I was a fortunate visitor of Hong Kong on several occasions back in the late 80's, early 90's (before China took control). A nice place. A definate culture shock to say the least but a great leaning experience. Having said that, with the instability of China and its neighbors over territorial waters and islands, its going to be a bit shaky. North Korea isn't exactly helping the region either. I guess its like my neighbors whose overgrown weeds are growing through my fence and some words are exchanged. Hopefully thats as far as it gets with my neighbor and hopefully we will never see a US/China conflict. I don't believe it would be a simple hit and run episode.

Well said Eric. The Chinese communist system is dysfunctional but moving toward capitalism economically, which extended its life. The American republic system was functional but is moving toward socialism which shortens its life.

Inevitably the two countries will collide in interests many times, but eventually China will eclipse America and decisively win militarily and economically as China graduates toward a governance in-line with their capitalist economic engine, and America will descend into European style subsistence on government hand-outs.

The great American experiment will die in the Western world but it will live for a time longer in China.

Eric: AMEN, BROTHER! America nad China do NOT have to go to war. But what the Han have to do is get rid of this communist government and replace it with a government based on personal freedom for the individual and equal rights for all. Should this happen, China would really be a power to contend with, not a potential enemy, but as a partner in commerce and peace. But we both know the PLA view the US as the Main Enemy, just like that idiot Vlad the Poisoner in Russia. What the hell does ANYONE gain by ramping up this three-camp world we are devolving into? (All pardons to India, which seems to mind its own business for the most part, but deserves to be the fourth power).

I have to agree with the analysts, I think the design looks inferior but I don't think China is looking to make it as perfected and complex as it's American counterparts. There is a huge advantage to simplicity, it can be made faster and costs less.

I dont think Americans genuinely care about Chinese citizens, even though we use examples of Chinese citizen oppression from the Communist regime to legitimize our attacks against the Chinese government, or the Chinese nation as a whole.

Cooler heads prevailed? I think the American public needs to tone down anti-Chinese sentiment. Simple fact is, we only care about legitimizing our attacks. This, is not the "care" that brings cooperation and understanding.

The US might is over.... Let's accept it we are no longer great as decades past. The Chinese are the next superpower and we will have to make wat and step aside. Let us focus on getting out of Afghanistan where lives are lost every day and nobody seems to care. Let's focus on getting the country back in order, if we keep spending so much on defense no way we can balance our budget. let's close some bases that are not that vital anf leave a few just to have a presence in the area. Yes we need to keep an eye on China but we can do it with less money, if not we will be our own worse enemy....

Philip it is obvious that you have been in the Military, because if you had you would have become educated and worldly too see the big picture of a lot of what is going on in the world.

I do not think the Chinese will be the sole dominating superpower in the future. I think the future will be a multi-polar world, where regional powers have the power to impact the world due to rippling effect of interdependency.

Relax, fellow Americans. The Chinese will have their strengths and weaknesses, so are we. We need to focus on rebuilding our infrastructure instead of policing the world as if the world needs our policing.

No nation is perfect, politics and the way we live are constantly changing, evolving with us. China has it's obvious flaws, and its rather understandable why some would say that China has stolen tech. It is simply a matter of national pride. We should be happy to have that. I looked into Chinese culture, and there are a lot of progressive thinkers, and evolution will change nations. The pyramid on the back of the dollar isn't finished because Democracy is a work in progress, as intended by our founding fathers. I am proud to be American and prouder to be man.

Guess what Joe they do have a group of spies. But it is not the clandestine type most thing of. They have spies in the form of students. Yes students, who come tot he US and take up loads of spots in top universities getting degrees in things like engineering which they bring back to China with them. Go look up the term brain drain. China now has their own silicon valley . Where did they get such knowledge? From the US. And why is the knowledge being drained out of the US instead of staying right here? Because too many US student do not put in the work. They are too busy aspiring to be gangstas, pro athletes, GI Joe, or living like it is 1812 and farting around with guns and hunting.

It's all too easy to figure out...

    Simple Outline:

-The Jews print money at will (giving them all the power to do with as they please).

-With that money, they purchased (stole) the entire American manufacturing industry (we create, they corrupt & destroy).

-Then, they moved it all to China (this all happened right under our noses in a relatively short span of time, yet very few are able to recognize the obvious, even to this day).

-All the while, they tax us into slavery, and sell us back OUR goods, that are now laced with lead and other toxic substances (think that was a coincidence/accident or the fault of the Chinese slaves on the other end?). Yes, this is just another way the Jews have poisoned us (and our children).

-In the meantime, they stole OUR technologies (all they do in China is reproduce everything we invent, discover, and create), our military secrets, and fund the very RED army they will eventually use to strike the final blow in our coffin justified by our false "debt" to them. Do you "think" they are arming them for "nothing", and convincing the Chinese that we "owe" them for "no reason"? Will you still "believe" that as the RED Chinese army is marching down your street?

And on the back end of all of this, they have most of the American sheeple convinced that we somehow "owe" the Chinese, as they have engaged in a relentless propaganda campaign in China as well to convince them of the same ridiculous lie.

Wow.. What a scam these Jews have pulled off. Robbing us blind, destroying our economy, stripping our entire manufacturing industry down to the bones, and convincing the Chinese that we are in "debt" to them (of course the Jews have complete control over China, so all that "debt" they created on this end, goes right to them on the other...screwing us both coming and going)

Unless of course you "think" this was all a "coincidence" and "believe" that the Chinese somehow out smarted us, swooped in and stole everything on their own, and beat us at our own game...To point out the obvious: these are OUR inventions and OUR technologies, nothing originally "Chinese" about ANY of "their" products or weaponry.. (what would they threaten us with if not armed with OUR military "secrets".. bows and arrows?).

Again, they are using OUR technologies against us... to include, in the not too distant future, the military technologies that were stolen from us. "Ironic" isn't it? Or so it would seem, to a person who is unaware of the Jewish agenda and their usual modus operandi.

While there are a significant number of Chinese graduate and undergraduate students in our universities, and a good share of them do return to China with knowledge of current technology and manufacturing skills, there is also a well trained industrial espionage presence in the country that is controlled by China and Chinese surrogates. One of the other things the Chinese are gifted at is buying up wrecked military aircraft, studying them, and reverse engineering them. The plane shown here is obviously copied from an F-15, a plane that has been sold worldwide to allied governments who might allow Chinese engineers to examine, or even take one apart to obtain the necessary details for production. We know they don't have the capability to manufacture the highly complex surface/skin coverings that swallow radar impulses, but they have obtained the ability to produce the surface coatings that bend the radar impulses that give the aircraft near stealth capabilities. In ten years they will be producing the skin materials we had twenty years ago. I doubt they can develop the capacity to produce current skin materials unless there is a significant act by an american traitor who gives the methodology away.

China has never been a country which went outside its boundaries for imperial gain. That has been true for 1,000 of years. That is not true of the USA though. Americans have pushed their way into the affairs of people around the globe. Then they wonder why people get mad at them, in those other countries. As Jesus said: "Do unto others, as ye would have them do unto you."

So every times these kinds of things happened, i checked medias from both sides, west and China. So called "Tibet issue" is very complicated. In my opinion, government did really a good job. We have a lot of problems, huge population, one-party dictatorship, pollution etc., but we keep trying to fix them. I believe the next younger generation will solve these problems better if no war happen in the future :).

Americans are not our enemies, now your guys more like our teachers and show us the way to build our country wealthy and confident. After 1979(in that year, my father was a freshman in the middle school), China is not a communist country, China is not a socialist country, I don't want to say that we are now totally a capitalist country.

Rubbish. China is not a third world country; it is a fully industrialized country. Just because people are treated as if they were expendable does not make it a third world country.

The reason China has a third world feel is that they do everything on the cheap. I was just there and I was stunned to see the concrete around the "Bird's Nest" already crumbling. China needs to stop building for 30 year use and build things to last.

Funny, but if you search "Tony Martin Jewish Onslaught" you will find out that Jews, not Whites, orchestrated the African Slave Trade. If you look at the "Fed", you will find that Jews, not Whites, "just happen" to print the money. If you look at the media, you will find that Jews, not Whites, "just happen" to have a monopoly over that as well. If you look at the food on your grocery store shelves, you will find that there are KOSHER symbols on the labels, not Swastikas. If you look at the senseless wars throughout history, you will find that Jewish interests were served, while Whites, Browns, Reds, and Yellows (Gentiles) died by the millions. If you look at the Chinese industry and military, you will find that Jews purchased up the entire American manufacturing industry (easy to do when you print the money) and relocated it to China. Not only that, but all of those military weapons and technologies "just happened" to find themselves in Chinese hands by way of Jewish/Israeli spies... Coincidence? I think not. But I understand why you would believe every lie you were ever told, due to that monopoly they have over the media. On the other hand, it's all so obvious to anyone capable of critical thinking.

I'm not sure why Americans have such self imposed low self esteem in regards to China. It is almost universal that everytime China achieves something the first words being rattle off by Americans is how crappy they are and how they stole etc.
Last I check China never said nor have they threaten to fight the US so why this mentality of sarcasm and put down?
I think China would be the first to say American products are great and they look up to them that's why they emulate the US. It's sad and ashamed that the US tries it very hardest to look down on them and criticize them at every turn.
The US it seems, is determine to make China it's enemy.
China invented paper printing and gunpowder and thousand other things. They also invented the compass. You don;t see the average Chinese condemning Americans each time someone prints a book, look at a compass or shoots a bullet!
One would surmise that Americans are very xenophonic, racist and suffers from low self esteem.

Here's a hint: when an American goes to China every store owner, cab driver, etc. tries to rip the American off.
I was in Beijing and all the cab drivers were colluding to give me a ride for 100 RMB when I knew it should cost less than 37 (it cost me 37 in rush hour to get where I was). When I told them I would only ride with the meter running, they refused (even though that is against Beijing law). I ended up taking the subway for 2 RMB and walking 1.5 miles!

I suppose you stole that active radar from us like everthing else. As for the missiles having thrust vectoring, that is interesting and a good accomplishment. I was thinking more along the lines of the plane itself being able to turn on a dime in midflight to maneuver behind it's opponent to gain tactical advantage.

That said, most of the modern jets can acquire and fire from so far a distance close air-to-air combat is going to be less common.

"Based on American Design" - yeah like everything else over there. Chinese government supresses innovation by the individual and expression - but they still want the benefits of a populace that doesn't live under those conditions. So you have to hack, steal, and spy your way just to "catch up"... Time for another revolution guys, then at least you can compete with the US honorably. I'd feel pretty bad inside if I knew that all my nations achievements are based on everyone elses ideas. Invent something new of your own. Your culture is one of the oldest in human history and your government stifles what makes you great as a people.

The truth is that of course a missile can bring down a plane. Air Power is only as good either defensively or offensively as the leadership and positioning of the technology you have. An f-15 actually might just be unable to get close enough without being taken down by a missile itself. If a missile is supposed to fly a 1000 miles across the ocean from a safe position that missile can be taken down itself. If you want to get ballsy beyond actual dog fighting during training you should have nothing to do with any part of the air force. I would be truly sad if any belief led any army into demise by try to attack a country such as china or russia which has proven defensive strategy. advanced systems such as stealth technology, or ultimate ownership of the air as demonstrated by the suk-38 of the glorious russian armed forces air fleet.

If you take another layer from the onion of truth you would be even more alarmed not at the planes stealth but at the computer equipment onboard. I read somebody mentioned a super computer which puts our own computer technology to rest being made in china. This is not a stealth b2 bomber, and a lot of people might be confused. This plane by sight has a body designed like a russian sukhoi and comes from a country that outclasses the united states in electronic warfare.

If you want to be big and bad maybe you can convince your leaders to allow for the challenge standing of russian planes with russian pilots against US planes and US pilots in mock dog fighting and tactical performance combat training. The United States has ceased allowing russian pilots to fly against american pilots after a not to well known defeat. The pride of Americas air force will only allow to combat against german migs using german tactics on a pretty favorable ground. The challenge is standing. I would love to see the sukhoi fly against your 35 or the chinese j31. for the record I am a Russian and take my pride putting on my pants in the morning for the great Военно-воздушные силы. China has no intelligence or ability to build these without sending in spies into the US military industry. American companies need to realize all Chinese nationals who enter the USA are sworn by an oath to spy for China. Those who receive work visas are like China winning Powerball everyday. Chinese citizens work for US companies and they must, by law, report all intelligence they gain in that job. Students who attend US universities who do internships at American companies are sworn by the same laws to report back to party officials about everything they learned about that company. This includes trade secrets, procedures, and everything they can collect. China then uses this to boost their own industry along with military knowledge. This project is a direct result of spy activity.

The Chinese steal anything they can, this is their culture. America is very stupid and dumb to think otherwise. We are being played as fools, especially with the current administration and even the bone heads of Congress. What America needs to do now is develop and keep under raps is a supersonic stealf faster than a speeding bullet jet drone. Lighter weight but packs a leathal punch. We also need to stop building these huge carriers and build much smaller and much faster attack carriers that can land and launch drones along with more sophicated & faster subs. It has come down to rapid response by the military and special ops forces even better trained. Hint, train with Isreal they are the best! When I say rapid deployment, I mean anywhere in the world with 24 hours or less. Finally we need a rules of engagement put in place, do this and this is what happens. It is not just military intervention here folks.

Just look. China is not our worry right now. Obama keeps cutting our Military so much that like history has shown, when a DEMOCRAP cuts the Military we get an attack... God hopes this man doesnt get another term. Most of the real American left in this country doesnt like this guy and like most of my unit will not be voting for any COMMIE! Free America...

How dare you speak of stealing, you Europeans committed genocide against 100 million indigenous people in the western hemisphere, since the day Columbus set foot on it's soil, that includes 10 million that you killed in what we call today's America and put the rest on Reservations which are no more than glorified concentration camps. You stole their land and are still occupying it. You have the gall to question atrocities everywhere else in the world but won't face your own. The new world order will be a world where you will no longer be able to cause the suffering that you caused throughout history, and the world will be a better place after you are gone.

No doubt this aircraft has been developed with stolen from US intellectual property. China is showing off its new military equipment to the masses consistent with their national propaganda machine.
