New pictures show second Chinese stealth fighter being test flown

WASHINGTON (CNN) - CNN has obtained detailed photographs of a new stealth fighter being tested in China.

It is the second such stealth fighter China has tested in as many years and appears destined to become the communist nation's future aircraft carrier-based fighter jet, according to weapons analysts.

The plane, dubbed by outsiders as the J-31, was test flown Tuesday in Shenyang. According to the analysts, the two photographs obtained by CNN appear to have been leaked by officials in China.

"It has to be an official photographer because nobody else can get that close to the airplane," said John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org. "These are all publicity photos from the factory, and I could not imagine that the factory would publicize these things without somebody higher up in the food chain authorizing it."

Richard Fisher, a senior fellow in Asian military affairs at the International Assessment and Strategy Center (IASC), agrees these are not pictures sent out surreptitiously by some Chinese aviation aficionado. "The Internet censors are controlling this process, have no doubt that."

But Fisher said the reason for the release may not be as threatening as some might imagine.

"It's being done in a way to help promote pro-military nationalism in China. There's just a huge, large audience in China for this kind of information. It's kind of like NASCAR."

No matter who let the pictures go public, they won't answer all the questions surrounding China's fighter program. "They don't want to reveal anything that's truly useful to a foreign military or intelligence service," Fisher said.

In January 2011, China tested the J-20, a fighter jet with stealth characteristics, much like the American F-22.

Fisher said the J-31 appears be a lighter fighter jet similar to the American F-35.

"The J-20 is the heavy stealth fighter, (The J-31) is going to be the medium-weight stealth fighter. It's very much in the same vein as the F-22 versus the F-35, with the Raptor, the F-22 being the heavy fifth-generation fighter for the U.S. Air Force versus the medium-weight F-35."

Pike said that could be the case, but it may be that China is test flying both prototypes and will choose just one to put into production.

While these are both fifth-generation fighter jets, that doesn't put them on par with America's two newest fighters.

For example, Pike said China's jet engines just don't come close to American engines. "This is a sucking chest wound of Chinese military aviation."

Pike said the primary Chinese military jet engine is based on an American design. "We started development of this engine back in the '60s. Then they commercialized it in the 1970s. Then the Chinese got a hold of it 20 years ago and it's still no good. It's a half century-old design that they've been working on for two decades, and it's still no good."

Fisher has a higher opinion of that engine. "It's not entirely true that China is currently facing massive problems. They've actually had some measure of success."

And Fisher said China appears to be developing a brand new engine for the J-31. "The engines that will likely power the J-31 we do know a bit more about. Those engines were actually revealed at the Zhuhai show in 2008," Fisher said referring to an annual China air show. He believes the new J-31 engine is undergoing preliminary testing.

Another problem is the stealth characteristics of the plane.

The J-31 is designed to have a stealthy shape. "From the side profile, it really looks like a 75% (scale) F-22 from the bottom, and the top profile it very much looks like an F-35."

The J-31 may have the stealth coatings that help it absorb radar signals instead of letting them bounce off and give away its position.

But Pike explained the plane has wide seams where different parts of the plane come together. "The seams form something the radar can bounce off of. I'm looking at some close-ups of the J-31 and it's seamy. It's got all kinds of seams and ripples on the skin."

Fisher agreed. "Yes, that's definitely a fair assessment, but what we can say is that it will have a definite low-observable capability, that's for sure."

While it may start out as a land-based fighter, Pike and Fisher both said it could become China's carrier-based fighter jet when the nation builds a second, catapult-based carrier. Their first carrier, currently undergoing sea tests, uses a ski-jump style flight deck to launch planes.

So should America start worrying about these new fighters ?

"Who else do you think these airplanes were designed to fight?" Pike said. "If the Chinese think that their military is a lot stronger than anybody else in the neighborhood, then they're going to throw their weight around."

Pike estimated the J-31 might become a threat in 2027. "You would expect to see the Chinese stealth fighter enter operational service, I don't know, 15 years from now."

Fisher is predicting much sooner.

"My estimate is that the J-31 will start entering squadron service in four to five years."

Who here thinks that a person who can only steal ideas and grows up in an educational system that stifles creativity can have a better chance of out innovating a person who grows up immersed educationally and culturally in the ideals of innovation and creativity?

That is why China will surely never be able to technologically out maneuver the Western countries. They will always be behind...stealth is yesterday's news China. And so is retrofitting a decaying carrier for modern use.

Putting the word "Chinese" in front of the word "American" does not exactly make them Chinese you know. Ethnicity != Nationality. Ask any of them if they consider themselves American or if they consider themselves Chinese. You will get the real answer.

I'm an American who was born in Vietnam. I say to you that Vietnam has good food, some nice scenery, so so art and poetry, but can't hold a candle to Western technology or musical innovation. Let's put it this way, Americans went to the moon..while Vietnamese make good food and sing horrible copycat songs with horrible accents.

Now, if I can say this about my own race and former nation...why can you not say something that isn't so flattering for China? Because you are brainwashed my asian brother. And the sooner you get out of that mindset of patriotism for the sake of patriotism or pride...it will make the world a better place.

Except as a theoretical concept, the idea that authoritarian states cannot compete is nonsence. Look a German Tiger tank or the T-34 or IV Stalin II tank vs an US WWII tank. Russians have produced a significant number of excellent weapons: AK-47 to the AN-94, S-400 ABM system, SS-18 ICBM, nerve gas, rugged vehicles, quad 23mm anti-aircraft system. thermobarics, RPG-29, AT-14 & 15 anti-tank missiles are excellent.

Tiger II and Stalin tanks were hardly "game changers". In fact they were some of the first "hangar queens" because they were too heavy – they wore out parts too fast, burned up more fuel to go shorter distances, and got bogged down if the ground wasn't dry. Its those reasons, among others, why the US never fielded heavy tank designs (even though many were in development) other than the Pershing which was more of a medium/ heavy. Plus that idea ignores something that was at the core of why Germany lost – they spent so much of their resources doing research on weapons missing key factors that it ended up putting them behind. V2? Decent but without a nuclear warhead it wasn't more than an annoyance overall. Tiger II? Good gun, heavy armor and ate already limited gas at a horrific rate while being prone to bogging down when it wasn't getting the parts it wore out at a ferocious pace replaced. Oh and like the Soviet heavy tanks it had this little problem of not being able to hit much more than the broadside of a barn when on the move. All due to lacking the sort of gyroscopic stabilizers found on US-produced AFVs.

Oh and don't start that "the USSR won the war". Yes they may have killed more Germans total, but they also traded many more of their own soldiers for each German killed than the other Allied nations. So many in fact that pretty much the only way the Soviets could fill out the ranks of a unit was to merge them with even more depleted units. They were literally on their last gasp and that was with a hefty portion of the Germans forces tied up facing the Western Allies and those same nations throwing spanners into German war production via bombing and sabotage.

Wrong economy? Your 'Communist Capitalism" is molded on our system to a great extent. What has happened in our country has been by means of poor judgement and greed in our private sector it has nothing to do with our values as a country. Just give time and you will see a lot of your industrialists stealing and swindling due to their insatiable breed (its happening now anyways). Also, your country has not made as many wars because you have been very poor for many centuries. Now that China is bringing in the money, the Communist Party is spending like never before towards its military expansion. The only reason China is not making any military moves is due to the deterrence that the U.S. and the European industrialized nations bring. Otherwise the Chinese government would be very aggressively imposing its "view of the world" through the Communist eyes. Not to mention its increasing need of natural resources. They no different that the U.S. or any other country or empire throughout the millennia.

Funny, because while you claim to be have been around since 221 BC the PRC is only 63 years old. And the old China's history is rather dubious since China was regularly invaded and conquered by steppes tribes. Not to mention all the coupes and civil wars that keep cropping up because despite being so inbreed you still help but look down on each other. Considering that the USA has been around for over 200 years, never been successfully invaded, had only 1 civil war that was decisively ended, and did it all without a single violent change in government I would say we're doing much better.

Oh and for the record – while you slant-eyed barbarians were building walls that invaders simply went through because you were scared of new ideas, Westerners were creating concepts in mathematics, science, and philosophy that have lasted well over two-thousand years and heavily influenced every culture who has come into contact with them. And we built walls that actually held back the invades instead of barely being a speed-bump. Hadrian's wall might not be visible from space but considering the cost in terms of resources and lives, it was probably several orders of magnitude more effective in achieving its purpose.

That said, this is clearly an attempt by the US suppliers of airplanes to the US armed forces to make people not cut the military budget .. which is com,ing up in less than 2 months

Its ridiculous to think that whomever is pushing preservation of the military budget is releasing these photos. Come on. This is real, China is not playing around and simply making them for NASCAR purposes (as stated in the article) and we do need to be cautious of that. There are very much underlying tensions between China and USA. Furthermore, In a time when a "technology driven nation" is being promoted we must not forget where most of our most coveted technology has come from- the Department of Defense. I think that it is crucial that neither party forgets that.

To all of you spewing racial comments: We all have one world, destroy it and who wins?
The biggest threat to humanity is us. Our pride is blinding us to build bigger and more destructive weapons instead of looking to ways to live together. Countries spend lives & Billions/Trillions of dollars to support the best and most efficient way to kill and destroy. This will not stop as long as this continues to be a thriving business.
People need to recognize that the physical weapons are threats we understand, however, the real weapons of mass destruction will/is cyber war. What’s more effective, blowing up cities, or controlling the electrical grid, banking system, and internet/communication of a country?
Technology is like food, we need it; however, it can be good & bad. In the wrong mines, it’s destructive, and we’re seeing it development exponentially to create a darker world.
The only solution is to look to God for healing and begin the process of forgiveness, Unfortunately, Christianity and other faiths have been hijacked over the centuries by people who use it for personal gain. If we look at the true word of God, not man, we see that it is possible for all of us to live in harmony. The biggest obstacle is our blinding pride.

There's a difference between a region that wants to leave being forcibly held (Tibet) or make-believe held (Taiwan) versus a region where popular support is against secession. (Texas) The way in which these regions were also annexed in the first place, whether invasion (Tibet), "historic territory" (Taiwan), versus voluntary annexation (Texas) should also be considered.

China, constructs second rate products across the board. From toys to technology. That's not a bad thing just a fact. Your squad has done well over the past 100 years to raise to a level that deserves respect. But there is fact in human nature that "deceit stems from within". That means the reason you and most Chinese don't trust people is because you don't trust yourself.

I leave you with this...consumers from around the world were asked "what country do you trust to build safety equipment for your child" ....China was not even in the top 20. Your figure it out.

In my simplistic view of stealth capability, I would think that for fixed sites, that detection of objects in the sky could be easily detected by use of normal background radiation from fixed points in the cosmos. Just as the sun and moon rise in known positions, large and small radiation arrives from distant constant points. Why not passively monitor these known sources? Just as you see a fly on your television screen. You can view it as it blocks that portion, but you do not need to light it up? Just the thoughts of a working slob

The US has a flawed electoral system. Allow me to explain.

        1. Voting takes place on a WORKING day.

Chinese are known for not being able to think outside the box. They are civilization of copycats. They had gun powder for thousands of years before Europeans came, and we figured out, almost immediately, that it was a weapon capable of being used to rule the world. We then used it to enslave them only a few generations later. They are not innovative at all as a culture.

I wonder how much Romney and Adelson contributed to the Chinese Air Force??? O' my bad, I already asked that question!!! But get a load of this...earlier this year American billionaire Sheldon Adelson completed construction of his $4.4 billion Macau Empire in China, which is the world's sixth largest building and the largest resort, hotel and casino in the world. It took 25,000 Chinese workers to complete the project and it now employs over 35,000 Chinese workers. The project was delayed due to the 2008 recession and then delayed again when the Chinese government stepped in and said it ws against the hiring of foreign workers to complete the job. The massive complex opened earlier this year following a traditional Chinese dragon dance, high-wire tightrope performance and the unveiling of a 2,500 kilogram (5,500 pound) bronze and gold "God of Fortune" statue. The resort and casino complex is estimated to pump billions of dollars into the Chinese economy annually. Just imagine how many Americans such a complex would have employed and what it would have done to boost our economy. O' and by the way, a few months ago Mr. Adelson contributed one hundred million dollars to Mitt Romney's campaign. As they say, those who OUTSOURCE together flock together!

Romney has his faults, but do not give him so much credit as being the reason for any success in China. If he is that powerful, we all need to vote for him. The U.S. has so many companies that contribute to the Chinese job market and economy. To think that it is only those conservatives that take jobs overseas is an uneducated opinion. Sometime we get so caught up in politics that we think we need to make faults exclusive to the other candidate (on both sides).

We have equipment and capability that no one knows we have, including U.S. citizens. The military never ever tips their hand. In the end remember this, that one U.S. Submarine can strike every major city in Russia or China with enough nuclear destruction to make an armed conflict ridiculous. Because in the end they know and we know that we could end civilization for them as they now know it if it meant this country going down at the hands of communist power. The Chinese didnt design these things they stole them from us and try to simulate our manufacturing. They only want a modern military because for some odd reason they think its going to make them look and feel like a modern nation. The problem they have is the communist system of government doesn't work.I think its much to do about nothing. On a more serious note we need to stop borrowing money from them, quit letting them steal our technology, and we need to stop their unfair trade. Thats just another good reason to vote Romney.

USA has better pilots than China... and better planes. US pilots would outfly any Chinese pilot. The US has been building planes like this J-31 for many years. It is a new technology for China. By the time they figure out how to fly the J-31 well, the US will have more modern jet fighters that will outfly anything China builds. China just wants to copy the US jets. lol, those arnt very good stealth fighters, the wing configuration and overall design makes it still too large on radar.
China is simply trying to say they have state of the art stealth fighters, the tactic of releasing pics of an aircraft that doesnt do what it supposed to do is common place from china.

    November 3, 2012 at 10:12 am | Reply
    • newsintegrity

Since when does the shape of the aircraft matter with the use of "stealth" technologies? Radar cross-section is a matter of throwing a signal out there and receiving a bounce back based on reflection of that signal. US stealth technology (at least what is known) is based on absorbent materials that both absorb and dampen radar signals, but also the angle at which the signal his the body of the plane – hence why the F-117 looks funky as it does. Mostly part 1 has more to do with it these days than part 2 because we've learned over the years how to control the materials more with fabrication processing getting better as computer simulation of these materials have matured. Size doesn't matter in this case.

      • aerogeek

shape does have a very large effect on RCS. RAM (Radar Absorbant Materials) do play a large part too, though much more can be done by avoiding large surface areas perpendicular to lines of site. Look at B-2, x-35, and stealth fighters. They avoid large flat vertical surfaces. Looking at the profile picture of J20 I see big boxy structures which are not good for RCS

I wonder how much Romney and Adelson contributed to the Chinese Air Force??? During his luncheon with his rich friends in which he meligned 47% of us, Romney spoke passionately and emotionally about a Chinese factory Bain Capital bought when he was CEO. Then he went on to explain how his company hired 20,000 Chinese female workers and he became emotional when he started to describe the deplorable living conditions these women were subjected too. He stated that these women were crammed in an old make shift dormitory building where there were three women assigned to one bunker. Then he went on to describe how he and a team of Bain executives confronted the Chinese authorities and asked why there was a fence erected to keep the women confined. And after demanding answers to what appears to be a humanitarian situation, Romney said that the authorities at the factory said the fence wasn't to keep the workers in but were to keep outsiders off the premises as they would come on the compound looking for work. So just imagine Romney/Ryan and Scott Walker wants to strip American workers of their collective bargaining rights for better wages and decent working conditions, but Romney and his rich friends are concerned that Chinese workers don't have decent wages and collective bargaining rights. Unbelievable!

The communist had a saying that as been shown too be true. "A capitalist will sell you the rope, by which, you can hang him." China provided the slave labor and capitalist sold them the technology to be a military super power. This increased share values. The international corporatist, like the Koch Brothers, have no loyalty to America, Americans or America's future. With the growth of China, international corporations are no longer linked maintaining a strong American middle class. It doesn't matter who is elected. Jobs aren't returning so plan on being poorer and having less.

What you fail to take into account is the vast increase in productivity powered by numerically optimized machine tools, robots. America manufactures twice as many goods with 2/3 fewer workers than in the 1980's. The days of unskilled manufacturing are over. It would behoove our citizens to not just coast through school, but excel. There are jobs out there, but the skill sets required are different. An example would be the increase in foreign automotive companies manufacturing here. It's actually less expensive than shipping the finished product and there is tighter control/feedback over the production. American workers can do.

    Mattel, one USA company,
has designed the poisonous toys and let chinese companies make them.
Chinese producers made the products exactly according to its design.

Then USA medias have made propaganda that China made poisonous toys.

THen after the truth came, Mattel's CEO has apologized personally in Beijing.

going by your logic, you eat pork, which muslims do not, dont you agree they have superior culture?

Many companies invested in China 'cause its cheap labour and comsumer force. Chinese labour is becoming expensive; foreign companies will look for cheaper labour in other countries such as India, Vietnam, Philipine,...

Don't worry. If these jets are up to their usual "quality" standards they'll kill more of their own pilots than they will the enemy. Lead paint, defective electronics, I'll bet even the oxygen masks contain toxic materials.

Once they become operational, the jets will be on the ground undergoing more hours of maintenance than flight hours. Just the nature of stealth jets, especially for a Chinese designed one.

It appears that China has copied an airframe, and then added big canards which really limit top speed, and supercruise efficiency. In some ways it is good to see that China is so far behind on avionics, and engine technology. China is wasting money on manned aircraft while the US is 20 years more advanced in robotic drones. The F-35 and F-22 jets are not publicity stunt photos, they are operational aircraft you can buy today.

China has one medium carrier with a ski jump launch system that requires STOL aircraft (a retro-fitted cast off from the former USSR). It will take them 5-10 years to build their first catapult-launch medium carrier. The US has 11 super carriers (out of 11 in the world). Super carriers are double the size and capability of medium carriers. The new Ford class super carriers will begin to phase into the US Navy in 2015. These ships will be able to outperform our current super carriers by ~20% as far as sortie rates. In addition, they will be equipped with directed energy weapons and other next generation systems that our friends across the pacific have not wrapped their heads around.

Is China on the rise? Yes. Will China dominate the US any time soon? No.

So, they'll be ready just in time for America's drone fleet, which will knock out their carrier as well as airbases. And that's if the Chinese peasants don't rise up in rebellion first due to the uncontrolled, widening gap between rich and poor in that country.

Debt (and money in general) is just a figurative value we humans denoted for an exchange of services. Sooner or later when production starts retreating back overseas as a cyclical economy does, these services will be levied.

Jeng, China hold less than 8% of US government debt and another 3-4 % is held by other foreign countries. Of the total (~15 trillion dollars) of US debt , 88% is held by the good people of the United states of America. And China may consider itself a economic superstar right now but know that it is almost exclusively reliant on US trade and even then it has manipulated its currency to unfairly dominate the market. Hardly a comparison to the US actually. Good news is this cannot last for ever. China is going to be forced to play by international trade rules or threatened with sanctions. And you don't want 1.3 billion people rising in revolution against their ruling class. So China is heading for the Big Shrink in its economy – think of it as a "correction" after a "bubble". Additionally, we have 11 aircraft carriers, China has one. China has 2 prototype stealth aircraft, we have 20 operational stealth bombers and nearly 200 stealth fighters. For a culture which barely grasps the basics of driving a motor vehicle, it's almost laughable to think of a squad of Chinese fighter pilots flying anything supersonic, let alone stealth fighters.

All an opposing force will have to do is wait for the Chinese, flying barely above stall speed, to crash into each other as the pilots jockey for the fast lane.

A family friend who used to work with Air Force Intelligence back in the 70s described chinese pilots as thus:
        "They die well".
They would fly to max height, fire their missiles at max range, then their engines would stall and the jet would plummet into the ocean, when they attempted to shoot down SR-71s. And the missiles would miss anyway.

Really China? Can't you invent something on your own instead of stealing other nation's Intellectual Property?

Then why is your country stealing Chinese intellectual property? Paper, gunpowder, the compass, lacquer, bank notes, kites, playing cards, and many other things are Chinese inventions. The things I listed were all invented before the first European walked on American soil. You hadn't then yet come up with the legal concept of "intellectual property" that you invented to protect YOUR inventions – legal concepts that you now try to force on China.

You don't support the concept of IP so your further comments on the matter are irrelevant.

Why are Chinese shamelessly taking on Western sounding names and defending CHina? Lars you aren't American you're a Chinese communist. Why would we listen to our worst enemies? China's 4 big inventions were thousands of years ago. China has done nothing in 100 years and this is fact.

bacos, you silly! Do you REALLY think that Chinese take on western sounding names to defend China? I seriously doubt that are ANY Chinese do so. I am from northern Europe. Of course I support intellectual property rights, but sometimes I just get disgusted about all the anti-Chinese sentiments in the U.S. and the level of ignorance floating around. The world isn't black or white, "good" or "evil". Yes, there are problems in China, but on the balance, China is good for the western world, and Chinese are good people. Don't take my word for it, just spend some extended time in China, and you will know what I am talking about!

        So many fallacies.
No one knows who invented gunpowder. In fact its entirely possible that the alchemists in Europe developed it independently just like they did Greek Fire and a host of other compounds. It just happens that China has the oldest SURVIVING written record to date. Bank notes? The Chinese were also using silver (and not even silver coins) at the same time and recorded the value in pieces of silver. Besides which, it's not WHAT the money is made from that is important but what the money represents and that concept is far far older than China – in fact it's as old as the concept of buying and selling goods. Compass? You do realize that the properties of lodestone have been known for oh... at least as far back at the Ancient Greeks right? Who is to say that the Chinese didn't steal the concept from someone else and just put their name on it. All those others are the same sort of situation – just because the Chinese CLAIM to have invented it first doesn't mean they actually did. They just had the luck to have a written record of their claim survive while the other records were destroyed by invading tribes migrating.

My money says still a Chinese but one who pays enough attention to his spelling and grammar to come off as European. Well that or one of the far-left extremists who his countrymen laugh at every time he opens his mouth trying to make himself look better by defending one of the worst violators of the very principles it claims to embrace. Either way – can we please get an ignore feature CNN?

Is this a copy issue again? It sounds like everything from China is copied from someone. How about yourself. You have the same facial organs as other individuals. So that means your father made you by copying from others?

If you are really good and do not want to copy from others, why do not you go back hundreds of years to re-make the gun powder, paper etc that you copied from China in the first place?

Gunpowder was discovered, more than invented. I t was the presence of three naturally occurring chemicals that were highly flammable. There was no engineering, nor planning, nor developing. It was simply found when randomly mixing things together and burning them.

      • that is it

That will do it. That is what patents/intellectual properties mean, which include new combinations of existing items. And how about other ancient inventions copied over besides gunpowder, why you do not talk about? Summing these up and translate into dollar amount and interests, perhaps a big part of west should not be owned by itself. If you do not know these, learn first before you speak.

Expecting people to believe in China's military technology when they can't even get baby milk correct is asking for the sun and the moon. How many paper maché missiles did they lend to North Korea for their parades you think? And this stealth plane? If flies surely. It will probably fly apart if put to the test in battle too.
