New pictures show second Chinese stealth fighter being test flown
WASHINGTON (CNN) - CNN has obtained detailed photographs of a new stealth fighter being tested in China.
It is the second such stealth fighter China has tested in as many years and appears destined to become the communist nation's future aircraft carrier-based fighter jet, according to weapons analysts.
The plane, dubbed by outsiders as the J-31, was test flown Tuesday in Shenyang. According to the analysts, the two photographs obtained by CNN appear to have been leaked by officials in China.

"It has to be an official photographer because nobody else can get that close to the airplane," said John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org. "These are all publicity photos from the factory, and I could not imagine that the factory would publicize these things without somebody higher up in the food chain authorizing it."
Richard Fisher, a senior fellow in Asian military affairs at the International Assessment and Strategy Center (IASC), agrees these are not pictures sent out surreptitiously by some Chinese aviation aficionado. "The Internet censors are controlling this process, have no doubt that."
But Fisher said the reason for the release may not be as threatening as some might imagine.
"It's being done in a way to help promote pro-military nationalism in China. There's just a huge, large audience in China for this kind of information. It's kind of like NASCAR."
No matter who let the pictures go public, they won't answer all the questions surrounding China's fighter program. "They don't want to reveal anything that's truly useful to a foreign military or intelligence service," Fisher said.
In January 2011, China tested the J-20, a fighter jet with stealth characteristics, much like the American F-22.

Fisher said the J-31 appears be a lighter fighter jet similar to the American F-35.
"The J-20 is the heavy stealth fighter, (The J-31) is going to be the medium-weight stealth fighter. It's very much in the same vein as the F-22 versus the F-35, with the Raptor, the F-22 being the heavy fifth-generation fighter for the U.S. Air Force versus the medium-weight F-35."
Pike said that could be the case, but it may be that China is test flying both prototypes and will choose just one to put into production.
While these are both fifth-generation fighter jets, that doesn't put them on par with America's two newest fighters.
For example, Pike said China's jet engines just don't come close to American engines. "This is a sucking chest wound of Chinese military aviation."
Pike said the primary Chinese military jet engine is based on an American design. "We started development of this engine back in the '60s. Then they commercialized it in the 1970s. Then the Chinese got a hold of it 20 years ago and it's still no good. It's a half century-old design that they've been working on for two decades, and it's still no good."
Fisher has a higher opinion of that engine. "It's not entirely true that China is currently facing massive problems. They've actually had some measure of success."
And Fisher said China appears to be developing a brand new engine for the J-31. "The engines that will likely power the J-31 we do know a bit more about. Those engines were actually revealed at the Zhuhai show in 2008," Fisher said referring to an annual China air show. He believes the new J-31 engine is undergoing preliminary testing.
Another problem is the stealth characteristics of the plane.
The J-31 is designed to have a stealthy shape. "From the side profile, it really looks like a 75% (scale) F-22 from the bottom, and the top profile it very much looks like an F-35."
The J-31 may have the stealth coatings that help it absorb radar signals instead of letting them bounce off and give away its position.
But Pike explained the plane has wide seams where different parts of the plane come together. "The seams form something the radar can bounce off of. I'm looking at some close-ups of the J-31 and it's seamy. It's got all kinds of seams and ripples on the skin."
Fisher agreed. "Yes, that's definitely a fair assessment, but what we can say is that it will have a definite low-observable capability, that's for sure."
While it may start out as a land-based fighter, Pike and Fisher both said it could become China's carrier-based fighter jet when the nation builds a second, catapult-based carrier. Their first carrier, currently undergoing sea tests, uses a ski-jump style flight deck to launch planes.
So should America start worrying about these new fighters ?
"Who else do you think these airplanes were designed to fight?" Pike said. "If the Chinese think that their military is a lot stronger than anybody else in the neighborhood, then they're going to throw their weight around."
Pike estimated the J-31 might become a threat in 2027. "You would expect to see the Chinese stealth fighter enter operational service, I don't know, 15 years from now."
Fisher is predicting much sooner.
"My estimate is that the J-31 will start entering squadron service in four to five years."

I'm an American who was born in Vietnam. I say to you that Vietnam has good food, some nice scenery, so so art and poetry, but can't hold a candle to Western technology or musical innovation. Except as a theoretical concept, the idea that authoritarian states cannot compete is nonsence. Look a German Tiger tank or the T-34 or IV Stalin II tank vs an US WWII tank. Russians have produced a significant number of excellent weapons: AK-47 to the AN-94, S-400 ABM system, SS-18 ICBM, nerve gas, rugged vehicles, quad 23mm anti-aircraft system. thermobarics, RPG-29, AT-14 & 15 anti-tank missiles are excellent.

Tiger II and Stalin tanks were hardly "game changers". In fact they were some of the first "hangar queens" because they were too heavy – they wore out parts too fast, burned up more fuel to go shorter distances, and got bogged down if the ground wasn't dry. Its those reasons, among others, why the US never fielded heavy tank designs (even though many were in development) other than the Pershing which was more of a medium/ heavy. Plus that idea ignores something that was at the core of why Germany lost – they spent so much of their resources doing research on weapons missing key factors that it ended up putting them behind. V2? Decent but without a nuclear warhead it wasn't more than an annoyance overall. Tiger II? Good gun, heavy armor and ate already limited gas at a horrific rate while being prone to bogging down when it wasn't getting the parts it wore out at a ferocious pace replaced. Oh and like the Soviet heavy tanks it had this little problem of not being able to hit much more than the broadside of a barn when on the move. All due to lacking the sort of gyroscopic stabilizers found on US-produced AFVs.
Oh and don't start that "the USSR won the war". Yes they may have killed more Germans total, but they also traded many more of their own soldiers for each German killed than the other Allied nations. So many in fact that pretty much the only way the Soviets could fill out the ranks of a unit was to merge them with even more depleted units. They were literally on their last gasp and that was with a hefty portion of the Germans forces tied up facing the Western Allies and those same nations throwing spanners into German war production via bombing and sabotage.
Lame - at least leak some photos that prove you can pull up the landing gear..... Obviously, they have not figured out how to do that..... no worries because its not a threat to anyone.... until it crashes.

Oh and for the record – while you slant-eyed barbarians were building walls that invaders simply went through because you were scared of new ideas, Westerners were creating concepts in mathematics, science, and philosophy that have lasted well over two-thousand years and heavily influenced every culture who has come into contact with them. And we built walls that actually held back the invades instead of barely being a speed-bump. Hadrian's wall might not be visible from space but considering the cost in terms of resources and lives, it was probably several orders of magnitude more effective in achieving its purpose.

There are very much underlying tensions between China and USA. Furthermore, In a time when a "technology driven nation" is being promoted we must not forget where most of our most coveted technology has come from- the Department of Defense. I think that it is crucial that neither party forgets that.

If you read the article you would notice that the J-31 is not even close to being as good as our F-22 or F-35. The engines are way old, from technology your country ripped off. I swear, all the Chinese/Russians/Communists can do is rip off other nations technology. Innovation comes from the West, China has a lot of ground to make up. J-31 supplements the J-20 strike fighters. J-31 replaces J-10 (F-16 equivalent). J-20 replaces J-11 (F-15 equivalent).

(Texas) The way in which these regions were also annexed in the first place, whether invasion (Tibet), "historic territory" (Taiwan), versus voluntary annexation (Texas) should also be considered.

In my simplistic view of stealth capability, I would think that for fixed sites, that detection of objects in the sky could be easily detected by use of normal background radiation from fixed points in the cosmos. Just as the sun and moon rise in known positions, large and small radiation arrives from distant constant points. Why not passively monitor these known sources? Just as you see a fly on your television screen. You can view it as it blocks that portion, but you do not need to light it up? Just the thoughts of a working slob

Since when does the shape of the aircraft matter with the use of "stealth" technologies? Radar cross-section is a matter of throwing a signal out there and receiving a bounce back based on reflection of that signal. US stealth technology (at least what is known) is based on absorbent materials that both absorb and dampen radar signals, but also the angle at which the signal his the body of the plane – hence why the F-117 looks funky as it does. Mostly part 1 has more to do with it these days than part 2 because we've learned over the years how to control the materials more with fabrication processing getting better as computer simulation of these materials have matured. Size doesn't matter in this case.
shape does have a very large effect on RCS. RAM (Radar Absorbant Materials) do play a large part too, though much more can be done by avoiding large surface areas perpendicular to lines of site. Look at B-2, x-35, and stealth fighters. They avoid large flat vertical surfaces. Looking at the profile picture of J20 I see big boxy structures which are not good for RCS

What you fail to take into account is the vast increase in productivity powered by numerically optimized machine tools, robots. America manufactures twice as many goods with 2/3 fewer workers than in the 1980's. The days of unskilled manufacturing are over. It would behoove our citizens to not just coast through school, but excel. There are jobs out there, but the skill sets required are different. An example would be the increase in foreign automotive companies manufacturing here. It's actually less expensive than shipping the finished product and there is tighter control/feedback over the production. American workers can do.

Don't worry. If these jets are up to their usual "quality" standards they'll kill more of their own pilots than they will the enemy. Lead paint, defective electronics, I'll bet even the oxygen masks contain toxic materials.

China has one medium carrier with a ski jump launch system that requires STOL aircraft (a retro-fitted cast off from the former USSR). It will take them 5-10 years to build their first catapult-launch medium carrier. The US has 11 super carriers (out of 11 in the world). Super carriers are double the size and capability of medium carriers. The new Ford class super carriers will begin to phase into the US Navy in 2015. In the 70's 80s the Russians made planes that 'looked like' the American F-15, then our best air-to-air fighter(still is by record). However, when they flew against actual American hardware over Lebanon flown by Israelis and then over Iraq flown by Americans they were swept from the skies.
may I remind you that airplane is just a machine and really...the pilots are more important...Arabian pilots do not have the same amount of training compared with the Israelis colleagues. Also, don't forget the dramatic boost from those E-4s

You can't be serious. The US has twice the air assets that China does. China has nearly 1700 combat aircraft. We have nearly 1000 just on our carriers, and thousands more land based. Additionally, we have 11 aircraft carriers, China has one. China has 2 prototype stealth aircraft, we have 20 operational stealth bombers and nearly 200 stealth fighters. China has a LOT of catching up to do.
You are correct withoutgod. People think China will just crank out 200 jets in a month. This is impossible. A single F35 takes half a year to build, and that is Lockheed who knows how to do this... These are not cheap TV's, these are the most advanced devices ever built.
For a culture which barely grasps the basics of driving a motor vehicle, it's almost laughable to think of a squad of Chinese fighter pilots flying anything supersonic, let alone stealth fighters.
All an opposing force will have to do is wait for the Chinese, flying barely above stall speed, to crash into each other as the pilots jockey for the fast lane.
A family friend who used to work with Air Force Intelligence back in the 70s described chinese pilots as thus:

No one knows who invented gunpowder. In fact its entirely possible that the alchemists in Europe developed it independently just like they did Greek Fire and a host of other compounds. Gunpowder was discovered,more than invented. I t was the presence of three naturally occurring chemicals that were highly flammable. There was no engineering, nor planning, nor developing. It was simply found when randomly mixing things together and burning them.

And how about other ancient inventions copied over besides gunpowder, why you do not talk about?
