New pictures show second Chinese stealth fighter being test flown

WASHINGTON (CNN) - CNN has obtained detailed photographs of a new stealth fighter being tested in China.

It is the second such stealth fighter China has tested in as many years and appears destined to become the communist nation's future aircraft carrier-based fighter jet, according to weapons analysts.

The plane, dubbed by outsiders as the J-31, was test flown Tuesday in Shenyang. According to the analysts, the two photographs obtained by CNN appear to have been leaked by officials in China.

"It has to be an official photographer because nobody else can get that close to the airplane," said John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org. "These are all publicity photos from the factory, and I could not imagine that the factory would publicize these things without somebody higher up in the food chain authorizing it."

Richard Fisher, a senior fellow in Asian military affairs at the International Assessment and Strategy Center (IASC), agrees these are not pictures sent out surreptitiously by some Chinese aviation aficionado. "The Internet censors are controlling this process, have no doubt that."

But Fisher said the reason for the release may not be as threatening as some might imagine.

"It's being done in a way to help promote pro-military nationalism in China. There's just a huge, large audience in China for this kind of information. It's kind of like NASCAR."

No matter who let the pictures go public, they won't answer all the questions surrounding China's fighter program. "They don't want to reveal anything that's truly useful to a foreign military or intelligence service," Fisher said.

In January 2011, China tested the J-20, a fighter jet with stealth characteristics, much like the American F-22.

J-20 Chinese fighter jet. (Photo from IHS/Janes)

Fisher said the J-31 appears be a lighter fighter jet similar to the American F-35.

"The J-20 is the heavy stealth fighter, (The J-31) is going to be the medium-weight stealth fighter. It's very much in the same vein as the F-22 versus the F-35, with the Raptor, the F-22 being the heavy fifth-generation fighter for the U.S. Air Force versus the medium-weight F-35."

Pike said that could be the case, but it may be that China is test flying both prototypes and will choose just one to put into production.

While these are both fifth-generation fighter jets, that doesn't put them on par with America's two newest fighters.

For example, Pike said China's jet engines just don't come close to American engines. "This is a sucking chest wound of Chinese military aviation."

Pike said the primary Chinese military jet engine is based on an American design. "We started development of this engine back in the '60s. Then they commercialized it in the 1970s. Then the Chinese got a hold of it 20 years ago and it's still no good. It's a half century-old design that they've been working on for two decades, and it's still no good."

Fisher has a higher opinion of that engine. "It's not entirely true that China is currently facing massive problems. They've actually had some measure of success."

And Fisher said China appears to be developing a brand new engine for the J-31. "The engines that will likely power the J-31 we do know a bit more about. Those engines were actually revealed at the Zhuhai show in 2008," Fisher said referring to an annual China air show. He believes the new J-31 engine is undergoing preliminary testing.

Another problem is the stealth characteristics of the plane.

The J-31 is designed to have a stealthy shape. "From the side profile, it really looks like a 75% (scale) F-22 from the bottom, and the top profile it very much looks like an F-35."

The J-31 may have the stealth coatings that help it absorb radar signals instead of letting them bounce off and give away its position.

But Pike explained the plane has wide seams where different parts of the plane come together. "The seams form something the radar can bounce off of. I'm looking at some close-ups of the J-31 and it's seamy. It's got all kinds of seams and ripples on the skin."

Fisher agreed. "Yes, that's definitely a fair assessment, but what we can say is that it will have a definite low-observable capability, that's for sure."

While it may start out as a land-based fighter, Pike and Fisher both said it could become China's carrier-based fighter jet when the nation builds a second, catapult-based carrier. Their first carrier, currently undergoing sea tests, uses a ski-jump style flight deck to launch planes.

So should America start worrying about these new fighters ?

"Who else do you think these airplanes were designed to fight?" Pike said. "If the Chinese think that their military is a lot stronger than anybody else in the neighborhood, then they're going to throw their weight around."

Pike estimated the J-31 might become a threat in 2027. "You would expect to see the Chinese stealth fighter enter operational service, I don't know, 15 years from now."

Fisher is predicting much sooner.

"My estimate is that the J-31 will start entering squadron service in four to five years."

If Obama is president, ALL US companies must get out of CHina, if they did not, China will burn them all down.

If Romney is presdent, ALL US people must get out of China, if they did not, China will through them all into US concentration camps.

This is truth and China will really do this.

    Remember that:

Hollywood/Media: if USA does not have this, they will not make lies to invade into iraq and Serbia.
    They never apologize.
Beat them and not let them make lies and propaganda!

Weapon industry: make J31 and J20 to beat F22 and F35, make more nukkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk bombs and missles.

IT: Baidu beats Google in China.
Alibaba is the world biggest platform.
Huawei is the world biggest iT provider.

    This is just the beginning.

China's goal is to beat USA, and methods is to beat them in theses areas.

CHina will use all of its strength to reach this goal through hard working and union with Russia.

China's goal is not to "beat" the United States. China's goal is to avoid regime change. Over the last decade the Chinese people have come to expect an unsustainable economic growth rate. Part of the leadership's strategy is to appeal to Chinese nationalism. This stealth plane is probably 90% for domestic placation and 10% for planned combat.

Please take off the tinfoil hat and try to understand the rest of the world isn't out to get you.

"...become the communist nation's future..." To call China "communist" is just dumb. China gradually left communism after Mao's death and is today and flourishing capitalist nation. China being a dictatorship doesn't make it more "communist" than Nazi Germany under Hitler. The article writer Larry Shaughnessy doesn't seem to have much of a clue what communism means. North Korea is communist. Cuba is still for the most part communist. China is anything but communist, regardless of what the party calls itself.

to say they are not communist is dumb. sharing wealth is only part of the communist story, and is rarely if ever truly implemented. more important is their approach to governance and democracy (or lack of) that makes them communist. Instead of a dictator they have a panel of dictatorship. they are communists.

Communist or capitalist does not matter that much. China never was so scared by capitalism in the past, or by communist now.

But the western capitalists have been scared to death by communist all way along.

      Why? interesting.

How many of our problems can we solve when we are collectively stronger and more intelligent as a species? How about 100% electric cars that go 500 miles per charge? Solar energy that cut Middle East oiil dependency to a mere 10% (reserved for world's militaries only)? Organic high yield-to-cost ratio farming? Nano technology courses as a pre-cursor to higher education?

This world can do WITHOUT religion fanaticism, famed exports of the Middle East. We can cooperate.

      • Gohper

The problem is nobody is buying the little electric cars - even with the massive government tax subsidies to which you and I contribute generously from our paychecks. And wind power costs $20 bucks per kilowatt hour, compared to pennies for coal generated electricity.

        November 3, 2012 at 6:21 am |
      • silent observer

Because none of the model is able to go 500 miles per charge. Because power-to-cost ratio is low for renewable energy, because.... Generally, our current technology is nowhere near advanced enough for a sustainable living into the future. We have lots to do and to work together!

        November 3, 2012 at 6:40 am |
      • Adam

Then we can all come together by the campfire and sing Kum-by-yah. Get real. Every time an electric car is introduced it is ridiculed. Even if a car did get 500 miles do you think people are going to charge the car before the battery runs out? Look up in NY and NJ they had a week before the storm hit they still were not ready.

One big characteristic I see is the lack of "stealthy" jet exhaust such as that of the F-22 and the F-117. Also, the F-22 can vector its exhaust for maneuvering. The Chinese plane appears to have conventional exhaust like that found on the F-15 Eagle.

You think this is an actual photo of China's stealth fighter? Dude, the real plane is locked up tighter than Area 51, and this photo was published exactly so American military planners can spot its "weaknesses" and plan their detection methods accordingly. Remember we didn't admit the existence of the U-2 until the SR-71 had already replaced it, and we didn't admit the SR-71 until the UAV drones had taken its place. No military ever reveals its current capabilities.

I'm serious when I say that the US should form underground clubs that monitor the activities of Chinese nationals in the US. These people should be terrified to come here and steal our technology, or try to learn how to sabotage us in some other ways. Instead they are greeted with smiles that assume that these backwards creeps are just like us, or even think like us.

Political correctness is no longer a joke. It's a recipe for disaster. China is counting on us to continue our passive approach towards them. It's the only way their plans will work. We have the abillty to stop them. We just need the will to do it. We need to turn our back on those who are lulled to sleep by the dragon and take care of this menace ourselves. It's time to organize, underground resistance to China's intentions. Otherwise we'll be organizing underground resistance to China as it occupies the free world. Better now than later.

bacos, you are really clue-less. America is full of people of Chinese descent who do wonders for the U.S. Right here on CNN today, I clicked on a link to an article about a researcher or professor from Stanford University talking about how they are developing solar panels made from carbon. While she speaks English, and may be an American citizen, I can tell from her accent and looks that she is Chinese, and not born in the U.S. The U.S. is a country made-up of immigrants. They ARE the U.S.! Unless you are a native American, you are either an immigrant yourself, or a descendent of immigrants. How about keeping an eye on you too, being ready to send you back to wherever you or your grandparents came from? It is foolish to be paranoid about Chinese. China is not a nation hostile to the U.S., so what really is the problem? China is a business partner and friend of the western world. Where does this American paranoia come from?

I am European, but please feel free to fantasize about me being Chinese, or a Chinese agent. That would fit right in with the sentiments I am trying to describe here.

One common ground most of the comments posted here: they all sound juvenille and overwhelmingly enthnocentric.

Both America and China need more people with intelligence who can analyze objectively without sounding like rednecks/yellow fever from the woods.

Something Americans should know about most Chinese: Most Chinese are not Communist. When common Chinese folks stand up to speak for China, they are speaking on behalf of their nation (NOT government), their culture, and their people. If you want to understand why Chinese feel the way about China now, a comprehensive understanding of Chinese history and its development is essential. Even if China is no longer a Communist state today, China will still compete with America militarily, with an even higher intensity and energy. Why? Because this thing about US vs China or vice versa is more cultural than it is political.

For the Chinese, please do understand Americans today are seeing the age of American unilateralism beginning its diminishing course. So, if both sides can be sympathetic and respectful, this world is really big enough for two or even four to five superpowers to prosper TOGETHER

Technologies in human history has always been shared and copied, through trade, espionage, or other means. Nothing wrong.

No I strongly disagree. Intellectualism when dealing with China got us into this mess. Intellectualism assumes that all sides are negotiating in good faith, and have empathy for their fellow human being. Intellectualism fails when dealing with Muslims and countries like China. China will smile in your face while it stabs at your back. Your reason and virtue are useless to you, and useful to them. China's mentality is backwards, and somewhat uncivilized. But they are quite willing to fool us into thinking they are like us and can appreciate a good handshake and respect for their fellow man. To them it's just a game to fool us. Anyway, I know you're just one of their agents trying to disarm us. Tribalism cannot be fought with logic. It has to be fought with tribalism. We can go back to our enlightened state when this threat is out of the way. Ask the enlightened people of China how much it helped them. You can't, because they are either dead or wish they were in a some gulag somewhere..

We have something in common. I supposed we both despise religion fanaticism. One thing I feel strongly though, bacos, is that the major governments in the world should work hands in hands to contain Islamic fanaticism that is on the spread. This threat is far greater than mere ideological or cultural conflicts between the West and the East.

I strongly disagree with you when I feel you already had a predetermined lenses of looking at yourself and the Chinese. I do not adore Communism, but the lack of civility of the Chinese, I agree, only because I also understand this is a result of Mao's failed Great Leap and Cultural Revolution. Chinese civility has A LOT to do with that part of their history. If you are willing to learn more about them you will find them looking more familiar to you: an equal human being. Also referring to historic evidence, when China was great, she was top of the world. When foolishness took over China it sunk as deep as the backwardness you rightfully mentioned. Give them some time. I believe Communism in China is almost over. Also do understand the concept of "time" in Eastern culture is vastly different than in the West. You might expect change in 5 years, but they look at change in at least 10.

Also, remember Chinese and Americans fought together in WW2?

Already the US is countering China by sharing some of the technology that China stole from us, with India. Their own regional rival (who has never so much as even given them a hard time). The US is doing technology transfers with India, and there are plans on joint weapons development. This is in the news on other websites. I wonder why CNN does not show it. Does China's money power have influence on CNN? It doesn't matter. The US outmatches China, yet we don't rely on that alone. We have a strong alliance of freedom loving people around the world. They aren't going to let China go on a bloody rampage without ensuring they will get something equal or worse in return.

To us you're just cheap labor, easily replaced by Brazil, Maylaysia, etc. I guess you have to believe that assembling parts makes you powerful.. here's something you might not like.. all that assembling you are doing used to be done in so called "lesser" asian nations. You are like cheap labor to them.

USA has better pilots than China... and better planes. US pilots would outfly any Chinese pilot. The US has been building planes like this J-31 for many years. It is a new technology for China. By the time they figure out how to fly the J-31 well, the US will have more modern jet fighters that will outfly anything China builds. China just wants to copy the US jets. Anyone who knows about planes and pilots will already know this...

Yes, China means Chinese fighters copy the technology of F22.
China is proud and will continue to copy F22 till J31 is far better than F22.

    You bite China?

China will copy everything of USA.

If USA just still has sth to be copied.

So pretty much it is just a stolen US F-22 raptor body variant without the real stealth technology or the interconnected joint strike fighter computer system. So technically all it is an expensive replica of a US 5th generation fighter without the brains, stealth, or firepower capabilities. Hacking only gets you so far these days, China.

hahahahahahaha LOL! You're kidding right?! America has the most patriotic men in the military in the world?! Let me tell you what I have noticed from people who I know who joined the US military. I know people who joined the military in high school who wouldnt even stand up in the morning to say the pledge of allegiance. I know people who have joined the military to just get the benefits of the GI bill so they can go to college. I know of people who have joined the military for just the benefits and because they werent doing nothing with their lives so mom and pops forced them in enlist or be on the streets. Don't get me wrong there are a few who join to be the few and the proud, but that is a very small fraction of people. Get your facts straight. Oh and I know people who are in the military as of right now who are smoking weed like crazy and dont take their job in the military seriously. The few and the proud LOL

You lack the capability to design complex modern weapons from the ground up without "borrowing" technology from abroad. You're a second rate regional power with big dreams but you've got about fifty years of work ahead of you. Better get started.

It's time that the US got rid of it's Politically Correct intentions when dealing with Chinese nationals in the US. While our intentions are 21st century, last century Chinese will use it against us like a weapon. So we have to stoop to their level, in a sense, to get them out of our country and keep them out of our technology. The US should immediately and indiscriminately fire any Chinese nationals in US corporations. Or children of Chinese nationals from corporations. In fact, even two generations of Chinese Americans should be heavily screened before having jobs like this in the US. They have no business working in our high tech industries. They can go to China and reverse engineer crap there if their heart is set on it. We have plenty of smart people from Americans and other nationalities to take their place, before some idiot talks about how we need their skills. The Chinese come here for one reason, to rip us off and take our spoils back to their screwed up homeland. We should not be shy when dealing with them.

Can you imagine a Chinese defense contractor hiring Americans? Sounds absurd doesn't it? Wouldn't that make them racist? Hell if they care, and I say we do the same. Kick these Chinese out.

So, if both sides can be sympathetic and respectful, this world is really big enough for two or even four to five superpowers to prosper TOGETHER.

This isn't an F-22 clone, its an F-35 clone. The F-35 had its first test flight 2006. To get an aircraft like this flying takes at least 8 years. That means while Bush was invading Iraq, his defence company mates were selling the designs to the Chinese after US tax payers spent almost a trillion US dollars on the F-35 program. China gets the plans and the US tax payer foots the bill. Enough said?

They should use the money to feed their people and not wasting it on machines with fake parts. The picture looks great but who will want to fly a plane that is made with fake motor cycle's engine? China will never be militarily strong as long as what they do is steal intellectual property. My message to China is to cool down and never think about going to war with the West. Anyone can assemble flying objects with tomato cans and dirt bike engines which is what this plane is.

They're still perfecting their espionage tactics including how to break into military computers so that they can basically steal all our technology for free. After all everything we buy in the US, including network cards, contain chips made in china. So it makes it relatively easy to steal technology. -lol-

You may be surprised to learn that military networks are indeed built largely from components that come out of the same factories in China that produce the Walmart computers you referenced. This includes classified networks, and it's been a "known issue" under active discussion in security circles for quite some time.

I'm not sure on that one. When I was in the military most of the computers we had weren't from Walmart. They all had a logo saying "Great Wall". Do you think............

They're not for fighting America. China has no interest in that just yet. They're for taking over neighboring countries, starting with Taiwan. China will be strong enough that the world will do nothing about it. Why was Korea split in half? Why did the U.S. lose Vietnam? In each case it's because the U.S. did not want to go up against China. And that was a long time ago, when China was much weaker. The U.S. will be the last country China fights against.

Man you are ignorant. Chinks didnt even want South Korea. North Korea tryed to unite the two Koreas into one and be one big communist korea. North was winning and then the US came in and started fighting the North far back into their land and North almost lost their side of Korea and when this almost happened China came in and supported North Korea and sent waves and waves of Chinese soldiers fighting along side North Korean soldiers and pushed the Americans and South Koreans back into South Korean territory in a few weeks and that is when the Chinese wasnt even as powerful as they are now. All of you who keep talking smack about China and talking about you aint scared of the Chinks and blah blah blah. Well I hope you put your money where your mouth is because the US and China will eventually fight each other and if Americans thought the Vietnam war was bad then Americans don't even want a glimpse of the Chinese American War. Plus if America goes against China you better believe that Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria, India and all the terriorist groups will be right along side of China. America doesnt want this war to happen. It will either mean the end of America or the end of man kind as we know it.

The United States has the highest amount of Military equipment in the world. (Jets, tanks, boats, ships etc) We are also the most heavily equipt. The US is not getting information that is classified released. Even about tech. Do you think they would do that? If they did we would know all of the so called UFO plans they have and even higher tech stuff not even built yet. FOr an example, Since 9/11 their hasent been a terrorist attack, A successful attack yet in new york. Why? Because they upped security, and created a special task force that deals with just terrorism. I dont know why you think they are getting high tech information released. If they are big whoop. Its 2012 in the year 2050 our knowledge of Biotechnology and weapons will have more than doubled. People are going to get information somehow about the US just like we do from other countries.

You live in fantasy land. You have outsourced your defence industry to private companies who don't give a hoot about US security, they just want to make money. As a result, your technology is getting leaked/sold/stolen by anyone and everyone. But pay your taxes, keep handing that money to Lockheed so they can give the technology you pay for to China.

        November 3, 2012 at 4:11 am |
      • DickPerry

There hasn't been a terrorist attack simply because there isn't any needed. When they need to do a new attack there will be one. It doesn't matter though. Terrorists has never managed to kill any bigger amount of people at one time. The most so far is around 2800 which is less kills than US traffic manages in a month or US citizens manage to kill with guns in 4 months. So fear of terrorists is like being afraid of bees. Its a irrational fear that is used by politicians to remove rights/freedoms from people all over the world, especially in USA. No other western country has allowed its government to kill its citizens or detain them indefinite without a court involved.

For the engineer who was on here before talking about restrictions to design options due to certain laws of physics and structural design needed when creating a stealth aircraft. I think you should look at this link and then tell me if it was not easy for the Chinese to copy the F-35's design.:

    http://image (dot) baidu (dot) com/i?ct=503316480&z=&tn=baiduimagedetail&word=f-35&ie=utf-8&in=25592%20%20%20%20%20&cl=2&lm=-1&st=&pn=13&rn=1&di=196985296001&ln=1971&fr=&fm=&fmq=1351918166055_R&ic=&s=&se=&sme=0&tab=&width=&height=&face=&is=&istype=#pn19&-1&di220069593001&objURLhttp%3A%2F%2Fnews.kantsuu.com%2FUploadFiles%2F200912%2F20091206103242753.jpg&fromURLhttp%3A%2F%2Fnews.kantsuu.com%2F200912%2F20091206103208_166754.shtml&W1600&H917&T7647&S230&TPjpg

If you cannot copy and past the link. Just go to Baidu.com and in the search engine type in F-35. Then click 图 片 and look for the schematics of the F-35.

      November 3, 2012 at 1:12 am | Reply
    • cja

It's true, laws of physics pretty much define the shape of the plane. Having those "schematics" is no help that are not even as detailed as you find in university level text books. Engines really boil down to materials science. If you can make the turbine blades you can build the engine. The hardest part to turning out thousands and thousands of blades that all work well. After that building an engine is not so hard.

      November 3, 2012 at 1:24 am | Reply
      • saoirse72

I get that. But given that there are already other designs out there it is interesting they decided to go with the design that is almost exactly they same as the F-35. Given that it took the US a few years to come to the design specs that are in the more current 5 gen fighters, how is it that China skipped the whole process the US had to go through in order to come to the same conclusions. Oh ya because not only can you find the specs online, but you can find them in even greater detail in your so called text books. I am not a conspiracy nut like others that post on cnn, it just doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how China came up with their current designs.

Sorry but you are out of your depth. Your corrupt government has created a situation whereby it willingly compromises the defence of its own citizens by giving corporations open access to defence technology. This has allowed the Chinese to steal/be given technology that cost US taxpayers trillions. What a nation of morons.

      November 3, 2012 at 1:16 am | Reply
      • Don

Of course the Chinese can copy almost anything. They can reverse engineer and also look at the parts that Boeing and Airbus have them built and figure out how to build parts for their fighter. Sill, that will not make their fighter equivalent to the F-22 or F-35 in term of air superiority or will be able to fight the F-22 or F-35. The other big equation is the avionic and that is not something that they can get a hold of easily. Even with the partners, the US still control the avionic and program and code that control all the functions of the airplane. We don't give that away, even with closet allies. We can give or sell them the same plane, but if it does not have the same avionic, it is not the same. Get it.

Why is there an American Eagle logo on the plane?

Not only that, it appears to be the Pratt & Whitney engine co. logo. Perhaps P&W made the engines?

I can't wait to visit there actually. I have a few friends from work who are from China, and they say it's a blast and the people are really friendly– they invite you to stay overnite even if they haven't known you for even an hour.

How do you steal a light, dual engine stealth fighter when nobody has something like that? Think before you type.

Its just a duel engine F-35. The F-35's biggest drawback is its single engine. China just improved the F-35.

What did they copy this time? THis is the only small sie plane that has both f35 and f22 type shapes on the same plane but at 2/3rd scale. OK they made the wheels round. Is that copying?

Of course, and I would not say copying, but the United States of America, is providing the technology to build that kind of plane. I work at a University, that is flooded with Chinese students. I asked a physics professor that teaches upper level classes what nationalities were his students; he told me all 18 students in one of his classes are Chinese . Oh! and they are not the polyester type of 15 years ago, they dress with designer clothes, have fancy cell phone and laptops, dye their hair, but not blonde but in different colors. They drive European cars, not American's; such as,(Mercedes, BMW, Audis), and not the cheap ones. Another peculiar thing is that almost all, are younger than 22 but they are graduate students . I have asked them in several occassionhow come they were soo young, and they said they don't take vacations, holidays, or weekends is 365 days a years.

You have it right. If the Chinese over run the world it is because that work harder than anyone. 1/2 of our kids drop of of high school in some cities. Over there in China we see these kids in school nearly 24×7.

China is three times the size of the US and the people there work as much as there are physically able, twice as much as Americans.

Stealing our planes plans by hacking our servers, holding your currency artificially low and paying employees pennies a day doesn't hurt either.

Spot on! We Europeans pays these Chinese to drive our cars and steel your technology. 😉

Kind of looks like an F35. Do you think it could do what an F35 could do?

Depends on if you're talking about the A, B, or C models. Based on the design, it'll probably perform like the A or C models though with inferior electronic warfare capabilities and a larger RCS, and it probably won't have vtol capabilities like the F-35B.
