Analysis: Five weeks on, confusion and contradictions on Benghazi suspects

By Tim Lister, Chris Lawrence and Paul Cruickshank

Five weeks after terrorists stormed the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, confusion over the nature of the attack, the extent to which it was planned and the identity of the perpetrators seems as pervasive as ever.

The latest in the conflicting reports coming out of the country: the naming of Ahmed Abu Khattala as a suspect in the assault that left four Americans dead.

Abu Khattala was identified in published reports this week as the leader of Ansar al-Sharia, an Islamist group widely suspected to be involved in the consulate attack.

Also: How intelligence understanding of Benghazi changed

Both The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times reported Wednesday that Abu Khattala was at the consulate while the attack was unfolding.

"Witnesses ... have said they saw Mr. Abu Khattala leading the assault," The New York Times reported.

But some sources in Benghazi say they doubt Abu Khattala had such a role, telling CNN that he is neither the leader of Ansar al-Sharia nor currently connected with other jihadist groups.

Two sources in Benghazi contacted by CNN describe Abu Khattala as conservative but not a jihadist. They say they had previously heard nothing about his being a suspect in the attack.

That view was echoed by Hamad Bugrain, a spokesman for the February 17 Brigade, who denied that Abu Khattala led the attack and said he "is no longer active in any military service or in any brigades." February 17th is considered one of the more effective units in Benghazi and intervened to help Americans trapped at the consulate's annex building on the night of the attack.

Bugrain added that Abu Khattala had been connected to Ansar al-Sharia at some point but he now has a "normal lifestyle."

Another source with well-established contacts among Libyan jihadist groups said Abu Khattala had come to prominence during the 2011 Libyan revolution after being freed from Abu Salim prison in Tripoli.

The source said Abu Khattala had a radical reputation as a "takfiri" - a Muslim who accuses other Muslims of being apostates if they don't follow certain aspects of Sharia law. He added that Abu Khattala's former brigade had been suspected in the assassination last year of former Interior Minister Abdelfattah Younis in Benghazi, after he had defected from the Gadhafi regime.

Abu Khattala himself spoke with Reuters in Benghazi on Thursday and said he had heard he was a suspect only through news media.

"These reports say that no one knows where I am and that I am hiding," he told Reuters. "But here I am in the open, sitting in a hotel with you. I'm even going to pick up my sister's kids from school soon."

He denied being a leader of Ansar al-Sharia but said he was friendly with the group and knew its members. He also acknowledged going to the consulate the night of the attack after receiving a phone call about the assault, but told Reuters: "Just because someone is there doesn't mean they were behind it."

"I arrived at the scene just like the others did - to see what was happening," he told Reuters.

Abu Khattala gave the same account to New York Times correspondent David Kirkpatrick, who told CNN Friday: "He said he was on the scene but arrived after the shooting had already begun and was just basically trying to break up a traffic jam." (Watch the interview)

But Kirkpatrick said he did not think Abu Khattala's account was particularly convincing.

Lack of central authority an obstacle for investigators

One of the problems investigators face is the lack of central authority in Libya, where security relies upon various militia that co-exist uneasily. Additionally, many senior members of the security services - especially in Benghazi - have been assassinated in recent months.

The rampant insecurity in Benghazi is repeatedly referenced in roughly 160 pages of diplomatic traffic released Friday by the U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa.

They include one cable sent from the consulate just a week before the attack that reports: "An hour-long gun battle broke out between local police and militia forces August 28 ... demonstrating the very delicate dynamic among the city's official and unofficial security forces."

Kirkpatrick, who spoke to CNN from Benghazi, said Libya doesn't "have much of an army or police force ... so I think (Abu Khattala) feels a certain amount of impunity walking around the streets of Benghazi."

In several cases of politically motivated violence, suspects have been detained and questioned before being released "for lack of evidence." Few prosecutions have occurred.

When asked by CNN Friday if the United States has a good idea of where the leadership of Ansar al-Shariah is, a U.S. official said the current thinking is that the group is concentrated east of Benghazi.

Libyan officials say that dozens of militants who previously had compounds in and around the eastern town of Derna had recently sought refuge in the forests and ravines behind the coastal town of Susa, which lies between Derna and Benghazi.

Earlier this month, three Libyan policemen were killed in an attack on their checkpoint at Susa that was blamed on Islamist radicals.

Asked about the intelligence-gathering process in Benghazi, the U.S. official said: "We obviously don't have boots on the ground," but he did suggest that U.S. agencies are working with Libyans to gather information.

Was al Qaeda involved?

U.S. and Libyan authorities are also investigating whether al Qaeda's affiliate in North Africa - al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) - had a role in the Benghazi attack.

Several days after the assault, the president of Libya's Parliament, Mohammed al Magarief, asserted that U.S. intelligence had intercepted communications between elements of AQIM and Ansar al-Sharia.

Neither U.S. nor Libyan officials have given further details.

Since the fall of Gadhafi, experts believe AQIM has tried to expand its operations northwards into Libya from its sub-Saharan strongholds. Sources briefed by Western intelligence told CNN that last year two senior AQIM figures made trips to Libya to explore the possibility of cooperation with local Libyan Jihadist groups, secure weapons supplies and scout out possible locations for training facilities.

One of those operatives, Mohktar Belmokhtar, an Algerian founding member of AQIM, spent several months in Libya and traveled up to Libya's northern coast, according to the source.

The other, Abdelhamid Abou Zeid – whose reported execution of Western hostages has cemented a reputation for extreme brutality - made several trips to Libya in 2011, according to the source.

Both men are now believed to be in northern Mali, which has become the epicenter of AQIM operations after jihadist groups took control of much of the region this year.

There should be zero confusion. On 9/15 it was reported that al qaeda took responsibility for the attacks stating that the attacks were revenge for the death of their 2nd. Every since has been orchestrated to create confusion.

Here's a few things you should know about mr. schieffer. he hosted "face the nation" of cbs. he started off as a young investigative reporter for the washington post while nixon was president. he did not believe bob woodward and carl bernstein about the possible magnitude of the watergate break-in. he wished that he had accepted the watergate assignment. he has experience with your situation. he will look in your eyes and see nixon. just know that is why he will look at you that way after asking about terrorism and benghazi monday night

Unlike you, Bob Schiffer has equal intellectual capability as the President, they can see each other eye to eye, have a intellecgent discussion. No sure about Romney though.

The president's rose garden speech is a non-issue. He didn't really say anything, he rode the fence at Axelrod's instruction – which most likely sounded something like this 1) be outraged about Benghazi, 2) mention terrorism, but don't label it directly as such. And Obama is a great orator and did a great job, but he said nothing really meaningful that would indict him later on. The whole speech, if you read it is all emotion and gusto, no fact.

The administration then sent him on his way to Las Vegas to raise campaign money and begin driving the lead up to Susan Rice speaking 4 days later. I want to see where she got these talking points. This is prime CHI politics. Use someone else outside your cabinet to deliver misinformation that can be sacrificed. In the meantime, use the cover of this distraction to achieve your agenda. Axelrod and team know that eventually their actions will come to light, they are just hoping that the election is over and the confetti falling diminishes the noise.

The administration probably did report the info for the same reasons that police departments puts out false or misleading information so suspects will come to the surface. I wonder who paid off these terrorists to tray and throw the election.

Dear CNN, if there is ever an open forum for readers to ask POTUS a question, I would like the chance to ask one thing. Was he calling the 9/11/12 attack in Libya during the speech in the rose garden an act of terrorism or not? I think it's fair at this point that the answer be clear. If there is opportunity to pose this question, please, please do so.

President Obama did not say the attack on the Consulate was an act of terror. In paragraph 3 he said the US condemns this outrageous [not terror] attack. In paragraph 4 he talks about denigrating religious beliefs and says, but there is no justification for this type of violence. He is clearly linking the attack to the video. Only much later in paragraph 10 he refers generally to acts of terror.
If the President said the attack was an act of terror, no one reported that. All of the reporting was that the attack was attributed to the video. Read The Caucus by Peter Baker and Sarah Wheaton in the Times on Sept. 12.
When the President said the US condemns, “this outrageous and shocking attack” and will “bring to justice the killers who attacked our people” and goes on to say, “we reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others but there is no justification to this type of senseless violence” he is referring to reaction to the video, not terrorism. A spontaneous violent reaction to a video is an outrageous, senseless type of violence. An act of terror is very purposeful.

You know what has been a recurrent thought in my head? Joe Wilson's "You Lie!" all through these years. But I never wanted to scream it louder than when he was in the Rose Garden giving that speech. Actually, it sounds to me like the White House had very little to do with the decision about security at this post. It sounds more like our house foreign affairs and intelligence comittee's that dropped the ball here. They kept drawing down on security knowing that the region was growing more and more unstable. Who heads up these comittee's anyway?? Oh thats right. I wonder how many more embasies and consulate posts our comittee's have cut back security for?? Of course that's the GOP perogative is it not? Cutting spending?? I love the way CNN brings low-ball guy John King in when there is political fodder to be dug.

Obama did not attend security briefings which pretty much left life and death decisions up to whoever was available. Obama is keeping silent (did not answer the debate question & not responding to the Senate investigative committee) because there is no way out for him he is counting on his voters to be uninformed and for the most part they are.
The budget for security was cut by a democrat majority. That was established during the Senate investigation which was on TV.

What may be more damagng to the President is ..... " was there any intelligence report from the NSA or any other government agency sent to the Presidents attention that indicated an imminent attack on the embassy /consulate in Benghazi ?" "We were the last flag flying" ... The Bristish were gone ...Red Cross was out of there .... seems to me there was only one target left ! Oh yeah lets decrease the securitty staffing in Lybia .... where's the intelligence in that ?? Mr Donilan ... Were you aware of any of these occrurances or requests .... ??? "Did you ever warn the President of the events and possible attack in Lybia??? If not given all the information now known ...either there was a complete lack of communication ( hard to swallow that one) You didn't warn the President ( a fireable offense for deraliction of duty) OR You did do your job and warned the President and the warnings went unheeded ... Even in the second debate the President seemd a bit sheepish... like he knew somthing was out there when he told Romney to "proceed" I dont have dog in this fight because ever since "IM NOT A CROOK NIXON" lied to US I have a deep distrust of government .... At least Kennedy had honesty to admit to the american publc his utter failure for the BAY of PIGS... an error of commision I just wonder if this situation in Benghazi is an error of omission either on the part of the intteligence community or the president ...We'll find out sooner or later because whats done in darkness will eventually be exposed by the light

It is highly inconvenient for this administration to really get down to the truth in this matter as that would blow their boasts of defeating Al Quaeda right out of the water. So of course they are not going after the mastermind and are constantly trying to obfuscate and muddy the waters.

I however am pretty sure that this, and a few others shady deals of this administration will be fully exposed once Romney is in office.

Obama had some fairly significant course corrections once he got into office. Do you presume that any Presidential Candidate has as much information at hand as the current Commander in Chief? This is a matter for the Commander in Chief as it is an an assault on our Nation. We, as a Nation, will always go kick the ass of any that do such unto us. That is the way we have done it and that is the way we will do it. It has nothing to do with who is on office. It is the American way. This should not be a political point. And for those on the Left who want to say that Obama took out Bin Laden, I would offer similar advice... Our system will eventually take care of those. For Obama's credit, he did give the go on the mission that was filled with doubt. Not unlike the coach that goes for it on 4th and 2 on the 50 yard line, if the team makes it, it was a great call, if not, then not. No more, no less. It was a gutsy call and it worked out. Good for us as a Nation and we should all support the Commander in Chief who made the call. And if we think the Commander in Chief failed us recently, then we vote him out... But we should not undermine the Commander in Chief on something like 'they should have done more'... you cannot stop all events... simply impossible... I will not hold Bush responsible for 911 and I will not hold Obama responsible for this... And you should not hold yourself responsible for the next crime that is committed against you unless you have really done something wrong...

  18. Independent Thoughts

Left and Right... Comments about Bush and Clinton... Independent in thought, I try not to lean to far toward either side... Presently a bit to the left but not always there and hoping the right comes back towards center... There may certainly be a better way to run the government and maybe Romney is it... I certainly won't jump up and down and proclaim that Obama's change is great... Here is one of my rubs: the right tells me that Obama is running us (US) into the ground financially yet it was mostly Bush (Rumsfield, Cheney & friends) that entered us into unfunded wars (into Iraq being most egregious as it lost us significant Islam nation support and gained us little if anything). What I desire from the fiscally (financially) responsible right is an acknowledgment that the Bush years were not fiscally responsible. I want my nation to move towards a balanced budget that trends the deficit in the correct direction. I see my National Debt as the greatest threat to my Nation's future sovereignty. And I want to see how it is done. A balanced checkbook that shows the cuts in funding and the increases in government revenue (i.e. taxes) that are required to fix this sinking ship of finance. I am sick of politicians on the left and the right telling me how easy it is to fix the budget. It is not. There will be many programmatic cuts (Social & Department of Defense – and this will impact the socialized industries that require government funding to exist – and this will impact jobs in most congressional districts as the Defense Industry has grown to become the creature that Eisenhower warned us against) and there will be tax increases. Does anyone honestly believe you can lose weight without adjusting your caloric intake (how much you eat) and how much energy you expend (exercise)? And don't get me wrong, I value a strong National Defense and will vote to maintain it. It causes me concern that the Joint Chiefs of Staff cannot cut Defense spending due to the jobs that will be impacted. If you are truly concerned about a Socialist State, look no further than the Defense of our Nation. It is Socialized. And I would vote to maintain a certain level of Industrial Base to maintain our defense (not unlike paying a firefighter to be on standby for some future event), but I recognize it as what it is, a certain level of Socialism that is required in our society (I know, some folks are confused that Socialism is Communism is like worship of Satan... be at ease, schools and roads and transportation and utilities and emergency services and defense of our nation are all socialized... hell, we even socialize growing corn to produce ethanol which would be otherwise nonprofit making). And yes, I fully understand the tremendous difficulties we as a nation have with our social programs and I get angry with the abuses... What I am suggesting is that the left and right both get off their high horses and come to the middle to meet with us who have enough thought capacity to entertain advices from either side. What the hell happened to high school debate? Have we really become a Nation of Left and Right where an individual is not allowed to entertain thoughts from either side? Have I become an outcast in our society because I give consideration to both sides of an argument?

Romneys daily lies and uninformed bellicose foreign policy statments portrays an ominous future for Americal if he's elected. New wars in the middle east, an economy killing trade war with China, destruction of all facets of health care, exremist right wing religious policies targeting women's rights . . . the list of backwards thinking policies is endless. Republicans have lost their minds, plain and simple. The attack happened and nothing can change that. The reason why it happened is irrelevent. Does it really matter WHY people flew planes into the towes on 9-11, would that change the number of dead? It just smacks of desperation on the right, trying to publicize the deaths of Americans. Maybe they should go back to "you didn't build that".

And the left is complaining that Romney and the right is 'using' this to embarass the President for political purposes. What nonsense, this just happened weeks ago and it is symptomatic of this President's poor grasp of foreign events. This is exactly why the USA needs to dump Obama and get someone who can handle being President. The left wing needs to get off the weed long enough to see what is happening outside of the borders of the USA. This President thinks that America needs to apologize when what the rest of the world wants is for America to show leadership.

In Mitten's 47% video, Mittens is caught saying how he hopes a terrorist attack occurs to make Obama more vulnerable!

Think about that. Mittens would rather Americans get hurt or killed in order to make Obama look bad so that he can win the Presidency!

The RIGHT-WING nuts fail to realize that there are TWO different issues at play here.

    1. The MILLIONS of ANGRY ARABS rioting and creating chaos because of the YouTube Christian Taliban video.

    2. The Benghazi Attack

These MILLIONS of ANGRY ARABS were rioting and creating chaos BEFORE and AFTER the Benghazi attack. They blamed US PROPAGANDA for the YouTube Christian Taliban video.

These MILLIONS of ANGRY ARABS were attacking US and Western facilities and symbols all across the Muslim world because of the YouTube Taliban video ... BEFORE and AFTER the Benghazi attack.

As COMMANDER-in-CHIEF you have to QUELL the MILLIONS of ANGRY ARABS before the rioting and chaos gets further out of hand that might lead to INSTABILITY in those regions. Hence, you have to let them know that US gov't and PEOPLE do not support the YouTube Christian Taliban video.

In the minds of RIGHT-WING nuts, who are looking for an excuse to support there fairy-tale narrative about Obama, because the Obama's administration had to respond to TWO different issues simultaneously, it was too much for the feeble minds to grasp. Hence, it supported their narrative that Obama is somehow lying.

Obama's administration were saying TWO different things in regards to TWO separate issues!

In regards to the Benghazi attack, they were consistent in calling it an "ACT of TERROR". Obama used that term numerous times in the following days.

What remains unknown or murky about the Benghazi attack, is whether it was a PRE-PLAN AL QAEDA attack or whether it was a SPONTANEOUS attack under the cover of the MILLIONS of ANGRY MUSLIM MOBS rioting and creating chaos in the Muslim region.

Was Benghazi suppose to be a a SAFE HAVEN? Did Ambassador Stevens evacuate from Tripoli to Benghazi because of the fear over the ANGRY MUSLIM MOBS attacking the Tripoli embassy over the YouTube videos?

Remember, the US embassy in Egypt was attacked earlier. So, the thinking could have been to get out of Tripoli ... assuming it would be safer in Benghazi.

So once the INVESTIGATION is over, we'll know more about why Ambassador Steven had left Tripoli for Benghazi.

Thanks for a reasonable assessment. Initially "talking down" a mob or a hostage taker is always the professional approach in civilian law enforcement. And Libya is a much more volatile and difficult environment, as this excellent article describes. Our ambassadors have to work with the weak and disorganized new Libyan government to get anywhere on a criminal investigation. Benghazi is not New York City but even American police, DAs and mayors often release the barest of details about a crime while the investigation is underway. So we know that the Republican reaction to this is just a political take-down.

I heard the journalist Erin who is keeping this story alive has an agenda her husband is a Wall Street guy and she is a Mitt fan so naturally she wants to make the President look bad.

The families have spoken and noone is listening I think they should let the independent committee do their job and then get the truth instead of making it political. When you listen to Erin she sounds like some of the people on FOX she is obsessed with pushing this story and not waiting for the investigation to be complete.

What happen to good journalist that report the correct news and not be opinionated and serve their own agenda.

Answer me this, how is it that a man can kill and preach about when it is OK to kill and still follow the laws of the god of abraham?

why did mohammed have his followers bow to jeruselem before bowing to mecca if mecca was so important?

The Kaba in mecca has nothing to do with islam it is a pagan site used by 360 different pagan religions before mohammed took mecca by force. The pilgrimage as well is pagan (infidel) practice having a yearly Olympic like peace once a year so these different religions can pray and trade... how can you just take someone's religious site and call it yours? Then still call them infidels? (ibid) Golden Dome... you and I know horses can't fly...

Curious are the 72 virgins good muslim virgins or are they infidel virgins

why is it that mohammed can have 9 wives and allow his followers only 4 if they can afford the property?

would you marry your 9 yr old daughter to a 53 yr old man like mohammed?

why did mohammeds own family kick him out of mecca?

why did mohammed exile two indigenous tribes from medina when he himself wasnt even from there

Why did mohammed kill every man woman and child from a third indigenous tribe in medina when they wouldnt assist them with their war on mecca? Genocide by so called prophet... is that the guy you follow?

why did he rob and steal from caravans from Mecca when he was at war with mecca?

why did mohammed even need to fight mecca if he was to so called prophet of god?

why do islamist follow sharia law when it is not even mentioned in the Koran, it was invented by man 200 yrs after mohammeds death is MAN's laws... nothing to do with the Koran.

You have lots of questions. But you are not in search for answers. Nor we muslims are in need of replying with so much questions brought together irrelevantly. First you have to know the politics of 6th century Arabia before hand.

Stick with your silly hatred over there. That is with no cure. And we are not in need of curing you anyway.

By the way, keep on believing a novice bunch of insurgents (not SEALS) had somehow managed to hunt an Ambassador of the most powerful nation, with all of his guards.
Maybe it is time for you to judge your own beliefs.

It must be much worse than we think…

In lieu of coming out and explaining what happen hours after the attack and telling the truth, we have gotten the You Tube treatment.

One possible reason…It is quite possible that we watched and knew in real time that we were under attack. (Our facilities and that area of the world have some of the best 24/7 surveillance anywhere). It is quite possible that we or our allies received request for assistance during the attack. It is quite possible that we made the decision either after seeing all was lost, including personnel, not to proceed with force on force to save our people.

The part of this that is so scary is that after this happened we now know the White House knew in 24 hours that this was a terrorist attack. Why did they for two weeks try to blame this on a obscure video that was put out in July? I hope it was not a coverup by the White House, but I am afraid it is.

I read the transcript of Romney's 47% dinner party conversation with his donors. How sick is it that they discuss the IRAN hostage crisis, wondering if there is some way to "duplicate" it. With all the money some of these people have, how hard would it be? Romeny even mentions that he has people on his staff who have worked for the Israeli Premier. Then Romney goes on to assure them that should the opporunity present itself he will take advantage. Nothing about how horrible a situation would be for the victims. Now after watching Romney smirk his way thru that "news conference" it makes perfect sense. In his warped mind he's thinking "Yeah! What a great opportunity!"

I think it would be difficult to arrive at a better MidEast policy than Obama/Clinton is already doing. Just as the emerging class of freedom-minded Arabs are attempting to implement modern, legitimate, rule-of-law governments in a region plagued by conflict and extremism, so is the Administration trying to support them.

The two worst things US can do is: ignore them, or attack them. We need to build bridges with the right folks, of whom there are plenty. The shame of Stevens' death is that that is exactly what he was enthusiastically doing. What a loss! God rest his soul.

The fact is, this election has caused the total and immediate politicization of this incident, and both candidates and both parties are equally at fault. This politicization is hindering the investigation of and response to this incident and damaging America's interests. Obama's wrong in that his administration had incorrect information and put it out there even though they also had other, better information. But that's something that happens when you have to respond to these things without being sure what's actually going on. Romney was wrong in that his first response was to attack and undermine the President, before anyone even knew what was going on, and in doing so he damaged the response to an international incident; when the President is acting as leader of his party and advocate for its policies, by all means attack him, but when he's acting as America's head of state and commander in chief, you should have the deference and respect for the office and for the country to lay off for a few hours at least.

You can look on Google and watch the address in the Rose Garden, which took place the day after the incident, where Obama calls it "an act of terror." I'll be the first to admit he didn't have all of his subordinates reading from the same page, but then that's hardly uncommon nowadays, is it? The same thing's happened to Romney.

I don't expect you to change your mind, of course, I believe everyone who plans to vote decided long before the debates – but I just thought I'd get that out there.

Unfortunately this attack has happened, but the real question now is what should be learned from this attack to prevent this same or similar situation from happening again? Why not have in place a clear set of rules of engagement stating exactly what happens when a US embassy is attacked, what happens when an American embassy staff is killed? There are many means to reprisal and I am not jsut talking about a military response. Let all those who hate us and want to carry out terrorism on notice. A country that harbors terrorists needs to be held accountable for what they harbor.

Mark, How does this affect our Foreign Policy? It shows a number of things. 1>> obama has said OSB was killed and implied al qaeda went with him. 2>> The attack shows the world that we are back to the Jimmy Carter days, when Muslims could take Americans hostage, hold them for 444 days, and not fear retribution on our part. The message we are sending is we are weak, and will stay that way if obama is re-elected. 3>> Tapes and memos are now coming out showing the W/H was aware of the potential for problems a few months prior to 9/11/12, and the US did nothing about the situation. 4>> Muslims knew nothing of the tape prior to obama an company blabbing to the world about it. 4>> Any bad news concerning terrorists attacks would not bode well for obama's re-election.
Believe me, this has nothing to do with the 'conservative tough guy ego'. BTW, where did you pick that phase up?

Let's not forget, the cover up was not the only problem here. There is no excuse for having effectively no security there! None! Even if Martians somehow prevented all the requests for more security from reaching the state department, even if these same aliens prevented intelligence reports of the numerous attacks and incidents in Bhenghazi in the preceding months...what were they thinking? A freshman in high school could tell you that you need to have a strong presence in this turbulent, extremist filled country that was struggling to build a government. And oh yeah, it was 9/11! No intel or security requests should even have been needed!

Biden tries to distract with talk of budget cuts? Please. There were Marines in embassies all around the world that weren't needed.

The Marines were not in Libya because the liberals in the state department and in the admin did not want to offend Islamics who might see them as occupiers and infadels. Why did Bin Laden attack the US? Because there were troops in Saudi Arabia. Liberals blame 9/11 on our offending Muslims. And that's what they were worried about here. And that's why these people died.

I agree that, based on what information we have, the lack of security was a mistake. But if there had been security, the attack would likely still have happened, and conservatives would be instead be saying that the presence of such high security was the problem – that somehow it was a magnet for extremist anger towards the US.

With the current political climate, there is no way for the administration to calmly discuss an issue or admit a mistake without marking itself as a target for destruction by conservative commentators.

Interesting to read this blog. I am curious why on some CNN blogs (like this one) you can read comments that seem to escape censorship while most CNN blogs are clearly subjected to censorship. Uncensored comments are critical of President Obama as they should be. The censored blogs give the impression that Obama is a hero, he is a savior of the economy and the country and of course Romney/Ryan are monsters.

i noticed the censorship many times, Anne .Once there was an article on using nuclear energy and I knew that it is not economical unless subsidized by a government. Germany was dismantling theirs. My comments vanished 5 times because it did not agree with official propaganda. So it is with comments about a war with Iran. When the drums of war were beating fevershly not long ago, comments were vanishing that were againt the war from Reuters, MSNBC or you were just banned. That much for our "freedom of the press ".

It is unbelievable to me that CNN can finally cover Libya and completely fail to question why Obama lied about this for a week. Why a California man was arrested for the video that we now know had nothing to do with the terrorist attack. Obama claimed in the debate that he knew it was a terrorist attack the day after. WHY THEN DID HE LIE AND BLAME IT ON A YOUTUBE VIDEO PROTEST???? For an entire week. There was no protest (we know that from security video). It was a flat out terrorist attack and he lied about it purely for political gain. What a spineless, sorry excuse for a leader. To top it all off, he went out and accused Romney of politicizing the event. You disgust me Obama!!!

When Obama was elected, the count stopped..Why, because he promised to end all wars and pull everyone out..So, if we idiots don't see the numbers, it's as though there is no more war...It amazes me how stupid people are and let this guy lie...They even allow him to call others liars and don't call him out..I have to say, I was shocked when Matt Damon spoke against Obama...Hollywood people are usually brainwashed pretty well..Look at Longoria...She just vomits their Hollywood thinking...

While I think it's great that you're respecting the military and intelligence officials in allowing them to do their work without exposure (the president could take a lesson from you both). I think you're missing the point. It has been clearly established that it was a terrorist attack at this juncture. Now that this is a 'fact' the question is if they had such limited intel, why go to the media with a story that doesn't seem anywhere near the facts? A round of 5 morning shows is extreme. Don't you think? At some point, you have to scratch your head and wonder right, at least I hope so. The stories are too controverted, they took entirely too long to walk everything back. You can bash the repubs as much as you want, but it doesn't change the facts. You should be smelling something wrong here.

The fact is there have been Republican congressmen, such as William Thornberry R-Texas, who have claimed the CIA gave them the same briefing the Obama Administration was giving the American people 7 to 10 days after the event.. Not to mention that with every statement released by this administration they were quick to note that they were giving us the information as they are given it, there is a pending report being done, and that we truly don't know all the details to what happened....and honestly we still don't. This has become a completely politicized issue. Our government is not omniscient, especially in regards to trying to gather information in a fragmented country of loose militias, with no strong central government. Honestly, take a look at the issue. What's the bigger story for you here the fact that we had diplomats bravely working with Libyans to protect our and the new Libyan government interests or the fact that you feel Obama politicized this? I feel if we all focused on the the prior the focus more on the tragedy and the facts...as CNN is posting here. But, unfortunately, that isn't the case. Instead of prayers to the families of those lost and support to our country to get those that have wronged our brothers, we watch several media outlets vehemently play partisanship and we eat it up readily. There is plenty to blame Obama here, but politicizing this issue that as a nation we need to stand together on is the blatant ugly side of politics.

CNN, a little direction for you. Since it's been firmly established this was a terrorist attack, here is the 'hot' follow-up story you should be investigating now. Give us the journalism '101' who, what, where, when, how on how the 'movie' story made it into 5 morning shows. Shouldn't you have Susan Rice back in now? For someone so ready to give a detailed accounting of a protest gone awry, seems strange now that the administration is claiming confusion. Have her back in, would love to hear her give a play-by-play on her instructions. Interesting that she is nowhere to be found. Likely on a paid sabbatical courtesy of the administration, or using those amassed unused vacation days. She should be back in office a sometime shortly after November 6th I'm sure.

Intel may be difficult but is doubtless being done. Any second guessing by anyone but CIA and associated allied intelligence agencies will just obfuscate the general understanding. To make a political stand on this by RR is close to treasoeous. The Administration cannot tell what they know without alerting the terrorists (intelligence, methods and techniques). When the CIA and the President are certain of their intelligence, I would expect missile strikes and/or Delta/Ranger/Seal/Marine SOF action.

I too have wondered what has happened to the reporting on CNN. As CNN became fixated on the Benghazi issue with every anchor repeating the same thing over and over for the last two weeks. I too wondered if they somehow had shifted their producers and were becoming more like Fox, introducing this "red herring" before an election to affect the election. There are so many issues coming up Voter Suppression in Florida, which I have experienced, 23,000 homeless children in Florida, trying to reshape our judicial system, the rise of the Plutocrats and the Koch Brothers,
30 million un-insured and the lost of insuring people with pre-existing conditions if we lose Healthcare and yet CNN focused on Benghazi.

At least this story portrays the real confusion in Libya and lack of stability and the militia's running the country. Isn't that anarchy?

What is it that people want, ok you want Rice to resign. Great. The question is why can't these people respect the parents of the Americans who lost their lives. In fact, how many lives do we have to lose in the Middle East. What is our purpose War or is it Oil, or is it trying to tell people in other countries what to do? How is this helping Americans whether Republicans or Democrats. Do we want another 10 years or war in the Middle East? How about World War III. Why can't we reach out and help each other? Why the blind eye to proverty? Why are we hurting ourselves with wedge issues that in the end hurt the masses? We have gone bankrupt spiritually and morally.

Actually, given what Romney said when he was secretly recorded back in September, one can start to wonder if Romney's supporters or campaign had something to do with it. In that recording Romney claims to have enlisted campaign specialist which also did campaigns overseas, specifically the middle east. He also stated that if an event in the middle east came up before the election he would take full advantage of it. Furthermore, Romney also stated that his campaign people had some plan in process but that if he shared it he would have to "kill" who ever he shared it with. At first glance it seems like it's all fun and games, but now days who knows how far greed will take someone. I also seem to remember hearing at one time in the news that the attack appeared to have been instigated. But by who? Maybe we will never know.

What is sad in this whole thing is that 4 people lost their lives. Intelligence take time to gather and they work under cover..I have always voted republican..But it is very sad to see that one of the parties is trying to gain political leverage on someone's death. The party I have voted for would never do that. I would be hard pressed to believe that McCain would have allowed the death of people to be campaign theme instead of trying to explain the proposed policies...This is not the conservatives that I knew all these years..I am sad to see the state of Romney/Ryan's campaign. It is already shameful here in Arizona the campaign that Jeff Flake and Joe Arpaio are running.. For the first time, I may vote against Republicans or wont vote at all...

Could it be all this confusion over whether it was a protest or planned terrorist attack is CNN's fault? They covered the news constantly that week and showed images of protestors in Libya and Cairo, and referred ceaselessly to the anti-muslim film as the impetus for the violence. They seem to have forgotten their own reporting!

Also, could it be possible that the CIA is following/watching suspects and finding out who they are associating with rather than arresting them right away? Surveillance would be the smart thing to do to catch the whole group responsible.

What drives me crazy is that CNN seems like they are now an extension for FOX News... just in the last couple of weeks. Makes me wonder if the Republican producers are writing the news these days. This Benganzi thing is such a destructive red herring distracting the public away from other issues that matter to them!

That's hilarious. They are a propaganda machine for the left. CNN failed to punish Crowley. The didn't publish the gallup poll showing Romney up by 6 points. They put the ridiculous 'binders' thing on their front page. The bias is way into the propaganda range.

Well, it is about time CNN. You have been covering for Obama for FOUR years! I just happened to go by CNN and saw you were finally telling the TRUTH.
While Obama is wildly hunting this guy down, he is on TV giving interviews and being a hero!
When will you people understand how horrible the Obama administration and Obama expressly have hurt our Country.
You may be too late, and you have the next 4 years of BLOOD on your hands.
I think Romne can win this but he certainly needs your help by just being truthful for a change. STOP covering for this idiot.

FACT1: Obama and company have been caught trying to cover up Benghazi attack by claiming common day protesters turned violet over a video…….WHY: They didn’t want Americans to know Al-Qaeda is alive and well and our diplomats were not adequately protected……Despite numerous request……….

FACT2: The video explanation was televised by Obamas administration on many talk shows and a UN speech……..This broadcasting of the Video incited many riots with additional deaths (mainly Muslim) …..Many Many Muslim knew little of video until after the Obama administration mass broadcasting of it.

FACT3: A video of our own was created apologizing for the disparaging video (the one Obama and company advertised) and broadcast in Muslim countries on tax payer’s dime!

    This is impeachment material folks!!!!!!!

While I am thinking about it....When I was working, I hired thousands of people for various projects for several companies. I don' want a database (which would be very Leona) I want to look at the pages, see how they print, what do they say about themselves. I can't see that on a database and I can not imagine that grown people who have had the slightest bit of business, and Don't know what a binder is for????? REALLY?

Sorry, Something Wrong Here. I have been holdig my Malevolent feelings for CNN for a very long time.
If CNN does not persue the Lybia story, they should go out of business. (I read they were close, no wonder)
I have heard three alternate theories. If you think about it, just being unprepared would not be this bad. If they were only guilty of not putting enough security in the area, they could take that hit. Here we go:
The killing of Moammar Gadhafi, Hillary said. We came, we KILLED, we left. HA. HA. Ha. # 1 We lost large number of guns in the Gadhafi stage,.perhaps our Ambassador was going to negotiate their return & it went F & F (that is another story) # 2. What if Obama needed another rescue because he couldn't hold off the Bin Laden kill any longer?.
Someone kidnaps our Ambassaor and our Super team of Seals save him?? But the save didn't happen.
      # 3. How about Hillary and Obama decide that how cool would we be if we sent a unmarried, no children, guy who could be gay into that area. After all he had a life time of service, was a great man. His facebook and his photos suggest such a thing. These are just theories. What ever it is, it was not a Video! If we elect this criminal who should be impeached,NOT elected!!!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE! And just as a FYI, # 4. I don't think Obama even wants this job. His first debate certainly did not reflect his interest. I think he wants to go to the cushy 35 million dollar house that Penny Pritzer (of hotel fame) is getting ready for a JAN move in. Google it. He has seen Bill Clinton's lifestyle and he would like to just play golf and drop by some of his celebrity friends, with his Presidential Coolness. Obama certainly did not function for the last 4 years like a leader. Where was he??? How dare him after so mahy people trusted him.
Obama did not do ONE of his promises. I will cut the deficit in half, I will close Gitmo, I will unite the people, I will lower the unemployment to 6%. WHAT????

I love how CNN is now, more than month plus after the attack, willing to get into the weeds around specifics of the day of. A little late don't you think? I mean State Department personnel and Intelligence officials have already sat in front of congressional hearings and said as much that it was a "terrorist attack". So why are we noodling this now? This would certainly have been helpful the week of the attack, but I am yawning now. Looking at the by-line on this piece we have 3 authors; let's assume these guys are likely cub reporters sent out to gather up the details, to do clean-up essentially, so CNN can say, " we covered it". I give these guys great credit, and wish they would've been assigned this piece at the beginning, rather than all of CNN's top names, who essentially sat there towed the "movie" brief and indicted anyone questioning it, rather than asking for the release of the facts. Journalism can't be editorial opinion without fact, we need facts, that's what CNN is supposed to be about. Give us the facts please, early and often. Losing respect for your brand.

If it came up in the debate, my response to Mitt....

Let the intelligence agencies do their jobs and figure out what happened. It is better that they take the time needed to get it right than a bunch of guess work. When they know, you will know. And stop using it for partisan purposes because the time it is taking to get it right is politically inconvenient for you.

Done. There have been too many times that got the US into trouble because of bad or ignored intelligence. Vietnam and Iraq2 come to mind. Mitt should stfu. The more he pushes too hard to get political advantage the worse it reflects on him.

To tell you the truth I really think there is a lot more to Libya and Afganistan than you know... I think it's worse and more of a danger to American troops to cut down their ranks and reduce funding. All the American Armed Forces deaths that happen now are more than likely due to diminished bases and no reinforcements. If it's going to be like that then I say pull out of all these countries 100% because leaving them unarmed and under staff is a dangerous game.

It's the same as Libya, with this guy in the White House that sees the world as the USA is the enemy and we need to believe in our enemy, believe that things will just get better if we put down our guns... What a dangerous way to operate when you are in a state of war with an enemy that is always thinking...

Happening right now are more than likely plans for attacks sophisticated attacks... Our enemy wants nothing more than a United States President that prefers to "lay low" ...

As you said, theories. And that is the right way to put it. But it is different when someone presents it as fact.

One of the other news items of the last few days is the Zimmerman case. Its going on 8 months and we still dont know the full story. We the public are still not sure who did what. All we hear are outsiders conclusions based on the partial information we do have. The various sides on the issue either wanted the guy convicted and sent to prison (or worse) immediately. The other wanted him to walk immediately. Neither wanted to give prosecutors the time to do their jobs. And both were wrong.

Actually this works both ways. Wouldnt the Obama people want to know for certain who was responsible so they could go get him now and kill him? Then use that for political advantage like the other side is using Libya for theirs?

Is five weeks such a long time? Given that the attack came amidst an apparently unrelated riot and happened thousands of miles away in a country that's not particularly stable or well organized? Given that no group has claimed responsibility? Given that the general state of chaos has inhibited U.S. agents in their investigation?

How many serial killers in the U.S. have roamed and killed for years without being found? How long did it take to identify all of the participants in the 9/11/2001 attacks in the U.S.?

Don't you remember when G.W. Bush was running for reelection? The continued existence of al Qaeda was touted by Dick Cheney and many others as the biggest reason we needed to reelect Bush. You know, don't change generals in the middle of a war and all that.

Watchdog asked to investigate stimulus-backed battery plant after claims of idle workers

The top government watchdog for the Department of Energy has been asked to investigate a stimulus-backed Michigan battery plant where workers reportedly spend hours every day playing cards, watching movies and generally not working.

It was reported today that the LG Chem plant in Holland, Mich., which was approved for a $150 million federal grant from President Obama , had started putting workers on furlough due to lack of demand for their lithium-ion cells.

    Personal opinion :
What we know for sure is that a #muslimrage riot cleared the way for this attack. There is virtually no realistic chance of holding individuals accountable because of the nature of the attack. Any effort to convict any individuals of this will be seen (by me) as a scapegoat. These attacks were virtually impossible with out the #muslimrage riots. Personally I hold islam accountable for encouraging such things. You could potentially make the leaders of the radical groups who encouraged the riots go up in a puff of smoke but that is about as close to justice as you can get.

AG, The weapon used to kill our people could be shot by one person, alone gun man if you will, but there was some sort of commotion or riot or attack whatever phrase you want to call it.They could have killed whenever they wanted to but elected to use the event to do the deed. Now all the other riots in all other nations were all part of this conspiracy? And other 9-11s have gone by without riotting so I do believe the outlying fact is the film caused the fog needed to do what they intended in doing at some time. This is an act of terror just like the President said in the Rose Garden.

        October 19, 2012 at 11:13 pm |
      • reg
