State Department officials: Benghazi attack 'unprecedented'

From Jill Dougherty and Elise Labott

In the most detailed explanation yet of the attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, two senior State Department officials said there was no prior indication that an attack was imminent.

The officials, who briefed reporters on background in a conference call Tuesday evening, said there was "nothing unusual" throughout the day of the attack, September 11. The ambassador held an evening meeting with a Turkish diplomat and then retired to his room in one of the compound's buildings at 9 p.m., according to the officials.

The call, a day ahead of a congressional hearing into security failings at the diplomatic mission, was an attempt to offer the State Department's view that the severity of the attack and speed at which it unfolded made it impossible to defend even with some of the increased security measures that had been requested - but not fulfilled - before September 11.

The first sign of a problem came at 9:40 p.m. when diplomatic security agents heard loud talking outside the compound, along with gunfire and explosions.

U.S. official sought more security for Benghazi post

Asked whether the attack was a spontaneous assault taking advantage of a demonstration, as originally asserted by Obama administration officials, one senior official said, "That was not our conclusion."

"We don't necessarily have a conclusion," the State Department official said.

The two senior officials offered riveting detail of the attack, by what one official described as "dozens of armed men," marauding from building to building in the enormous complex and, later, firing mortars on a U.S. annex less than a mile away.

The attack created havoc on the compound, which had four buildings, including one that was used as a residence with bedrooms. The ambassador and two of his security personnel took refuge in a fortified room in the residence but the attackers penetrated the building, said the official. The attackers doused the building with diesel fuel and set it ablaze. The three men decided to leave the safe haven and move to a bathroom to be able to breathe.

In the chaos and smoke they were unable to find the ambassador. One official said it still is unclear how the ambassador got to the hospital where he was declared dead. Hospital personnel found his cell phone in his pocket and began calling numbers. That, the official says, is how U.S. officials learned where he was.

The officials echoed what administration officials have maintained since the attack: that U.S. and Libyan security personnel in Benghazi were out-manned and that no reasonable security presence could have fended off the assault.

Romney knew ex-SEAL slain in Benghazi

As one official said: "The lethality and the number of armed people is unprecedented. There had been no attacks like that anywhere in Libya - Tripoli, Benghazi or anywhere - in the time that we had been there. And so it is unprecedented, in fact, it would be very, very hard to find precedent for an attack like (it) in recent diplomatic history."

Thanks for the useful information on credit repair on this particular site. Some tips i would offer as advice to people is always to give up this mentality that they'll buy at this point and fork out later. As a society all of us tend to make this happen for many issues. This includes vacation trips, furniture, and also items we would like. However, you must separate the wants out of the needs. While you're working to raise your credit ranking score you really have to make some sacrifices. For example you can shop online to save cash or you can check out second hand retailers instead of high-priced department stores regarding clothing.

Judging from the enormity of the attack, the embassy might not have been able to fend it off even with a whole division of Marines at their back. No security would have been enough, even the security applied to high-risk situations.

After having helped Libya free itself from Kadafy, many Libyans were grateful. Moreover, they liked our ambassador. They respected him, because he was DOING things to help the people there. He was sincere about it, and was very popular. There was less pragmatic reason to enhance security than they would have for doing so in, say, Egypt or Tunisia. Terror groups exist, of course, in every nation, particularly those with a majority Muslim population. But in the case of Libya, it'd be hard for terror groups to gain support, or to recruit from the public, since they liked our ambassador so much. It is a rare man who can earn that much popularity and respect among Muslims. His loss was the loss of a rare national treasure. If he was killed because he WAS so popular, how could our government have anticipated THAT?

All ambassadors in ALL Muslim lands feel the threat of terror attacks. I wasn't shocked that one of our embassies had been attacked. It was the fact that it was in Libya which shocked me. They've been very friendly since Khadafy was overthrown. Our government can only make decisions on additional security based on what knowledge they have of the risks. Libya, as Muslim nations go, was not viewed as high risk. There was no reason to. And even the Libyans have – in DROVES – been railing at the Muslims who attacked our embassy. It is extremely rare for Muslims to castigate other Muslims publicly, yet they did it.

Our government had every reason to think Libya was a much more secure consulate than most of the others in the Islamic world. They can't be soothsayers. Nor is it uncommon for ambassadors to ask for more security, once they realize how unstable and violent that part of the world is. Finding themselves in the thick of a culture that hates everything about the free world is bound to generate a lot of fear. A person has to be very brave to even accept a post in the Islamic world.

I hope Ambassador Stevens is given the Congressional Medal of Honor. He earned it.

I can tell when right-wingers are commenting based on keywords and reciting by rote from places like Fox and our neocons. The constant reference to "Chicago-style politics" is one of them.

Unless they'd lived in Chicago, they can't know jack about Chicago politics. Moreover, Obama DID try to win an election – fighting AGAINST the Chicago political machine – and he won. He knew what the politics there were about, and condemned them. The right-wingers keep insisting he'd JOINED them! Yes, Obama knew Chicago politics, and he was smart enough to know how to make its own corruption work against it.

He isn't remotely a part of the political "machine" of Chicago.

But ignorance is an attribute that makes people vulnerable to lies. Nothing said by any right-winger who makes the "Chicago politics" claim can possibly be worth anything. Because it is based on ignorance, and the comments are playbook Republican tactics. They aren't smart enough to realize how they're being manipulated and USED by Republicans. They just comment the way they've been instructed to comment. Supremely stupid.

Pity them? Maybe. But not when their intellectual laziness is on such a grand scale that they can get a predator elected as president. Right-wingers don't even know what they are really FOR. They only know what they're AGAINST. And they're against Obama, mainly because he's black, and no black man has any right to be competent. Two grave offenses to the political right. So nothing he does can EVER be conceded as beneficial.

    Even when it is.

We're FOR traditional familes (you know, like a male dad and a female mom, in case you forgot about that concept), we're FOR self sufficiency versus dependence on government, we're FOR private sector business, we're FOR a smaller, more efficient government. But since you have already decided that we're simply against blacks, that explains everything for you, so why even engage you in a discussion?

Romney lied about meeting Doherty, He had that "emotional" speech about meeting Doherty and he was full of crap... His best friend was just interviewed on a local Radio station here and had this to say about Doherty's response to meeting Romney "He said it was very comical," Ellefsen said, "Mitt Romney approached him ultimately four times, using this private gathering as a political venture to further his image. He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line. Glen believed it to be very insincere and stale."

Later in the Interview Doherty's friend of 20 years said this "He said it was pathetic and comical to have the same person come up to you within only a half hour, have this person reintroduce himself to you, having absolutely no idea whatsoever that he just did this 20 minutes ago, and did not even recognize Glen's face."

Every person in America was focused on the event of 9/11, except the State Department.
This is total lack of focus by the Administration. The fairy tale bubble around the White House needs to be burst. There is a real world out there and Fairy tales and Hope do not solve the problems of the World or the Country. Hard work and sound judgements are needed. The Administration is showing it has neither.

The lessons of the Terror attacks of 11 years ago didn't sink in to the minds of the beaucrats in Washington. When your own people cry for help with security and you ignore it you are guilty.

CNN was at the attack site 3 days after sept 11th. They recovered Journals and other items?????? The FBI took weeks because it wasn't safe?????????
The real reason is to stall until after the election and try to make this go away.

This so reminds me of the Carter days. Don't do anything to offend the people that kill and hate us.
Are we American's or are we Cowards. If you have confidence in who you are don't be ashamed and make excuses. Maybe the Obama's are not that proud of America. Maybe things are going there way enough right now. Conditional pride in America???????? Even if we do "All of this for a Damn Flag" as the First Lady complained about in New York at Ground Zero.

Nothing unusual in the streets around the Consulate? Just a few Libyans walking around protesting an anti-Muslm film that was produced months before, a folm no one had even seen and these innocent civilians were only out for an evening stroll, lol, with mortars and RPG's. And yet Sec Rice and the rest of the obama team stick to this total fabrication of events. obama's chickens are coming home to roost. Wonder who will throw who under the bus, obama or Hillary. So it turns out that Romney was correct in his statement that was ridiculed by the press, and our Commander-In-Chief was knowingly lying. All of the middle east experts knew immediately, you know Obama was briefed by U.S. intellegence as to what the situation was. Instead of being the CiC and the leader of our country he was playing politics, WITH THE LIVES OF 4 U.S. CITIZENS WHO WERE HONORABLE SERVING THEIR COUNTRY. Ambassador Stevens served the U.S. AND Obama bravely and Obama cowered in the corner and APOLOGIZED to the killers of Americans! Anybody who can seriously support Obama is a mindless drone.

Obama lied to the American people and had his team out there lying too. The intelligence dept and the state department knew the next day that it was a terrori st attack and not because of the video. I'm sure they informed the President. Obama was hoping, I guess, to cover it up and CNN did all they could to help him as they ran the Romney 47% story as much as possible for those days following the 9/11 attack. Meanwhile, Obaba goes off to Las Vegas to campaign and the by Letterman, then the beyonce party. His place should have been at the white house with his security advisors and then on TV consoling the American after a terrorist attack.

If it weren't for the brave reporting of a few non-CNN reporters, this entire story would have been swept under the rug by the Obama administration. Osama bin Laden may be dead. Blah – Ener1, an electric car battery company that the Obama administration awarded a $118 million stimulus grant to expand its operations, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Ener1 is the third company to seek bankruptcy protection among those the Energy Department backed as part of the president’s signature program to invest in clean energy. Solyndra, a California solar-panel maker, and Beacon Power, a Massachusetts energy-storage firm, entered bankruptcy court proceedings in the fall, after having received taxpayer-guaranteed loans of $535 million and $43 million, respectively. You think Obama has a brain. He wasn't being nice doing the debates he just has an empty head.

Well before the attack he sent an in game message that said ”Assuming we don’t die tonight. Now that BengahziGate is blowing up in front of obama's eyes, who will be blaming who? Hillary blaming obama or obama throwing Hillary under the bus? We all know that obama is a Narcissist and a pathetic pathological liar, so I'm betting obama will attempt to throw Hillary under the bus. If that happens look for Bill to endorse Romney. This is becoming way to funny and far too sad, especially since the death of our Ambassador was the result of White House or State Dept negligence or most probably both.

Sadly – He hasn't had to throw anyone under the bus – as most of the media refuses to do all the reporting or ask the normal questions.

I've been reading reports Fox has on this – and they're actually doing journalism. Here's a simple fact – the current administration is comfortable that it can lie, cover up and change it's story and that they won't be questioned on it by CNN, CBS, NBC, the NY Times, etc.

The first amendment was created for the fourth estate – to protect us from government.

      We're in a sad state.

@ Blah blah -> Your evaluation is incorrect. Are you so naive as to believe simply because someone disagrees with Obama he is a "right-winger"? Ponder the following idea.. that realistic assessments are based on fact and not emotion. I would say the same thing if the administration were republican. The President is an employee of the American people. As his employer, I refuse to accept him placing blame on his predecessor after he's had four years to fix it. That is bad leadership, and inability to take responsibility. Obama's legacy will be that he incited class warfare, for the first time making some American believe that success in life is a bad thing. America is a corporation in trouble. Mitt is a successful businessman. He gets my vote.

@Blah --> After four years no President who can rightously call himself Leader of the United States of America should blame anyone but himself for his own failures. Why are you so intent of focusing on the past? Who cares about Clinton or Bush? They are gone. What they did they did. End of story. I am hoping soon America can say the same of Obama. What a disappointment that man is.

Furthermore, President Obama does not go aroung the country blaming Bush for the sh–t he inherited. A matter of fact, the President hasn't even blamed the GOT for their deliberate obstructionist measures. But the reality is that the President inherited a whole lot of sh–t from the previous administration and every time he tries to do his job, the GOT steps in the way to stall progress. And by the way, when the President asks millionaires and billionaires to pay a little more so that the economy can improve and the middle class can recover from this crisis after the wealthy got 8 years of tax breaks on the backs of the middle class, that is not class warfare. Its call doing your fair share. Furthermore, when you take away the collective bargaining rights of the middle class, force them to accept furlough days without pay, implement forced retirements, deprive workers of promotions and pay raises that they earned, force them to pay as much of 7% of their pensions for health insurance and take away Earned Income Tax Credit from over 5 million low income working Americans and slash domestic spending that fund nursing homes and dialisis treatment for over 2 million recipients nationwide, do you know what that is called? Its is called "REVERSED CLASS WARFARE."

        @ Jim

No you're wrong. We cannot forget especially when it is what the President is still dealing with today, thanks to the deliberate obstructionist measures by the GOT . And especially when Bush's failures of the past ( two deadly and costly wars that have inflated our national deficit = 5.2 trillion dollars to be exact) and an economic crisis are what President Obama has to deal with in the PRESENT . And its what the President is wrongfully being blamed for while the GOT are deliberately, stepping in the way and stalling progress.

Furthermore, thousands of our troops have died in Iraq over a lie, so my question to you is this, can you look the parents of these deceased soldiers in the eyes and tell them to forget the past? No, you cannot! Likewise, our trops are still dying in Afghanistan today because GWB and the GOP deliberately and recklessly abandoned and prolonged the Afghan war to invade Iraq. So can you look the parents of the deceased Afghan war veterans and tell them to forget the past? No, you cannot. But if you want to be persistent and say we should forget the past, then the attack of our consulate in Benghazi Libya is also the past.

The real story here is that bias in the media has grown to complicity. Where are the headlines on 9/11 Terror Attack. Where's the questioning of why they sent Rice on the Sunday morning talk show bonanza to say it was a spontaneous protest when the knew it wasn't. Where's the questioning on what's been a complete fumbling/cover-up by the White House.

Could anyone even imagine the coverage if Bush was in office?

This is only being reported because it can no longer be avoided. The media is spending all it's time on the events in Libya vs. questioning Hillary and Obama because they don't want to print any bad news before the election.

We've reached a very sad state with both this administration and the media (CNN, NBC, CBS, NY Times, Washington Post, etc.) that are trying so hard to get him re-elected.

Let's forget foreign policy for a brief moment!

Let me see if I get this right...

Mitt Romney has gained significant ground in the national polls simply because President Obama did not attack Romney on Bain Capital, on outsourcing of American jobs, on laying off American workers, on calling for the auto industry to go bankrupt, on tax evasion, on saying its not his job to worry about 47% of the American people, on saying that he's not concerned about the poor because there's a safety net for them, on saying that he likes to fire people, on Massachusetts being 47th in job growth, on saying its not worth moving heaven and earth to find Bin Laden...???

So doesn't President Obama get any credit at all for stabilizing the American economy, for saving the auto industry, for creating 5.2 million private jobs, for saving 2.2 million public sector jobs, for making healthcare affordable for all Americans, for reforming Wall Street to safeguard against another catastrophic economic meltdown, for ending the illegitimate Iraqi war, for setting a deadline to end the Afghan war, for getting rid of Osama Bin Laden and other al Qaeda operatives, for restoring our image, trust and credibility abroad...???

@ Blah blah –> 5.2m private sector jobs? To break it down so your kool-aid covered head understands it better, that's only 125k jobs each year over the last four years. Oh, wait! Almost ALL the jobs lost were high paying, highly skilled jobs. Oh, wait! Almost ALL the jobs gained back are low paying, unskilled labor in the 17-24 age group. You, my friend, are a retard. WMD's, prior to our second Invasion of Iraq it was stated that there is a good chance that the WMD's had been transfered to Syria, and wouldn't you know it 10 years down the line Syria is openly admiting it is hiding WMD's, let us not also forget that Sadam used WMD's on his own people. 2. Yes the Bush economy sucks, but Obama PROMISED un-employment would be under 6% by now, a failed promise. The proof is in the pudding, and the proof is that Obama is at best an ameture and must be removed from office. So which is more important Blah Blah, the country or Obama's fake persona?

Blah – Let me clap for you as we all know that you are a dem... You just run your mouth with no facts to back it up. Obama has not saved the auto industry for one of you wrong statements. Right now, the federal government owns 500,000,000 shares of GM, or about 26% of the company. It would need to get about $53.00/share for these to break even on the bailout, but the stock closed at only $20.21/share on Tuesday. This left the government holding $10.1 billion worth of stock, and sitting on an unrealized loss of $16.4 billion. Right now, the government’s GM stock is worth about 39% less than it was on November 17, 2010, when the company went public at $33.00/share. However, during the intervening time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has risen by almost 20%, so GM shares have lost 49% of their value relative to the Dow. This is old news, but you are a dem. just like your no brain president.

Actually there are threats on a daily basis, they were in the middle east which is hostile territory. A diplomat cannot do his job if an embassy is run as an armed camp which seems to be what people think should have happened, and we happen to be on the winning side of the revolution, in a country that was and basically is, grateful for our help in their revolution.

20/20 hindsight is easy, but an embassy is not there to be safe, it is there to engage other countries and their people in discourse. And the results of this attack was the libyans rising up against the militants to support us, and those militants peacefully disbanding.

We actually need to ensure if our enemy strikes our cheek, that we offer the other cheek. Of course that assumes our goal is actually peace and not just increasing and demonstrating our own power ( or just making our selves feel better about being americans ).

The fact is Ambassador Stevens knew the risk before he took the job. Just like anybody who is American in the Middle East. He assumed that risk. The same goes for military personnel and civilian contractors.

Actually I was in the army from 1990 to 1993, served in Desert Storm, and can say I learned a thing or two about being afraid and still doing what needs to be done. I am quite simply, grateful to be able to write this and to have a family.

I don't appreciate being accused of not being an american just because you don't like what i have to say.

It's ignorant assumptions like that which led to the riots in the middle east.

We need to learn what we have in common, how both sides share humanity, and sit down at the table of brotherhood together. That cannot happen if we live in fear with weapons drawn hiding in bunkers, we have to let our enemies learn their assumptions are wrong and americans are not the monsters we are made out to be in the arab media.

It's been hard to keep track of the Administration's many lies in this situation, which was the worst terror attack on U.S. interests since 9/11/2001. But in about two weeks, their narrative has gone from "spontaneous street demonstration sparked by a YouTube video" to "a coordinated military attack unprecedented in lethality and the number of armed people." And they expect all of us to believe it and move along. Congressional hearings start tomorrow.
