U.S. officials appear less certain of events ahead of Libya attack

U.S. officials appear less certain about what happened in Benghazi, Libya, just before the attack that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans last week.
"We certainly acknowledge contradictory information about whether there was a protest prior to the attack," a U.S. official told CNN on Thursday. "We're continuing to collect information and evaluate exactly what the circumstances were prior to the attack."
U.S. officials have been saying they believe, based on the intelligence, that the attack grew out of a spontaneous protest over a trailer for an anti-Muslim film that was circulating on the Internet, and there is no indication it was a planned attack. It is a contention that critics like Republican Sen. John McCain have said is hard to believe true given the extensive attack and the amount of weaponry involved.
Susan Rice, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, delivered the administration's assessment on a number of Sunday talk shows.
On CBS' "Face the Nation," Rice said, "Soon after that spontaneous protest began outside of our consulate in Benghazi, we believe that it looks like extremist elements, individuals, joined in that effort with heavy weapons of the sort that are, unfortunately, readily now available in Libya post- revolution. And that it spun from there into something much, much more violent."
But conflicting information about whether there really was a protest ahead of the attack calls into question whether the attack was planned.
National Counterterrorism Center Director Matthew Olsen told a Senate committee on Wednesday that he believed the attack fit the definition of a terrorist attack. Although he maintained the evidence so far indicated the attack was not planned, he was careful in describing just what officials knew about how it transpired and who was involved.
"The best information we have now, the facts we have now indicate this was an opportunistic attack on our embassy. The attack began and evolved and escalated over several hours," said Olsen. "It appears that individuals who were certainly well armed, seized on the opportunity that was presented as the events unfolded that evening into the morning hours of September 12th."
But both Olsen and White House Press Secretary Jay Carney added a new characterization to their account. Olsen said there was nothing specific indicating "significant advanced planning" and Carney on Thursday said there was no information to suggest "a significantly preplanned attack."
"It is, I think, self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack," Carney added.
A U.S. intelligence official on Thursday also seemed more cautious.
"Simply put, while everything is still under investigation, the available information suggests the protests in Cairo inspired what the attackers decided to do later that night in Benghazi," the official said. "Right now, this points to a plan that was hatched opportunistically that day. Of course, if credible new information suggests otherwise, the investigation will pursue those leads."
The source also told CNN that "the available information suggests a group of people gathered sometime before ten o'clock that night outside of the consulate. The mixture of the people involved, and who took part in the attack, is certainly going to be part of the investigation."
CNN's Arwa Damon, who has been in Benghazi this week, reports that on the night of September 11, a group of armed individuals showed up outside the consulate around 9:30 and a firefight had broken out within 30 minutes.
On Thursday, Libya's Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagur told Damon that eight people who are believed to be involved in carrying out the attack are now detained in Libya.
But he also said the evidence so far shows the attack was planned. Approximately 30 to 50 people took part and it was clearly organized, said the prime minister, but he added there was no one specific group behind the attack.

I have family in North Africa. My advice? Go to bed and rest peacefully and stop worrying. All this hoopla will die down. Al Queda is encouraging it, and it's promoted only from the very most un-educated parts of their societies–who are not the people that run things, I'm afraid. I've lived abroad for 11 years, and Americans now–almost anywhere in the world (and I lived in the EU) are targets for somebody stupid. Look at the American who was sentence for life in prison for killing her roomate in Italty. It took at least years to get her freed up and get some justice. ;-( There's a philosophy, even in England, that we are trigger happy, idiots who go into other countries without principles. If our "best friend" England thinks this, imagine what countries like this think, on the whole. I would, however, caution you, in case you thought killing these people would help. Remember Algeria? The French went after them with a stick and they LOST. You can't just say you are "going into" someone else's country when the people of that country (Libya) largely support us!! You would be silly to do that just because of the fools that rocketed the Embassy. Trust me, they are neither representative of 5 % of their countrymen, nor are they people you can reason with. Better to ignore their protest and build more drones and ask their governments to help us find the people on the cameras that did this.
How is murdering a bunch of innocent Libyans - who actually are friendly to us and risked their lives to protest the death of the ambassador, tried to rescue him, and continue to work with us - going to help anything?
Chris Stevens himself believed strongly in the cause of a free Libya and friendship between the US and Libya and died trying to achieve that. If we abandon that, then it was all for nothing.
You have to give the investigation time to work out. Read the book "The Black Banners" by former FBI Agent Ali Soufan, which tells the story of a very similar investigation into the USS Cole in Yemen. Our greatest enemy in the investigation into the Cole proved to be ourselves "getting tough".

again, what i was expressing was merely an emotional feeling, nothing based on sound logic or reason.
but it is concerning and i felt i should mention something. emotions can override our logic too easily, and if i'm feeling this way, i can only imagine how some other people may be feeling.

Apparently you haven't been keeping up with the news. This video came out in july, WAY before september. Why didn't the muslim world erupt then? Radical terrorists started making this video go viral all over the middle east a couple days before 911. In Egypt, it wasn't just the video that started the protests, it also had to do with the blind sheikh, and a radical cleric demanded protests to demand his release. The egyptian gov't wants him released, a terrorists involved in the 93 trade center bombing. Yet you don't see that being stated in the state run media do you?
In addition, the ambassador stevens believed he was a on a terrorist hit list in Lybia, his motorcade was attacked earlier this year, geez, I wonder why he must have thought that. Other terrorist attacks occurred in the Benhazi area, and stevens was quite concerned about the situation in that area, but guess what? The WH didn't deem these security threats enough of a concern to beef up security. You know what you do. CNN.... you have crossed the line....I have no longer respect for your organization. I am a teacher. I study history. I know full well how certain buzz words and angles of stories have motivated people and led them blindly into false revolutions such as Che in Cuba. You understand sociology very well. Your focus is vivid. More and more highly educated and open minded people whom I talk to also share the same concerns over your journalism. They all used to trust you, as I did. Your news station was something we always enjoyed turning to and it really had become part of our daily routine since the 80's. But now, it is very disturbing to see how you all have allowed this type of journalism. You are protecting the president and his party so much. It is so obvious that you have now lost respect of so many. I'm usually an optimistic person and will find good and reflect on areas of improvement in all parts of American life, however, this now scares me. I used to count of you all for the truth..no matter how much I liked it or didn't ..or how the truth would or would not affect my personal agenda.... but I counted on you all for the truth. This has now changed.

According to resent reports Venezuela has been supplying Iran with F-16s in an ominous arms trade that should make the rest of the world very queasy.
And a federal indictment filed yesterday makes us wonder if any of those F-16 parts came from our back yard.Four South Floridians are charged with illegally exporting a litany of parts for fighter jets and helicopters– particularly F-16s - for sale to the Venezuelan Air Force.
Where was the conspiracy allegedly based? Out of the Venezuelan Military Acquisitions Office in Doral, Florida. Apparently, allowing a nation run by a hostile dictator to operate a weapons-buying office near Downtown Miami is as bad an idea as it sounds.Venezuelan Air Force officer Alberto Pichardo worked out of the acquisitions office. He conspired with former Venezuelan pilot and Pembroke Pines resident Freddy Arguelles to buy a list of military aircraft and missile detonation parts, according to their indictment filed in Florida Southern District Court.
Their locally-based alleged co-conspirators included Hialeah Gardens aircraft parts trader Victor Brown and Kirk Drellich, owner of Davie's SkyHigh Accessories. (Its website brags that it is "fully export compliant." We left a message for Drellich with the receptionist at that office.)In covert meetings in Madrid, Spain, and this Fort Lauderdale address that is disturbingly close to a US Army Reserve Center, Pichardo, Arguelles, and an unidentified co-conspirator arranged to purchase from Drellich a shopping list of military aircraft equipment for the Venezuelan Air Force from 2008 through 2010.The parts, according to the indictment, included such items as cartridge assemblies, detonation transfer assemblies, radar antennas, rocket motor canopy jettison, and oxygen masks.
Two unidentified co-conspirators also engineered the $3.43 million purchase of two T56 jet engines from another company, using shell corporations in Spain and Florida.The equipment was then exported to Venezuela. That was a violation of the Arms Export Control Act, which requires a special license to export any goods on the United States Munition List. If found guilty, the defendants could face up to five to ten years for the violations, along with fines of up to $1,000,000 for each violation.
The indictment does not specify what became of the parts which reached Venezuela. But Israel's Haaretz has reported that Venezuela has supplied Iran with at least one "F-16 jet "in preparation for a possible Israeli or U.S. strike on its nuclear facilities."

My understanding is that the plane that didn't make it was not too far away from being shot down. They didn't really play that up because of the harshness of the reality but the jets that had scrambled had the green light...

The troubling fact however is that the f-16s on the kill mission were over the Atlantic as they were oddly misdirected on 911. Intercepting a passenger plane is child's play for a what mach 3 jet fighter. BUt on this day it took 80 mins for jets to scramble rather than the usual 2 to scramble and less than 10 to intercept. But we don't blame bush for that, or cheiny for running drills on 911 that distracted our air force while we were under attack.

I have to say, I just read through alot of ignorant comments and majority of you dont know what the hell you are talking about. One lady said, "Obama didn't have our embassies properly secured". ?!?!?!?!?!? As if thats his job! The security of embassies is the responsibility of the host country. Also the State Department is involved in that process. Thats why we have different branches of government and each branch has its own directives. The President of any country (maybe except Russia) never has full power of anything. I find majority of peoples comments very taxing; irritating. The one thing I do agree with is the media has outsourced real journalism. Its not just CNN. Its all the major U.S. news services that provide us with "news". Obama did NOT have our embassies secured properly. There was not enough security there. And, the majority of the Marines who were there, were given rubber bullets.
