'Full-court press' to protect American embassies

By Elise Labott

Fearing protests after Friday Muslim prayers could turn violent, the Obama administration is engaged in an all-out effort to secure American diplomatic facilities overseas.

In the wake of Tuesday's attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and protests at U.S. embassies in Cairo, Egypt, and Yemen in response to a video by an American filmmaker, officials say all diplomatic posts overseas have been instructed to beef up security in advance of Friday's prayers

"We are in a full-court press at every single one of the posts in the Middle East and anywhere else there is any chance of demonstrations after Friday services to make sure nothing bad happens. And to have the security in place in case bad things do happen," one senior official said. "We are talking to every senior person, in Washington and at post to make certain as much security is in place any place we think there could be a threat or a demonstration."

Friday prayers have consistently been a flashpoint for protests throughout the Arab spring.

President Obama said Wednesday he instructed all diplomatic posts to review their security posture and ensure they have the resources they need. Such reviews are common before holidays, such as the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

"But we are looking at our security again in light of all of these events, the post-9/11 environment, the video that has been on the Internet, the protests and of course Libya with an eye toward Friday protests," the official said.

Officials said that in the wake of the Libya attack and the embassy protests, numerous high-level meetings have taken place over the past 36 hours addressing embassy security, including at the cabinet level including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

"We are holding a review and making assessments based on the posts and the intelligence community," the senior administration official said. "And we are telling them if you need anything, speak up."

Officials said the administration is also casting a wide net to send messages of calm, reaching out to imams and other credible voices in the United States and abroad. The administration is also engaged in an extensive campaign to inform Muslims that the video was not endorsed by the United States government. The effort began Thursday morning with a statement from Clinton denouncing the film as "disgusting and reprehensible."

Diplomats have also taken to social media and online Arabic websites to speak about Washington's rejection of the film within the context of freedom of expression.

Been reading about or watching wars in the name of religion all my life – guess that's why I don't have one either. As for Obama's handling of this, since the movie had been out there so long, I would not have accepted it as the impetus in the first place given the timing of attacks. That would have been the first thing out of my mouth to the US & the World. Second would have been Americans have rights to free speech and we will defend that as necessary. Third, would have been free people often don't like what each other say but we don't get to murder each other over it. Only after touting our freedoms would I have expressed an opinion the dude in Alabama or wherever is an unfortunate product of his own experiences and not representative of me or necessarily of other Americans. Is our way of life important or not? Seems like a lot of people around the world are clammering to live it, wherever they are. Seems like talking about that first thing would have been politically more helpful, especially for that important and rather large group of people over there who do not agree with the rioters or religious nuts around them too. I do hope, however, there is no more silly talk about cuts to the American military. Water and food shortages are very real now in these regions and going to really get severe in 10 years, causing a whole new set of challenges. Don't care to comment on Ronmey – he's not the President and he didn't have access to his resources or command, althougth I understand Romney will now be kept fully briefed on foreign affairs.

  4. Common Sense

The root problem is the fanatical belief in religion....any religion. Americans run around saying "god save us" or extorting others to "pray" for help in times of crisis. Fanatics blow up abortion clinics or start shooting sprees at churches of other faiths in the name of their god. Middle east extremists blow up buildings or buses in the name of theirs while screaming about Allah. It's all the same problem...until humanity as a species gives up the ignorance and mythological beliefs of the past, there will never be peace or progress. Praying or begging some unseen and imaginary deity to solve our problems is simply a convenient excuse for us not to have to make the hard choices or undertake the work to fix them ourselves. Use your brains people and stop depending on fairy tales. How many wars have to be fought or brave men and women die before we wake up and throw off ignorance in favor of intelligent thought and common sense?

INDIA: Between two Deities: KALI & PANCHALI

The problem with India is that is built on a system of cultural and societal values based on Hinduism which is a cult. Nations built on a cult seldom survive in the long run. Now just take a look at these two Hindu goddesses and the destruction and lack of morality they represent.

Goddess Kali's statue stands naked astride the inanimate body of the Hindu deity Shiva, tongue stuck out with blood dripping from fang-like teeth. She holds a noose, a skull-topped staff, a blood-encrusted sword and a severed head. Disgusting, to say the least. Would you want your kids growing up with such inspiration?

Meanwhile, goddess Panchali was married to five brothers. Which one would become the legitimate father of his child should she have one? Dr Charles (renowned author and an authority on India) says that instances of incest are common in Hindu scriptures. Decadent ! Immoral !

Talk about being between a terrorist and a tramp !!

Hinduism is a 'cult', as opposed to , say, any other religion?? Oh, sorry, I'm sure whatever religion you belong to is the
'one, true religion'. Right? Your knowledge of vedic deities leaves a lot to be desired, as does your apparent level of intelligence. I'm not Hindu, but have read some of Upanishad and Bhagavad Gita, and the latter, along with the Sikhs' Sri Guru Granth Sahib, were THE most impressive scripture I've read.. and pal, I've read them all.

And there's no incest in the Abrahamic Faiths...Abraham married his half sister Sarah, Lot had carnal relations with his daughters, and Jesus was a descendant of Lot.. What about Greek Mythology... full of incest, and at one point in history Zeus was a 'real' god, not a myth... ever hear of symbolism, allegory, metaphor?

INDIA: On a Goat and a Stick:

The problem with India is that is built on a system of cultural and societal values based on Hinduism which is a cult. Nations built on a cult seldom survive in the long run. You can only take it so far based on symbolisms of a goat and a stick with a skinny little man aka gandhi banging boys at night and spinning wheels during daytime.

I continue to read with interest the thesis presented on CNN that India is “Too Big To Succeed” in a socio-politico context. Although experts adopted this in an economic context, geo-political connotations are indeed powerful. Empowering subjugated minorities in India by splitting it into smaller states would trigger uber economic demand for western nations who have given so much financial and technology aid to India with no return to show for the investment. I concur with this approach and find the premise to be on solid footing. Central Asian States (CAS) are a case in point on this successful approach. We need to understand that India has an unmanageable large population mired in poverty and we are spinning our wheels trying to feed it. It is also too big of a geographical unit to govern and for democracy to take traction.

It's time to close down the embassies temporarily and call our boys home, along with any financial aid to Egypt, Yemen, Libya, and Iraq until they can ensure security. But even then, we should leave for a minimum of 30 days. Egypt needs to be taught that we don't condone violence against our Embassy and cut off all money pending a formal apology from Morsy. Let his military overthrow his a$$ if he wants to play sycophant to the Brotherhood and ignore his obligations and responsibilities. This is a perfect opportunity for us to use this as an excuse and cut off free money. Why should we forgive them $1 billion in debt just because they elected a "democratic" government that is good for them? That's like paying someone not to sit in their poop.

Where were the Marine embassy guards to help protect the people inside? Why do we need the local government to provide protection for our diplomats inside our embassy.. If an embassy is in theory US soil why can't we protect ourselves with own own guards. hope someone can shed some light.

Because it is usually the duty of the host country to provide security to other countries embassies. Look at China, even they post guards at US embassies even when they flame the population to march and demonstrate outside US embassies. But they have hundreds of soldiers and plainclothes police hidden to prevent things from going out of control. If people break windows, it's because the government allowed it to show their disapproval.

Therefore, these sorry excuses for host countries need to learn the same thing. Bear in mind, all these countries take money from us already, so it's contingent that the least they can do is provide security for our embassies. Especially when they see protests already, they need to beef up their security forces BEFORE anything happens, not after.

There are a handful of Marines at the embassy, but they are nor intended nor capable of fending off a massive angry mob of locals. You can virtually guarantee the if those Marines end up killing a protester, even a violent one, that they would end up completely over run. You'll see outrage on the Right from conservatives regarding the lack of armed response by the Marines. They don't understand that diplomatic missions must RELY on the host country for security.

To label insults against a man or his writings as blasphemy IS blasphemy.

Man is not God, thus insults against a man cannot be blasphemous. To claim that they are is to deify the man, which is blasphemy.

The reason people aren't for Repubs is because you project hate toward everything. You vote no on everything. Even try denying voting rights to minorities for fear the black guy with the African name might win. In a country where races are mixing everyday. Republicans with the old ideas of white picket fence American Leave it to Beaver traditions will be extinct. RESPECT GOES BOTH WAYS. Prejudice is played out. The same ignorace that holds back prosperity in the Middle East. Will hold back The Republican party. It only takes one of you to make the rest of you look like a joke. Obama just allowed every illegal immigrant to live here for FREE!!!!!!!!!! Plus gave them citizenship rights. Why not make them citizens? because he really does not want them here, he does just want their votes. He knows its the only way he can win since he's been fumbling everything up. Embassies aren't military reservations, they are diplomatic missions. There are severe limitations to how well they can be protected if the host country doesn't fulfill it's obligations to protect them. The Full court press they are talking about primarily refers to diplomatic pressure. They arent parachuting troops and weapons into these facilities. If the host country won't secure our embassy then we pull the diplomats out and send the drones in.

These idiots do not realize that the only reason they beat Communist Russia is Afghanistan is because of the U.S. If they would have lost the war there would not be Islam in Afghanistan. Then you have morons like the Iranian leaders that are kissing the feet of the Russians. Where were the Russians when there was Genocide against Muslims in Serbia? This Pseudo Islamic Fascist movement needs to recognize that if the West is not there fighting for their rights, then someone else is going to come along and take away all their rights. Most of these preceeding posts are truly pitiful in their ignorance. I am a retired Foreign Service Officer who spent 25 years in the Middle East, including postings in Kuwait, Lebanon, Iraq, Tunisia, Jordan, and Morocco. In Baghdad in the spring of 1979, much of the region erupted in protests against the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. Saddam Hussein was just vice president then, but he sent the Republican Guard Presidential battalion to surround our little embassy, which wasn't really an embassy then but just a mere Interest Sections. We flew the Belgian flag from the roof as they were our Protecting Power. Even though crowds of hundreds of thousands marched by two blocks away, none of them came anywhere near our buildings. The reality of the Middle East is far different than most ignorant Americans believe. Sadly, GWBush and Dick Cheney and their cohorts were among those ignorant ones. We are still paying a heavy price for their ignorance and incompetence.

Thank you for inserting sanity and civility into this rambunctious "debate". I, too, have lived many years in the Middle East and have come to respect the local people and their viewpoints. However, all those who flippantly bring their so-called opinions to this board have most likely not ever left their county, not to speak left the US or traveled to the Middle East.
It is simply disgusting to read these responses; alas they do reflect today's narrow minded, isolationist voters, who – by selecting their leaders – also select the future of our politics towards the world. America is not the "one size fits all" for the world! Disrespect for other cultures will not solve our problems, rather will amplify our own defects.

America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.

In 1953, America overthrow Iran's democratic government and installed a brutal dictator Shah of Iran. America helped Shah to established secret police and killed hundreds of thousands of Iranians.

During Iran-Iraq war, America helped Saddam Hussein and killed one million Iranians. America is the only country that shot down Iran's civilian air plain and killed all 290 passengers.

In 2003, America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and displaced 4,000,000+ Iraqi people.
Now, America is a failed country with huge debt. Its debt will be 24 trillion by 2015.

Every other day a city in America is declaring bankruptcy. ha ha ha ha ha ha

The GREATEST MUSLIM APOLOGIST who's Hoodwinking Americans (MIS) guiding Pres. Obama is CNN's Mr. FAREED ZAKARIA.....who's in reality a CLOSET SYMPAHISER of these Islamists and poses a GREAT DANGER to America.

So, if any one has any doubts about which way US policy to the Muslim world is headed???????????????????

    Just imagine the HEIRARCHY!

    1) PRESIDENT – Mr. Barack HUSSAIN Obama

    2) US SEC. OF STATE: The DECEITFUL Islamist Mr. Fareed Zakaria (as it's strongly rumored to be...if Obama wins re-election).

    3) US AMABASSADOR TO THE OIC (Organization of Islamic Conference): MB terrorist supporter RASHAD HUSSAIN (another fellow Indian Muslim like Mr. Zakaria!)

    4) US GOODWILL AMBASSADOR TO THE MUSLIM WORLD: IMAM RAUF (Imam of the 9/11 CARDOBA VICTORY MOSQUE- Decietfully renamed – Interfaith Center to tide over New Yorker's opposition!)

    5) DY. CHIEF OF STAFF at the US STATE DEPT – HUMA ABEIDIN – Daughter of MB activist Saleha Mahmood Abedin

    GOD SAVE AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Embassies worldwide are all on heightened alert for each 9/11 anniversary. You don't hear about the details, do you? Why? Because, you goofs, releasing details is to lower security! Do you really think you "know" it all?????

This is the first U.S. Ambassador to die since 1973 . We lost four Brave American patriots , this is so... Frustrating. The media is this country is a sham. An American can get more credible news from Pravda , Canada Free Press , the Independent , then they can get in their own country. Hannity was right, Journalism is dead . Were it not for the Internet sites like Drudge, FOX , the Blaze , we the people would be completely ignorant for what's happening in our own borders. Current day in America , has more than a few parallels with Hitlers Nazi Germany , only the killings aren't happening yet. WAKE UP AMERICA

The American people live in a dream state. We have exploited the Middle East for decades, either for Cold War purposes or for oil. U.S. history is full of wars of aggression for either expansion or natural resources, or to "fight communism". The Arab people are fighting back, and Americans don't have a clue. But, don't worry, like George Bush said – they only hate us because of our "freedom".

You sir, are an idiot if you believe this is the "arab people fighting back." These are people who, in the midst of daily violence and death across the region, decide that a youtube video is the reason they need to burn down our embassy. This version of Islam renders its followers completely unable to function in new testament times, let alone the modern world.

The same tired oil line. You do realise that in any given year the middle east only supplies between 12 – 25% of our oil market and over half of that comes from saudi arabia. Oh and the war liberals love to calim was over oil did not land us any advantage in oil contracts. Look up the oil auctions in iraq over the last 4 years the writing is on the wall. Look up the big 6 oil fields in iraq americans companies owna partial share of one field, russia and china are far more dependent on their oil and it shows in the market. I guess you can call it "using them" to fight the cold war if you consider helping afganistan not be invaded by the russians "using them". Was it mutually beneficial at the time ? Absolutely, but without the assistance chances are theyd be yet another crumbling remnant of the iron curtain. Your statements make great political propaganda, they just lack the backing of reality. The middle east hates us because we are not muslim, they think muslims should rule the world from one pole to the other. That and because they're people are brainwashed ona dialy basis and lack impartial views of the world around them.

Evacuate all the Embassies. Tell Americans in the countries to leave......and make sure they know if they don't leave that they are on their own. I see no reason to be in these countries anymore. They need to figure it all out for themselves. Not that I support the religious zealots here in America either...... I'd just as soon put a gun in their hands and deposit them on the foreign shores of these same countries and let them duke it out for the end of the world. I prefer however that they not take the rest of us non-religious folks out with them.

Isn't CNN reporting on the report from British paper , Independent ?? The Independent is reporting senior officials at the state department had credible information 48 hours in advance trouble was brewing . This information was not reported to the Embassy's which might have prevented these deaths .. The Marines were not even allowed live ammo in their guns. Ambassador Stevens was missing for over 8hours, where was the president ? Sleeping. We have an international crisis going on and we have a president who is too busy to be concerned because he has to go pander for money and votes around the country ! Tell me Obama supporters , how in the hell can you possibly support such a pathetic leader !? How do you sleep at night. This guy is a walking, talking disaster. You've gotta be insane to support a man of such low caliber ! While the media fails to hold Obama accountable for mishandling this crisis, they attack Romney, who is the only one looking like a leader. PATHETIC

      Obama is a LOSER.

He came into office with NO QUALIFICATIONS whatsoever to be president. And he has acquired none on the job. He is naive and very, very ignorant.

When Barbara Walters asked him to name one of his faults, he told her he is "lazy." No kidding. And that's not the least of it.

For god's sake people. It's not that hard to do your own research to see if something you heard is true or not. It only takes the amount of time it takes you to sit down and write this drivel.

The Pentagon has denied the report by some Right-wing outlets and blogs claiming those Marines at our embassies were prevented ammo. Seriously. This is pathetic. Unless of course you know it's a lie but decided to spread it anyways. That's even worse!

There seems to be speculation that the state dept may have had credible reports, 48 hours prior to the attacks of the embassies, of possible violent protests. They did nothing to increase security. What I find even more unbelieving the fact it was on September 11th and nothing was done to be prepared for this kind of thing. Someone dropped the ball. This is the 1st time since 2001 that US territory has been attacked by foreign terrorists and succeeded. This is really a sad day.

This IS a very sad day.

But then again, every single day that our pathetically unqualified, ill-prepared, pretend "president' has been in office has been a sad day for America.

Obama has got to go. He needs to go back to doing something he's qualified for - stirring up poor people in Chicago to demand more freebies from the government. He was pretty good at that.

Thats a common misconception, embassy's are NOT US soil. The host country never gives up any land to an embassy, they simply grant special powers to it but the embassy's status can be revoked.

Ok, now you've tipped your hand. Every post on this port bashing Obama for this is the same Right-wing nut job posting this drivel over and over again.

In this time of national tragedy, your guy, Romney, fell all over himself in a rush to put out a statement while these tragic events were still unfolding. Why? All because he wanted to beat the sitting POTUS to the punch.

THAT, is not the mark of a true leader. In fact, he might have jeopardized the administration's attempt to deal with the situation. He actually brought back a nightmare from 9 years ago, when our then so-called "leader" made the exact same rush judgment and took us to an unnecessary war that has cost us dearly in blood and treasure.

It was not time to play politics. Sorry, but Romney is not presidential material. By now everyone can see he is so desperate to hold that power, he will say and do anything for it including abandoning our values, coming together when a national tragedy such as this unfolds just like we did after 9/11. How soon we forget!

Really SUBTLE? You voted for a guy that had never sponsored legislation and say Romney is unqualified? The only reason Obama has a foreign policy is bc of Hillary. Who do you think pulled the trigger on the Usama bin Laden operation?

Do you know anything about leadership? Have you ever led men or women in combat? Have you served in the military or just sat your happy ass here in the US behind our borders and enjoyed the freedom you were lucky enough to be born into?

"Beat the sitting POTUS to the punch." looks like Mitt could have waited a few days to beat him to the punch – how are Leno, JayZ and Beyonce doing? Way more important than delivering a response for the atrocities that happened and will continue to if we show weakness.

You keep your hope & change, SUBTLE, I'll keep my guns & ammo.
