Iran's new super-fast naval gunships

The aircraft carrier the USS Stennis will start heading back to the Middle East next week, returning ahead of schedule to meet any new threats from Iran. The move comes amid tensions over Iran's nuclear program and new signs that Iran is boosting its own naval capability. CNN senior international correspondent Dan Rivers has the details.

All I want to know is whether or not it's faster than the bullets from a CIWS....

I wonder if they're fast enough to outrun one of our missiles and it's a boat, not a ship by any stretch of the imagination. They' ll make great target practice for the Warthogs 40mm cannons aslo.

This boat could not mount any weapons larger than a machine gun or short range shoulder-fired rocket. It would be blown away by a ship-mounted Gatling gun.

Warthogs typically do not fly naval missions, as they are not carrier-capable. Personally, I'd love to see the Phalanx anti-missle system be manually operated to obliterate this thing...same type of cannon, just different vehicle.

I still see they have not add bar armor to the design as told them to (just some advice). Now a hare travels at 70km and with a .22M can be taken out with a head shot at 120 meters.

So we looked at the swarming and went asymmetrical, we though of using the Javelin, but required more distance so the SPIKE NLOS was developed. So going back to the Hare and 70km, 120 meters, the Barrett .50, MK 19 40mm machine gun, GAI-19/A machine gun, Phalanx C-RAM. The Iranians are fast and unstable we are slow and stable so the objective was to use that to your advantage, by setting up interlocking fields of fire in each quadrant (kill zone) In conjunction with traditional naval ship defense, Phalanx CIWS etc. Other than the development of the SPIKE NLOS the solution was cost effective an used current technology which was available. Not my idea got from a report by Rand on using the Javelin on swarming tactics for ground warfare.

Admiral Jackie Fisher solved the problem of fast little boats over 100 years ago, inventing the "Torpedo Boat Destroyer" with fast firing small guns to blow little boats out of the water before they could launch torpedoes. Of course aircraft detect fast boats long before they get within range of any carrier, and also have the ability to take these fast but fragile boats out too. The only way this works is is a combatant hides behind non-combatants- a war crime. The Geneva convention does not protect combatants based on the proximity of non-combatants, rather, protection normally granted to non-combatants is removed by the presence of a combatant, so there is no legal incentive for war crimes.

Love how people think that that these boats are going to be easy pickins. Iranians could employ the swarm tactic. Send 20 of these at a naval ships. If they cripple a US destroyer or worse a cruiser, losing 10 of the ships would be worth it. My money is on them doing a mixed fleet. with these buzzing forward armed with some sort of anti-ship weapon with heavier ship standing off to fire heavier weapon. Which ships would you engage. They could easily overwhelm slow US ships. Most US ship carry on 2 CIWS and at most 4 .50 cal crew served weapons. These ships ride too low in the water for missiles, and the 5in guns proved in effective vs these types of boats in the past. it's like trying to swat a fly with a hammer.

If you guys think these are a joke, pray you never have to stop laughing.

If Iran wanted peace, it could permit inspectors at their nuclear facilities. If they do not permit such inspectors, then Iran wants war, and is well on the way to reaching their desire. When the 12th Iman wakes from his nap, he will find that any remaining people are really mad at him.

don, Iran may "permit inspectors" when the u.s. "permits inspectors" from China and Russia to make sure it's not cheating on it's arms control treaties. If the u.s. doesn't "permit inspectors" then surely it's hiding something, in which case China and Russia must send their ICBM's topped with 10 mirvs per and destroy the u.s., and all rodents the likes of you... Your thinking makes sense? Cowards.

Don't have money to spend on improving education but have money to fight war with some country that is not threat to us. How long can we afford to keep on fighting wars for oil.

My take....leave Iran alone. Why bother. We do not know if they will attack any country. We do not know if they are making any N. bombs. Just be prepared that if they attack any country, we respond with full force to ensure they don't attack any country again. We did that against Iraq in 1st Gulf war and it worked. Saddam did not have any big weapons after that war. Same to be done here. Pre-emptive strike is a stupid idea and only fools will support it....oh yes and maybe those who benefit from un-warranted wars.

I am going to take my speedboat and put a few guns on it. Now I have the technology to join the Iranian navy!!! Please let us not exaggerate these ships capabilities. Iran is using this strategy because they have few options. These boats will be easy targets for helicopters and A-10's because they have no air defense and can be scuttled by the smallest missle.

Don't you think Iranians are hundreds of times more determined? You are not courageous going to someone else's land and dropping bombs from the air. We saw American soldies crying on the ground looking for their mommies, and returning home suicidal and psychotics. This shows the true nature of apparently robust, in fact weakish American soldier. Iranians cry when they pray to their God, but never one cried on the battlefield. For more than thirty years, we played every trick to tackle them and the result : They got stronger!!! If you think proportionately, they did in 30 thirty years and despite all the difficulties we created for them more than what America did in 200 years. You forgot to mention, after the grammatical errors, that the same person also instructed Americans to "learn to write in our own mother language." Like we have one...

Also, I'm going to correct his statement:

Iran learned in 30 years of stealing technologies, what America spent 200 years of research and ingenuity to develop.

You are not courageous going into an area of conflict, and dropping bombs from the air. You are intelligent, reducing casualties on both sides by using precision guided equipment to destroy only that which you want to.

For more than 30 years we have abused our soldiers trying to harden them, but instead created a military force that at a single sign of weakness is more likely to turn on us, than to attack the "enemy."

Iranians cry when they pray to their God, but never one cried on the battlefield because the last time we were on a battlefield was when we tried a sneak attack against Israel, and after they annihilated our forces we turned tail and ran away leaving our ally, Egypt, to pay the price for our failure. By the way, Egypt is no longer our ally. I wonder why...

In conclusion while we have some very good war toys, yours exceed our abilities which is why we don't want a war. Your country is a collection of many cultures, therefore it doesn't have a mother language. Remember Vietnam and don't make the same mistake twice, ensure that you have a goal when going into war.

Will this person actually attempt to wake up and learn that while America isn't the "best" country in the world we WILL protect ourselves, our property, and our allies from ALL threats, foreign and domestic, and protect our way of life?

You are living in the past Tam. In a real war where the US really uses it capabilities, Iran would not last very long. Vietnam, Iraq and the others were fought with many "engagement rules" that tied our hands. That won't happen in future wars and your tinpot powers, like Iran, won't be able to compete at all.

Judging by your "in a real war" comment, you're referring to using nukes against a country like Iran. In which case, in a "real" scenario like that, big countries, like China and Russia, will be added to the equation.. And those countries, as you know, have enough nukes to obliterate the u.s. many times over.. What's your point here?

  16. Not navy-on-navy! Mortars vs. Oil Tankers

None of these posts address Iran's real goal here. They're not going to face off against the US Navy, these boats are perfect for a fast-attack on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, which is EXACTLY what Iran has said they will do if they feel threatened. No way can we prevent it unless we completely blockade Iran's shoreline.
Also, these aren't rocket launchers, they're notoriously inaccurate mortar launchers. But more than effective against a LCC (Large Crude Carrier, aka supertanker), you can't miss one even at half a mile. 1 LCC could block the Strait for weeks, possibly even months before traffic could resume.

Agreed, no one in the armed forces of Iran in their right mind would take on a US Navy carrier battle group, however these vessels look ideal for harassing cargo vessels whether oil or otherwise. That would be the stated goal here.

Let's make everyone pay the true cost at the pump and we'd be wean off foreign oil pretty quick. The alternative energy subsidies are an extremely small fraction of true subsidized energy cost and wouldn't even be needed in a free market.

I am amazed at how many people keep talking about Warthogs and Blackhawks and other non-naval platforms with mini guns shooting these boats. First off people, the Seahawk (naval Blackhawk) does not use mini guns. It uses a M-60 on the SH-60B model, but the helicopter is used in an anti-submarine role. Also the majority of combat jets use the M-61 Vulcan 20mm Gatling. If an aircraft carrier, amphibious ship or other combat ship doesn't carry the model of jet or helicopter you keep posting, you are automatically talking out your tailpipe and have no clue.

Target practice indeed. One shot from a Barrett M107 could easily disable one of these boats. This is what the rifle was designed for, and the USCG uses them to take out drug smuggling boats. Two dollars a round is hardly going to bankrupt the U.S.

Fast attack boats such as these were used in Naval war games and the American who commanded that simulation actually WON the encounter with Navy ships far larger. It so embarrassed the Navy that they reset the game. There is no reset in real life.

These boats aren't going to get within 300 miles let alone 5 miles of a carrier battle group. But that is not their purpose; swarming attacks on large tankers and making swarm/suicide runs on American Destorers assigned to close escort duty in the Straights of Ormuz is what these craft were designed for and excel at.

India has become too big to govern or create any value for western countries or even for its own population. We have invested a lot of resources in India over the past two decades and given a lot of aid to prop it up. There has been no investment on this return. Instead India has squandered all the resources in building nuclear weapons while poverty remains rampant in the country. We need to revisit our relationship with India. American taxpayers will not tolerate this anymore. We need to take care of our own populace going forward. We cannot be exporting jobs to India or giving it financial or technical handouts.

Neat idea! Poor-man navy force! Not bad for a weak country to face off a much more powerful navy force. Imagine hundreds of this speedboat launched at the same time from all directions could cause a very hectic and confusing scene. Coupled with ability to launch missiles, they could be a very dangerous force. Unlike air defense, where it costs a lot more and takes much longer training cycle, they could be replaced quickly and cheaply in terms of both production and crew training. If the boat can float over the water to eliminate drag, it could be as fast as an airplane.

Islam is the greatest killer of all time, worse than Christianity, fascism or communism.
Islamic jihad destroyed a Christian Middle East and a Christian North Africa. Soon it was the fate of the Persian Zoroastrian and the Hindu to be the victims of jihad. The history of political Islam is the destruction of Christianity in the Middle East, Egypt, Turkey and North Africa. Half of Christianity was lost. Before Islam, North Africa was the southern part of Europe (part of the Roman Empire). Around 60 million Christians were slaughtered during the jihadic conquest. Half of the glorious Hindu civilization was annihilated and 80 million Hindus killed. The first Western Buddhists were the Greeks descended from Alexander the Great's army in what is now Afghanistan. Jihad destroyed all of Buddhism along the silk route. About 10 million Buddhists died. The conquest of Buddhism is the practical result of pacifism. Zoroastrianism was eliminated from Persia. The Jews became permanent dhimmis throughout Islam. In Africa over 120 million Christians and animists have died over the last 1400 years of jihad. Approximately 270 million nonbelievers died over the last 1400 years for the glory of political Islam. These are the Tears of Jihad which are not taught in any school.

"History makes it clear however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races is one of the most fantastically absurd myths that historians have ever repeated." –De Lacy O'Leary, ISLAM AT THE CROSSROADS, London, 1923, p. 8.

“The Christian World came to wage crusades against Muslims but eventually knelt before them to gain knowledge. They were spellbound to see that Muslims were owners of a culture that was far superior to their own. The Dark Ages of Europe were illuminated by nothing but the beacon of Muslim Civilization.” (F.J.C Hearushaw, The Science of History.)

“The Renaissance of Europe did not take place in the 15th century. Rather it began when Europe learned from the culture of the Arabs. The cradle of European awakening is not Italy. It is the Muslim Spain.” (Robert Briffault, The Making Of Mankind)

“The lies which we [Christians] have heaped round this man (Mohammed), are disgraceful to ourselves only.” (Thomas Carlyle, Heroes and Hero Worship)

“Muhammed was the most successful of all religious personalities.” (Encyclopedia Britannica, 4th & 11th editions)

“The greatest crimes, the greatest “sin” of Mohammed in the eyes of Christian West is that he did not allow himself to be slaughtered, to be “crucified” by his enemies. He only defended himself, his family and his followers; and finally vanquished his enemies. Mohammed’s success is the Christians’ gall of disappointment… He did not believe in any vicarious sacrifices for the sins of others.” (Edward Gibbon, Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.)

So Reymond SHINboZZo,by your count if I understand the UNIVERSE existed on the lone side let's call it Heaven and there was peace and just peace.None saw or knew before the advent of ISLAM what killing was about, what was War like, what Oppression meant, nobody knew before ISLAM came into play. All the religions and civilization lived in totally Harmony, love was in th air, love was in the Hearts and mind and thats how all the rules of the world were played by.Then all of a sudden everything changed.Islam came and it killed all the goodies of the time gone by.Shame on you bozo,is this how you will love to be called a human with brains.
If you were so write in blaming Islam for all the evils then tell me how much you know who christians, the good old Hindus and Bhuddists and others replaced and establised their reign and religious code as there must have been someone else before the came into being or do you even believe that it was all these above civilizations that existed. Was Islam always there that when ever a good thing would happen to the world,it will simply come in and kill it with impunity.
Was Egyption civilization destroyed by Islam 3000 yrs back,Was Greek Empire the victim of Islam which did not existed at that time or Was Roman empire destroyed by them.
The only thing I assume from your rehtoric and claims about brutality of Islam is what is going on around you today.that has plunged you into such inferiority complex that is eventually making you say things that in total reality has nothing to do with the Religion of Islam.Though if yo use the verb Muslim and try blame them for bad facing Islam in the first place I will agree with you but again do not be baised as good and evil they exist in all sphere and religions as we know it.None of the religion, nowhere in their manifesto tell their follower to kill kill an kill.Yes if you are Muslim or your country is predominantly muslim and by fortune beneath your foot is flowing oceans of Black oil gold, which is the case by large, then you are bad bad bad and your country is definitely worth to be destroyd with all the living beings along there. In that case for other the sacred cow is the OIL not religion and not humans.
Therefore keep your mouth shut if are counted to be as a sensible social being otherwise do not claim that you know too much. This only expose your scattered and empty upper chamber of knowledge that is closest to the reality otherwise.

You also forget to acknowledge that these big ships happen to be surrounded by plenty of smaller frigates/destroyers and submarines all armed with weapons that can combat these high speed boats. Not to mention none of the boats even seems equipped with a torpedo which could sink an Nimitz class vessel... if they did fit them with torpedos you can be they'll be a whole lot slower.

If you have attacked Grenada,Dom.Republic or other Banana state then I can't agrue with you on that.700 000 soldiers died in Iran Iraq war less civilians, you know why,coz the war was fought by to armies facia a facia, mano a mano.
Did you really won wars in Iraq, says WHO??? US destroyed a country, plunged it into a civil war and left it in Shambbles.
and you call it a twice win win.Come on If you are an American you still can be intelligent, though it always is not the case.
US 1 by 1 took the teeth out of Iraq mouth during Iran war, made sure they have no capability left for the near future advnture that was to launched with your Govt blessing by attacking Kuwait, and then simply turned them into villian and yes destroyed them in 48Hours the already destroyed.By the way I think it took you even at that time of preparation for 6 months and was is you alone or there were coalition force along who fought.
The day US counter her match in the battle field,I will then see if you arguments have weight. For now in country that has no fighter jets,no Abraham,no laser guidedes,no satellite facility and is baeting the hell out of your individually fully covered body armered Soldier and giving them nose bleeding on regular basis.and you still believe JACK that you are winning war in Afghanistan.I beleive you are definitely on those opium dose that your CIA has imported only for likes of you from freshly harvested crop, transported via C-17 CIA owned planes.Anyway hallucinating is good a bad idea these times of such economical crisi so keep on Jack, keep on.Americans are only good in beating the unarmed and innocent ones, just remember and realise that whenever you are out of dose influence.

We are speaking of a Nation with a brilliant set of leaders, iran. In the Iran/Iraq war, the Ayatollah Khomeni destroyed his entire airforce Officer AND pilot commands because indeed they had plotted against the Theocracy, trouble is, in his military brilliance, he left Iran with absolutely no air cover or superiority, despite having modern F-14's and a slew of western aircraft, just no one to fly them because they were all executed.

I would assume the new leadership is just as insulated, just as wary and just as vicious to do something just as dumb this time round. War??? Just destroy the Mullahs, the Ayatollah and all their residences and hangers on.. That will give them something to think about...and the populace would probably thank you.

A nuclear Threat from Iran can no longer be prevented since when Iran is not allowing a few sites like Parchin&Fordow etc to be examined by IAEA and moreover they have more than15 nuclear sites some of them deep inside mountains. It is obvious that THEY are cladenstinely developing nuclear bombs which cannot be stopped.Only a nuclear strike in future can be preempted by devising strategies which preempted a Pakistan nuclear strike on India in 1999 during the Kargill conflict between India&Pakistan(This has been corroborated by the definitive hints in NAWAB Sharif's biography-where he quotes then Pakistan Army Chief Musharaff of having plotted to drop the ATOM BOMB over India and Bill Clinton's Biographical books where Clinton says he felt to rush to the continent to prevent an imminent nuclear war)& again in 2001 as well as N Korean one over S Korea in 2010 during the USA-SKorean war exercises. For details please see my Facebook notes etc since these are too lengthy to be described here.
IN THE 1999 ATOM BOMBING PLOT AN INTELLIGENCE MANOEUVRE WAS DONE BY ME BY PROGRAMMING THAT INDIA WILL RETALIATE WITH THE MORE POWERFUL HYDROGEN BOMB DUE TO WHICH REASON THEN PAKISTAN PM NAWAB SHARIF RUSHED TO WASHINGTON TO PLEAD WITH USA PRESIDENT CLINTON TO SOMEHOW STOP THE CONFLICT FROM ESCALATING AND ALL THIS EVEN BEFORE A FULL FLEDGED WAR WAS YET TO START WHICH LEFT NATIONS AND LEADERS WONDERING.
Now If Israel wants to save itself then both Israel and the World including India will have to shed the sheer hypocrisy which is afflicting arrogant world leaders and countries and media alike which is the Root cause of the Nuclear,Cyber&Economic warfare looming large over world.Of course every country has a right to have nuclear weapons just as much as every person has the right to have licensed weapons for his self defence but which in fact will cause only anarchy. The world esp USA stopping the Iranian A-Bomb is only as much credible as was boasted of in preventing the N KOREAN Bomb

America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953, America overthrow Iran's democratic government and installed a brutal dictator Shah of Iran. America helped Shah to established secret police and killed hundreds of thousands of Iranians.
During Iran-Iraq war, America helped Saddam Hussein and killed one million Iranians. America is the only country that shot down Iran's civilian air plain and killed all 290 passengers.
In 2003, America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and displaced 4,000,000+ Iraqi people.
Now, America is a failed country with huge debt. Its debt will be 24 trillion by 2015.
Every other day a city in America is declaring bankruptcy. ha ha ha

To all of you guys that say a mission will destroy a speedboat.
You guys are missing the whole point. It’s not the speed boat, it’s the strategy. You are right; one million dollar smart missile will have no trouble destroying one inexpensive speedboat. How many smart missiles does an F-14 have, or the carrier that it came from? After the F14 or the fleet runs out it has to retreat. Haven’t you heard, its human wave tackles?
But let’s say the fleet can be resupply. How many million dollars missiles can America afford to make?
In one of his tapes, Osama Bin Laden said he didn’t do it. He also said if you come over here, Afghanistan, I will bankrupt you. The U.S. went in with a surplus of money, now the country is about to go bankrupt.

Before some of you out there call him stupid and other words, remember, he was a banker. He had a lot of money, how much do you have? Yeah, I know, his father made the first billions but Osama understood you defeat an invincible army through the wallet.

Why a smart Missile, the 200 round 30 mm drum cannons on the 14's will do the job. Actually a high speed fly-by will disrupt the boat enough, that it will be out of control and capsize. Tonka Toys!

I agree, a drum cannon is powerful, firing an array of rounds per second. Again, the same strategy, the drum cannon will run out of bullets. The drum cannon will have to respond to every speedboat.

If you wanna call people war mongers, at least show a little thought process behind it? F-14s aren't in service anymore, and haven't been for a while. And an aircraft carrier has a nuclear reactor for power... not fuel. It can actually stay at sea indefinitely. And, we don't need million dollar missiles to take down a speedboat because frankly, the speedboat cannot do anything to the carrier unless it is packed with explosives... and even then we have guns onboard that can defeat it.

Um, Mike? You are not quite 100 % correct on the 14's. That was media announcement. World has ears.

There are still 78 flying from US base in Bahrain. They stand down next year.

Besides that, anyone here ever see a Mach I flight at near surface level over water? It leaves a 10 meter crested divot in the water. Now what high speed boat can navigate that with out doing a nose dive.

Mike, you’re right, I’m not a war monger, you are. You, my very intelligent war monger friend, miss the fact that the same concept is still there. Human wave tackles.

My very intelligent war mongering friend, you’re right, with nuclear fuel it can stay out, for 8 years. It does have to come back to port for food and other supplies, like bullets. As for the speed boat, it is going to be arm with one or two missiles, forcing the carrier to fire a drum cannon, until it too runs out of ammo.
Wow, you’re smart. I’m afraid to face you on the battlefield my war mongering friend.

Capt Zeb, every single F-14 in US Navy service, with the exception of a handful saved for musuems and main gate displayes have been shredded at a special facility at Davis Monthan AFB. The last F-14 was retired from the US Navy in 2006. Iran was the one and only foreign customer for the F-14. Iran was supposed to buy 80 but the order was cut short by the revolution and only 44 were delivered before arms shipments to Iran were ended. 12 or 14 of them remain in service today.

The media keeps focusing on attack boats, but they don't focus on are Iran's advanced anti-ship cruise missiles that Iran probably has hundreds of them. They can be launched from back of the mobile launchers from land, so satellites can NOT locate them and as a result, they can NOT be taken out by helicopters or A10s. US Navy vessels are totally sitting ducks for these missiles, and they barely have any defense against them. IRGC destroyed two Israeli Navy corvette class vessels off the coast of Lebanon back in 2006 war.

Helicopters and A-10s can't take out missiles anyways... But the Phalanx gatling gun (usually 4 of them on a carrier) can.

      • rayan

the phalanx pulls at a rate too high its ammunition exhausted very quickly, it is certainly not perfect protection.

Israeli corvette hit by a Hizbullah missile was equipped with the phalanx system, however it was completely useless.

        August 24, 2012 at 11:37 pm |
      • Cheese Wonton

The Israelis didn't have the CIWS lit off. Their intel didn't have the Hezzies equipped with anti-ship missiles so they were not ready to defend against one.

        August 25, 2012 at 2:28 am |
    • Cheese Wonton

The missile threat is over rated. If you study the history of naval warfare in the missile age, most anti-ship missiles launched in anger have been defeated by electronic countermeasures. All of the 40 some anti-ship missiles fired at Israeli naval forces by the Egyptians and Syrians during the 1973 war were seduction jammed and defeated without the Israelis firing a shot (they had no CIWS back then).
During Operation Praying Mantis all of the many Iranian missiles fired at the US Navy were defeated by chaff and electronic countermeasures.
Of the seven Exocet missiles fired at the Royal Navy by Argentine forced during Operation Corporate, five were successfully jammed. One of these subsequently locked on another ship that had no countermeasures, the Atlantic Conveyor, and hit it, setting it on fire. Of the two that were not jammed successfully, one hit the HMS Sheffield (it sank due to lousy damage control, the missile never even exploded) and one hit another destroyer but passed right through her superstructure without exploding.
Libyan anti ship missiles fired at an Italian Island in retaliation for Operation El Dorado Canyon (the Island had a US Coast Guard LORAN station on it, hence the perceived retaliation) missed a stationary island!
Missiles are over rated, and their warheads are not big enough to take out an aircraft carrier. Cause a fire? Yes. Sink it? You would need several dozen, maybe more to seriously threaten to sink it. Iran cannot come close to putting that kind of a stream raid in the air. The US Navy was built to fend off mass missile attacks from the Soviet Navy. Iran is a far less demanding foe.

if I understand your reasoning Whenever an opponent gets a shot it is because you are not ready, without consideration for the opponent in the face?

Hizbullah hit the Israeli corvette, they were not ready it is only their fault.

do you want to Hizbullah to send excuses for not having informed the Israeli navy? do you want Hizbullah to send excuses for not having informed Israeli armored division of the presence of anti tank missile as well?

do your research on the google the sa'ar v possesses well the phalanx system !

U.S. Navy has repeatedly warned of the serious risks of war in the strait of hormuz, when the Iranians sink half of the fifth fleet there will still be idiots like you to say: "we did not know that they had these weapons, and this technique naval guerrilla "

This is not the height of technology. They take an existing speed boat and add weapons: not particularly sophisticated. The problem with this strategy is that they would be sitting ducks for helicoptors or A-10s. They would have no armor to sustain an impact from even the smallest missle, and have no real means of air defense. An A-10 could potentially take out 20 in pretty short order.

I heard on the news that Iranian are copying the most advanced drone that they caught last year. I am wondering how these sanctions don't work! They are really intelligence people.

I read all about that drone. The US is MOSTLY worried about one area where there is concern of whether Iran or other states could reverse-engineer the chemical composition of the drone's radar-deflecting paint or the aircraft's sophisticated optics technology that allows operators to positively identify terror suspects from tens of thousands of feet in the air. Media reports claimed this week that Russia and China have asked Tehran to provide them with information on the drone. Isn't that something?

Hopefully it won't come to WAR..A few of fast boats could possibly get through our defenses, but it would not be easy. The US has multiple land and sea weapons around Iran. They would be getting hit from all sides.

If there is any one out there who thinks a war between Iran and US will be limited to the strait of Hormuz, I'd have an acre
of land on Mars, I'd like to sell him or her.
It's plainly obvious that, If Iran attacks a US warship, US's bombs and cruise missiles will rain on Iran. It's not that the US shouldn't fear Iranian fast boats, it's that Iranians have far more to fear from a global power than the US has from a small country half way around the world, encircled by the most advanced military the world has ever seen.

And Iran has enough firepower to obliterate u.s. bases in its region, where those "cruise" missiles are stationed other than the ships, which also is in Iran's reach. What then? icbm's? That would make a pariah state out of the u.s. and accordingly would be dealt with by the likes of China and Russia, who also have icbm's. Trolls like yourself are self centered and do not realize consequences to stupidity.

A .50 caliber round travels at about 2800 feet per second to a little over 3000 feet per second when shot from a rifle. There have been reports of greater speeds (in the 4000 to 5000 fps range) perhaps with sabot rounds. How fast does that little boat go again?

To get to a carrier you have to get by around a dozen ships not to mention the air patrol overhead. All those ships have weapons. The Ma Duece is still one nasty article. I imagine they have "one or two" on board.

Exactly why this video is hyperbole. Even if they sent 100 of these boats at once a minigun fires 5000 rounds a minute, then there is the .50 cal which could penetrate the engine block with 1 round. For every 1 of these speedboats there are probably 5 different guns that will be pointed at them at s moments notice.

        August 25, 2012 at 5:07 am |
      • trolls abound

off, you're assuming the speedboats are weaponless. They'll be unleashing armada of fire at the enemy. Won't be easy training those guns on the speed boats when you're getting swarmed from multiple directions.

To both George & James & all the people of the world –

I am wonder how these americans can allow their warmonger leadreship to go war one after another around the world without any realistic reason since WW2?? I am also wonder how these americans can make their country such a beautiful country with such limted knowledge as their political leader can easily make them foolish with bogus information? Please stop all drumbit for war. we do not want war anymore. I also request all Americans -please stay away from other country's internal affairs. I believe if you stay in your own territory, the world will become more peaceful on the very next day. we do not need you as world police. Trust me.
US is the most serious threat to the world peace. And please try to expose palestinian problem. please manage a sovereign country in the palestine land. it is very much possible. Can you imagine, how palestinians are living in their own land for more than 60 years?? If this problem can be solved peacfully I believe terrorism will be reduced almost 80%. I guaranteed. We do not want any more war, no more war at all.

It's the amount of boats heading towards a warship what is a concern. I am having difficulty visualizing, how in the dark of a night, on a rough sea, can the U.S. Navy destroy a hundred or two hundred boats beading at 72 knots towards its aircraft carrier from every angle ... by surprise? By surprise here means that they are already arriving. If there are any experts out there, I would like to hear if this can be done. You don't need to say how, for the Iranians are good listeners. Just say, not to worry!

        August 30, 2012 at 4:12 pm |
      • desert voice (troubledgoodangel or Nathanael or Bohdan or Voiceinthedesert)

I remain unconvinced. Is there a way to cordon every warship with a string of floating mines, just in case? I would also deploy high potency lasers, not just bullets.

        August 30, 2012 at 4:29 pm |
  82. Terry

Those boats would be hard to hit from a warship I would guess. The warship would need to decide very quickly to shoot or it would be too late.

Merchant ships would have no effective defense other than retaliation by a civilized country

what is your opinion, not the opinion of the U.S. Navy has warned against a possible disaster, the Strait of hormuz and a narrow corridor.

taken between hundreds or thousands of Iranian fasts boats, the + – 20 Iranians submarines, and thousands of surface-to-sea missils on iranian coast Iran. the fifth fleet runs to disaster.

war is needless, iran is going to have deterrence. anyway.

as admitted by Gen James Mattis the current head of CENTCOM, Gen Cartwright, Adm Fallon etc.......

If the Iranian regime does not want war then it should stop pursuing a nuclear weapons program. There are many nations without a nuclear weapons program that are very prosperous. When you combine this with the hostile rhetoric that comes from Iranian leaders it seems at though they are intent on driving the West to war. There can be peace, but the West will not repeat the mistakes of Neville Chamberlain.

Rayan, "Sunburn", or Raduga 3M80 Moskit, is a very old missile system that is thorougly compromised. It is also a big honking thing with an infrared signature that shows up miles out. It is not the least bit stealthy and it's performance at sea level is nothing close to the figures you see in the enthusiast press.
You might be surprised to know the US Navy bought a bunch of Russian made Kh-31 supersonic cruise missiles to use as targets. Their actual performance never came close to the claims. The US eventually replaced them with a much better target called GQM-163 Coyote.

        August 25, 2012 at 2:33 am |
      • quinterius

Cheese Wonton: Iran has its own cruise missiles. They are not using Russian or Chinese technology. If they can bring down the fancy drone, they should be fairly sophisticated. They know about all the defensive system of the US.

now here it is, be frightened, be very frightened, another third world country has its hands on some weapons to threaten US.

The wierd thing is that a 15 trillion dollar economy, with 700+ military bases around the globe, with 8000 nuclear tipped inter-continental missile, with 12 nuclear submarines perpetually and invisibly travelling around the world, ready to launch nuclear missiles,
this humungous power, is afraid of a tiny country 1/6th its size in area, 1/5th its population, 1/16th its economy, with a peanut size military budget, so afraid, so shivering in its boots,
Oh my god they have fast boats !!!!

The U.S. military as a whole is not "fearful" of Iran and losing a possible conflict, we are respecting their capabilities. We as individuals are ABSOLUTLEY fearful of going into combat and dying. Having fear of the adversary keeps you alive...being arrogant and not respecting their capabilties will get you killed Then again its easy to say you don't understand someone's fear when when you're the one sitting in the comfort of you own home.

      Hey, Darius

If you read (you can do that, yes?) a little history, you will learn that the U.S. is ponderous and slow in terms of diplomatic and military response to third world wannabee "strong men". On the other hand, we don't let those like Saddam threaten our access to purchased oil that we could and perhaps should just TAKE!

We fight in third world nations rather than waiting to fight them here. Conscious, SMART choice. Just keep poking the hornet's nest, fellas. The target practice just makes our military more effective!
