Study: Muslim extremists not looking for world domination

By Adam Levine

Muslim extremists are more concerned with defending against foreign intrusion than foisting Islam on the world, according to a new study of extremist texts. The study suggests that a Western approach of claiming extremists are seeking world domination is misdirected, and instead should seek to counteract claims of victimhood.

"Continued claims to the contrary, by both official and unofficial sources, only play into a 'clash of civilizations' narrative that benefits the extremist cause. These claims also undermine the credibility of Western voices, because the audience knows that extremist arguments are really about victimage and deliverance," write the researchers, Jeffry Halverson, R. Bennett Furlow and Steven Corman.

The analysis by Arizona State University's Center for Strategic Communication looked at how the Quran was used in 2,000 propoganda items from 1998 to 2011, though the majority were from post-2007, that emanated mostly from the Middle East and North Africa. Among the groups analyzed were al Qaeda and al Shabaab, as well as anonymous postings online.

One result that surprised the researchers, the "near absence" of citations from one of the most extreme passages, the "Verse of Swords," that encourages "all-out war against world domination."

"Widely regarded as the most militant or violent passage of the Quran, it is treated as a divine call for offensive warfare on a global scale," the researchers wrote. "It is also regarded as a verse which supersedes over 100 other verses of the Quran that counsel patience, tolerance and forgiveness."

The study concludes that extremists, at least based on how they quote from the Quran, do not reflect "an aggressive offensive foe seeking domination and conquest of unbelievers, as is commonly assumed. Instead they deal with themes of victimization, dishonor and retribution."

"The verses frequently utilized by extremists from this surah address subjects such as enduring hardships and the importance of fighting against the unjust unbelievers who oppress men, women and children," the researchers wrote about the most cited chapter (called a "surah").

The insights led the researchers to suggest alternative approaches to counteracting the extremist messages, rather than focusing on the fear factor. The Arizona group cites a recent effort by the State Department to counteract al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who said in a 2011 video that "there is no hope to remove the corrupt regimes in Muslim countries except by force. And there is no chance to bring change through peaceful action." The State Department Digital Outreach Team posted a video intercutting that video, which included Zawahiri daring someone to find a single example to prove Zawahiri wrong, with video of Arab Spring protesters in Egypt.

Halverson, Bennett and Corman also suggest undermining the "champion" image aspired to by extremists.

Extremists use a "deliverance narrative to position themselves as the champion that can deliver the community from evil," the researchers wrote. "However, as we have argued elsewhere, extremists do little that is champion-like. They have not unseated any apostate rulers, and their victims are overwhelmingly likely to be Muslims."

The study cites data from the West Point Combating Terrorism Center that estimated al Qaeda militants were 38 times more likely to kill a Muslim than a Westerner, based on data from 2006 to 2008.

I simply don't buy the idea that most Muslim extremists don't have an ultimate goal of world conquest. The narrative of oppression and victimization has always been a primary excuse for revolutionaries to take control. Islam is built around the idea of that all must submit to Allah. And there is no tradition of separation of religion and politics in Islam. This is why wherever Muslims become a significant portion of any society they start moving either to impose shariah on all or form separatist regimes. This is not to say that this can't change (as it did with Christianity). But it must change or else we will be in constant state of war with radical Islam.

Huh? Christians clearly seek world domination, and have for centuries.

Americans also misunderstood Communist revolutions in Russia, China, Vietnam, Cuba, etc, being certain that the goal of those revolutions was world domination. In reality, the Russians were concerned most about security for themselves (and who could blame them after losing more lives than any other country during two world wars?) and the Vietnamese sought freedom from colonial domination. Let's not make the same egregious mistakes that we did to prolong the Cold War and get ourselves involved in the internal Vietnamese struggle. Rather than imposing our own view of the world on reality, let's try to understand how the world truly works for once, shall we?

People that seek "word domination" are not Christians...they just "use" the guise to seek their own selfish ends, and are in no way the "Body of Christ" as He asked us to be. True Christians simply believe in that Christ died for their sins and now live through them by example... I suggest sir that before you "look down you nose" on someone else's ideas of "how it is" that you seek to educate yourself on what being a real Christian is all about.

Um... I live in Russia. You've obviously been duped. Russians and Vietnamese are like brothers for their shared Communist ideals and history. I witness that brotherhood. It's a clear partnership. And Communist or not, Russians look for a leader who is capable to rule the world– because that's how nationalistic and egocentric they are. I mean this in a good way. It's too bad our liberal teachers in America taught us to be cowardly and apologizing. I don't know what sources this author is getting for his ideas, but I have plenty more sources to show otherwise. This author has also not traveled much outside of... wherever you are. I have seen Moscow morph over the last 6 years into an Arab region. Islam is the fastest growing religion– not because people are converting, but because they are having babies and immigrating the world over. It's too bad Christians didn't get more organized and do the same. But we have long stopped the practice of beheading those who don't convert... Muslims...?

and Christianity (not to mention the rest of the world especially the islamic world) condems and punishes those who commit atrocities in our current time. those crimes of the past (crusades, inquisition) are beyond the reach of justice. does islam condem atrocities committed by its followers? they in truth can't because then that would be a condemnation of islam and mohamed which we all know is/was infalible. this whole thread is a waste of time as the "believers" think non-believers have no right to critique/critisize islam and its adherents. it is perfect and all other systems are flawed in case you missed it that was sarcasm). in my belief there is no "religion" that has it 100% correct however there are a few that have it completely wrong. interpret that however you want...

Ah! A Muslim! Good. You probably love this article, since it seeks to absolve most Muslims, right? You don't explain how it is that the atrocities of other religions bears on those committed under Islam. I'll grant you that I know of no religion which has NOT committed atrocities and war. Satisfied? So now how do you justify the daily slaughtering going on now, and all of it by Muslims? Smokescreens, invoking guilt, and distractions don't cut the mustard with me. Or the cheese, either, for that matter.

I know what you're trying to do, though. You're trying to make people of non-Islamic faiths feel guilty about the reprehensible things their own religions have done in the past. The goal, of course, is to divert their focus away from the same things going on RIGHT NOW. By Muslims. And they're doing it even more viciously, more often, and are rejoicing in their slaughtering. I'll also remind you that the Crusades were a response to the constant conquests being done by Muslims. The Crusades didn't just happen spontaneously, you know. Even THEN people realized Islam for the deadly threat that it IS. Today we have political correctness instead. You must love that, too. Islam remains the worst threat humanity has ever faced, but through your lies and propaganda – and the oil – we've been indoctrinated to think Islam is benign, peaceful and tolerant, even while they make me ask, every day, when I turn on the news, "I wonder how many people those peaceful Muslims have slaughtered TODAY?" I rarely find nothing.

I can call you out on your lies, old bean. I can use your OWN core texts, Quran and Hadith, in order to do it, too.

So try to convince ME that Islam is about peace and tolerance. I've studied your religion since 1994, and understand it better than many Muslims do. When I began studying Islam, I was looking for reassurance that it really WAS tolerant and peaceful. I did not find any reassurance. What I did find stood my hair on end.

      Some questions for you:

IS the primary goal of Islam, for ALL Muslims, to spend their lives helping the cause of global conquest? Or not?

Is every male Muslim REQUIRED to do violent jihad at least once in his life, or face Allah's wrath on Judgment Day?

We think only "extremists" are doing all that killing these days. Can you truthfully say that the Muslims who are presently quiescent are truly tolerant and peaceful? Or are they maybe just...waiting?

You'll need to cite your holy books. And remember, I know which citations went moot when Muhammad himself violated them, so don't try the stunt of quoting dead text from the Quran. If you do, I'll call you out on it.

Now, with the smokescreens laid to rest, how do you respond to the questions?

So "they" wanted us to get of Saudi Arabia... because that's where the oil is. It's against the Quran for Muslims (or anyone) to profit individually off the oil. Obviously someone allowed us to be in Saudi Arabia. And Saudi Arabia profits nicely as I'm sure America. A nice French guy told me that if the Americans weren't in Saudi Arabia, the Chinese would be in charge there. While I personally have nothing against the Chinese, I believe we'd be narrow-minded to believe "Muslims wanting USA off of their land" means "we don't want to hurt you and the world will be a better place if you just go home". No, for some reason I get the sense that "off their land" means "totally gone from the earth". Name only Muslims may not be this way, so if one is a name-only Muslim, I'd consider this. Your religious books do call Muslims to world governance and to spread the profits from the oil (what makes fire) to all Muslims as in a socialized system. It is a discriminatory system based on your profession of faith. If that's not what you want to believe about Islam, maybe you aren't really Muslim. Just like some people profess to be Christians and don't really live up to one iota of the Bible. Well, good luck finding your path in all these smokescreens!

To all non-Muslims: Taqiyya is a means to save lives by lying if need be – only on seldom life and death situations...thats idiots took that as Muslims can lie and ran with it faster than you can run with a football...Also let me reveal a sacred saying of the Holy Prophet Muhammad sallalahu alaihi is narrated on authentic hadith sources that he said something to the effect of when asked can a Mulsim be a liar (one who consistently lies) the beloved of Allah and the Muslims replied "No" – this happened 3 does that answer your question....listen I am a Muslim and no lying is not permissible unless it is to save a probably believe this too is a lie so saying anything to you is pointless.

Clark. I am glad you mentioned Taquiyya. Have you ever noticed how SENSITIVE Islam is to any type of criticism over ANY Islamic issue or doctrine or word. The sense of persecution is considered more important thatn slaughter, and Taquiyya is use by you and other Muslims on this board to protect the "lives" of Muslims setting about to slaughter Americans and other Westerners because of THEIR religion or lack of it. Check out Yoel Natan's Moon-O-Theism for the real Islam, and while you are at it, check out his Jewish Trinity which absolutely defends the Christian concept of trinitarianism even found in the Old Testament with so many references that it overwhelmed the unitarianism of the Jews later on to subvert the Masseretic Texts of the Old Testament. One can even determine which person of the Trinity was talking to which early prophet in the Torah, and many would be surprised that the pre-incarnate Jesus or the Son was that presence (face) of Jehovah leading the Israelites into the land and while in the land. It would be moot with my concept of not all Catholics being Christian in a Biblical sense, because they choose to have other than scripture to develope their doctrines and practices, and your inability to defend that you have sects in your Islam that does not consider the other true Islam, because you also depend on other than Qur'an to develope your doctrines, to deal with atrocities that so-called Christians were supposed to have committed. I for one am glad that they drove Islam back from Europe and made Islam the back alley pitiful excuse of a civilization that it is now. But, of course, Islam is not the ONLY nemesis to righteousness in this world, for there are other un-godly systems tearing at the true of Biblical Christianity according to the Jehovah being the one name of Gods (a plurality which will be difficult to translate into any type of language. Simply put when the Bible tells us that Jehovah (singular) our Gods (Elohim is plural and not the magestic plural of lying polimicists) is one Jehovah means that there is NO OTHER GODS, whether Pseudo Trinities or polytheists outside of that plurality known as Jehovah. You think YOUR Allah is inscrutable? Think about the ELOHIM that WE have which IS greater than any other lying spirit attempts to gain earthly godhood. Simply put, poor ol' Muhammad was too simple to try to defend a multiple concept of JEHOVAH, thinking his experience with his old gods more, well...logical to simple mortal minds, and I am sorry that this poor man was so abused by Satan or his angel that tried to mash him, and the so called Christians Muhammed consulted to reassure him that he was not indeed being possessed by a demonic spirit...which he was, since Gabrial NEVER abused any that he appeard to. This is tough love to speak to you so straight, but consider that Christian agape love which is an unconditional love can only be applied to those when we are not having to duck...from the bullets or the head cutting blow of Islam, when we try to preach to and have God convert such to himself out of Islam and from other godless peoples of this world. By the way, my type of Christianity had to duck when the Catholics ruled things...only in America do we have the best kind of Catholics...ones even true to our Republic. Which means that even once persecuting worldviews can be do we go about giving YOU folk some peace...since your radicals tend to kill more muslims than westerners anyway? When you are not trying to kill us, you tend to grow on us and we would like to feel safe in your company...but we cannot, now, and this is a new experience for me, especially when I have family that I love that is Muslim.

taqiyya is technically a shi'a doctrine. A majority of sunni scholars reject taqiyya, they even use the term in a derogatory fashion against shi'a much like anit muslim loons use it against everyday muslims. They look to the example of the torture of Bilal(ra) and the torture and murder of Sumayyah bint Khayyat(ra) to back their claims that thought it is allowed it is not encouraged.

Your right. Only liberals and the Obama Administration believe you. For you Americans out there that want to defend your freedom. Below is the definition of Taqyia. Its used to safeguard and proselytize ISLAM, to spread it and defend it.

The word "Taqiyya" literally means: "Concealing, precaution, guarding.” It is employed in disguising one's beliefs, intentions, convictions, ideas, feelings, opinions or strategies. In practical terms it is manifested as dissimulation, lying, deceiving, vexing and confounding with the intention of deflecting attention, foiling or pre-emptive blocking. It is currently employed in fending off and neutralising any criticism of Islam or Muslims.

One cannot look at 2,000 postings and draw a conclusion about a religion's sentiments.
The scientific method's weakness is that it tries to look at a limited data set and make conclusions
Inductive reasoning never results in truth.

It doesn't matter what this study says. It is not truth.
Someone looked at limited data and drew a conclusion.

If I watch 2,000 white geese fly over head can I conclude that all geese are white?
That is bascially what science tries to do and people are drinking the koolade.

The truth is historically there have always been Muslims who have used violence
to push their religion and its founder, Mohammed, used violence. Those are facts.
Recently, we have seen numerous examples of Muslims who commit horrific
acts of violence in the name of their religion. These are facts.
It is also a fact that there are many more Muslims clerics speaking about killing
in the name of Islam than there are clerics standing up to denounce violence.

Only apologists for Islam will defend it.

Islam is a delusion founded by a delusional man.

We have to find the bad people in religion, we should not consider any religion as bad. Because the people who are entering in any religion figure some thing good in it.

Do you think we are under the curse of Ishmael, and can not think or reason? It is not those who believe in the books that came before who are ordered not to think and reason, but only those forced into 'islam' that are so ordered by the vile , evil stupidity of muahmmads quran. "Amnesty International has concluded that there is strong evidence that members of India’s Provincial Armed Constabulary were responsible for the Muslim massacre (hundreds of thousands) and the deliberate killing of unarmed civilians during the riots and following days."
The report added that witnesses had charged PAC officers (all Brahmins and High caste Hindus) of herding Muslims into trucks and later shooting them dead (raping the Muslim ladies, in most cases). Their bodies were then tossed into canals and rivers.

A recent report by United Press trust of India (UPI) stated that during the past three years more than 2,500 young boys and girls were sacrificed to goddess Kali in India. Another of AFP's recent reports say: hundreds of young boys and virgin girls are sacrificed every month for the deity Kali. In one case Rama Sewak hacked his eight year old son to death in broad daylight in Delhi because goddess Kali had told him he would come back to life and bring him good fortune. Bloodthirsty Kali is worshipped openly the length and breadth of India. Kali's statue stands naked astride the inanimate body of the Hindu deity Shiva, tongue stuck out with blood dripping from fang-like teeth. She holds a noose, a skull-topped staff, a blood-encrusted sword and a severed head. She is also known as Durga, Devi, Shaktima, Uma and Parvathi in other manifestations. The priest of Delhi, Kali Bari, says that a child sacrificed to Kali ensures a man the birth of a son. Human sacrifices are also made to these gods or goddesses, either to appease them or to ask favours of them.

They are not looking for world domination. You are. You went to their region first and stirred things up, what they did was a response to your involvement. You did things, they punished you. You ignored the initial part, acted like the victim who was attacked for no reason, and went there in higher numbers to punish them for punishing you. Everybody needs to get real. If Americans didn't unconditionally support the violent Israelis in the middle east despite all their unjustifiable actions which the entire world condemns, they wouldn't have gained any enemies and they would be living in peace away from it all. Stop the collective mental illness as if you are right and they are wrong, put yourselves in their position for once, you would have done the same or more, you always do. Stop playing the victims because you are far from being innocent. Granted you are brainwashed and fed lies and propaganda in an ongoing basis, you don't know better, but enough is enough.

The western world kills far more innocent people than the middle eastern crowd, yet acts like it is better. Since the media is controlled by the west, they place this game in which they are always the good side and the winners. The reality is a whole different story.

And, it's all Arabs, no other Muslim nation is part of the terrorism. Other Muslim countries do not produce more terrorists than Christian countries. There are 300 million Arabs in the world, and 1.5 billion Muslims. No reason to extend the umbrella to all. The sick game is a result of US alliance with Saudi Arabia.

Karin- You think that Al Qaeda's motivation for 9/11 was because of our support for Israel? FAIL. Do yourself a favor and do some actual research on the "motivation" Al Qaeda against the U.S.... I've sat through atleast a half dozen briefs on this topic, and though you don't have access to classified information that I've seen, open sources can give you atleast get you "in the ballbark" on an accurate assessment. 15 years active duty Major USAF sitting in the CAOC in Qatar 3 into a 6 month deployment. If you don't "believe" me, I won't lose an ounce of sleep over what you "think" is the truth from what you read from open sources...

Why would anyone believe you? You said yourself that you are part of the problem, it's only natural that your "closed-sources" have been feeding you the information you need, you are brainwashed and you fall for it all. Just like these very reliable sources were 100% sure that there were WMDs in Iraq. We saw the truth. Don't exaggerate yourself or the organizations you belong to.

        July 11, 2012 at 6:00 am |
      • Trevor

Karin- First off, I never asked if ANYONE "believed" me...people already have their biased opinions of the U.S. military, and it wouldn't matter if they knew I was God himself, they wouldn't change their mind on what they "think" is the truth. Second, your "opinion" that the U.S. military is "part of the problem"...for every country in this world that says that I can point to country that would beg to differ with your assessment...especially in the Middle East. To "back up" this FACT, here's a list of the countries in the world that train/cooperate with the U.S. military on a regular basis and this is just in the MIddle East: Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, Israel, Yemen and Pakistan. Did leave anyone out? Iraq (they've got problems), Lebanon? (not able to "cooperate" militarily), Syria and Iran (self-explanatory). Third, these briefs I was from a professor from Pakistan, one from Kuwait and one from George Washington University in D.C.... Nice ASSumption that you think that all "classified" information comes from only military sources. "Exaggerate my position or the organization I belong to"...what does that mean? Didn't "exaggerate" where I am, what I do, or what information I know, I just stated a fact... Finally, why would anyone believe you anymore than me?

As a youth of the southern U.S. it's even apparent Pakistans ISI is connected to the Terrorist networks of their Northern region, most likely established in response to Indian military action (not placing blame or initial aggression- never was anywhere in any comment listed below given explaination). So as a youth not of the southern U.S. but planet Earth, the Taliban is a threat for harboring global terrorist (like Ireland,Iran, and so many others) that blow up international citezens. Furthermore the ridiculously large and ineffective Indian army needs to be dismantled and put to use in assisting the poverty stricken masses and not sitting in trenches hiding from Talibans.

Really they just now figured this out? I thought that was coommon knowledge buut guess not. As for the passage in the Quran, about seeking war, that is intended to mean violence should be used if the principles of tolerance and foregiveness are not accepted by the other party. One of the main reasons these extremist groups feel victimized is that the western governments support Isreal. A country that has proven to be an aggresor in numerous conflicts and was founded by use of terror. If a neighboring Arab nation state attempted anything even close to what isreal does they would recieve strict sactions and probably military reaction from the U.S. Example: Iran threatens to block an oil shipping route, naval flotila moved into Persain gulf with additional aircraft carrier the very symbol of American military might. Isreal blockades a nation causing the starvation of thousands, raids peaceful ships attempting to bring medical supplies and food to the innocent and in the process kill a couple of civilians. The west does nothing. Iraq attacks rebels and seperatists who aided Iran during the Iran-Iraq war. U.S. establishes a no fly zone. Isreal launches multiple airstrikes into heavily populated areas of neighboring sovergin nations. U.S. supplies the bombs and planes.

Sam, are you referring to the ship that the Israelis boarded only to be attacked by peace activists? I'm guessing you also simply forgot to mention that Israel's neighbors declared aggressive war against Israel after the UN's mandate created the state. Probably don't read the news much either, since you didn't mention the thousands of rockets that have poured into Israel from Gaza, or the kidnapping of Israeli military and civilian persons??? I don't want to cut you down, but to place blame on one people in a complex conflict is silly. By the way, the Straight of Hormuz is an internationally recognized sea straight, just like the Suez Canal and the Panama Canal. No one country is allowed to dominate or regulate sea passage. The US, among other nations, enforce the admiralty laws that protect these waterways. Might want to double check the Quran again regarding war...Quran (2:191-193) doesn't talk about tolerance or forgiveness. It is pretty brutal as it Quran (5:33). Christianity has a new testament of peace and forgiveness, where is yours?

The Aghori or Aghouri is a Hindu cult that is considered to have split off from the Kapalika order in the fourteenth century AD. They have cannibalistic rituals. The streets of northern Indian cities are littered with followers of this cult carrying a kapala, which is a cup made from a skull! These bizarre people will eat anything from rotten food to animal faeces. In order to achieve the highest citadel of enlightenment, the Aghori will perform horrendously crude rituals. The finality of their rituals is attained from eating the decaying flesh of a human.

Here is another falacy in concept: "MUSLIM HATE US BECAUSE THEY HATE OUR WAY OF LIFE AND FREEDOM" – Reality check...Muslims are all about freedom but within the constraints of Islamic law...look at the Free syrian Army fighting the dictator of syria, or toppling of the american backed shah of Iran or Hosni, or the removing of the communists from the afghan lands...MUSLIMS could care less about American way of life...just dont need to oppose every thing which has to do with Islam in Muslim countries and fight against it...Do you think Afghans are thrilled to have Americans in their land? Even if I did not like Republicans (which I do not) I would not want Canada to rule over my country...same way in Afghanistan...just because people there do not like Taliban they do not necessarily want US culture and ideolgy and physically to have marines there.

But you must confess that if the centralized goverment of nation (like those in Afghanistan,Pakistan) cant control fantatical rebels in their country (or attept diplomatic discussion if peace is reasonably expected) than because I and my family fly commercial, that centralized goverment must give full co-op. as an ally (unlike Pakistan's ISI and terrorist at war with India) or declare their nation at war as a whole. If deception or dishonesty if suspected or felt, isnt that when the U.N. and Nato forces engage in action ( justifiably as the International community agreed a certain threat level)?

NATO's job is to protect member nations form outside aggression such as from Russia or China (by extension of SEATO treaties) not to act as an international police force. Rather that money should be spent on subsides and reduced taxes to businesses in order to bring jobs back to the U.S. as well as research into alternate energy such as SBSP, EBSP, of wind as well as the technology to have effective military vehicles that can run on these new energy soucres to break the need for foregin oil

The truth is, it is us and in particular, our christian extremists, who desire world domination, but in true Freudian fashion, we have projected our unconscious needs onto others rather than acknowledge our own demons.

Mac: Hogwash. Nikita Kruschev proudly proclaimed to Secretary of Agriculture Benson "Your grandchlidren will live under Communism." The idea that many prominent Communists wanted Communism to take over the world was not so far-fetched. The fact that today some Americans misunderstand the goals of the radical Muslims doesn't have anything to do with Freudian projection. Sometimes misunderstandings are no more than misunderstandings.

Dosent anyone beleive that eventually (like bad policy republicans) these old Islamic terrorist and masterminds will die off, and without rational, semi- educated (compared to my home's standards- the Southern U.S.) a new generation will replace their there positions? Mayby stop giving so much in Foreign aid for national security!- Our Army is our national security! utilize that more than Pakistan's ISI and Syrian Rebels or lets talk this thing out. I thought the spread of radica Islam in Africa and Asia was simply the old rebels from the 1980's and chaos of the end of the Soveit arms flood?

The author of this study is incredibly naive. As someone who has spent extensive time in the Middle East, I can tell you this author's conclusion is dead wrong. The author fails to learn the lesson that should've been learned from the apathy of Europeans and others during the Holocaust, which I will illustrate with a well known passage:

"First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the communists and I did not speak out – because I was not a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out – because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak out for me." -Pastor Niemoeler

So why didn`t the muslims stick to the one land where they came from? Instead they have been attacking everyone else for 1400 years. And it still continues. Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Mali. If you would all go back to Saudi Arabia, and stay there, we wouldn`t have a problem. But the only way to stop the try for world conquest is to actually put a stop to it.

Wishing to establish the Caliphate is a way to the world domination. It is a nostalgia of the time when Muslim Caliphs were a great power and ruled a part of Europe. Muslims never forgot that time. But, in the last few centuries when the west made tremendous progress in science and became world power, and also made some Muslim countries their colonies. Muslims awakened to realize that they could do it again what hey had done in the past. But they lack the ability to organize and the knowledge of science. That frustration made them very and made them extremists. I have lived with Muslims for 60 years. I know. Sorry to say that the study that has been done in the USA is erroneous.

The article makes sense. Nothing like an external perceived enemy to bring a country together. Once the US is gone they will go back to looking for internal enemies. Unlike before, the problem for the Taliban is that these new internal enemies will now have many guns and the training to use them.

"This article is accurate...I think most extremists never cared to "Rule the world." Rather they wanted to live in a Muslim Utopia with no Western cultural influence." The only Utopia is for the religious leaders. The extremists use their followers use as pawns and the women are not even second class citizens. What kind of leader would send someone else for a suicide bombing. If they were true leaders they would do it themselves instead of using their poor followers. I don't think they want to rule the world but those in power are afraid to lose what they have and are striking out. The extremists want their followers to be uneducated and not have a mind of their own. Religion is a great tool because it uses unquestioned faith. Like the crusades it is about power and religion is being hijacked and twisted to do the dirty work.

"""Have you ever sat down and read the Christian Bible? Ever hear of the Crusades or the Spanish Inquisition?"""

Not a valid comparison. At least Christianity has been through a reformation. Islam remains true to its primitive core.

Also, if you study the Crusades you will learn that they basically resulted from Muslim aggression against Christian pilgrims that remained unchecked for centuries before the Christians retaliated with force. It's more complex than I can cover here. Read up on it. The Muslims were not simply innocent bystanders.

If the Hindu man's wife dies, he is free to go and find another beautiful woman when he wants. But if the Hindu woman's husband dies, not only is she prohibited to remarry but she should be cremated along with her dead husband ("Sati"). According to the Haria, the woman who follows her husband in death purifies three families – her father's, her mother's and her husband's. These Brahmin theologians propagate the theory based in the Vedas that a woman who did not burn herself would never become free of being born as a woman again.

@Aaron Muslims protesting in European countries that those countries should follow Sharia law. That prisoners are being converted to Islam at an increasing rate. The practical elimination of Christianity from the Middle East and the continued attempt to eliminate Judaism from the region. Countries such as Saudi Arabia for sponsoring terrorists along with Iran, Syria, Turkey, Yemen, and Iraq. Qatar controls Al-Jazeera, who frequently broadcasts Islamic scholars calling for the destruction of the west.

North Africa is becoming increasingly Muslim and not in a peaceful way either. Look at Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Uganda as examples and it's no surprise this violence is cased by Muslims. Also look at Chechnya in Russia, the Philippines, even parts of China.

The basic tenets of Islam say that followers of Muhammad are the true followers of Allah (god) and that although other groups (Christians and Jews specifically) have followed Allah before, they are wayward and inferior to Islam.

Tragically, in India people are dying of hunger. Why are low caste poor Hindus prohibited from eating beef? People stop their cars, and sit for hours waiting for a cow to clear the roadway, thinking it to be sacred. In India cow meat is cheaper than other available meats. Instead of these Brahmins taking care of the low caste peoples of India, they are doing their best to save their "holy" cows instead. This is evil. According to Valmith's Ramayana, God Rama "ATE" meat. So then "why" have these Brahmins given up beef-eating? It's hypocrisy within their own religion.

Your point is valid but the real reason why Hindu's consider Cow as sacred is different.
In India Cow's milk is one of the main sources of proteins. You can milk the cow and make cheese or yogurt or butteroil which can be consumed for a longer duration. If you start eating beef then you will lose the source of protein. I am a hindu who eats beef. And I can tell you that there is no religous book that prohibits eating beef by hindus.
It is equivalent to eating the chicken that lays a couple of eggs everyday.

Also in general Indian's don't eat much meat because being a tropical country there are lots of fruits and vegetables to choose from.

But as far as million being hungry is concerned, I do agree that India has a long way to go. But that is a complicated problem which involves issues such as population, education and corruption to name a few.

This study was important because one needs to know their enemy. George Bush and his fellow conservatives, who wanted their war in Iraq, put out the continual message that the terrorists wanted to "take away our freedom" because they were afraid that if we knew the truth, we might have insisted that our government just remove our troops from Saudi Arabia and stop our bind support for Israel. If we had done those things, we would not have been a target. The terrorists never targeted the Canadians, the Aussies or the Brits to take away THEIR freedom. Why not? Because those countries had no troops in Saudi Arabia.

I would like our government to stop treating us like children and wrapping us in the flag and patriotism whenever they feel the need to justify a foreign policy. Just tell the truth and let the policy's merits speak for itself.

The Brits flew recce missions, regularly participated in strikes on Iraq's IADS when their AAA took pot shots at our planes... Oh and BTW, you're saying the UK hasn't had an attack on its soil post 9/11? Really?

        July 10, 2012 at 2:43 pm |
  61. Mike South

I've been watching these messages for years and the one thing the terrorists say more than anything else is that they are motivated by islam.

In this case, they believe that sunni islamic law allows muslims to let the holy warriors fight an offensive war on their behalf, but it requires all able muslims to participate in a defensive war, therefore the terrorists frame the conflict as defensive as a means of recruitment. The study would have picked up that detail had they not put their political blinders on before commencing to 'study'.

Studies and articles like these will get never near the truth as long as they refuse to truly listen to the terrorists who want us to know in no uncertain terms that they are motivated by islam.

He would have been all over the news. like I said on my post (if you read) I said if there is one out there, he/she probably leads a congregation of 10. I swear some people are just dumb.

Jesus isn't a "motive" to kill anyone, ever. He wouldn't even allow Peter to defend him when he was taken prisoner by the Romans(in fact, he HEALED the only guard that was wounded). FAIL.

Christianity is based on FORGIVENESS and SERVITUDE (think Jesus washing the feet of the disciples). No where would it be acceptable to kill someone because of their lack of faith- it would condemn them to hell.

Al Qaeda's primary motivation has always been to get foreign non-muslim troops out of Saudia Arabia. They have stated that. Saudia Arabia is the most sacred of lands to Islam and Al Qaeda believes non-muslims should not be there. So yes, it is a religious motivation. Every terrorist group is motivated by something.

Al Qaeda? We have been at war for more than 10 years! last time I checked Al Qaeda have no more than 200-300 active members three years ago! Most people do not even know where the term, "Qaeda" comes from, it means "base" which is the base where these guys use to get their training against the Russians. The mujahedeen received training at the base. So we have to think, does it take 10 years for the strongest military on the planet to fight these Al Qaeda forces, who at best have rudimentary training?

While I believe that using only fear and violence against such groups will not get the job done, I do not think that ideology is always the primary motive. In many cases, though the United States does have a history of getting involved when it should not, I think it is naive to believe that merely disengaging from these countries or giving in to what extremists want will stop them from gaining followers. I really do not believe leaders like bin Laden, or al-Zarqawi (who cut off heads in Iraq) were primary driven by their beliefs. I do not think they really even cared about their religion. They manipulated and used religion in order to gain power. The power was/is their primary motivator, much like other tyrants in the world. Religion and deep seated beliefs in that religion, including disenfranchised youth in Arab and Asian countries, is how they are able to manipulate youth. As for the likes of al-Zaqawi: he was a sociopath who liked to kill people. What their own governments do or how they treat their people will ultimately decide if they will continue to exist. For instance, Saudi Arabia created many of these problems by blindly paying off mullahs to gain support. Those Mullahs then took the money and started extremist schools all over the Sunni world, particularly in Pakistan. Pakistan ignored the problem, as well, and added to it by supporting the Taliban as a counter to growing Indian regional power. What does this have to do with U.S. foreign involvement? Much less then it has to do with poor governments in other nations. That is the source of the problem.

Yeah, all they want is to be just left alone. When they move from the middle east and populate parts of Asia, we should just leave them alone. When they move from the middle east and start populating Europe, all we have to do is leave them alone. When they move from the middle east and start forming their own neighborhoods here in America, like in Patterson, NJ, we should just leave them alone. Wait a minute, they just gained world domination because they said they just want to be left alone and we believed them!!!

Reading comprehension much? The article is about what you find if you do a mass-analysis of thousands and thousands of online posts to determine what people are thinking. It's the results of a study, and if it's true, anyone can verify it.

Instead of whining claims about an agenda that you can't back up, why not check into the mechanics of how the study was done; see if they did a random sampling, understand the methods used, try to determine whether it's true or not? Anybody can point at one or two beheading videos and bleat about boogymen and how we must all continue to take our shoes off in airports and spread our legs and teach our children to do the same, but it takes an actual shred of intelligence to understand what the study was about and look into whether there might be something there or not.

I've never thought otherwise. However, they can't keep everything from coming into their country unless they put up a wall and not let anyone out or in, and they need people to leave the country and come back–for politics, for assistance in a myriad (cue Heathers) of ways...which exposes them to ideas and situations that work against their religious views. So what they really want is isolation and intolerance and when they can't realistically have it, they start blaming everyone not like them and that's where people like myself start to think they are extreme.

Hey Surakij, put all that crap aside for a sec and address the main point of the study: Do the islamic extremist propoganda postings of the past several years mostly go on about wanting to take over the world or do they mostly go on about wanting to kick the west out their land and culture?

Right, they're only defending themselves like the 9/11 hijackers were only defending themselves.
CNN and Adam Levine are doing now what the Left has always done.
They sell Americans out when we are under attack.
The did it during the Vietnam and Cold War so selling out comes naturally and easily for them.
They don't feel right if they aren't selling out.
Mr. Levine's intended message is "poor misunderstood jihadis."

It's merely an excuse to justify their pursuit of power and take control over the faithful in order to complete their own agendas. I wouldn't call it "selling Americans out". This isn't a political's just an OpEd.

It appears to me that Muslims are the fastest growing segment of world society today. As others are withering away the Muslims seem to be rising again with their contributions as was the case historically when they ruled India and Europe and left behind a legacy of science, art, architecture, culinary et al. One only needs to go to Spain and India to witness this. What really pleasantly surprised me was what I witnessed in the Middle East. A tolerant society that has come so far in a few years. Most importantly providing job and economic opportunities to all, Hindus/Indians, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Europeans, Americans, Africans, South Americans, Chinese, and Russians etc. Never have I witnessed such openness and equal opportunities unless you go back to the times of Muslim rule in India and Spain. My conclusion is that the Muslims get it. They are striving to once again take their leadership role in the world order and take this civilization to its next level of excellence. The climb to success and progress is not a linear curve but a stochastic one. Let us join in wishing our Muslim brethren well and much success in their endeavors. If we can't help them let's not pull the rug from under them.

Actually, they are right about the whole science, art, et al bit. The problem here is that extremists have taken over. People who want nothing more than to oppress people into a dark age. At one point in history, the middle east was the most advanced area in the world. It wasn't until after the Crusades that it was destroyed. Heck, Bagdhad is still recovering from when they were sacked by Atilla the Hun.

Unfortunately, as with all religions, the most vocal groups are the center of attention. These are extremists. It would be like labeling all Christians based on the actions of Fred Phelps and his clan of idiots. Unfortunately, the only ones you see are the ones who put themselves in the lime light.

In many cases, the Muslims who aren't extremists, are usually bulldozed by the fire brands and either just nod their heads and go along with it, or just do everything they can not to draw attention to themselves.

The exact same thing happens with Christians in this country. Someone blows up an abortion clinic and you definitely don't have moderate Christians standing up and condeming the action or speaking out against their extremist brothers in Christ. They may express their distaste for the actions, but certainly not on a scale that would bring attention to themselves.

I note that you never mentioned which country you visited in the Middle East. Every day I read about murders of Christians, firebombings of churches, murders of women for the slighhtest provocation, not to mention that most Middle East countries today have thrown out their Jewish populations who have been there for thousands of years. If you really want to know anout the Middle East, speak to the Christians who had to leave Lebanon, Algeria, Morrocco, fleeing for their lives. A reality check might be in order.

It appears to me that muslims are not one to sit back and take it on the chin. They will fight back to protect their interests when they feel they have been wronged. Nor will they hide behind the veil of CNN.

I agree with your observations. As an American expat, I have worked in many middle eastern countries and found the conditions there to be better than even in the United States in many ways. Very progressive people, the muslims that I came across. thank you for your hospitality and giving me a job when i needed it the most.

      How's this in contrast:::

New, More Dangerous Hindu Extremist Groups Emerge in India

Christians concerned as rightwing factions splinter to form militant outfits.
PUNE, India, October 29 (CDN) — After more than a decade of severe persecution, India’s Christian minority is growing increasingly concerned over the mushrooming of newer and deadlier Hindu extremist groups.

Gone are the days when Christians had to watch out only for the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council) and its youth wing, Bajrang Dal, which are closely linked with the most influential Hindu extremist umbrella organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). With voter support faltering for the RSS’s political wing, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), moderate and extremist sections within the Hindu nationalist movement are blaming each other, and militant splinter groups have emerged.

Claiming to be breakaway factions of the RSS, new groups with even more extreme ideology are surfacing. The Abhinav Bharat (Pride of India), the Rashtriya Jagran Manch (National Revival Forum), the Sri Ram Sene (Army of god Rama), the Hindu Dharam Sena (Army for Hindu Religion) and the Sanatan Sanstha (Eternal Organization) have launched numerous violent attacks on Christian and Muslim minorities.

"Millions have been massacred in Palestine"?

Where do you get those numbers?

I believe the true figures are that the total loss of life is in the thousands, and a large percentage of those have been combatants of one form or another. As for millions, that is what the Palestinian population has grown by in the last 40 years.

Ridiculous, transparent hyperbole like the statement above is a constant staple with pro-P partisans, and why I can never take them seriously.

        July 10, 2012 at 11:54 am |

Get your facts straight-millions of Palestinians have NOT been slaughtered. Those who have died have mostly died at their own hands building defective bombs, as a result of terrorist acts, and by their own people. Try doing some real research into this instead of parroting other people's views.

What a bunch of hog wash.

This “analysis” only proves that Arizona State University Center for Strategic Communication is filled with fools and PC wonks.

Anyone with the time to read a large enough base of Islamic theological texts will find that Islam as a whole preaches world domination.

It may not fit the PC world view, but: Islam is a violent ideological totalitarian system, shrouded in a thin veneer of religious legitimacy. The stated goal of Islam is simply – world domination. And Islamic texts state – “war is deceit”. The ASU Center for Strategic Communications has been deceived.

Like all revolutionaries, the islamists are fighting the wars that are currently in front of them to reach their desired goal: the supremacy of islamic law in the regions under contention. However, their guiding books and ideology make it clear that islamic law is the ONLY legitimate law on the planet and that every expression of man made law or instance of power in the hands of non-muslim over muslim is illegitimate and an abomination. World domination may not be on the menu today, but it will be tomorrow, at least once anything resembling the caliphate is resurrected.

NEW YORK: Renowned Indian activist and novelist Arundhati Roy has decried the silence of the international community over the continued “brutal Indian occupation of Kashmir” and said Kashmiris should be given the right to self-determination.
“Kashmir is one of the most protracted and bloody occupations in the world — and one of the most ignored,” she told a large audience at the Asia Society during a discussion on “Kashmir — a case for freedom”.
Under the Indian military rule in Kashmir, Ms Roy said, freedom of speech was non-existent and human rights abuses were routine. Elections were rigged and the press controlled.
She said the lives of Kashmiris were made miserable by gun-totting security personnel who harassed and terrorised people with impunity, adding that disappearances were almost a daily occurrence as also kidnapping, arrests, fake encounters and torture. Mass graves have been discovered and the conscience of the world remains unstirred……
The apathy towards Kashmir, especially in the western world, Ms Roy said, was because of their pursuit of commercial interests in India where they were more eager to “sell their goods than human rights”……..

Perhaps, having met but a few I can't be sure, but rest assured the Christian ones certainly are.

Cults MUST recruit, so the people at the core don't actually have to produce anything other than nonsense.

They must program children early, so as to assure themselves positions of authority and dominance.

You see, Religion is the ORIGINAL Ponzi scheme, and it is still victimizing billions.

It needs to be crushed before our societies can mature.

There are so many "definitions" of religion...people of faith don't have a lock on "a set of beliefs that a group of people hold to be true" (one of MANY definitions). We ALL believe in something whether seen or unseen, ALL seek to influence others into they believe is true...this goes for ALL people from the devout Christian to the stauch Atheist...and its clear my friend that you're NO different...claiming the victimization of billions yet calling to "crush" what you "believe" is not "in line" with you views...hypocrisy at its finest.

Further, true Christians follow Christ and Christ include the ones that are out there "leading". True Christianity has nothing to do with "power and authority". You say that you've met only a "few and can't be sure"? Thats EXACTLY right you can't be sure, so how can you sit there and make a definitive statements about a group of folks you obviously have had minimal interaction with?

There are two forms of lying to non-believers that are permitted under certain cirkumstances in islam, taqiyya and kitman. These cirkumstances are typically those that advance the cause Islam – in some cases by gaining the trust of non-believers in order to draw out their vulnerability and defeat them.

Taqiyya – Saying something that isn't true.

Kitman – Lying by omission. An example would be when Muslim apologists quote only a fragment of verse 5:32 (that if anyone kills "it shall be as if he had killed all mankind") while neglecting to mention that the rest of the verse (and the next) mandate murder in undefined cases of "corruption" and "mischief."

Though not called Taqiyya by name, Muhammad clearly used deception when he signed a 10-year treaty with the Meccans that allowed him access to their city while he secretly prepared his own forces for a takeover. The unsuspecting residents were conquered in easy fashion after he broke the treaty two years later, and some of the people in the city who had trusted him at his word were executed.
    – Ibn Ishaq 834 & 837).

Such was the reputation of Muslims for lying and then killing that even those who "accepted Islam" did not feel entirely safe. The fate of the Jadhima is tragic evidence for this. When Muslim "missionaries" approached their tribe one of the members insisted that they would be slaughtered even though they had already "converted" to Islam to avoid just such a demise. However, the others were convinced that they could trust the Muslim leader's promise that they would not be harmed if they simply offered no resistance. (After convincing the skeptic to lay down his arms, the unarmed men of the tribe were quickly tied up and beheaded
    – Ibn Ishaq 834 & 837).
