Afghan insurgents strike U.S. outpost

A band of Afghan insurgents breached a small U.S. outpost in southern Afghanistan early Tuesday, wounding nine coalition troops before all but one of the attackers were killed, two U.S. officials said.
The U.S. officials said at least eight insurgents somehow made their way into the security perimeter at Forward Operating Base Frontenac, in the Arghandab River valley. The area has been the scene of extensive insurgent activity in recent years.
Seven of the attackers were killed and the lone survivor was wounded, the officials said. Neither official could explain how the breach occurred, but initial reports indicate officials believe the insurgents might have had help from Afghan security personnel.
Tuesday's attack follows an incident Monday in which three gunmen in Afghan police uniforms fired on American troops in another location in southern Afghanistan, killing one and wounding several others.
Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby said the past couple of days have been tough, but attacks tend to escalate at this time of year. "It's not uncommon that in the warm months of the year, violence will increase there in Afghanistan," Kirby said. "Part of that is because of the weather. Part of it is because ISAF and coalition forces are being more aggressive. They're out and about much more, particularly in the south, so there - they have occasion to be in more contact with or more of a problem for the enemy and, therefore, eliciting some of these attacks."
Uniformed Afghans - either insurgents in disguise or members of the country's police or military - have been behind numerous killings of U.S. and NATO troops this year. The incidents have fueled mutual distrust between Afghan and allied forces in the now-decade-old conflict.

Its been two years since this occurred, and now the FOB is closed and most of us that were there are now home or on other assignments. What happened that night will never be truly told to the public, for the most part, no one really cares anymore. With the events unfolding in Iraq now, we can see whats in store for Afghanistan.. complete failure of any organised government to uphold the rights and liberties of their people, and the extremists will roll through and retake all that we have spent blood and treasure to establish. We can never hope to impose freedoms on a people unwilling to fight for them.
I still have a piece of shrapnel from the mortars used in this attack. What a scary night. The CNN version of the story is so false it is almost humerous.

I believe this attack was part of the Inside Combat Rescue show! when they had to rescue the injured.
Nun of this story is true...far from what happened. They were not dressed as afgan police nor military and their were onlky 6 of them and where all killed. They snuck onto the fob not threw an ecp but another way. 6 us soldiers where wounded in action and 1 afgan national tundra guard of the fob was kia who saved the life of a sgt. and his boss who were heading into danger and he told thim to go the other way seconds before being shot to death. They ran around in the pitch black 4 of them throwing gernades and spraying their ak47s into buildings and bunkers in attempt to take out sleeping or hiding soldiers which they did not succeed, while the other 2 stayed in the back and did IDF shooting rockets at throwing gernades as well. They were takin out as soon as we got eyes on them and everyone is okay, Thank God! Hooah
You have some of your facts wrong. I am here on the same FOB andI know personally a few of the people who were shot, not all of the injured were shot but it was more than 6 injured. Now I dont know who you are but you need to remember OPSEC. The general population does not need to know every detail of how this stuff went down. I was their that nite I was their I was a roller fsr contractor with mantec/pd system. I give our us military their props it was a black out fob. the guys came out and fought in the middle of the nite 2:30 to be Exact and fought Until 7:30 the next morning. It seem un real but I was an eye witness to it all. Thank God no one really got heart or more peope killed.

I don't get it. We used to fight wars with objectives, we learned a huge lesson in Vietnam that cost tens of thousands of US servicemen's lives. You don't fight a war without a clear obtainable objective. I get it, this is where we were attacked from, but the enemy we came to destroy was Al Quaeda, we drove them from power and mostly out of the country in the early years of this war. Since then we've sat around until a homegrown insurgency could form... Our enemy lies directly across the border in Pakistan. Why are we sitting in Afghanistan when Al Quaeda, the group responsible for attacking us is not there... The people of Afghanistan eventually turned against us, because we're occupying their country... our fight wasn't with the people of Afghanistan it was with Al Quaeda... Seriously, we do not owe Afghanistan anything, we came in, destroyed the people we were after, we should have left... let the Afghanis figure out what kind of Government they want and how they want to run their lives, we don't owe them anything... we destroyed the people that attacked us, that should have been our ONLY objective.
